What a great day on the water! I contacted Captain J by email the day before to see what the odds were we could snag a last minute half-day private trip. Within less than an hour we had the trip booked. We met him at the harbor in Port Allen at about 0600. We went over the procedures and got underway by 0630. We spent the next four hours soaking up great weather and learning how to fish the big water effectively. Although we didn't have a banner day of catching, we sure enjoyed our 4-4.5 hours on the water and both getting to fight a couple fish. Both Captain J and his deckhand (Bronson) worked their asses off to get us on fish and make the day as fun as possible. Highly recommend, and tip these guys well. They deserve it!

It's called deep sea fishing, not deep sea catching. If you go into it thinking you're paying for the chance to catch a fish, you'll be golden. We went out with Captain Brad and Mahi Mark. Both young guys by obviously passionate about their sport. Capt. Brad was focused and relentless at the helm of the boat. He guided us through 4-5 foot surf and served as a look out when a line went tight. Mahi Mark chatted and got to know us while we trolled through the water. He shared Hawaiian traditions with us and offered a list of things to do while on our trip. At the end of the day, we caught two fish: an unseasonal Mahi Mahi and a tuna. But the thing that stood out most to me was that they filleted the fish for us then shared the rest with another boat that came in that hadn't caught anything.

Great time with Capt. Jeff. I fish a lot and have run my own boat in California so I have experience to give the following review. The boat (Big Ta Do) is in great shape, fast and clean. The tackle is top shelf gear. We fished a 6 hour trip and we scored a nice Ono and a beast 200 lb yellowfin. The fish was very tough and gave us all we could handle but Jeff is a pro and his deck hand (Capt Randy) was very good and they worked well together. Weather was "sporty" as Jeff put it but there is a lot of wind in Kauai so don't expect lake placid. What I liked is Jeff was up front about the seas and what to expect and gave us the choice of where to go. I recommend always to defer to good Captains as they are the local knowledge. This trip is a perfect example of that as many other boats struck out but we scored big! Mahalo to Capt. Jeff.

Wonderful day out fishing with Captain Mark and Saxon. They we both very welcoming and knowledgeable about the island and fishing. Saxon spotted a bird pile which turned out to bring in two Mahi Mahi. We were even able to see a whale breaching off the boat.

All smiles with our bounty at the end of the day. Thank you captain Jeff and deckhand Brandon!!

It started slow and we were accepting getting skunked, but it was still a beautiful boat ride out to the fishing grounds from Nawiliwili Harbor. Then came the first hit, a huge mahi mahi (dorado) that snarled all the lines, but it was brought on board safely. and lines were quickly put back in the water. Then another mahi, then a decent sized ono (wahoo), then a 30 lb. mahi. All of it was exciting as hell, especially for six novices. Captain Jeff made sure everyone had a turn reeling in the fish and we were all smiles. Then the big one hit. Something took one of the lines and fortunately, the strongest guy had the rod because it took a while to discover that a huge tuna was hooked. From one side of the boat to the other, several times, it took four of us guys to get the tuna on board! It was a happy trip back to the harbor and Captain Jeff cleaned one of the mahi to split up. We took four huge portions back to the room for some outstanding dinners. Delicious. It was the highlight of our week on Kauai and I highly recommend Captain Jeff and Island Kaui Fishing. We'll be back for sure.

