Attempted twice, horrible service. They seat you in a corner then manager disappears, staff ignores. This happened twice so not a one off. Do not recommend. We are staying at the George hotel and disappointing to have the attached bar be horrible.

Fantastic location, ambiance and food right in the middle of new town. We popped in for lunch and were seated in a cozy window nook upstairs. They were playing great music, not too loud and the service was quick and friendly. Overall relaxing and a great place to spend time. Since it was lunch, the two of us split an appetizer and had a couple of mains. The courgette, mint, feta and rocket salad was brilliant. Salty, charred, bitter and minty all at once. For mains we had the steak sandwich with marrow butter and the fish fingers with chips. Both were excellent, well cooked and nicely portioned. Top marks for food, service and ambiance, am looking forward to coming back for dinner.

Y'all know I take my dining experience seriously especially when I go to a place that requires me to dig a little deeper in my pocket to pay. I'm happy to do that on occasions since food and dining out are some of my life passions, but be sure I'm going to be critical. One of my fave people was here from Manchester over the weekend and we wanted to try a new place to eat that served something of the new modern Scottish food. I was excited about this place because the restaurant looked amazing from the website and the menu showcased Scottish meat, fish and produce. The first negative happened when I called for reservation. To be fair it was a late request for reservation on a Saturday night but I wanted to try my luck. Not surprisingly the staff said they were all booked and the next open table was at 9:30pm... Fair. I told my friend this and she said hold up... Text me back and told me they lied! Apparently she was able to get reservation through opentables.com.... That annoyed me! So lesson learn... Go on open tables for reservations instead! The restaurant looked similar enough to its picture on the website, but it did remind me the many times I see someone's pic on a dating app and I meet them and I'm like wtf... When was your pic taken?! Anyways...I was starving and I just wanted food. We barely got the menu and the waitress came up and asked for our drinks order. Well first off, we just literally sat and we weren't given a drinks menu... So no, I don't know what I want... Thanks! After waiting a while for the waitress to come back and finally get our drinks and food orders we sat there for a bit...We got a bottle of prosecco and it wasn't cheap. Now I don't really care if I'm getting served and the server making sure my glass is full of wine, but in this case I did mind cause the bottle was expensive and in any other restaurant, the server would have made sure my glass was full. The server in this case never bothered checking and we had to serve ourselves. The food finally came and the pigeon breast with beet salad was tasty. My friend got the scallops with squid ink risotto... I was really impressed with the flavours of that dish! The scallops was cooked very well... Tender but still soft. We both ordered the stone bass with mussels. This was ok... The mussels didn't taste fresh and the fish wasn't amazing. The cream sauce went decently with the fish and spinach while it didn't do anything for the mussels. For £21, this fish dish is not worth getting cause I was calculating it in my head and I probably would have spent the same amount or less if I cooked the dish for my friend and I myself.... Just saying. We didn't bother trying their desserts cause I wasn't impressed and I just wanted to go. When we got the bill... ( a hefty one) I saw that they included a 10% service fee. I was so annoyed.considering their service was poor! I frankly wouldn't have tipped them especially since they barely did anything and I had to walk across the entire restaurant trying to find a server to get our bill so we can go. The food was ok in this place, but frankly I'd go to another restaurant that can probably cook as well, charge for the same or similar price, and have better service!

    Bramble cocktail. Yum!

Popped in for a few drinks. The bar area was really busy so we sat in the other area. I'm not sure if I like the new layout & location of the bar. It was so crowded & being smaller, seemed much noisier. Maybe I'm just getting old! The cocktails were good, standard central Edinburgh prices. Service was efficient.

I am a member of a flight crew and as I was eating dinner I was asked to get catering for a flight literally the next morning. I asked the manager if he could make me some take away (to-go) steaks cooked rare to be cooked further on the plane. (I'm a private flight attendant and we cook and plate everything onboard). He went out of his way to make sure I recieved all the items cooked perfectly. Passengers left raving about the food!!! And these are passengers that definitely eat the best steaks. The manager even talked me through a playing game plan and I ran my thoughts of the dishes with him and wow, perfect outcome. I personally got the coley fish dish and started with some cheese. I am a big bleu cheese/stilton girl and it was all amazing. Everything was so good I used the bread from my cheese to mop up every ounce of juice left from coley plate. Great service, great views, and incredible food. All local and ever changing menu to fit what's in market. You'll see handwritten additions to each menu like the cheese and fish. The steaks were the 35 day dry hung flat iron steaks.

Ambiance was super cute and upstairs even cuter I think (we were seated downstairs) and service was excellent. - Afternoon tea - 5/5 and I've been to had 50 or more high teas in my life in places such as London, Hong Kong, NYC, San Francisco, Honolulu... What was great about this high teas was the unlimited tea and coffee and they had many dairy milk alternatives: soy, oat, almond which is very unusual and appreciated! I had: - iced vanilla turmeric lychee matcha - 5/5 so delicious! And so unusual! - The Ivy English breakfast tea - 4/5 solid tea offering - truffle chicken salad sandwich on small roll - 5/5 - egg salad on wheat bread - 5/5 - smoked salmon on cream cheese on top of pastry puff pastry - gave this to my husband who downed it in a second so must have been good! - two raisin scones - 5/5 delicious! With clotted cream and strawberry jam - lemon poppyseed muffin - 4/5, husband ate it, was a little too sweet for me but super cute with bee on top - raspberry crème brulee - 4/5, solid offering - chocolate mousse in a pot - 5/5 super adorable presentation of the dessert in a little flower pot with chocolate cookie crumble "dirt" and mint leaves as the "plant" I almost didn't want to eat it! For all of this the price was very reasonable and my husband who does not appreciate high teas could order his beer and some smoked salmon off the à la carte menu. I highly recommend The Ivy on The Square for high teas!

I said for the size of our group can we get the other tables towards the back. There were other tables available and all right behind us. The hostess said no absolutely not guests were to be assigned to their tables. There were people behind us but they were after us; plus they were of smaller size than ours, clearly our skin color is the main issue. They sat us down, and quite a few minutes pass, others trickle in and promptly everyone bumps into me. At which point I told the hostess this is not acceptable. They sat 2 people at a table for 4, in the back while this table of 4 is really too small for 4 people. One thing stood out to me, we were the only non whites. When the last group again bumped into me, I asked to be moved; she then said due to short of staff they cannot change the seating but seeing seriously everyone is bumping into me, she begrudgingly moved us to a corner table with no lights - and not surprisingly no service. I understand the importance of trying to make the white people feel comfortable about not being seen with non whites - the best way is tuck the non whites away - but this is 2022. I am from California and no, this is absolutely unacceptable. Like MLK junior or Rosa Parks, we protected, first by requesting to be moved away from the hallway, then by my two teens and I walking out of the restaurant and finding more tolerant non racist restaurant to eat, and we spent a lot of money on the other restaurant. You too can make a decision to either eat or not eat at this place. The choice is entirely up to you. And this will define who you are.
