Lahela's 34' Radon sport fisher
Ted H.

We found this charter through the "blue book", The Ultimate Guide to Kauai - which is part of the "Hawaii Revealed" series by Wizard Publications. But even as they say, you need to experience a vendor/restaurant a couple of times before you can pass judgment on them. So here's our onetime experience: Getting Captain Scott to talk, or just emote, in anyway is far greater challenge than hitting the mother lode of big eye tuna. This trip was scheduled mid-September, which I guess is a slow time for him. I didn't know until the night before if our trip was a 4 hour or 6 hour charter. He charged $219/pp, but sets the time based on the number of anglers. Luckily we had a total of 4, so we made it to the 6 hour tier. We headed down from our hotel up in Princeville (north shore) at about 440a due to some lane construction and all the speed traps, as well as the expected traffic later in the AM. Surprisingly, we got to the dock at about 530a, met Captain Scott as he was coming up from the boat. First impression was that he's a real standoffish guy. I was told to go sit in my car since the charter didn't leave until 6am...30 minutes, really Scott?! About 10 minutes after that I guess he decided he'd better come get our money before we could bail. He invited us down to the boat to get settled in. Now, it's important to note that this would have been a horrible trip if it were not for the antics of Capt. Scott's deckhand, and color commentator, Howard. Howard is the life of Capt. Scott's boat; without his antics and personality I would most likely be giving Lahela 2 stars or less. Howard is hilarious, talks with everyone, is attentive to your needs and doesn't talk down to anyone, regardless of their skill. Lahela is definitely a boat that comes equipped for the fish; 400lb test line, a plethora of lures, six rail mounted poles and a couple of outriggers. Captain Scott didn't say much (strike that - he doesn't say anything) for the 6 hours we were on the water. Howard would run up and down to the fly bridge doing whatever tasks that needed doing. He was fast on the change-ups and always had at least one line in the water for each side of the boat. We trolled heavy lines, jigged light tackle and even threw a skippy on a harness for some top and weighted outrigger trolling. We landed a total of 4 skipjack, lost 5 and had a heavy lure and 400lb line shredded by a wahoo. Seas, as the say, were below normal - but being from Southern California were pretty high with 3-6 foot swells. I can't say that Captain Scott's heart was in our charter, but Howard's back was always into the work; with a smile and "unverified" bits of information. Perhaps Captain Scoot is just super laid back, or perhaps he just doesn't care. I wasn't able to figure him out, and have since stopped trying. Would I charter Lahela again? I think I'd have to try another charter service, like Kai Bear, to have a standard to measure him by. I do know that if Howard wasn't with Scott, I definitely wouldn't suggest him to a friend. Deep down I don't feel we got value for the money spent, but then again maybe I had higher expectations for a Hawaiian deep sea fishing trip. At least they don't have sea lions chasing the boats and eating your fish as you reel them in. But, that's fishing, and you can't always hold the captain responsible. To paraphrase Howard, 'fishing is like baseball - you can have a late inning rally, and sometimes you just get to play.'

Booked a shared charter for a 4 hour trip. Had a great trip and everyone caught a fish. I would definitely book another trip with them.

Captain Max was incredible--his sense of humor kept us laughing even as the rain and mist rolled in. The two women on the crew (I wish I could remember their names) were fantastic, making sure everyone was comfortable and answering all our questions with a smile. The playlist on board was spot on, setting the perfect vibe. I wish I could find it on Spotify! Despite the weather, the views were breathtaking, and getting a little drenched just added to the adventure. The food was delicious, especially the smoked pork, salad, and fresh fruit, and my husband loved the mai tais. Even without the sunset, the whole experience was magical. After chatting with other travelers, I'm convinced we had one of the best tours available. especially after talking to a couple at our hotel pool who had paid more than we did and only got snacks limited alcohol. I can't recommend Holo Holo Charters enough, and I'm already looking forward to trying their breakfast or snorkel cruise next time. If you're looking for an amazing adventure, this is it!

