Came on a recommendation for an Asian grocery. They have a vast variety of shelf, frozen, produce, and cookware items. Very reasonable prices for the groceries and goods. It is a very unassuming spot located right in the middle of a neighborhood. Did not know what to expect when I pulled up but I was pleasantly surprised. This supermarket is located in a residential area, a bit tricky to find. I can't speak for the price since I rarely buy Asian groceries in San Antonio. The selection was decent for someone like me who is in town for few nights and just need something for the microwave (I bought some Asian instant noodles) Overall, I would come by if I'm in the area. read more

Every time we walk into this store my son covers his nose. Yes it smells like an Asian market as if you walked into the middle of chinatown. I wish they would update the inside of this building. It is a bit run down. They do have a great selection of Asian goods. The prices are better than most Asian stores. They don't price things like 5xs more than u know u would get it if u went to China town. Coming from California. I HAVE to say this place is where to go and get your foodies and Asian cooking needs. Market day is Thursday Morning. Head out early as it will run out quickly. By Friday the stock is about half of what it was Thursday. I have been here a few times to stock up on certain items I can not buy at local stores. I just love how my son makes the same face every time we walk in. read more

Tried 3 Vietnamese grocery stores in SA in one day ....this one was the only one that had what we were looking for (and cashiers actually talked to their customers)....but dang, nothing but cardboard boxes everywhere? They don't bother taking them out of the boxes to stock on the shelves. Prices were written with sharpies. Dirty. Stinky. Messy. No distinct produce area. Meat area was non-existent. It's sad to even say this was a "market" or "grocery" store. Sad. Sad. Sad. Viet grocery stores in SA are a joke. I guess I can kiss goodbye to cooking Viet dishes. Several people suggested I check out this Asian grocery store because the prices are less than other Asian grocery stores in the area. I found that to be true. The cashier is also quite friendly and helpful. But I just can't get over how disorganized everything seems to be. Most things were still in boxes. The produce section was picked clean. What was left had mold. Not a pretty sight! The fridge/freezer sections were ok. The "seafood section" only had 3 tubs of shrimp packed in ice. So not exactly a plethora of offering as people have told me. But would I be back? Sure. Price is right for dry goods, spices, and sauces. read more

Expensive relative to the other vietnamese places. The place had an odor like moth balls. Items are left in cartons. It's not dirty per se, but it's not the cleanest either. The vegetables are kept in a fridge in the back so they were the only items i felt comfortable buying. I came here for chives as it was the only place that carried it that week. Great place to stock up on your Vietnamese cooking needs. I went today to pick up items for Pho. They have a packet that has all the spices needed for Pho. Its great so you don't have to buy mass amounts of the different spices needed for Pho. The lady on the register was So helpful when I couldn't find what I was looking for. Such a great place! I see a lot of people bashing this place for its aesthetics and its atmosphere, but if you ask me, it's one of the charms about it. You have to understand the history behind this establishment, established by a Vietnamese immigrant family nearly 20+ years ago, and its the oldest Asian grocer here. I've been going here for as long as I remember and it's practically become sort of like an Asian H-E-B to me. The selection is fresh and always is delivered Wednesday night, to be bagged and prepared for market days on Thursday. The meat selection and seafood selection is a modest variety, though I wish they would have more exotic seafood such as sea cucumber or eel. The vegetables come from all ends of Asia from Indian eggplant and Chinese broccoli, to Japanese Bok Choy and Vietnamese bean sprout. There's even a lot of tasty snacks my siblings and I enjoy here! They even have rice cookers and other Asian general merch. Overall, Hung Phong may seem like just a dainty market, but its just as amazing as it is a relic of the Vietnamese immigration and the culture it brought such a long time ago along. San Antonio is in desperate need of better Asian supermarkets. I finally had a chance to check this place out and although the reviews were bad, I thought they might have the products that I was looking for. My experience was terrible. They do not take the items out of the boxes. The meat does not look fresh and the food in the fridge looks so dirty that even though the produce looked fresh, I was scared to buy it because the store itself was just so dirty. The only plus was that they had a huge variety of rice but even that won't be bringing me back here. I rather be eating American food every day but luckily, I still have Tim's. read more

