What a fun shopping experience. This store is huge. They offer a huge meat counter with amazing selections; lots already seasoned and ready to cook. The store was bustling with customers but the wait was minimal. The store was well stocked, clean, and inviting. I will come back when I have more time to browse. NY Strip whole loins were awesome looking at around $90 each, a great price for the size. Good selection of hot food served at fair prices. Decent breakfast burritos, warm tamales, nice selection of produce, big selection of Mexican candies and snacks and the best damn beefsteak tomato I've eaten in years. Unique bakery selections: strawberry empanadas, vibrant tres leches cakes, turtle shaped sweet breads, Mex-French inspired rolls, pancake breads, etc, all at great prices. Store was clean and festive. Built right into the neighborhood. At times, I felt like I was in another country. CONS: Out of jalapeno and cheese tamales. Busy store. Place was hopping. A bit of an odd layout with tight aisles. Crazy parking lot. Sorry but what's up with Latina's and their horrible parking skills? SUMMARY: Great store! If I lived closer I'd shop here daily. Purchased spoiled Lomo. When I called they told me to bring it in. I told them I live 20 miles away and don't know when I'll be able to because I don't drive. They agreed to credit my card which they never did. So I did. So months later they are still fighting it. I've been shopping there for over 40 years and now I will never set foot in that place. Prepare to doddle here. As someone visiting for the first time I should've allotted way more time to look around given the shear number of bodies in the aisles and at the meat counter. It was a little overwhelming. They have pretty much everything you'll need to pull together something wonderful and authentic but you'll need to explore the store to get a comprehensive lay of the land. I just don't understand why so few reviews as this is the oldest, largest Supermercado in SW D. Look at the menu of taco's and many foods made while you wait. See the signs of the whole hogs, lambs and the fish selection pictures. The always great old time friendly service along with the freshest meat at the best prices in town is well worth a visit. I've had many friends sign up on there site for a free once a month mailer that's loaded with super low price special and always a free bread or bacon just to get you in the door. I like to shop on Wednesdays as you get double points for all the great cooking items place around the store. This week I picked up a free lemon squeezer that was priced at $ 3.99. When in SW D this is a must try recession buster stop and you gotta try the Chicago style charizo @ only $ 2.19 per pound Wow what a great everyday price. See the pictures of the marinated meats, always a dozen types of chicken,beef and pork products to throw on the grill. This place is bodacious on a serious tip.. Love it. I love supermercados my first time in Cali, I stopped at Cardenas in the desert and was like what what? Why don't we have these types of places back home? So as soon as I got home started researching found this place as well as honeybees and a few other smaller places in the burbs. E&L was love at first visit. Not as cool as the Cali type of supermercados but I'll take it. The meat selection is great and they have a taqueria which is pretty sweet too. Offering tacos, rice, beans tamales etc.. There is good produce as well as an impressive selection of cheeses, salsas , and speciality items of the mexican variety very reasonable as well as a loyalty program and coupons via email. I wish there were more..like in my neighborhood I would gladly be their duchess. read more

E&L is the type of market that you find in Mexico when grocery shopping. Its big well stocked and has a huge staff of people running around taking care of every detail. Their produce section is a bit pricey but you can find things that you will need for essential Hispanic cooking. Don't forget to check out the cheese counter and also the meat counter which is the star of their show. I like this store because you earn points when you shop here. And FYI Mira, they also carry religious candles and florida water at good prices. In case you are doing a sacrifice for Santeria you can get everything from the tongue to the tail in the frozen meat cooler. yes it's specifically prepared so you can use it to take care of your spiritual business. IMHO, E&L is the best grocery store in the Livernois & Vernor area. I'm glad that they are open 7 days because that means I can always get one of their juicy delicious whole chickens which are cooked in the store. This place is delicioso. read more

