Our dog is a big boxer and trying to wash him at home is super difficult. He either jumps out of the bath or runs away from the hose in the backyard, either way it is a total pain in the you-know-where. The Happy Pet Company has a bath with nice high sides and plenty of washing settings in the hose. It is operated with coins so make sure to bring plenty of gold. It generally costs us around $8 to give him a thorough scrubbing and about $5 for a lazy wash. The shop itself also sells dog treats, dog food, toys and bedding. They offer dog washing and grooming as well but this is a little expensive for my budget. Be careful if you come here with a big dog as there are often dogs all over the place. Our dog loves 'socialising' with other dogs but sadly others don't like being pinned to the floor with a big paw. For this reason I always go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

When I picked up my dog an hour later after clipping there was no explanation or apology. They happily charged me $65 and let me have the dry doggie treat I chose for free (20c). I've been there a few times but they never remember my name or My dog. I can tell they are not really pet lovers at all, but just see every customer like a walking wallet. The best pet store owner sold her business Pet Station years ago. I wish she'd come back because nobody genuinely cares about animals the way she did.

My cat hates the vet. She turns into a vicious little monster every time the word vet is even…read morementioned. So having to actually take her into one is a momentous task. The last time I took her to the vet she ended up clawing the back of the vet, and trying to swing from the 2 meter high window sill. I took her into Glenvale vet, in Glen Waverley, ready for a war. We waited less than ten minutes, which was a good start. When we were called in, the vet was lovely. She was very gentle and friendly towards my cat, and my cat really responded to that. I was shocked when she proceeded to purr and rub herself up against the vet. I have never seen her behave so relaxed in the company of a vet. She was even more than happy to allow the vet to take her temp. My cat ended up needed a course of antibiotics, and I took her back in for a follow up and was not charged for the second consult. I thought that was fantastic. It is expensive enough to care for animals without the added cost of expensive vet trips. Even now I live a good distance away from this vet, but it's worth me traveling there when my cat needs attention because I know she feels comfortable there.

We'd been using a competing vet on Lygon Street and found them to be less so, and constantly pushing expensive insurance plans whilst giving hypochondriacal diagnoses. So we changed vets and gave Fitzroy Veterinary Clinic a chance. First impressions? It's busy. Busy and efficient. The crowd dispersed after a few minutes but it gave us a chance to see what it's like here when they're under pressure, and it was a relaxed environment. There's a dog side and a cat side to this place, and decorated accordingly. Our own little fur-ball doesn't travel well and gets a bit nervous in new places, but this was as good as we could hope for, given our in-and-out 'check up' we were there for. We were kept waiting for half an hour beyond our allotted time, but I suspect we arrived at the tail-end of a particularly busy period. Before long, we'd completed the forms and were ushered in to see a very friendly, plain-speaking vet who never once attempted to sign us up to an insurance plan, or push anything other than an honest verdict on how little Samson was doing. And he's doing just fine. We left really satisfied with the experience and confident we made the right change.

The shop does have a lot of gorgeous little pups who break your heart when you are forced to look at them for the last time before leaving. If they didn't cost so much I worry about how many I could have bought... Apart from the gorgeous pups the store stocks all things for dogs. There is food, collars, leads, and of course, toys. The infamous Kong toys have a big section on the wall and there are great ones suited to dogs of all sizes and temperaments. My dog tends to rip through most of his toys in minutes but he has never beaten a Kong toy. Granted they are massive and made from thick rubber, but it is still impressive. They do cost more than the average toy however and you'll be looking at around $15-$30 for one. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and welcoming. She could tell I wasn't in to buy a puppy so she left me to have fun looking at the puppies and checking out the toys. The shop is clean, there is a heap of stock and heaps of puppies around to show you their best puppy-dog-eyes expressions. It's really fun.

I was assured they weren't, and they seemed to genuinely care about animal welfare, talking to another customer and telling them they should really wash their hands before touching one dog and going to another. The dogs all seemed well cared for and had been microchipped, fully vaccinated and guaranteed vet cover for 2 weeks after adoption, which I thought was really good. The only thing I didn't like was when I asked about my puppy's parents I was given a photo printed out on a piece of paper of just ONE of the parents, and no details. Still a little iffy about the place, but I got a beautiful new addition to my family and they were friendly and helpful enough.

(Public holidays they are open from 10-4). One store is dedicated to all things fish, birds and reptiles - including the live animals themselves. Prices here are really good and the animals are well looked after. The fish tanks are clean and the staff are really good at chasing down the exact specimen you want for your new pet. The second store is for kittens, puppies, small animals and grooming needs. They provide a grooming service here but I have never utilized that. While meandering around their pet toys you can hear the sound of puppies playing and kittens purring - nothing like the kind of pet store where the animals are asleep in tiny boxes. The staff are happy to let you have a hold or a play with the animals. In terms of pet accessories these guys have everything. Albeit groovy dog collars, piles of pet food, mirrors for your birdcage or all manner of fish tanks - you are bound to find it here. They even have a Do It Yourself coin operated dog wash in their store which is always a lot of splashy fun - depending on how well behaved your dog is. Lucky for owners of escape artists it has a reasonably tall gate that prevents your dog from jumping out. I recommend keeping the lead on just in case. I don't really go to the other part of the store with the birds and fish. I like that they now have pet adoption, which I think they have had for a while but I only noticed a few months ago.