I have to say it was a major disappointment on many levels. Three of the four of us are experienced in offshore fishing, having done many trips in Southern California up and down the coast. We understand there is no guarantee of catching fish, but, we do expect to have a good experience based on comfort and services. The comfort and service were lacking, I seriously suggest finding a different charter in Kauai if you want an overall good experience. I think Captain Jeff was likely a great deckhand at one point who decided to buy the cheapest (e,g, very bad shape) boat he could find and start a fishing business. He provided a decent intro/over view for the trip which emphasized safety, but, his reference to the life jackets "in the storage area" was simply, "you know, there's a few buckles and straps, not a big deal", was somewhat alarming for me, and, he didn't take one out to even show us how to use it, nor did he even reference "what to do" in the event we had to go in the water for a fire, etc. Safety is not a joke when on the open water and if something goes wrong, panic may ensue, the boat Captain has to ensure we know what to do and how to do it. The safety overview and preparation was severely lacking and of great concern. Captain Jeff's boat appears to be in poor condition, he asked us to remove shoes (with rubber soles for grip!) and fish barefoot to avoid damaging his peeling deck surface as well as slipping, well for me that was an issue because I didn't want to leave with severely sunburned feet, and, I prefer having shoes on. It wasn't really an option, he made it clear that he wanted no shoes on. Also, from a hygiene perspective, is he aware of how many foot problems can be transferred, athletes foot, etc? Again, made me very uncomfortable. Who was walking on that deck the day before, and the day before that, etc, etc. Seating on his boat is terrible, there's barely enough room for 4 on the infrastructure bench, all steel bench and seat backs, no padding, how expensive would 4 seat cushions and back cushions be Jeff? The other option is to sit on the steel engine cover lid, there is very little to no shade available to get out of the sun. Jeff did offer one inside seat to us to get out of the rain, but that's it, no room for anyone else. Jeff, your boat is extremely uncomfortable, but you don't seem to care. but I noticed you had a nice cushioned captains chair to drive the boat from. Lucky you, your back probably doesn't hurt as much as mine does today. We were told when our trip was booked that there would be drinks and snacks provided on the trip (again, 6 hours on the water), well there drinks but no snacks, NOTHING to eat unless we brought it ourselves, we were all very hungry at the end of the trip, again, a complete LACK of service (how much would 4 pre-made sandwiches and some chips have cost you Jeff? Maybe $20?? The final blow for me was when 2 of Jeff's troll lines were bit off he lost the set-ups obviously and was visibly upset about it, explaining the detailed cost of each component (hook, feather jig, etc) and that each was $60 and that "now it's gone, not here anymore to use", as if it was our fault for not jumping on the reel at hook up to keep tension on the fish. He never told us to set the hook, he was doing all the "fishing" and once hooked would put us on the reel to crank away. It's like taking your car to a mechanic for an oil change, they loosen the oil pan plug to drain the oil, the wrench breaks in the process and then he wants to charge you for the wrench. Seriously? And, on top of it, he didn't have a good supply of fishing jigs and feathers, we saw what he had in the storage area on the boat, I can tell you I have more jigs in my tackle box at home than this guy had, so disappointed when I saw this. He really has a bare bones operation, a piece of crap boat, and his customer service / communication skill is that of a Santa Barbara deckhand -turned boat captain. Jeff, you can refute this posting all you want, I'll be happy to provide additional info that I have spared here. I really believe the only positive reviews seen here are from people who were lucky enough to have hooked into some really nice dorado or tuna and therefore their trip was "awesome", "best ever". We had one Ono and one Skipjack come on board, and, Jeff was pretty hard over on keeping the Ono for himself "in lieu of a tip for him" and to "help make up for the lost gear". So sad, we were really looking forward to this island fishing experience, we'll find a different boat next time. Final point, Jeff has an interesting personality, at times very aloof and non-communicative, borderline rude for paying customers, did not answer 3 of my 4 direct questions on the fishing or fish, very perplexed by that. Very disappointed. Thanks.

All i brought with me were my swim fins and an extra bicep leash I had. I was looking for a legit bodyboard rental and the shops I had been to and/or the beach side rental shacks had boards that just werent up to par. I was down the road at Tamba buying tees and the guy there (thankfully) referred me to Kapaa Beach Shop when I asked if he knew of any places that had quality bodyboard rentals. He told me Mike at KBS rented Mike Stewart Science Bodyboards.... The look of shock on my face was probably photo worthy. I couldnt believe the type of place I had been looking for was just down the road. It was already my 2nd time in Kapaa by that point. Kapaa Beach Shop is on your right side along Kuhio Highway if you are coming from the Lihue area. It's right after Chicken in a Barrel BBQ. It has about 4 dedicated spaces out front in its gravel driveway. They rent everything from beach umbrellas, chairs, bicycles, diving and snorkeling gear... You name it. You need it for the beach, he has it. It was jamming with customers the both times I went there but Mike was gracious and helpful with all of us. I was able to rent a hybrid Mike Stewart Science bodyboard which I used at a few beaches on the island. It was great. Thick board with lots of float to it, making catching waves easier. It also came with a Gyroll bicep leash... It was like a setup I would gladly have every day back home. I'm thankful to Mike for the Aloha and just being super cool in providing a quality rental. We chatted it up a bit and you can tell he is legit and really knows his stuff. I HIGHLY recommend you go see Mike at Kapaa Beach Shop for all your beach rental needs. He is the man. Mahalos Mike! Shout out to Chaos the shop dog at KBS. Chee!
