    @ Harrod's Ladurée
    Ed C.

Simply the "GOLD STANDARD". I ordered two large raspberry macarons to go. I was not hungry at the time. Later they were as mesmerizing as always. I love their desserts. Super attentive staff. If you see a Ladurée run as fast as you can, order and prepare yourself for sensory overload.

This little venture inside Harrods is a cute teahouse party. Every girly girl loves it. There are lines and lines of varies tastes of macaroons. I ended up picking pistachio, strawberry, lemon, choco mix and vanilla. My favorite was definitely the pistachio favor. The layer outside is soft with a crunch. The macaroons melt in your mouth when you bit into them. They were 20.80 for a box of 18 or 1.70 each.

The desserts here are small and really cute. However they are kind of pricey. I got the grand cru chocolate dessert. It was really good and just the right size. Additionally, it came in a small little glass cylinder that you can keep.

You step into what looks like a magical cake shop. I had no idea what to expect but the display cases behind the till (that's register for us Americans) was really quite impressive, stacked highly with cakes and whatnot. There is some limited seating that does seem to have full waiter service. My colleague and I ordered some food at the till and then sat down to eat. The fruit tart had fresh raspberries on top. The custard was made with passion fruit. I liked it, although I would have preferred that the custard not have the passion fruit. It made the overall dish very tangy. Also don't try eating it with the plastic spoon. Mine broke. The macaroons seem to be a hit or miss. I tried the chocolate one and it wasn't bad, but maybe just not my cup of tea. As in, if you give it to me, I will eat it but the flavors were not super wow-ing. The raspberry one was decent as well. My colleague tried the sesame and the chocolate banana ones and was not pleased at all. Also there is no WIFI signal here.

The macaroons here were very good, another place where I heard some hype before trying. They do a great job with their products and have a lot to try. I had a few flavors and was satisfied with my selection. I would recommend trying a few flavors when you order, it's always nice to get a good taste of what they offer.

So the employees here are kind of stiff... and grim. I don't think I saw a single smile from any of them, which I can almost understand since they have to deal with shrill Harrods customers. The prices are also pretty ridiculous. But whatever! I don't care! I'll indulge myself! The place is bright, cheery, and colorful like an elegant boutique-y bakery for a grown up girly girl. I was a total schmuck and bought myself an 11 pound box of 8 smallish macarons. At first I regret it. And then I thought, 'F it. What the hell, it's not like I'm buying myself diamonds.' I got to pick 8 different flavors and I cherished each one instead of gobbling them up like I would normally. My favorites were the rose (so interesting!), pistachio (I don't even like nuts), and the red fruits. They were divine! I only wish I had bought more souvenirs when I was there.. Like a bag and chocolates and a candle. Waaa now I'm having real regrets!

Known to many as the macaron mecca, Ladurée was one of those things on my Paris list that remained incomplete due to time restraints. I was happy to find out that they have a shop within Harrods. After much deliberation, I ordered two macarons to go (rose & pistachio). At £1.75 the solo macarons seem to be the best deal. I thought I knew what to expect when I bit into the first macaron...but my boy did it seem like my tastebuds kicked into overdrive. Even though allergies have had me congested/sneezing all day-each of the filling's had mega bursts of flavor which were easily distinguishable and intense (in a non-artificial way) and the meringue parts were perfect texture-wise (sugary, crisp, & light). Holy macarons! Absolute bliss! Another mouthgasm later-I am kicking myself for not getting with the program earlier. I'm tempted to go get more but they probably wouldn't make it beyond my flight home :/ According to the sales rep, they can last up to 3 days and need to be refrigerated. At least there is a shop in New York ;)

Dessert plate of our high tea

Located on the bottom floor of Harrod's, we stopped in for high tea and there was about a 15 minute wait. Service from beginning to end was really great! We both got the high tea and it came with sandwiches, croissants (they ran out of the small flavored ones so instead of trying 4 kinds we tried 2 kinds but they were full size), desserts and of course tea. Hubby also got a cocktail. The sandwiches were great and my favorite one was the salmon (there was also cheese and ham). The almond croissant was to die for! It was coated in a sugar glaze with a hazelnut filling. We were so full that we only tried the macarons from the dessert tier while we we were there, and took the rest of the cakes with us. Those cakes were amazing even after sitting out for a day and they were so pretty I didn't even want to eat them at first. I've only done high tea once in the US and it came with a lot more small bites - both savory and sweet. Here, the focus was clearly on the beautiful desserts. If you can't stay for high tea I'd recommend coming in for a pastry and coffee (or tea). Also the room is beautifully decorated by chandeliers and a display of macarons in just about every color and flavor.

    Afternoon tea at Laduree Harrods

I LOVE Laduree- we had two afternoon teas between three of us (as recommended by the waiter), there were loads of cakes for us and we ordered an extra drink. They were all delicious and totally decadent- great for a celebration, they do have other things apart from macarons! You can eat outside or in their cute dining room. The waiters are all polite and knowledgeable- I'd recommend Laduree Harrods to any cake lover.