E & L is an excellent grocery story. Notice that I didn't include "ethnic" in my description. Yes, it is cramped, busy, and somewhat chaotic, but I always find everything I need here -- and more. And even when the lines look long, they are fun and move quickly. E & L reminds me of an old school neighborhood grocery, and it seems to serve that function in southwest Detroit. In addition to offering all standard groceries, they have a super-sized full service butcher counter, bakery, hot take out, and excellent produce departments. They make homemade baked goods in both US and Mexican varieties. Most of them are showcased just to your right as you enter the store. If you don't pay attention and miss them, look over your right shoulder, and they should jump out at you. The bolillos (medium, puffy, white bread rolls) are always fresh, along with a wide variety of other bread and sweets. As you walk in on the left, you'll find fresh packed meat and fish. They carry a wide range of cuts and parts, tongue, heart, feet, ribs, along with all the traditional ones. If you can't find what you want, keep looking or ask. We have purchased smoked turkey legs and wings, chicken feet, chitlins .... While the packaged selection is excellent, up into the store to your right, the butcher counter is vision to behold. The array of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, etc. is broad. They have marinated meats, ready to take home to cook, and they will cut meat any way you like. Do you see a beautiful pork shoulder? They will cut it for curry, tacos, roasts .... If you keep walking along the glass of the butcher counter, you'll come to a deli-style counter. There are cold prepared foods, and you can order hot food for take out. Ask what tastes good. Watch to your right though, as there will often be people waiting in line well into some of the aisles. Between the butcher and deli counters and the dry grocery aisles, you'll find a couple of refrigerated cases for miscellaneous dairy products. They have a good selection of liquid yogurt, cheese, and the like. There is more cheese in the refrigerated section at the end of the deli. I am particularly fond of the Mexican farmer cheese that is repacked in house. It is salty and delicious, a perfect treat for the drive home. The far end of the store contains produce. In addition to standard offerings, their options for Caribbean and Latino fruits and vegetables are vast. There are always excellent avocados, plantains, and mangoes, but we've also found jicama, sugarcane, quince, papaya, breadfruit, and so many other treats. In one of the corners, you can usually find "stew packs" with carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, ready to throw in a pot. The aisles in the middle contain all standard groceries and an excellent selection of Mexican soda (Jarritos, Goya), candy, cookies, seasonings. They also carry a good selection of soap, cleaning products, and cookery. Whether you shop E & L like a regular or like an adventurer, it is a great place to pick up your essentials or find something new and interesting. Enjoy. read more

Every time I hunt down authentic hard to come by ingredients for filipino dishes, I come here. Their staff is very helpful and always delighted to serve. I buy all my nasty bits here,, from tripe, chitterlings, to pig ears,, they have it all in stock. It's not hard to find them either because their staff knows every nook and cranny of this store. I heard they have a taqueria station as well. It's not just the nasty bits they sell, their normal meats (as americans would call it) are also very good and priced very well. They even have ready made and marinated meats to take home for the semi home made cooks. Anyways, this place is amazing. I don't know what else to say about this place. I love walking into the middle of the baked goods sections. The prices were unbelievable and I bought a bunch of things, though I haven't tried them all yet. What I have tried is good, but not up to the level of a fresh bakery. I am saving the guava turnovers for last though and hoping to love them. Huge meat selection, though that doesn't interest me. They don't have the fancy products you see at Honey Bee but this place is less expensive. Produce selection is great. I was excited to see breadfruit. Overall a nice experience. read more

I love this supermarket, as it's a great place to find so many delicious items! I'm always sure to get the chicharrones by the deli...and the deli has so many meats, nice cuts, marinated, everything you could possibly want!! The prices are pretty reasonable and there's always lots of fresh produce to pick from and not picked over. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure not to miss the sweets corner which is pretty hard to miss since it's right by the entrance as you walk into the door greeted by sweet breads and cakes. E & L is easily the greatest deli and butcher in SW. Excellent cuts of high-grade beef and pork, fresh chicken, robust chorizo, sometimes goat. I love their thick cut porter house steaks, their chili-glazed chicken wings, and their richly colored ground beef, all for low prices that will astound you given how fresh and flavorful the meats are here. Don't ignore their really nice spread of top-quality luncheon meats as well, sliced any way you like. The service and speed behind the meat counter is impeccable and impressive. Some great prices on their bolillos (small bread rolls in the style of French bread - crusty surface, chewy innards), and also their tomatoes, and frozen hamburgers, all of which are excellent quality. And their prices on a 24-pack of bottle Mexican-import Coca-cola is the cheapest in the city... I stock up. Plenty of Jarritos sodas too, sold in cases, if that's your preference. Like La Colmena, they have an enormous selection of tortillas - at least a dozen different brands, some of which are brought into the store still warm from the delivery trucks, so that you can smell the fragrant lime that the tortillas are made with. The aisles are a little small. The produce can be hit or miss depending on what you need (I've always left with some of the best radishes and bell peppers). The dairy section is small. But those are the most minor of inconveniences. This supermercado is really worth your visit. Right on Vernor across from El Rancho restaurant, it's got a long parking lot out front, and the front entrance is usually lined with some specials (like charcoal or watermelon, in the summertime). read more

My bro-in-law, Matt P., pretty much summed it up when he said "buy everything". The Ben's Fajitas (raw, marinated, get at the meat counter) are fantastic, and better than any restaurant in Detroit. I always get those, house-made chips and salsa, and citrus there. Last week, one of the guys in the produce department showed me the proper way to cut a lime to yield the most juice. I first came here because I had some coupons for some incredible deals. Then, I came back, because they had some good specials as part of their weekly sale. Now, I do the bulk of all of my grocery shopping here. All of the employees and customers are super friendly, and the service is always great. There is a good selection of both North American and especially Latin American products, all at very good prices. There are some American staples that you can't find here (like berries, for example, but there are others as well), but that is more than made up for by the large number of items they have that you can't find at Kroger. Shopping here has definitely affected my diet. The highlight of the store is the meat department. Although I don't care for their deli meat, the butcher selection is the largest and best that I have seen - city or suburb - in terms of variety, availability, price and quality. They have things that I have not seen at any other store, and it is all of better quality than I have seen anywhere else. read more

