Have you been to Righteous Room? This is pretty much the same bar, with the same owners, and basically the same set up in a slightly different location. If you haven't already, you should read my review of the Righteous Room, I think I'll just copy/paste the rest of the info for this review and totally mail it in. Seriously though, they make some pretty solid dirty martinis and have an unusual assortment on tap including Kentucky Bourbon Barrel, which people who are not me tend to dig. At times the shotgun setup can get a little cramped and there's no place to sit. The communal sink outside the restrooms is the best place in the city to meet someone and also forces everyone to wash their hands (huge plus). read more

During my most recent trip to Cincinnati, my friends and I came here while we waited for our table at The Eagle ( I was told this bar is the waiting grounds for that restaurant). This is the second time I have been here and I have to say that I was slightly disappointed. The canned/bottle beer list was not up to date and when I went to order a Mad Tree beer I was automatically cut off with "we are out" even though I hadn't stated which type I wanted while I stared at 3 different cans in front of me. My friends and I sat at the bar and when we didn't have drinks it was as if the bartenders didn't care at all. They actually seemed rather annoyed that we kept ordering...hmm...I mean one would think you would want the business and the higher tip. read more

If I could give this bar zero stars I would. The bartender we had was an absolute prick with no personality. I wish I knew his name, or I'd call him out by name (he had sandy blonde hair). No words were exchanged from the start of the visit to when we closed the bill. I could excuse this behavior if the bar were packed, but there were only 3 people in the place. This is Cincinnati, not New York City, so his pretentious attitude doesn't play out very well here. There are far better bars in the area which we will happily attend. I love the strip of bars on Historic Main St. don't get me wrong, but The Lackman has moved up to my new favorite. It's a little more upscale so when I get off work I can go for a drink in my neighborhood rather than CBD and not feel out of place. Love the ambiance. Dim lit, cute bar tables, and an even cuter little patio. You know me, I have to have a patio. They always have really cool keg tappings and craft beer that you won't find anywhere else. The bartenders there not only know what they are talking about, but they want to be there! That is what I find so refreshing about this place, and ultimately why I love it. Whenever I go no matter who the bartender is, they are friendly and excited about whatever new is in. In fact, I would pick this bar as number one in customer service and that is what keeps people coming back. Overall great, great, bar to venture into on your journey around OTR. read more

The Lackman is a truly unique common ground for hipsters and downtown nine-to-fivers to congregate for a few frosty barley pops at the end of the day. I was very surprise wondering in here to see a fairly diverse group of people that I would not typically expect to be bumping elbows in the same bar. The beer selection is fantastic...I had an Imperial Stout that they had on tap, which sent me to the state of buzzed in no time flat; delicious! It has a similar feel to that of The Righteous Room, but is in (in my opinion) a much cooler part of town. This slowly regentrifying portion of OTR has much to offer in the range of food and quirky and trendy drinking establishments. Definitely worth stopping in for a beer or two before or after dinner at Lavomatic or perhaps the Senate. Check it out! read more

I finally had a chance to make it to the Lackman. As a craft beer aficionado, I had heard about their excellent beer selection, and I was not disappointed. I had an exceptional Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout that I'd never even heard of before, much less seen on tap. The interior is gorgeously restored with a beautiful bar, modern-looking while retaining a sort of classic "corner bar" feeling. As I told my friends, it's the kind of place where I'd like to sit at the bar, sip a beer, and watch big fat snowflakes fall down outside. The only downside, as others have mentioned, is the layout. It's small and narrow, without a lot of clearance between the bar on the left and the tables/stools that line the right wall. It was pretty crowded (5:30 pm on a Friday, not surprising) and there was a significant logjam right by the door. I had to get pretty friendly with some folks in order to make my way to the door to leave. Oh, and the happy hour prices were fantastic. $14 for two Stone beers, a fancy Goose Island beer, and a Moerlein OTR. Very nice. I'll be back. read more

