Waking up here is a daydream I re-live often. I would truly give it more if I could, but you can't rate Mother Natures beauty.
Stopped here for one night on a cross-country trip back home to the Bay Area, CA. I was 100% unaware of The Great Sand Dunes National Park until about two weeks before my drive. I consider myself well traveled so It was a very pleasant surprise!
It was me and my 1 y/o Husky girl, Kira, and We decided with COVID and having the time, why NOT take 8-10 days to get back and visit all the national parks we can along the way! (I ABSOLUTELY recommend getting the Nat'l Parks annual pass if going to more than one park or federal place).
But this camp ground was just as pleasant of a find as the dunes themselves. Keep in mind where you are, and if your expectations are realistic, and your goal is to have a beautiful, scenic, secluded, primitive, unique experience then you're golden. I was in a Honda Accord and was able to make it, but take it slow! Watch the weather, if you're not used to the west it can be hot during the day but quite the opposite at night.
In my case, I Wish I would have thought about the WIND! Being in this location, elevation, etc...regular stakes wouldn't cut it. (And the ground is rocky, This is a place you definitely want to use every tie-off connected to your tent).
But all in all, a very aff peaceful and beautiful experience! Waking up to a BEAUTIFUL sunrise over the Rockies, wildflowers and sunflowers everywhere, a cool crisp morning breeze, and many friendly people camping close by (but hidden/divided well), to have a chat and say good morning!
Wonderful location for the dunes and the falls, breathtaking views, and a place I'm very much looking forward to returning to! read more
