Poor Customer Service.... Trying to purchase an expensive meal from the deli for dinner. I walked up to the cashier by the lottery machine. While paying for my food, I asked the cashier to cash out a $4 powerball ticket...She stated that I would have to get in the line in front of lottery machine. ...even though I was the only customer in both lines. She stated that she can't do two things at once....when the the manager came down...I asked him if he could cash the ticket out since she couldn't turn her body around to do it....He told me that she can do it! Black women continue to be the most disrespected in America. I have learned my lesson! read more

This place is Disgusting!!! Please do not buy meat from here. Last Friday I bought a couple NY Strip Steaks from Lafayette Foods, took them home and set them in the refrigerator for the next day. The steaks looked red and fresh when I put them in the fridge. The very next day I took them out and they were completely BROWN! I was completely confused as to what was happening and opened one of the steak packages. The smell was horrific. I took the steaks back to the store and showed them to the manager. I asked him if they had colored the steaks that were on display and he said no, and that he will take me to the back area and slice me some new steaks. I agreed just to get a look at the prep area and thank god I did. What I saw will keep me from ever going in there again. There was dried up blood everywhere, even all over the white Styrofoam trays they use to display the meats. While the manager was in the walk-in fridge I used the time to pull out my cell phone and snap a few quick pictures before he came back. When he returned, he immediately pulled a knife from the knife rack, which was also disgusting. There were chunks of dried bloody meat bits all around the hole where the knife slides into, which tell you they just stick dirty, bloody knives in there all the time. The cutting board still had blood all over it.... Just terrible. There is a cross contamination in this place that is dangerous. I made a formal complaint to have this place inspected and I can't wait until Natasha gets in there and starts slapping people around. I'm going to post my pictures but i'm sure they will try to take this down when they see it so i'm sharing on facebook. Stay Away!!! read more

Lafayette Foods is a relatively small grocery store. They seem to have all of the essentials, plus a few extras, like live houseplants. Looking at photos, I can say that the store does not really resemble the place it was 5 years ago. That being said the service was friendly and professional. The checkout was quick. I was able to find all the things that I was looking for. The prices were a little higher than at my local grocery, but weren't ridiculous. There is a parking lot and accessibility. They do offer hot and cold prepared foods, including rotisserie chicken. You can tell that they do care about the food they are selling. For example, the asparagus is standing and displayed with the cut ends in water to preserve their freshness. It's a good option for basic needs. read more

We have been able to walk to our local market for daily necessities ( no food desert here suburbanites ). Lafayette has been stocked and working normal Hours to support their community. Shelves have been stocked with goods, staff has been helpful and friendly despite working long hours. We are blessed to have them in our Detroit Downtown Eastside community. read more

The common shopping grounds for tenants at Lafayette Towers, The Pavilion, DuCharme, and the Townhouses. It's a very conveniently placed grocery store in the more residential area of downtown Detroit. They keep their meat and vegetable prices fairly low. And they keep your basics well stocked, including milk, eggs, and OJ. That said, don't expect a Whole Foods level of variety. But it can very easily be your go to spot for weekly restocking. As an added bonus, they also sell wine and beer. Some good variety of IPAs and local beers, if that's your thing. read more

Ok store. A welcomed addition to area needing a grocery store -- great to have one downtown with ample parking but their prices are well above average for average NON SPECIALTY items! Why? Their deli/ take out sections rival Whole Foods in regards to 'pricing'. For example: a take-away very small container of Mac and Cheese $4.00! I expect to pay more for deli and take out foods when they are 'specialty' items, but noot Mac and Cheese. I wish the produce department was larger, and I would think it would be for a store in Downtown Detroit. I will check out again and update this review if warranted. read more

The first time I went in I met one of the managers and he went as far to tell me if I ever needed something they don't carry they would order it for me. Plus the have booze! We live in the Lafayette Park area, and this store is a great addition to the neighborhood. They carry Spartan products and will have a Sav-More (I think) pharmacy soon. It's fairly small, but honestly a lot better than I expected from this size store. The staff is super-friendly, which I really appreciate. I'm always greeted when I come in, when we get lunch meat the deli guy gives us samples, I'm often asked if I need help finding anything, etc. I'm used to smaller stores having an almost convenience-store inventory, with stuff at or past the expiration dates, not having the brands I want, etc., but I've been really pleased with Lafayette so far. They have Boar's Head lunch meat, which can be hard to find and is the best, they've got Calder milk and ice cream, and Great Lakes coffee. They're not so good for household items or pet food...I buy my cat food from Meijer basically so I can get larger quantities. But it's fine if you run out of something and need to grab it here. To be honest I'm not very price-conscious with groceries, so I can't say if they're very expensive here. I think they're probably more than a bigger store, but I haven't noticed that anything was outrageous, and I'm paying for the convenience of something I don't have to drive to. I'd rather shop at a smaller local store anyway than somewhere like Wal-Mart. With Lafayette for about half of our groceries and Eastern Market for the rest, it's rare that we have to make a trip elsewhere. read more

I'm a fan of Lafayette foods for a number of reasons. For starters, this place has some very friendly workers, who are always willing to help me out. They don't just say "the crackers are in aisle 4" they walk me over to it, they ask what brand is my favorite. That's the kind of service I appreciate. This is an independent store, so no, don't expect a Wal-Mart out of the place, but do expect to find most of the groceries you're looking for. I'll be honest, I've been pushing for some Texas Toast on the loaf at LF, but I'm not trippin'. I especially love the Heart & Soul deli, those folks can really cook. I've even had corned beef eggrolls (NOM NOM NOM) from there. They were great! They have lots of other hot food choices, too. And those choices rotate daily. It's a quaint store, not huge, but definitely what we need in the area and they serve the community well. read more

