They allow you to bring your own bottle of wine which also keeps the price down, even though they do have a license. We picked mains and deserts from the lunch menu which were all fantastic - including shetland mussels, spiced lamb filet, corn fed chicken breast and sticky toffee pudding. Definitely the best meal I've had in Edinburgh for a long time!

So good we went twice last week. Making me the Duchess ;)!…read more The Walnut is the latest addition to the hip happenings of Leith Walk. What used to be Cafe No.9 has now been transformed into a very cute French bistro. We decided to treat ourselves one Friday after a long week at work and as it is over the road from us we couldn't really resist! Table booked and BYOB wine in hand we headed in. The staff are delightful and we were shown to our table. This place is not big - about 8 tables - and they don't have printed menus as this changes daily. Instead they ask you to look at the chalkboard mounted on the wall. The Walnut offers a range of starters and mains, all are very reasonably priced, I go for the chicken liver parfait and David decides to throw a curve ball and orders the cheese board to start :-/. For main, the roasted cod for me and the lamb hotpot for David. As I said our waitress is great, she is adorable and very attentive. Before I know it I'm devouring my parfait. It is delicious made even better by the homemade oatcakes, I only got two though. More, more, more please! Our mains were equally as delicious. My fish was perfectly cooked. The portion sizes are generous but not over the top so we were nicely full. There is always room for desert however. I went for more cheese and David went for the chocolate tart - nom nom nom. All this came to £40! Amazing! Go - go now! Cheers, Amy

This is the second time I've been there this week on an Edinburgh daytrip, it's starting to feel…read morelike an honorary 'local'. Pub quiz with a vegan meetup group was the reason on Monday, and today was the case of an hour before my bus leaves, where is close by where service will be reasonably fast and I know I can eat? ! Also, because of the excellently labelled vegan options on the menu and I'd spied a couple of options to keep in mind for a return trip. On Monday I had the vegan chilli dog (£9) - which I suspect is Linda McCartney sausages - which comes with skinny fries. Normally I find skinny fries a bit mediocre to wedges/thick cut chips but these were really tasty. Service for most of us was pretty quick, though one of my friends had to wait some time (an hour?) because of an oversight somewhere leading to lack of a matching table number. Tonight service was very fast (thankfully, we made our bus!) and I'd opted for the vegan burger. It's a good firm patty and comes in a seeded bun with sauce on top and bottom of the patty - I think a salsa of some kind. Unless it's unwelcome mayo and it's vegan I'm not too fussy and I don't always notice these things! It comes with the skinny fries, and a non-creamy coleslaw. I'm told by friends that many of the drinks on their menu are vegan - I opted for an Innis & Gunn beer on Monday and today I got a Williams Bros 'Midnight Sun' ; otherwise the beers aren't labelled so if you're bothered about alcohol being animal product-free checking the Barnivore website is often a good bet. Their soup is labelled vegan, and they have a vegan special (this week was tarka dal) and a dipping platter with a few things including hummus and pesto and flatbread. The decor is made up of dark red walls featuring movie posters, and both sofa areas and tables with chairs to suit whichever seating area you feel like having. I feel quite relaxed in there and could easily sit with a pint (or two) for an hour. The TV was showing a movie with subtitles, and although maybe a little anti-social, I was pleased to see it as so many times I have seen pubs showing TV programmes or movies with just the picture and no subtitles (or audio) - what is the point in that?! It's 50p charge if you want to use a credit/debit card, but they do also offer cashback.

Loved the Monday night pub trivia. The questions really stumped me!…read more The veggie burger was really good with the goat cheese and onion ring. I don't think I'd ever think there was too much goat cheese, but I think it was because the cheese was a bit too crumbly. I would have liked creamier cheese on the burger to combat the crunchy patty, crisp bread, and battered onion rings. The pesto taste wasn't very strong either but it was a good consistency. The curry fries were heavenly and I think I could have eaten an entire bowl. The beers and ciders selection is great! Loved the German beer on tap and the elderflower bottled cider. Bartender was super nice and patient as I asked about all the choices. Nice pub for a pint :)

The residents (myself included) are constantly on the phone with the police and the City Council with complaints because, in addition to all the noise, they have to clean up vomit and/or blood and pick up empty bottles, cigarette butts, and beer cups strewn along the residential street connected to this corner bar on a regular basis from the local drunks and after-hour boisterous patrons who migrate to this spot. I was always curious about this brightly painted pub which opened in back in 2009, I just don't know it took me so long to venture into it?! It's a niche bar, specialising in German weissbier and boy, do they know their stuff! The bar staff are always super friendly and happy to recommend their latest German beer to suit your taste. The beers change often so you'll always find something new. As well as loving bikes and German beer... they love dogs too! I've never been in here and not seen a furry four legged friend. There's lots of unique memorabilia on the walls to keep you distracted and a fish tank too. The pub has a friendly loyal but diverse group of followers and Tourmalet have made it a welcoming cosy space for everyone. Thankfully you can leave the cycling shorts at home in order to be a part of it!

Most reviewers had…read morethe pasta dishes, and while I do agree that the price is a bit high for pasta take-away (versus sitting in at Vittoria right beside Eatalias) I'm not sure the establishment deserves to be marked down for that. Especially since you have the choice to go elsewhere rather than pay that price for pasta. Nonetheless, everyone is very well entitled to rate on what is important to them. For myself (and 7 year old son) we like the pizza. Scratch that, we loooove the pizza. I've never ordered the pasta and have very rarely tried the chips (think they were a tad soggy the last time) but this review will be just on the pizza and service, which I think both are great! Eatalias is practically on my doorstep and I've been going here every other week for 4 years. They've certainly earned my patronage as they are always warm and welcoming when we come in. They are a family run establishment and are just always so cheerful and ready to ask my son how he's doing. We never order big, as it's just the two of us, but that never detracts from the service we get. Prices - very good. We order a 12" or 16" half margarita half pepperoni which is always between £8- £12. In my opinion this is very well priced considering Dominos or Pizza Hut always end up being around £20 for the same. Maybe is because we go in to get it but even so. Quality - I've never been disappointed by a pizza here. The crust is a thin Italian base and they always use fresh ingredients. I personally do not enjoy thick crust pizza so it's to my tastes. Sometimes more cheese and less sauce is needed but after 4 years and that's my only complaint. I love many of their other pizzas with some delicious toppings (sadly the boy doesn't like veggies on a pizza!) and even better some super spicy ones. All in all I'll continue to get my bi-weekly Friday night pizza from here...until I move perhaps. Perhaps not! I would say you wouldn't be disappointed by ordering a pizza here, but everyone has a particular taste for pizza. But it's far better than Dominos or Pizza Hut!!! PS - they have Gluten free crusts now and I believe they are part of Taste of Italy.
