Shrimp in the Camarones Huapango.
Dan T.

El Huapango Mexican Restaurant (3600 SE Crossroads Dr Suite D, Grimes, IA 50111). The Camarones Huapango here is really an excellent dish. Four of my favorite things. Large shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, and cheese. The dish also comes with green and red peppers, rice, and "salad." Served with flour tortillas. We started using El Huapango for takeout shortly into our current season. This was the first time we'd dined in. Social distancing is meh. They seated us at a booth right next to another couple. Fortunately the corner booth we were seated at wasn't "fluffy" friendly so I asked if we could move to a table. The restaurant wasn't crowded. Only two couples and one larger party... Moving us to a table helped with distancing and was much more comfortable. Seems like this happens with a lot of corner booths. Restaurants appear to jam two benches and a table into the space they have left at the end of a row during construction... A Victoria Secret or Abercrombie & Fitch model I am not... The other booths looked normal sized. Our server wore a mask. A chimichanga lunch plate, cheese sauce, a soda, and my entree came to $30 and change before tip. Service was good, the food came out fast, and everything was in order. Lately the shrimp dishes I've been ordering at my local Clive go-tos have been kind of lack luster. Small and bland. These were nice sized, had a little char from the grill, and were seasoned perfectly. And bacon just makes everything better... Definitely raised the bar a step or two back up as far as what my expectations should be...

Mild is the bright red salsa and hot is the darker

Read through all the reviews, one said the place was too warm, it's been fixed. my dad had to go get his sweater. Another review talked about no chips and salsa, they brought us some as soon as we sat and refilled them too, i'd say that's fixed as well. Still another review mentioned slow service or lack of . . . We had our drinks, food and an attentive waitress through the meal. On the way to this place we passed a car and then it seemed we passed it again, was it a glitch in the matrix or a YouTuber? We will never know. The food was good, and the kitchen was quick. The service was quick at the start and through the main meal but once they new we were done we had to find our waitress to get the check. Still if that was the only glitch in the matrix . . . if you live near by or are passing through this place should blip your radar.

Hawaiian Pork Tacos with Rice and Beans

We were looking for Mexican and a friend suggested we try El Huapango. Her family loves it for the family meals (tacos, enchiladas, fajitas), but being only 2 with different preferences we ordered individually. The online pick up ordering works great! It is easy to place your order and pay, then you receive an email receipt and a text when it is ready. When arriving you call and your order is delivered to you in your car. We ordered the street tacos - Hawaiian pork (3 tacos, beans and rice with onion and cilantro and salsa on the side), guacamole with chips, and Alambre (one of their specialty meals - grilled chicken, steak, shrimp, chorizo, onion and tomato topped with grilled pineapple served with tortillas, rice and beans). Portions were generous and the food was all very tasty! We will definitely be back and will recommend this gem to friends! Service from the order to the pick up, price (around $30 with tip), food quality and quantity, all ranked highly!

The sides that came with my Chicken and Steak Fajitas.!

The food was delicious. My waitress was great. Overall I really enjoyed this place. I will be returning.

Mediocre food. Everything always seems so greasy and never meets expectations. The soup isn't terrible and the portion is very large.

The chips can be stale, and service a bit slow, but the food is really good. The drinks are also very delicious.

I feel bad not liking this place. In theory it should be great. The space is great with lots of…read morehightop tables, U-shaped bar and not one but two pool tables. Plus they have a ton of TVs so you can see the game from any seat. It's close to where I live so we checked it out again despite some subpar experiences. So for those reasons I will give it 4 stars. However, I always seem to leave irritated and wishing we hadn't stopped by. The bartenders get the job done but just the basics of getting what you want but not necessarily checking in. There were what I am assuming to be a handful of regulars, so that must suit them fine. Beer was cold to that was good but more than we are used to spending. We got the pretzel bites which came out cold with cheese in its original single serve plastic packaging. Which is fine, we ate it. We just thought it would be served warm. And since the bartender kind of disappeared we couldn't ask for it to be heated up.

Went here after arriving from out of town. After standing at the door for several minute, without…read moreany instructions we sat ourselves. The menu was about a fourth of what the website showed. Then, nob can to take our order. At the 10 minute mar, my husband went up to the bar where the bartender was continually vaping behind the bar. She then told us we had to order at the bar. Did not know that. Then, her friend came in with a dog that sat on the bar next to many people's drinks. Gross! Terrible experience. luckily the food was ok.

We came here to see a band we like (Sister Sarah)…read more This place is conveniently located just off the interstate and in a shopping center. We are told it used to be a bank, but we checked the vault and sadly no money was left there for us... There are multiple entrances to use - Front, back side... It looks like the locals use the front, and the band lovers use the other doors...just an observation. The bar is very large and double sided which makes it super accessible There is lots of seating and entertainment to be had. Darts, and Pool tables and televisions - they move the pool tables aside and cover them so the band can play and so there is more dance floor. They respectfully shut the music off and the TVs down while the band plays too - nice touch! We were able to walk up to the bar and get nicely priced drinks served very quickly despite how busy they were. All of the employees were very friendly and accomodating. Food looks like it is limited to the frozen pizza, but hey better than nothing. (There are multiple options just outside the front door if you want other food) The place is large and there is pent of room to accomodate a large crowd, and still room to dance! (Maybe next time) It is still obvious it used to be a bank, but it works for a bar. They should turn the Vault into a VIP room! We will keep an eye out for our favorite bands playing here. PRO TIP: Conveniently enough you can also get here using only back roads.

Yes, part of this place use to be a bank so the old vault is still there. We came out to see a live band and the acoustics were very good. We did bar service and that was good so no issues there. I am told they will be expanding to a food menu so at this time I cannot comment on table service or food. Looking forward to coming back to see how this place develops.
