Because of the size and relatively quietness, new firefighters are assigned here to spend about 5 months doing hands-on training, going on real calls and doing actual work at a slower pace before rotating out to other busier stations. Firefighter Jeff was quite friendly, inviting us in after their tiller truck had backed into the garage. We took the opportunity to take a look around and admire how organized and clean everything is. Each tool in the toolbox has its own indentation on the foam so that it stays in place and looks extremely organized. That's such a smart idea that I might copy for my kitchen drawer full of loose gadgets. During the tour, the station received a call that required paramedics and a fire engine, so Firefighter Jeff had to hurry out. We witnessed the sense of urgency in the station but it was a calm and collected rush. It was interesting to see the firefighters jump into their gear and GTFO of there. The alarm was of a low buzz/whoop and the announcement over the PA system was very matter-of-fact relay of information. I suppose if the alarm was shrilly like on TV or the movies and if the lady over the PA system shrieked like Kevin McCallister's mom every time, it would get old fast. We loitered around for a few minutes out back - saw their tool shed from the outside and saw that they had their gas pump. This is a single-level fire station so no fire poles here. We saw other firefighters during the frenzy but they went back inside after the trucks left. We didn't want to be weird and stick around unaccompanied and also there wasn't much else to see anyway. I don't recommend making a trip here to visit since firefighters need their rest, but if you happen to be walking by and a firefighter seem like they are willing to spend their downtime talking to you, then by all means, say hello

The overnight management for my apartment that I have just moved into told me to call the fire department. So I didn't want to, but I did because I wanted to sleep too and figure out if something was going on. So I called them and they showed up in three of them walked in and it was like two young people a guy and a girl and then an older man and the older man was really nice, but the chick was so standoffish and they young guy just was annoyed. Which I get bc it was early and it was my first time calling the fire department. Then they told me to never call the fire department again for something like this. Then a couple of months later, one of my roommates left a candle it and the fire alarms are going off for an hour. And I didn't react because the fire department told me not to call for something like that again. Well after an hour, I start smelling smoke and we have to call the fire department. Like I literally held off on calling because of how bad these firemen and fire lady hurt my feelings a few months earlier. Anyways they came for that too which I had already put the fire out! (Little fire lady myself) but they aired it out with a big fan. So yeah just be nice because chances are the person doesn't wanna have to call you it's just I don't know Jack about fire prevention or any of that jazz. You don't know the impression you're leaving on your community and how it can affect your community after that.

While they always say the public is welcome to visit the station, it is best for any grown-ass adult to bring a kid - your own or borrowed. Get paid triple-overtime when visiting on a Saturday with one of my favorite kids to babysit? Score!! LAFD Station 13 is extra special to me now. Not only is it literally down the street from Dino's Chicken and Burgers (Dino's Fries is all I need), but they have an Asian Captain (Represent!). And I got the most interesting fire station tour. All the fire trucks/engines were out on call so I got to see the KITCHEN and the LAUNDRY room. This is exactly the stuff I want to see but usually never. The kid saw a bunch of firefighters so he was skipping-back-to-the-car happy too. The crew at Fire station 13 was extremely welcoming. I don't recommend anyone/everyone walking up and taking time away from firefighters doing their work. I just happen to be in the area, and having a kid who makes the best puppy eyes, and had already paid the meter for an hour across the street. The chief happened to walk across the empty station and saw us wave. He waved back and could have kept walking inside but he opened the garage doors. Being oblivious to his apology that the station is empty (e.g. let him walk back to his office), we (mostly I) asked if we could check out the very cool-looking vintage truck out back. The chief was extremely kind and said yes and we ended up taking up an hour of his and his 9-person crew's time. Not only did we get to spend time on the vintage truck, the kid got 2 helmets (damn greedy kid), and got the best tour I have ever had. Saw all the rooms in the fire station (Turnout is where the gear for firefighters who were not working that day is stored; the fitness room; conference room; chiefs' offices; the fax machine that prints the calls that are dispatched to the station; the pole; and the commercial kitchen with 3 refrigerators). I am a behind-the-scenes person and this is the stuff I am interested in. By the way, I am posting photos from the tour so that others don't need to see it in person - it's nothing special but this is the stuff I like. The kid got to see a fire truck come back to the station AND a truck taking off to respond to a call broadcasted at the station (the red phone and white phone ringing and all) as well as firefighters hustling. That was cool, even for me. Firefighters talked to him, gave him a juice packet, offered him a hotdog, which he gobbled happily in the car and between bites wouldn't stop talking about the experience. The Asian captain even offered to put bulgogi on the hotdog. Love it! I wasn't expecting much when I waved in front of the garage door but turned out to be the best fire station experience yet. I won't show my face again because I don't want to waste their time again but am definitely grateful for the comprehensive tour and service that they provide to the Pico-Union area.

