This commissary is just like all the other commissaries I been to. They have a sushi bar, fresh deli meats, fruits, vegetables, bakery, Asian, Hispanic, European aisle. Like all commissaries, they are limited I space and a some brand variety but you can always find what you need at the commissary. read more

This is a pretty good commissary. They widened the aisles a few years ago, making it easier for people on scooters (and they are legion) to get around. Despite the renovations, the store still looks a little tired when compared to off-base grocery stores. People come here for good prices on name-brand groceries, a decent meat counter and an excellent selection of ethnic foods, especially during the holidays. This is where I go to stock up on Alstertor herring fillets, Düsseldorf mustard and Bahlsen Lebkuchen. There's no sales tax, but you do pay a commissary "surcharge" that pretty much amounts to the same thing. The commissary opens every morning at 8:00 AM, so go early to avoid the crowds. read more

Great prices on branded items for Health & Beauty items. Sale items are even better! But, did notice that Specials and hot deals at HEB can be irresistibly cheaper or great on deals when getting "buy and get item FREE". Some Fruits & Veggies are sometimes really at lowest quality. For example Strawberries, every purchase ive made has been disappointing with lots of black spots, deformation and mushed. But , their everyday vegetables are clean and handled with care. I prefer to buy strawberries at Costco for the quality. And my family is bigger and the bulk prices are much worth it in my opinion. International section is AWESOME! After travelling its a must have! So its wonderful to know when you have that crave. Its conveniently there. Meat prices are good too BUT like I mentioned "big family" so I feel that when purchasing for example thier wings. I noticed the quality of their wings does not compare to wings at costco. Commisary wing package are smaller in meat size. One person can eat 7 to 9 wings easily as Costco brand 3 to 5 pieces are huge and enough. Also, their Rotisserie chicken is small & expensive. The Rotisserie at Costco are huge and at $4.99. Commisary is great for can foods, some health & beauty, cleaning products, snacks & chocolates, and baking needs. Chicken Thighs was $3.13 at .87 cents a pound! I definitely go for thighs. We dont eat thighs often but I definitely go there for those! And bone in pork are cheap too. With meat I do check prices per pound it varies everywhere depending on the quality your looking for. Its conveniently close by and as another had mentioned they have a pharmacy! Lots of perks to commisary but you still need to bargain check if your on a budget! But for non-budgeting families by all means this may be great for you!!! You'll find all you need! read more

I went to the commissary every weekend with my parents growing up but I haven't been back in the past couple of years. When I went back this past weekend I was pleased to see that they have made some major improvements including widening some of their aisles and adding enclosed refrigerator units. The produce section still needs some work in terms of freshness but you can't beat the prices for groceries! I also like that they have moved the clearance items to the front of the store instead of having it in very back hallway. There are many people who want the stateside commissaries closed. That would be a disaster for older military retirees who left service before pensions became more generous, and young families. You do get great deals on virtually everything in the store. The produce isn't great, for sure, but you won't find better prices for dry items anywhere. The meat section, you have to closely observe the items. A lot of the meats are "select", which is the lowest quality. I've found no matter where I've been, commissaries will save you money. It's the only place where name brand items can more than compete with store-label items on a cost basis. And no, I would not want to see WalMart supercenters on base. read more

They have a huge selection and prices are great! My favorite thing is that I can get a specific brand of tea that I got when I lived in Naples, Italy. San Bennedetto Tea (peach, lemon, & green). The best tea I have every had in my life !!LOVE!! read more

If the first thing you think when I say commissary is the prison store, then you would be correct. I am going to speak of a different commissary. This is the grocery store on most military bases. A smaller than I expected commissary considering how large Lackland is and the number of people it serves. To me it is a typical commissary. A hit and miss with some of the items they carry when compared to other commissaries. This is to be expected as many of these stores cater to the region they are in and carrying various local products. My only gripe is what you will find in any commissary and that is the 5% surcharge. Depending on which state you live in you actually come out better shopping in town when that state has no tax on food and you utilize coupons. Still for those that work on base it is a very convenient stop and one of those benefits I hope is not getting cut in this age of budget cuts. read more

This facility is open 7 days a week. Can't say that about all commissaries. Only closed On Turkey Day and Christmas Day. The place is clean, the staff is very polite, and the selection is outstanding. I always come here for my meat purchases. Much better quality meats that at Wally or HEB. read more

Overall good compared to other commissaries. Meat market, however, is always out of something. For example: The pork sausage on a stick sells out on day of delivery but they don't increase the order. Seldom do they have corned beef and when they do have it it's way overpriced compared to area supermarkets. I haven't seen tenderized pork cutlets in the last three biweekly visits. Choice beef prices are competitive. There's not much savings on most things in the store compared to local supermarkets especially when you add the four percent surcharge (tax) on food items. I realize the four percent is not a tax but it works the same on my end. None of the local supermarkets charge four percent on top of food prices. And local supermarkets pay their carryout people. The produce department is not reliable... one visit finds shortages, next visit finds poor quality or overpricing. And the excuse is always something to do with the "contract" or "deliveries".