The only thing Lackman's lacks is space. It's a very narrow bar, but they do make good use of the space they have - some high top tables, with a long built in bench and a long bar with a good amount of seating... but I have been here a few times when it's packed and there's just simply not enough space. The bathrooms are kind of... interesting. One for ladies, one for men, and a shared sink outside the bathroom area... which now makes me think... ew that door handle on the inside of the bathroom must be super germ filled. On to the good stuff... the beer... the pretzels... and the bartenders. So many delicious beers to choose from, amaaaazing crunchy pretzels to snack on that are coated in something that must be similar to crack because they're addictive. The bartenders seem to know how to manage the crowds and can make conversation when they're slow. Lackman's is a great place to swing by for a brew or two if you're having an adventure day in OTR! read more

The new kid on the block is OK, but not great. The beer selection is very good, but it seems that you might be paying the the trendy, new place status; better to go during happy hour when the pricing is more in line with other places in the area. The space is definitely on the small side, but lacks any "cozy" feeling and due to the hallway proportions and the brick walls becomes very noisy as the place fills up. The Vine Street location is great and I think the owners did the best they could with the space available, it is just not my favorite place, I urge you to experience it for yourself. Like beers, different people prefer different flavors and the Lackman Bar just may be your pint of brew. read more

I know most people don't think of Over-The-Rhine as a place to spend their weekends, but I highly suggest this bar in the Gateway Quarter, especially if you're a fan of craft beers. There is always a pretty good rotation that even a non-beer lover gal like myself can appreciate! My only complaint is that the size of the bar can lead to quite the crowds. It can be tough to just get to the bar on the weekends and if you get there late and are looking for a place to sit for awhile, chances are you're out of luck! read more

It's a stopover while waiting for a table at any one of OTR's excellent restaurants. Let's get through the basics, Lackman Bar is full of: 1. Beers you have never heard of served with a slice of attitude when you ask for something lighter and not so hoppy. 2. Very, Very few tables and chairs so it's going to get painfully crowded, very quickly. 3. Urban Hipster elite who are sure to condescend when you tell them you live outside of downtown. Scene being defined as a place where people go because it's cool and being seen there is even cooler. Enter Lackman. It's a room, a small room albiet, filled with good-looking twenty to thirty-somethings who are socializing with friends without a Bengal jersey in sight, AMEN! Lackman has a neighborhood feel without being a dive and a trendy atmosphere without being stuck-up. For me this is just right. Menu Variety: I've ordered drinks here, but the variety of options is very beer-centric, so if you're not a fan of beer, then you're likely out of luck. There is a drink menu, however, it hasn't changed in centuries, and the options are nothing to write home about. Prices/Value: I think outside the tiny happy hour, the drinks here are highly overpriced. Ambiance/Service: The service used to be decent here, but recently all I've noticed is impatient bartenders and immense crowds. The Lackman is a really great place to go if you want to enjoy a good quality craft beer in a semi classy setting. My boyfriend and I like to go here in the early evening. They have a great beer selection is really great and they also have a selection of whiskey and wine. The set up is really nice and the seating is very comfortable. The place definitely gets crowded at night. One thing that I will say that I did not like about this place was a certain bartender that I will keep anonymous. This bartender was over the top opinionated and made my boyfriend and I feel almost like idiots for liking certain beers that were not up to his standards. Tonight I ventured to OTR to visit Lackman bar for a Dogfish Head event (what can I say, beer events take me out of my comfort zone). After being very glad that I found a close parking spot on a well lit street, I walked in ready to enjoy an Aprihop beer run through apricots and fresh hops. A well worth trip :) It's a really cool little spot, great beer selection and the crowd is relaxed and comfortable. It's a small bar, which means when it gets crowded, it gets really crowded. And I hate to sounds like a stick in the mud here, but the music was super loud and techno-y for a Tuesday night and I had a lot of trouble hearing my friends. All in all, a great place to meet up and enjoy a craft beer. read more