The rumour that Ladurée is in town spread itself fast. Those macaroons, which look so posh in every colour possible, sweeten up your life. Have you known Ladurée produces new flavours each season? One of the oddest was lavender... At the back entrance of Harrods you can directly enter the restaurant. I remember standing around waiting to be placed. It is a mission to get a table and after an exhausting day of shopping this is probably the last thing you need. We got seated in Ladurée dark decorated room on the ground floor and it got a bit stuffed. The stress continued when we found ourselves seated very close to the table next to us. Harrods is one of the touristiest traps in London and conquered by rich Arabs Knightsbridge locals. They spend their days shopping one luxury after the other. Of course Mohamed Al Fayed chose well to place a little bit of Paris as an added diamond at the back of his Harrods. If the macaroons are for you the match in heaven, go to 21 rue Bonaparte in St. Germain in Paris and things suddenly make more sense!

The Ladurée tea room is hidden in the back of the food hall at Harrods. They are constantly renovating the store, so it seems that some days it easier to find than others. When I was here last summer it there was a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop right next to it - which thankfully is no long there! So tacky! If you're just stopping by to pick something up, you can line up at the counter and one of the associates will help you. If you want to dine in, there's usually a wait of anywhere from 10-45 minutes. It's nicer if you're in the rooms the side, or upstairs since the main floor is always bustling with customers coming in and out and it's not as relaxing. It's always very busy here, and it seems they never have enough wait staff, but at least they don't rush you once you are seated. I find the signature hot chocolate at this location more watery than usual (comparing to Burlington Arcade, Tokyo Ginza and the Champs Elysées locations). My sister ordered "Thé Mélange Ladurée" tea, and it was heavenly! One of the most wonderful desserts is the Saint-Honorés, which is a rose and raspberry pastry dessert. One cannot step into Ladurée without having a macaron, or several, and they carry some limited edition boxes for them here if you wish to purchase them. My favourites are the Salted Caramel, Vanilla and Pistachio. When I was most recently there in January the seasonal flavours were Chestnut & Pear, Coconut, Grape & Cinnamon, and Almond Marshmallow

A friend of mine from France and was talking about this place while we were hanging out. The next day I went to Harrod's with another friend and decided to check it out. Most of the restaurants in Harrod's have afternoon tea, all priced around £20, so I decided to go here. We only waited for about 15 minutes before being seated in the Black Room. While waiting, I hopped over to the counter and bought a few French macaroons. I've had them in LA once, but they usually sell out, so I haven't had it in a while. I got a mint, vanilla, chocolate, rose, and pistachio all for a little under £7, a decent price. I really like the ambiance and decor of the place. They also have 3 different rooms, each with a different decoration theme. I ordered the afternoon tea and chose the smoked salmon and cheese sandwiches, traditional laudree croissant, sugar broiche, dark chocolate cake, and rose French macaroon with raspberries (can't remember which items they were on the menu since these options are listed in French); for the tea, I chose the Melange Special Laudree. The tea came first and it was really delicious and full of flavor (rose, vanilla, orange, and cinnamon according to the menu). It was a perfect blend. I couldn't finish all my food, so I shared with my friend. She ate one of my sandwiches and half of the cake and French macaroon. The bill came out to £23 including service charge, which isn't bad considering it's enough to feed 2 people...except that my friend neglected to offer to chip in... Anyhow, it was worth the £23 for the experience, not to mention eating at such a place I wouldn't normally eat at back home. Seeing as this is London, I have to try the afternoon teas wherever I go since I love tea. It's just that, 2 students sitting amidst tables of well-dressed families/couples was a little uncomfortable; I still enjoyed the experience and the food. Oh yes, the French macaroons were DELICIOUS! I ate them all in one sitting later in the evening. My favorite of the 5 were the vanilla and rose; I didn't particularly like the mint one (I think there was anise in it as well). I wish I could buy a box full and take them home back to the States...however they need to be eaten fresh and they're delicate. By the time I got home they were smushed...

Best thing in the world, saint of rose !

Make sure you find it though because there's lots to recommend it! With a unique set of flavours divided into themes, this chocolate is delicate and quite pleasant. It's going to be different from anything you'll find elsewhere and you'll be appreciated no matter what you select. The easiest option rather than be overwhelmed by the selection is to go for a themed box. The Kaori box is going to make you the star of any party with a selection of very different flavours you can eat alone or dip in to another flavour to enjoy. I had the opportunity to sample this at my leisure along with a few chocolates and I can report back that while not all of the box of Kaori was quite to my taste, things that I did not think were to my taste were not as bad as I thought. The balance is well done here and the Kalamansi can be used like glue so dip your stick in there before your choice of Orange and Cocoa Nibs or Matcha Green Tea and Poppy Seeds power to coat the outside. It did take some getting used to but for a gift or at a party, this would be superb. While we did sample most of the chocolate bars we ran out of time to try much else as Harrods was closing! Of the few chocolates I sampled, the white was predictably sweet but the dark pleasantly mild. There was not as much body to the dark as I have become used to but hey I did enjoy it nonetheless. The milk was too sweet for me but many people will find this the perfect milk chocolate as it mirrors more closely the flavour and sweetness many expect in a milk chocolate.