It is a blessing and a curse to work down the street from E&L Supermercado. The blessing is being that I can walk down the street to get 3 quesadillas for $2.99. Which is a great deal! The curse being that I am tempted to get quesadillas or tacos from the prepared foods counter everday for lunch. If you call ahead to the kitchen your order will be ready when you walk in the door. It would be nice to have an online order placing system though since my co-workers and I spend a good amount of our time online. My co-workers and I have become such frequent visitors to E&L that one of the cashiers (Deanna) knows all of us by name and asks when a person is missing. read more

Love their weekly specials, especially on their seasoned meats. Probably one of the best and cheapest butcher shops in town. You can actually see the guys break down the product. You don't see that kind of thing in Meijer. The mango chicken, Ben's fajitas, and all of the other seasoned meats are just faboo. You'll find the cheapest pork ribs in town here -- undoubtedly one of the best places to go to if you are having a big BBQ. Fresh meats, cheap prices. Tell me when's the last time you saw pre-cut chicken breasticles for less than $6 a pound at meijer? Yeah, you can't. Chicken pieces average about $2.50-4 a pound -- depending on the sale that week. The produce is great if you are looking for things like plantains, bananas, limes, cactus. But if you are looking for apples you will get a sad looking apple. There's tons of little roundular kids running around being sticky, so you get pretty good at dodging them. And they close pretty early (around 7pm). The front parking lot is chaotic and littered with shopping carts so don't bring your Benz (my car got a little banged up from the lot last time I went). Overall, a solid market and my go to place for food... downside is the crappy hours. read more

This time, we ordered beef & chicken taco plates, beef & chicken super burritos. Everything was better than most restaurants, the burritos were huge and heavy, like 2.5 lbs each! The only downers were- the rice was too salty, and the frijoles were runny, like soup. Obviously watered down. Most of their groceries are more expensive than Meijers, but the sales items, spices, and meats are inexpensive. The raw beef fajita strips were super salty when we cooked them at home. read more

If you've read my other reviews, you know one thing about me. I love food and I have a body that shows i do. Since moving to the city proper I was afraid that I would be sentenced to using the market near where I live. Plain boring food. I don't do boring. Then I remembered my favorite part of Detroit ; the southwest side. The part that smells like Mexico. which is a Good thing. A short google search turned up E and L supermercado. I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to check it out for myself. Before I talk about the mercado, I must mention lunch. There was a truck; an ordinary step van. There was a line, and heavenly smells emanating from within. I got in line. I ordered a steak taco. I ate. I renounced Del Taco and Taco Bell on the spot. May God strike me dead if I ever THINK about entering those pseudo Mexican places ever in my lifetime. There was a guy behind me waiting on a burrito. I happened to be the guy who handed it to him. It weighed 3 pounds and looked like it could feed me for a week. All for 4.75. Next time, a burrito. Now on to E&L. Its not a big place, but big enough to have everything you need. The meat dept is right up front and yes, the prices on meat tend to be a tad high, it looked really fresh. I bought chorizo the mild stuff. Mild my eye. It was reallllly good. Then on to the hot sauce. Again, the mild stuff. Yeah, right. I bought some La Valentina made in Guadlahara. It could burn a hole in a manhole cover. Ok, maybe I exaggerate, but plenty hot for this gringo. I also was impressed by the selection of tortillas. At least 5 different brands. Should have bought more, In the end, I spent 13 bucks and walked out with a full backpack and bag. I was impressed enough to make this my primary source for food. I mean, Mexican food is the bomb and you might as well enjoy the ride. The store is neat as a pin, and one thing I must add. I lost my notebook in which I keep all my transit plans. I lost it while in the store. A quick email to the manager and yes it was found. I like that. I will be back again and again. Low prices may turn my head, but 3 pound burritos and good management mean something too. read more

"Livin La Comida Loca!" What a great little gem of a place. I couldn't be more thrilled today-having driven down on a lil' foodie adventure to check this place out. This place is every bit worth the drive and shopping experience, if you are in to Latin grocery markets, carnecerias, and food stalls...this is your place. I was transported back home to SoCal the moment the doors opened up. "AHHHHHhhhhh!" If you visit, make your way to the meat section at the far end of the counter- just past the marinated meat candy. ask for the taco special- ($1.50 per taco). I had 2 Carne Asada, and 1 chicken. Both are great. I think I liked the Asada a bit more. "Muy Sabroso!" If you like all things Mexicano, and are tired of knock off greasy "below average" tacos places in Detroit...then give this place a shot. Make sure to bring extra napkins with you, so you can endulge in a little parking lot dinning in the front seat of your auto. "Bòn Apetit-O" P.S ....