I really wanted to give 3.5 stars, which Yelp can't do...but rounded up because they are in OTR and that means bonus points. I liked the Lackman. I think the decor is great, it feels upscale but the prices (at least during Happy Hour, which is the only time I've ever been) are good. I had wine, which is pretty easy--so I can't speak for the cocktails and I'm not a beer person so I can't speak to that. We had an impromptu birthday party there, and there wasn't much room (there is just a long bar/barstools, then a few small bistro tables). But, it was nice to sit in the window and people--watch. I haven't been there late so I also can't speak to the noise factor -- I don't usually go to bars late because I can't stand not being able to talk. When I walked into Lackman, I thought to myself, "I feel like I'm in a reverse Righteous Room." Now that I know the two bars share owners, it makes so much more sense. The Lackman is small, cozy, tastefully appointed and has great happy hour prices. The husband enjoyed the selection of beers, and I was nicely surprised by the free zesty pretzel sticks! It's true, the Lackman is tiny, but as they say, size isn't everything, is it? It wouldn't be the bar that it is if it was much bigger. The only complaint I had was the music might have been a tad too loud so I felt like I had to shout sometimes. Whenever I'm in OTR (which is very often) I usually stop by Lackman Bar. Their beer selection is unique and always changing, which I appreciate. It does sometimes stink to love a beer to only come back and it's gone, but then I am forced to fall in love with yet another beer. Oh darn (insert sarcasm here). I will point out that their bathrooms are slightly weird in that the sink is out in the hallway, meaning that you share it and are out in the open. This isn't a big deal but was surprising to me the first time I visited. However, it does allow one to see who is REALLY washing their hands and who is just a disgusting germball. If you can't guess, I'm a slight germaphobe! As previous reviewers have mentioned, the size of Lackman can pose a problem when it is crowded but I think it is worth the cramped space. In the end, it is a wonderful addition to OTR and I hope that people will come support the revitalization of this area! read more

Upscale pub that still rings true as a beer lover's haven. It's long and narrow, with limited seating and cozy, but energized atmosphere. They have a selection of beer that any aficionado could be happy choosing from. The liquor selection as well provides many quality choices in the whiskey realm. With frosted glass bathroom doors and external, communal sink in full view of the bar, they are clearly trying to do something whimsical. I am not entirely sure it it works, but it's certainly a conversation piece. For fun, ask the woman washing up across from you to check your teeth for food. Who knows, maybe she'll find it a clever way to attract her attention, assuming there isn't actually anything gross in there. ;) A bit loud, it's true, and moody in the way that a brooding artist might be, so generally speaking, attractive. Both combine to provide a setting that requires close association with your evening's companions. This means it may be better for having an intimate moment with that certain someone in your party, rather than a group conversation. I'd start out here for happy hour, to take advantage of their special prices and availability of seating. read more

Came here for a quick drink on a Saturday night while waiting on a table at another restaurant. There were four of us and we were able to get a couple seats quickly at the bar. Drink prices are very reasonable and Tito's is their well vodka. Bartenders were somewhat attentive, but could have been better. Best Feature: Beer selection - hands down. AMAZING! Worst Feature: None yet! I've only been here once, but once was enough to get a great impression of this place. We had attended a Yelp event nearby and met up with a friend recently moved to OTR. She recommended The Lackman and invited us to grab a beer post-Yelp event, so we did. I walked in and fell in love with the charm. Dark wood, intimate atmosphere, awesome seating. We were able to sit four of us easily during busier evening hours (although not sure what the busiest time is for them) and went up to grab a beer. They had a fabulous selection. They also offered us pretzels which were amazingly delicious, but the beer is what made it. I had a white russian - well made and delicious. My boyfriend, who hates stouts normally, had a creme brulee stout by Southern Tier. That one won, hands down. One of the best beers I've ever had and my boyfriend even loved it, despite his aversion to stouts! They had a lot to offer, the service was friendly + great, and we enjoyed our time immensely. I will definitely go back and hope that my second trip is as favourable as my first. If you're downtown, you HAVE to try it. It's a great place! read more

Lackman is a fun spot in Over the Rhine. I came by to meet a friend for drinks and was excited about the cocktails when I saw the atmosphere. I promptely ordered the Whiskers on Kittens based solely on the name. I was happy to see that they lit this drink on fire prior to serving! They also have an extensive beer and wine listing. It was really crowded on the Friday night that we stopped in, but we were pleased to be able to get a table pretty quickly. I can imagine not having a great time if we were not able to get the table, but we did so I can't complain. Nice, upscale spot for drinks in OTR. read more

