Closest authentic Mexican we have seen in Iowa. The servers are very friendly and make sure you have everything you need. They are super fast. The drinks are nice and large and they make them there . My favorite is how they use tajin on the rims of the glass and I have only seen that in Texas. Yum! The salsa has flavor and a nice kick. Portion sizes are big as well. It has kind of a festive atmosphere and a small bar.

THE place for some good beer when you're in Des Moines, hands down. Their selection is unmatched. The Ultimate Stop for Bikes, Beer & Bites…read more After a day of biking, we made it back to El Bait Shop with some friends. This place is a solid choice, whether you're in the mood for the world's biggest selection of tap beers or some fantastic gastropub and comfort food from the lounge next door. We love it here because we can park our bikes in the provided area off the patio and still keep an eye on them. The outdoor service area is semi-shaded and the service is just as good as you'd get inside. As a beer lover, I can tell you the selection is ridiculous and expansive. If you want it, they probably have it, and from four or five different breweries at that! The menu is also loaded, with choices from both El Bait Shop and the High Life Lounge. Today, our food order was as impressive as the beer list. While I can't recall all the beers we had, the food included a Prime Rib Sandwich with tots ($14.99), the Pizza Burger also with tots ($11.99), the Philly Style Pot Roast Sandwich with a side of potato salad, and a massive bowl of Macaroni and Cheese ($11.99). We were starving after our ride, but that didn't change the fact that the food was all delicious, well-prepared, and served by our very attentive waiter, Kyle???, May. No one had any complaints, and the beer was cold and on time! Overall, we love the eclectic vibe of this place. Its downtown location gives you some great views, and more importantly, you're within walking distance of almost everything downtown Des Moines has to offer. This is a go-to spot for me, and I love taking first-time visitors here because it's so unique and the quality of both the service and the food is always on point. Oh, and did I mention the beer selection is completely insane? If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out, and you don't even know it. PRO TIP: Come here, and before you leave, slip over to the High Life Lounge for a throwback moment. Next time, start there and slip over here for a beer!

I arrived around 3:00 PM on June 20 and sat at a mostly empty bar. After receiving my drink, I asked for a menu. Instead of a simple explanation, the bartender rudely told me to "turn around" and pointed toward the food line. I apologized and explained that I had never been there before. The interaction only got worse from there. As I walked the short distance to the food line--with my suitcase still sitting at the bar because I was traveling--the bartender yelled across the room asking whether I wanted a tab. I immediately apologized again and explained that I wasn't from the area and wasn't familiar with how their process worked. When I handed him my card, his response was sarcastic and condescending. Another customer at the bar actually exchanged a look with me because the behavior was so unnecessary and awkward. The food itself was good. The tenders and Brussels sprouts were enjoyable, and the young man taking food orders was professional, friendly, and helpful. Unfortunately, the bartender continued to ignore me for the remainder of my visit. My drink sat empty for an extended period of time. He looked directly at my empty glass multiple times without acknowledging it while continuing to serve other customers. A female bartender eventually noticed and offered another drink. When it came time to leave for my flight, I politely asked for my check. The bartender responded with more sarcasm and attitude while trying to locate my tab. After another unnecessarily rude exchange, he finally found it and immediately turned the payment screen toward me, instructing me to add a tip. At that point, I told him directly that he had been rude to me throughout my entire visit. His response was essentially, "Yeah, sorry," in a tone that made it clear he wasn't sorry at all. I left a zero-dollar tip, which is something I NEVER do. And I made sure he knew. He looked and stomped away. The frustrating part is that this experience was completely avoidable. I was a first-time customer in an unfamiliar restaurant environment, asking normal questions and trying to be polite. Instead of receiving basic hospitality, I was treated like an inconvenience from the moment I sat down. The kitchen staff and the woman bartender were great. The male bartender working around 3 PM on June 20 was not. One employee shouldn't be enough to make a customer leave angry, but in this case, he absolutely was. I would not return, and I cannot recommend this establishment based on the service I received.
