Just left this store and I'm taken back by how awesome it is I had to download yelp just to make a review how plesently surprised I was from the moment you walked in you're met with good music and a friendly atmosphere I have no clue how they pack so much stuff in such a small spot from the outside, you would imagine it had maybe a chip isle drinks and a few beers but when I say they have evening they like literally have 10 isles full of different brands and products i don't know how I've never been to this place and I've lived down here for 10 years and the cherry on top was the solo cashier black guy with dreads he was bouncing back-and-forth between three registers while still helping customers in the aisle he was nice and very helpfully and will Defently be part of the reason I come back read more

This place has everything you need when visiting Detroit. I specifically went for drinks and snacks for my hotel room. This place has more, much more. I appreciate the fact that it stays open late, considering most of the restaurants downtown close early by Miami standards. I did deduct one star because it's a bit sketch. This very densely packed market has narrow aisles and shelves that extend to just about the limit of what I can reach. But for those who live in Bricktown or Greektown or perhaps you're staying at one of the nearby hotels, it's got what you need. Everything from snacks and drinks to laundry detergent and fresh meats. There's barely enough room for two people to pass down an aisle so be prepared. But for us, looking for beers and some spirits to enjoy back at the hotel? Just what we needed. We were staying at a nearby hotel and were just looking for some drinks and snacks. Our hotel told us this market was only 2 blocks away. So glad we came because it was a real experience. It is probably the most efficient use of space I have ever encountered in my life. It was amazing how much stuff they were able to fit into this store. You have to try it yourself. read more

I've stopped in here a few times while staying nearby for work. City Market is a good option for me as I'm frequently here on weekends when many places shutdown here. Specifically grab and go places. Sit down restaurants are open but I don't gravitate towards those when traveling often. The aisles are quite small, but you'll find a lot of offerings. The aisles can be like a Goonies movie...you take a left turn down an aisle what am I going to find? Right turn? Some lead to dead ends. Some lead to a service entrance that seems fairly expansive. You do need to watch for expiration dates here. I didn't find any expired items I got but I get the other reviews highlighting that. I took my time and found decent offerings. The falafel was one, but very dry. Hummus to dip into would have been a good addition. Service is good. I'll be back. read more

OK so after watching some guys do pushups at the red light of Brush and Congress I noticed this spot. Late night hungry and uber still searching for a ride.. In we go Its open til 2am so if the door is locked its due to capacity. They will let you in shortly. As I told my sweet thing reminds me of spot in New Orleans. Hot food, cold food, deli sandwiches, snacks, liquor. Everything you need. Friendly staff and folks with grocery carts really doing their shopping at 1 am. I went to the market today to try some vegan prepared food from a local business. It seemed like a nice store until I went past the produce section looking for some fruit. The fruit was moldy and unappealing. There were several items on the sleeves that were beyond the sell by dates on the shelf. I left with nothing. The star is for the hours as they are open early and close late which is helpful as there are not many options near Greektown for a market. read more

I visited City Market to pickup coffee for a friend. Yes, I got my own as well. There were numerous options to select from. I left with a vanilla blend that smells delicious. I don't drink much coffee these days but wanted to try their blend. Once I got home, the coffee tasted as good as it smelled! I also purchased a very, very large bag of gummy worms for my grand. This was the largest bag I have every seen. I think it was 3 lbs. She was ecstatic and I encouraged her to share with many. There were numerous other items I would have loved to have for my home but since I was traveling, I didn't want to shop. It would be very nice to have a store like this at home. read more

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES! I think I would never say it to a supermarket but this place is VERY COZY. The alleys are tiny and you keep finding new alleys with other products right when I thought were the drink section or dairy section was. The price for some products here and there can be pretty cheap but overall a little pricier than normal. It's a grocery store that opens late and has a liquor section. If there was anything below 1 star that is what I would give them. I'm not from Detroit and this store is not organized and the aisles are extremely small. As I am searching for a can of tomatoes I turn around to see and employee following me. She tries real quick to hide and act as if she was looking at something. I politely walked to the register, handing them my cart and letting them know that I knew what they were doing. To their credit she didn't try to deny it. read more

This is hands down the best market/bodega in the entire city. It has an insane amount of selection packed in here so it is very cramped. Everything from eggs and yogurt to premade and frozen meals to dessert to a very impressive selection of alcohol. Definitely try the homemade baklava!! read more

The store is fairly nice with fresh produce (although some of it is expired), prepared food, and a decent beer & wine section. Unfortunately, I can not give City Market 5 stars because I bought some meat and cheese that was 2 months past the sell by date. A sale sticker was used to cover the date. Downtown Detroit lacks any sort of good grocery store or market, aside from Eastern Market and Whole Foods, which is on the opposite side of town of City Market. City Market is located on the corner of Congress and Brush, across from Sweetwater Tavern. My friend and I actually stumbled upon this place on a fluke. I'm in the area frequently and it was honestly the first time I took notice of it. The place itself is small, but in a good way. The owners have made a point to keep things squished together to carry more items. Prices were a tad bit high ($5 for a box of PopTarts. Really?!) but that's expected in a downtown city. There's still a good assortment of products. Fresh produce? Check. Freshly made sandwiches and salads? Check. Cookies, cereal, frozen items, and snacks? Check. Beer, liquor, pop, milk? Check. Good luck getting down the aisles, as they are tiny in width. But that's what made my journey through the store a fun adventure! I'm not saying you can do all your grocery shopping here. It's certainly not a Kroger. However, given the circumstances, this is an establishment where you will be able to do some of your grocery shopping in quick time. Items are fresh and in date. Employees are welcome to assist you. The only negative is that you have to spend $5 to be able to use a credit card, which is expected already at some convenience stores. Thank you for being here City Market! As flight crew coming into a big city late at night and looking for a quick and healthy bite to eat after working all day, this compact market was a blessing. Fresh fruit and veg, local products, and a ready to eat hot section. I got a Norwegian salmon dinner with rice and green beans, plus some bananas, baby carrots and a bag of local pop daddy pretzels in peppercorn ranch flavor. I went to this store and got liquor and decided to check out the deli and up to that point I thought it was a pretty nice store. I approached the counter and rang the bell per the sign. So I rang the bell and the young lady who walked up had the nastiest look on her face, didn't say hello or can I help you, do I said hello (May have been a little sarcastic) at any rate she just kind of looked at me and I said nevermind. To narrow down the staff it was Saturday, December 9th, short blond hair. Advice to the manager; get rid of this young lady, she is costing you money and business. Only buy pre-packaged items here. I got a salad once and the cucumbers were rotten. This was back in June. I went in there months later because I needed to get something quick to eat, and the older man who worked there commented on the fact I was wearing a parka and asked if he could make me "hot". I stopped going. Then today, I had to grab something quick again, and reluctantly went to City Market, and the Greek wrap I got smelled rotten when I opened it and the wrap itself was soggy and gamey. read more

Pluses: they are a local independent grocer, they have some quality products (aside from the produce, fresh dairy, etc., which are pretty poor), including good hot and cold food to go, and they have a pretty extensive alcohol selection. Too many strikes against them to recommend for regular shopping, though, despite the convenience of location and hours. read more