A pet peeve of mine is when people talk about how there's no grocery shopping in Detroit, except for Whole Foods or the 8 & Woodward Meijer. Not true! And I'm not just talking about the greater downtown area, there are smaller name, quality grocers scattered around all the neighborhoods. But, that's a tangent for another time. Lafayette Foods is located just outside of Greektown in the Lafayette Park area. It's a solid stop for all your grocery needs. Their dry goods and household item selection is small, but they have you covered on the food, including some pre-prepared options and a deli counter. There's not much in the way of specialty foods - if you're looking for something organic, ethnic, or otherwise uncommon, you likely won't find it here. But all your basic needs are definitely covered, with decent selection and prices. Unlike the big name stores, this one is never crowded and I always feel better knowing I'm putting my money towards an independent store that's been in the community since back before it started becoming cool to be here. Open til 9:00 six nights a week, which is great, and I think until 7 on Sundays. read more

I am in town for a Volleyball tournament and needed a bulk order, after contacting the store manger he was kind enough to help me get the food I needed and also help me deliver it back to my hotel. This is a quaint little grocery store near downtown. Its the closest grocery store to where my partner lives. It is not huge but it has the essentials including wine and beer. It also has a deli with good food to go. The only downside is that is closes early. I'm used to having 24 hour stores near where I live. They also have plate meals for $7.99. I thought it was a bit high, but their portions are HUGE. I ordered fried chicken. I got to choose my pieces and got two legs, a thigh, and a wing. For my two sides I chose dressing and mac n' cheese. I also had a choice of cornbread or a dinner roll, and of course, I chose the cornbread. The downside was that the food was probably cooked way earlier that day, so the chicken was just ok. I didn't eat all of it and it wasn't too great the next day. The cornbread was also a bit dry for my taste. The mac n' cheese was good, but it was obviously a powdered cheese. The winner of the meal was the dressing. It was obviously made in house and had chicken in it. I wish more places had dressing as a standard side. For grocery store food, this was a winner. The guy working the counter was also really friendly and let us taste whatever we wanted. He said the dressing was "damn good." The portions are so huge that my plate was pretty heavy. The cashier said it was so heavy, I was going to get a new rump, which would be good for twerking if I decided to take that up in the future. Ha ha. read more

This is my favorite independent owned supermarket in the downtown Detroit area. I always have to shop at a place that has a deli, and when I stay at my cousins apartment downtown, I come to Lafayette foods. I am greeted with smiles and friendly faces right as I walk in, and I am greeted by the manager of the store who is always very helpful in giving me options on organic and gluten free products. Although this store is smaller than your local Meijer or Kroger, they seem to have it all. There deli is nothing short of amazing. They have a wide selection of fried foods, which I love because I'm a fat kid who loves cake. They also serve your typical sides (mashed potatoes, macaroni, fries...etc), but they make them taste so delicious! They also have great quality lunch meat that they can slice up for you behind the counter along with many many side salads and slaws. I recommend Lafayette Foods to anyone in the downtown area. You will definitely leave knowing you spent your money right. read more

I live in the neighborhood and I am trying to support this store---and while it is a good addition I've found them lagging lately. This morning they left me and two other shoppers waiting over 15 minutes for an employee to go outside and bring in the Sunday papers---only to tell two of us that there were no NYTimes--no explanation and no apology. If you are going to be a smaller business you have to give good service. This doesn't make it. The employees seem very disinterested in stepping up to a service level that will make neighborhood residents make this their first choice for shopping. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I walk in the door and am greeted by name with a smile. Steve, the manager made it a point to introduce himself and make sure that all my needs were met, asking if there was anything I needed that wasn't stocked, but of course they already had everything I need. They are independently owned in the era of Walmart, which makes me feel good about shopping there. They stock an impressive variety of foods at a fair price. They also stock many local food products, and I love supporting fellow Michigan businesses. They are also within walking distance of my work wish is amazing considering I live downtown and do not own a car. They are clean, tidy, the deli food is awesome (make sure you try the Friday fish fry), and the selection of craft beer and wine is off the hook. Also Dollar General is right next door so you don't have to go out to 7-Mile to get your household items. This market is a great addition to our neighborhood. It is a relatively small market and when they do not have something we want we tell Lance and he orders it. We have received that response many times. He hires from the neighborhood and he chooses carefully. He has a loyal staff of young people who are always pleasant and helpful. We shop there frequently and a number of the employees call us by name and we reciprocate. The store has a deli with a variety of cooked and baked goods. They daily make delicious soups. I live in the Midtown area which makes it an easy drive to Lafayette Foods. Usually, I would prefer a big box store over locally run stores because of lower prices and better quality foods, but this market pretty much has it all. Each isle provides diverse food options from organics to whole wheats which makes shopping healthy and easy task. Meats are always stocked and look/ taste fresh. The produce has great selection (although would be nice to see fresher strawberries and grapes!). I am not a wine drinker but have noticed their new wine shelf with many different brands and types of wines. Also, beer selection was great. Prices are fairly competitive and make a 20-25min drive to Walmart or Meijer unnecessary. This store totally flipped my misconception about local Detroit stores upside down by keeping items fresh, isles stocked, and the overall store very clean. Staff was very friendly and often times quite comical. I easily give this store a 4 out 5 but really appreciate the work they put into making this local Detroit store a great place to shop so 5 out 5! Thank you! read more

I like to shop local when I can but very few options in downtown. But this place has decent stuff. Sometimes certain specialty vegs like sprouts, fresh spinach are spoiled or wilting. Sometimes can get great sales though. It's a smaller place so I'm guessing it's harder to keep prices on par with say, Meijers but some prices are much higher, some prices are definitely on par...and they have sales, like I said. read more