We have a low lying spot by our garage that only floods in torrential down pour. So I'm preparing ! The two firemen that answered the bell were very friendly. (Probably a little surprised someone was actually visiting their location. ) I asked about the sandbags (as I've heard they give free sandbags out at fire stations) and they said they have the bags but no sand at this location. They gave me locations of departments that did have sand and even showed me the locations on the map. So I got my sandbags (FREE) and I'll be stopping by the next station for the sand. There's really no reason to not be prepared! Stop by your local station (or call in advanced) and give these amazing men and women who protect us, a smile and a thank you.... while picking up your free sandbags. I've lived in this area all my life and I have never been inside the firehouse. I'm glad I got to stop in, in a non emergency situation and visit. A+

I had an appointment to see Doctor specialist that morning. Later at 7:00am I was in extreme pain and needed the ER. 6:30 is shift change. They sent 2 baby firefighters. Not EMTs. A young girl, smallish and a 23 y.o. guy, also not too big, not yet an EMT. I couldnt walk and was in screaming pain. These 2 raw untrained firemen were overwelled. Barely carried me down a few stairs, and put me on a guerny to hospital ER. They were untrained, unprepared and acted like I was bothering them. I don't know what crew they were. Shocking that the Captain sent out 2 small unqualified, unprepared, probationary "Firefighters" on a medical emergency.

LAFD Fire Station 58 is located on a slight bend on south Robertson, south of the Beverly Hills city limits, where traffic can get quite fast if the light is green. It's near the Robertson library and not far from where I work. So when I got a repeat side gig to watch a kid nearby for a couple of hours one early evening, I thought of the fine firefighters down the street, a slurpee at 7-Eleven across the street and the rest of the time at the library for a great time. 9 times out of 10 when I drive by, Station 58's garage door is closed but unlucky for them, they left their garage door open. Aside from hearing the sirens so much that I've kind of tuned them out altogether, I learned that this is a very active fire station not only because of the area of land they cover but also because central Dispatch would send their units all over the city. While we were there, an ambulance had to do a tandem shuffle and then go to LAX in rush hour traffic. Size-wise, it is nowhere as big as Beverly Hills' Headquarters but comparable to some of the LA fire stations from Brentwood to Koreatown that I have seen. Personnel-wise, here they have a female firefighter! And she is Asian! Doubly rare... and she was pretty cool. I learned that most firefighters will opt to use the stairs at this station if it's not a super duper urgent call because the landing from sliding down the pole hurts their knees and feet. I wonder why they don't install better padding at the bottom? Anyway, it was a short visit because EVERYONE got called out. At the end, it was me and the boy all alone in an empty fire station garage, so we walked ourselves out. Anyway, the year is almost over so make a donation to firefighters and write it off on your taxes!

Instead of simply explaining whether sandbags were available or where residents could get them, I was met with a lot of attitude and the phone was hung up on me twice. I understand if the station doesn't provide sandbags or if there are certain rules or limited supplies. That's completely understandable. What I don't understand is why a resident asking a simple question couldn't be treated with basic courtesy and directed to the proper location. Our local fire stations are an important part of the community, and I expected a much more professional and helpful response. It's not like these sandbags are coming out of Captain Jackson's personal budget or paycheck. They're community emergency resources meant to help residents prepare and protect their property. If they're unavailable or there are restrictions, just explain that. There's no reason for the attitude or to hang up on someone simply asking for information.