Price was $250 per person and we booked a couple days before the tour date. (we went at the end of March - the weather was fantastic and not too hot, also not raining). Although it was pricey, I felt like it was worth the experience and highly recommend anyone do a tour, even if it's not with this company. We got back to shore around 7-7:30pm, so total time was 5 hours ish. Pros: - the Na Pali coast is BEAUTIFUL - the views were truly a once in a life time experience for me and I saw the fullest rainbow I've ever seen - The tour guide was super informative, we learned a lot about whales, and they also taught us a lot about certain mountains and waterfalls that we passed on the Na Pali Coast (like where Kauai kings were buried). - We stopped to watch whales multiple times and it was really cool! - The 3 staff working on board the ship were extremely helpful in answering questions, providing drinks, and instructing people from a safety perspective - Safety - I felt very well taken care of the whole time. It's a barefoot cruise but people can choose to keep their shoes on if they want. They provided bags for people feeling nauseous and gave good advice when people were feeling seasick. - Food provided - it's not fine dining or anything (chicken teriyaki, salad, etc) but it does beat having to pack your own food or go hungry around dinner time. Also unlimited alcohol or nonalcoholic drinks. - The staff helped us take photos and there's a lot of great photo opportunities at the coast - Champagne toast at sunset, which was beautiful to watch out on the water - bathrooms available on board - My husband didn't feel like eating on board due to the motion sickness so they were kind enough to pack a to-go box for us! - Parking was easy and the meet up location was easy to find - we stood outside for most of the ride since it felt better than sitting inside, so we did get a bunch of sea-spray and got super wet from the 10 ft swells, but it felt really fun! Cons: - I think they need to put a huge disclaimer with statistics or something to show people how common it is for people to get seasick and vomit. I think maybe 5 people from our whole boat got really sick and either fell or vomited during the trip (can feel a little weird enjoying the beautiful view while someone smells like vomit next to you lol). They do tell you at the beginning that you can walk away and get a full refund after hearing the captain briefing during the meet up starting spot, but I don't think they really emphasize just how many people get sick. I personally felt fine but I felt really bad for people who had to gut through the five hour round trip feeling terrible. bring Dramamine!! This was definitely a highlight of my first time in Kauai, I wouldn't necessarily do it more than once due to the price, but it was a fantastic experience for the views!

Their hospitality was beyond exceptional--truly 200%! Not only did they make sure everyone was safe and comfortable throughout the trip, but they also took the time to get to know each of us personally and captured wonderful photos so we could simply enjoy the moment. We've been on many boat tours throughout Hawaii, including Kauai, but this experience was far beyond our expectations. The vessel felt brand new, the restrooms were spotless, and every detail reflected the pride they take in delivering an exceptional experience. The food was delicious and beautifully served on real glass plates with silverware--not paper plates and plastic utensils. It truly felt like a luxury adventure from start to finish. Between the breathtaking scenery, incredible snorkeling, outstanding service, and genuine aloha spirit, this was an unforgettable day. Mahalo to Captain Greg, Lauren, and the entire crew for creating memories we'll cherish forever. If you're visiting Kauai, I highly recommend this tour. You won't be disappointed!

From the second we got on the boat, they made everyone feel welcome and were so friendly, funny, and accommodating. They took the time to engage with everyone on board, which made the whole experience feel really personal. Capt. Kealoha did an incredible job sharing the history of the Nā Pali Coast, pointing out famous movie filming locations, and explaining the history of different landmarks along the way. It made the trip so much more than just a beautiful boat ride, it felt like we were getting a personal tour of one of the most stunning places in Hawaii. When it was time to snorkel, the crew made sure everyone felt comfortable and informed before getting in the water. They even jumped in with us, which made the experience even more fun and reassuring. The two kids in our group had an absolute blast and haven't stopped talking about it! The views were unreal, the crew made the entire day so much fun, and we left talking about how glad we were that we booked with Blue Dolphin Charters. If you're visiting Kauai and thinking about doing a Nā Pali Coast tour, this is the one. I would recommend them over and over again!

They responded quickly months prior while we were still doing research for our trip. Captain Cole Jarrett and Lily ran a solid experience. Clear instructions from the beginning, information during, and stories intertwines as we traveled along the coast. We also had some waves while dodging dark clouds. We were able to squeeze ahead of it tho with a little bit of water tho still warm really. It was a bit bumpy when we had to get ahead of the storm but that's understandable. During the trip around we saw a few whales and beautiful views of the Napali coast. There was also a small dolphin and plenty of flying fish skipping across the water. Dinner included had pulled pork and teriyaki chicken. I also had a vegetarian meal which was great. It was their own mix over rice. Flavors were good tho a little dry. A gravy would've melded things but otherwise still a good mix. The food was onboard and drinks were great. Lily was running around delivering drinks and snacks. We got many drinks and cookies over the course of the cruise. It was a great experience overall, would certainly recommend.

We didn't catch anything, and that would be excusible if there were no fish to be had, but it didn't seem to affect the crew whether we were catching or not. We neither changed bait or tactics that I could tell - just blasted through the water with the lures hanging back there. Before leaving the captain explained our plan was to try to find birds and other fish-feeding indicators, that the weather was too calm for good fishing. That was the last we heard of him until we got back and he announced that we had a "slow day at the office." All-in-all, it just seemed like they were just going through the motions. Regarding the state of water - After we got out of the harbor, the sea didn't seem that calm to me. We had to struggle to stay on our feet. The first mate was rude to me when he repeatedly barked at me to "listen" to his instructions for reeling in fish. I may not be the best listener-especially at 6am, but I would expect a little patience for the $150+/head. My daughter, who arguably could have been the best swimmer on the boat, was required to wear a life vest because, they explained, people younger than thirteen are legally required to wear a life vest. She will be thirteen in a few months, and is almost adult-size. The life vest they gave her to wear was way too big for her to the extent it looked unsafe. As a result, she was uncomfortable the whole time. If they are required to put life vests on pre-teens, why wouldn't they have an appropriate size? When we got back, they explained that June is a much better time for fishing. News to us. Would I have written this if we had a monster catch? Probably not. Could the crew have done a better job with what they could control? Definitely.