I'm no stranger to Asian markets having lived in SF and San Diego and frequenting them for produce and hard to find items. I will not be going back to this place. Stinky and disorganized accurately describes this market. I was in the area and seeking out ingredients to make some homemade kimchi. I could not find the chili powder that I was seeking and could not locate an employee to assist me. Walking past the meat cases was unpleasant. I don't consider myself to be particularly squeamish and am an adventurous eater but the bloody sacks of chopped up parts were a little much for me. This experience is specific today's visit. They prob have a new owner. My family usually shops here, I go less often so dont know when the change took place. The old owner is a really sweet and helpful lady. If you ask about an item you couldnt find. She will either tell you exactly where its at or go and show you personally. The new owner or whoever was managing during today's visit was the complete opposite. I was stocking my shopping cart until i couldnt find one specific item. As i approached the store employee, i wasnt sure if she's working there or not so i asked her in Vietnamese then when she mentioned she doesnt speak Vietnamese, I spoke to her in English. Instead of asking me what i need help with. She gave me attitude and kept speaking in a yelling tone about how she works there but doesnt speak Vietnamese. Seeing the reactions from her, I went to the front and asked the lady at front what i was looking for and told her how the store employee was treating me. She offered no apology, just directed me towards the general area of the items then told me whatever they have there is all they have. As i was walking out of the store, the first woman pushed carts right after me and hit my feet from behind, getting my shoes stuck in one of the carts. I stopped, put my shoes back on and turned to ask her what she thinks she was doing. She said with an attitude that she was pushing the carts. I went back into the store to tell the same lady at the register what just happened and she just said she didnt see it while offered no apology. Thats it! I will never shop there again nor let my family and friends shop there. I never expected much customer service at these establishments but decent civility is needed and this place today totally lacked it. There are at least 3 other asian markets within 5 miles of this store and they are all well stocked, bright and clean. Also the ppl who work there know how to treat the customers. read more

Yes, it's in a skeevy neighborhood on a street that hasn't seen any road work since it was paved several decades ago, so have a good dentist on call after your teeth get rattled. Yes, you're not sure that your car will be there when you come out (although it always is; owners must be Triad). Yes, the store itself looks like some leftover 60s hair salon on the outside. Yes, it's creepy with the bare bones decor, huge wooden bunk bed shelves for snacks. Yes, the shelves are stocked haphazardly at best. Yes, you have to check expiration dates, because the store can be lax about that (to put it kindly). I shop mostly at Tim's for my Asian needs, but they don't have the meat and fish selection that HP does. Hence why I'm over here, risking my life and getting my teeth knocked out, at least once a month. But if you know what you're looking for with Asian cuisine, you'll probably find it here. The secret to a good experience at Hung Phong is to get there EARLY in the morning, Friday and Saturday especially. Hint: They often open a lot earlier than the sign out front says they will. If you want to buy something 30 or so minutes before the official time, they'll open the door to make a buck. Going early in the morning, I'm there when the fish truck arrives fresh from the Gulf. The first thing that came off one day was a smallish box of live soft-shelled blue crabs. I haggled the price down low enough that I ended up taking the entire box of them for close to the price I'd pay at Central Market for 3 or 4. This is why you guys don't find things like this when you sleep in. People like me snap up the good deals when the store opens. I made my husband prep them. I cry at the thought of removing their eyes, poor things. But they're so tasty... I've also been at HP when they brought in a freshly-slaughtered goat. The hooves and hair were still on, and the butcher nonchalantly started skinning it right there for all to see. Now I grew up on a farm, so butchers at work don't bother me in the least; however, I know some of y'all out there are a bit more squeamish. So be warned that you might not want to go in the back if you can't stand to see an animal cut up for food. However, if you're wanting cabrito... The other reason to get there early is that Hung Phong quickly tucks away some of their meat and fish for restaurant usage if you're not there to grab what you want/need. I won't name names, but several chefs have told me they use this place for meat or fish emergencies, because HP tends to have what they're looking for. You've undoubtedly eaten meat or fish from here, like it or not. The selection of Asian housewares is...interesting. It isn't organized at all, it makes zero sense, it's on the shelves however they can get it in or on it. But you can find some interesting things if you have the time to poke around and dig through it all. read more