I really wish this place would buyout the building next door and expand.... or just somehow make a better flow, but... thats really the only problem I have with it... and that's only if it's crowded. So thats a good thing right? This place is laid back while still having that nicer just sort of too classy feel. Where as thankfully I was wearing a dressier top with my jeans, or I might have felt totally out of place. The drinks were decently priced, and definately didn't skimp on the alcohol. Major major plus! The decor was nice, and there were tables set up for smaller groups, but if you're coming with a posse, not gonna be the greatest time. Lackman is still a bit new but it's been establishing itself as a really nice bar in Cincinnati. A bit removed from downtown proper it's small enough to be cozy but large enough to accommodate a good sized crowd. Though if the crowd gets too large it can be kind of hard to move around or talk. The bar staff does a great job of making sure everyone coming up to the bar gets served quickly, regardless of crowd size. The beer selection is excellent. There are maybe 8 to 12 taps, but they always rotate great beers through them. Usually Bell's, Stone, and Moerlein are up there along with some others. The only downside to Lackman is that it can get a bit pricier than you might expect. The beers they serve are worth it though. Just be too surprised when your bill is closer to what you'd pay if you were on fountain square. This place is hopping on the weekends but it can be a nice relaxing environment through the week. read more

Squarely situated in the redeveloping zone in Gateway Quarter, the Lackman is the first establishment to open that is just a bar. Of course, saying that the place is "just a bar" does a disservice to the outstanding beer selection available on tap. The bottle selection is good as well--limited only by cooler space in a bar that is the smallest of the new places to open on Vine. Expect a lively crowd on weekends and later on most nights. The service is good--waits for rounds are short by downtown standards. For those leery of Over-The-Rhine, there is ample parking within a block--either the flat lot at 12th and Vine or the Gateway Garage ($2 for nights and weekends) work well. If you go on a weekend night or when Ensemble Theater has a show on, don't expect to find street parking. read more

One of the latest additions to the Gateway Quarter section of Over-The-Rhine is the Lackman Bar, and it is a great addition. It is a corner bar with a slightly upscale feel, but not too snooty. If you have been to Righteous Room, it is similar (both have the same owners) but doesn't have an outdoor patio like Righteous. The seating is comfortable and the atmosphere is enjoyable. The best selling point for Lackman is their tap beer selection. There are multiple craft beers available and every time I have gone they have rotated some of the craft beers. Only things keeping me from giving it a 5 is I do wish the bar will a little bigger as it tends to get crammed during peak hours and its not a place you would want to go if you are keeping to a budget. Overall I am a big fan of The Lackman and visit whenever I am by the Gateway Quarter. It's a perfect place to go before and after a concert at nearby Music Hall. read more

I went here on Opening night as its opening night happened to be at the same time as the excellent MPMF music festival. First off the building this is hosted in is a fantastic gem. Its the kind of architecture one would only find in cities like New York, Boston, or Chicago. The interior was very nicely done and laid out with a classy classical look. One gets the feeling that this place was made from the very beginning to be a bar. At one point in time this was one of over 300 bars that lined vine street from the Ohio river to the hills that now house the University of Cincinnati. During OTR's heyday it was a microbrew pub of sorts, run by the Lackmans, and its fantastic to see a bar pay tribute to Cincinnati's rich but neglected brewing history. More of this sort of thing will put "Over-The-Rhine" over-the-top in terms of heritage tourism and buzz. There was a good beer selection, but the prices are a bit on the steep side by Cincinnati standards. On the other hand its a good sign that this place is carying more expensive alcohol and attracting a more affluent clientele to the neighborhood which will have the clout to clean help clean it up. As for the crowd, I felt out of place. If I was a mid 30s and up yuppie type it would be alright, but being in my mid 20s I felt too young for the bar. If I was in its demographic I may have given it a higher rating. Perhaps also because it was opening night and had a bit of buzz in a certain crowd, this place didn't quite settle on its final clientele and may deserve another look by me the next time I venture down to Cincinnati. The corner of 12th and Vine was once one of the most dangerous corners in Cincinnati's most dangerous neighborhood. This bar and the other shops, condos and apartments that now line the "Gateway Quarter" is a testament to 3CDCs success in revitalizing the area. Now if only I felt like I belonged at this place a little more when I tried it out. read more
