2016 YELP 100 CHALLENGE - 023/100 Traveled internationally by myself for the first time recently. Right before my trip, I was FREAKING out because I wasn't sure where to get Korean won for my trip. At first I called up my bank, Wells Fargo, but they said they'd have to special order it and it could take up to a week to receive. I was desperate, as I was leaving for my trip in less than a week, but luckily I found LAcurrency on Yelp! They have a conversion table on their website, so you can check out the rate you'd be getting if you go. I called the day before I wanted to come in and placed an order for $300 USD in Korean won, and $20 in Chinese RMB for my layover in Shanghai. I was impressed they have SO many different currencies readily available! Wells Fargo seemed to only have Euros and Mexican pesos, and even then that was only at select locations. So glad LAcurrency had what I needed on hand! I came in first thing when they opened in the morning at 9am the day after I placed my order over the phone. It's located in a small plaza in Van Nuys, and there was a lot of construction going on when I went which was kinda annoying, but oh well. The place is pretty bare. Just a few windows with bulletproof glass. There was only one guy working when I went, which made things a little slow because when I came in he was still booting up the computer/setting things up, but he was apologetic and was still very friendly and helpful, so that was good. My order had already been prepared and set aside, so he didn't have to go pull everything together, which was good. He counted all of my money in front of me, which was great. Also, don't forget to check in on Yelp because you basically get $3 USD for free! Overall, I am super happy I went to LAcurrency before my trip because it just made things so much easier since I had the money with me and didn't have to worry about exchanging at the airport, or when I arrived in Seoul at some random place where they may or may not speak English. Also, they have really good exchange rates and I think it would have been way worse if I exchanged at an airport or some place with really high rates. My go to place when I need to exchange some money! First off, I'm not going to sugarcoat the location for you. It's pretty shady. You usually don't want to be showing off the stack of cash you want to exchange and especially not for this place. On average, I get approached by 1.5 people asking for money within the 1 minute walk from my car to LAcurrency. But the rates here are the best, they promise to beat any cheaper rates. Plus, the staff here are great; they're very patient and attentive and will answer any of your needs in a very nice manner. PLUS, check into yelp for $3 off your transaction. This can definitely lower your exchange rate depending on how much cash you exchange. You can park in the lot or do street parking. If you're around van nuys and need to exchange money, I highly recommend this place! read more

I yelped "Currency Exchange" on Yelp because exchanging currency at my bank would require me to come back 2 business days AFTER my order [common story for most people]. It also yielded a higher exchange rate than many of the agencies because my bank did not specialize in currency exchange so I researched 4 other currency exchange places until I stumbled upon LA Currency. Pros: -The LOWEST exchange rates I have found in all of Southern California. I exchanged U.S. Dollars for Euros which was $1.13 for €1 as of 10-31-2015 [other agencies were charging $1.19 with $5-$10 transaction fee, or $1.22 with no transaction fee] so it was $39 [LA Currency] vs $81 [competitor] vs $121.50 [competitor] that I paid out of pocket to exchange $1350 for €uros which got me €1190 [would have gotten less anywhere else due to the transaction fees and higher exchange rates]. -They have $0 hidden fees so the exchange rate they give you is the exchange rate you pay out the door. -Check in on Yelp to get $3 off when you exchange anything $100+. This deal was SPECTACULAR as it drastically lowers what you pay out of pocket. -They open Monday - Saturday. -Ninnella was SHARPLY accurate with counting the money and explaining to me the procedures. I averaged an A- in math during high school / college so she probably averaged an A lol. Tips: -Understand if you need to change a small amount or large amount because most institutions charge a higher transaction fee for larger exchanges. -If you exchange more than $500, go LA Currency because they have the lowest rate with $0 hidden fees [see my math above]. -If you exchange more than $1000 you need to provide them an SS#, required by law pursuant FIN-2014-F003. Conclusion: They have the LOWEST rates so if you could drive to Hollywood or Van Nuys then do it. Sometimes it's worth the drive because again it was $39 [LA Currency] vs $81 [competitor] vs $121.50 [competitor] that I would have paid to exchange at a closer location to me. read more

I haven't been here since 2020, as I didn't travel overseas at all since then, so I had no need to exchange money since then, but now it's time to head out again, and it's always nice to come back here, as this is my go to place for all currencies, as I've exchanged for Euros here, and French Polynesia Francs. Very professional folks run this operations, always making it simple for the customer, and I love the website with real time exchange rates, but you can still call in to see the most up to date rates, in case there is by chance a delay on the website. I love the $3.00 refund if you check in with the app, and great to see you all again. They've always had my needed currencies in stock in all denomiations, but it's best to call to see if your currency is in stock, and rates applied are always when transaction is being made, not the rates of when seen earlier online. They don't tend to fluctuate that much within minutes, anyway, if at all, but sometimes you're surprised and you get an even better rate at point of transaction. I never go to any banks or credit unions to exchange, as this place truly has the best rates, and it's great that they have other locations around the city as well, but I've always gone to this locations, which is closer to me and really easy. Being a native NYer, I'm not gonna lie, I can be a bit thrifty, so I shopped around for a place to get my money exchanged at the best rates for an upcoming trip. I have previously done by exchange at a place downtown, but I just didn't have the time to make the trek during the workday again. So based on the reviews here, I checked LACurrency out. In the plaza that 711 is in, there's a sign outside that says "CHECKS CASHED". If you see this, you're at the right place. The process was very quick & simple. The teller will ask how much money you would like to exchange, will type into her computer and out comes your conversion rate on a TV so you can see. I also checked in for the free $3.00 which I included to exchange my USD to EUR. This place is 100x's better than going to a local bank where they may or may not have the cash on hand without calling first. If you're wanting to exchange, I recommend messaging or calling the shop & they can confirm if they have the amount you need. I will return to this location or the Hollywood one. read more

LAcurrency looks the same as dozens of other check cashing stores in the Valley but its foreign exchange rates were better than anywhere else I could find, including my bank, the AAA, and other exchange shops. I bought enough Euros to pay for a vacation rental and sold some spare yen I had from last summer. No need to order ahead. They only take cash, which sounds a bit sketch, but it was above board and the guy that runs the counter was very helpful and knowledgeable. He even offered some hints on spotting fake bills, which they obviously check for. The rates in the shop are updated hourly and are what it says on their web page; no extra fees. I came here once to exchange USD to Hong Kong dollars and another time to exchange Korean Won to USD. Both times I felt the exchange rates were reasonable and better than other places. For exchanging USD to foreign money, this place is the best hands down. But for exchanging foreign money back to USD, I recommend checking the foreign country's bank first before leaving your travel. I checked a Korean bank's rates and decided to do it here instead, but the Korean bank's rates were actually better (in Korea). read more