I have been going on and off to this store for years now and usually would expect the same treatment from the cashiers and often not a warm welcome one. Today was one of the worst day that I've ever experienced when it came to customer service and courtesy. For some time now, one cashier in particular who I believe is part owner of this place, not only is rude, but made an indirect comment towards me even after I told her "Thank you" during my visit. You only come here on every Thursday because the have new market and fresh veggies and meat coming on this day. If you miss Thursday, sometimes Friday and Saturday will be okay too. The inside looks okay, but the seafood stuff look dirty. Other service like cashier sometimes is mean and unwelcome. I go here to stock up on my Asian foods and pantry items. They have a alright selection of herbs, snacks, meats, and Asian sauces. Compared to other Asian markets I've been to, this one is probably not the biggest, but it is slightly better in terms of cleanliness. It's a small little shop, but they have most of the stuff you wouldn't find anywhere else. I really like the exotic fruits, but every time I go, the fruits aren't really fresh... like it's in the refrigerator and looks like it's been there for a while. They can do better with organization and customer service. The lady that's in charge with front counter can be rude sometimes. She came at me when I asked her about an item on my receipt and was never given a, "Thank you". Like you need customers, if you're going to act like that, who's going to come again? We customers have money, we can go anywhere we want, so please be respectful to customers. They do have a young man (probably a high schooler) working the register, he is great and attentive to customer needs. The older men in the back room are great too, very helpful and attentive to customer needs. For that, they get 3 stars from me. Probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

I called asking if they carried live dungeness crab. The man said yes. Could it be? Live dungeness crab in San Antonio! I arrived only to be disappointed. The crab they have is blue crab not dungeness crab. The "fresh" seafood are kept in boxes and coolers on the floor towards the back of the store. Overall, this store was not my favorite. It saddens me that San Antonio is lacking when it comes to Asian markets. They do have some produce, frozen products, and a decent variety of Asian food products. Maybe I've come to expect very little from Asian markets, but the disorganization of this store did not bother me much. Rather, I'd describe the store as an organized disorganization. Things are generally placed in their respective categories, but despite this, the store gives the impression of being disorganized. Despite this, I was able to peruse the isles and find all the ingredients that I needed. They also had some of the 'rarer' produce that one would not be able to find a your local supermarkets. As another yelper had previously mentioned, to optimize for freshness and quality, their produce and meat are delivered on Thursday. Definitely covers a niche market, mostly Thai and Vietnamese foods, as far as I can tell. The prices are fair. I know what they stock so I go mostly for the coconut milk, canned exotic fruits, curries, spices, soap, lemongrass, teas, and tom yum soup concentrate. Sometimes they have galangal. There is seafood, produce, dishware, utensils, snacks, drinks, sauces, noodles, and more. I sometimes take a cooler there to put cold foods in, then drive to the relatively near Korean store to complete my shopping. read more

OK, I've been going here a couple of times a month for a couple of decades, So I'm pretty happy. Yes, it's a seedy part of town, and the store fits in. Yes it smells different ... it's not a squeaky clean HEB Plus. I don't by meat here, and usually shop on Saturday, so the produce is slim pickings. But there's an eclectic frozen foods section (lumpia anyone?) A lot of great spices and seasonings you can't get most places - and at a fraction of the price. Fish sauce - many brands and varieties in large quantities, not those little 8 oz bottles you can find at HEB. Sesame oil by the quart, again at a fraction of the cost. Rows of soy sauce, broths, soups, pickled and canned veggies, and rows of noodles, from ramen-style to rice to rice sheets. Rice of course. They do sell a variety of cookers, dishes chopsticks and cutlery here. I've gotten a couple of great cleavers there, one for chopping, and one more for an Asian chef style, a sweet vegetable knife (price those at bed bath and beyond!). Again, prices are great. It's a bit like walking into another country, OK, but so is going to the meat markets in Poth or Zarzamora, or a bakery in Schulenberg or Castroville. The closer you get to the real deal, the less it smells like HEB. read more

So I just moved to the San Antonio area and have been searching high and low to find that authentic taste in asian food. Unfortunately I have yet to find it, so having amazing friends up north to help me with my cooking adventures, I received some great recipes. The only thing is finding "That" asian market that carries the necessities like curry paste, hoisin sauce, fish sauce, and the brands that I would use too. I did a google search and found this really great hole in the wall shop that had everything I need to host a Goi Coun night!!! They also carriend Mi go Reng!!!! Win win!!! We went there and the owners Im guessing were very pleasant, carried a comversation with us and made us feel very welcome. Overall great place to shop. read more

There is no need to fight the traffic and insane crowds and the market had everything that I was looking for in SA for the last 8 years.
