Came out here for the 4 hour deep sea fishing tour while on vacation on Kauai island. We were paired with 4 other people on this boat, 2 crew members and one captain. There was ample space for all of us on this boat with comfortable cushions to sit on inside and outside of the boat. We were able to catch 2 large yellowfin tuna. One person caught a 110, and we caught a 140 lb tuna. There was plenty of fish to go around and the crew cleaned and cut the fish for all of us to take home. Me and my boyfriend were able to take home several loins and otoro the fatty part of the tuna. I can't speak for everyone else but me and my boyfriend enjoyed ourselves and would consider doing this tour again if we come back again. If you're looking for an awesome deep sea fishing experience in Kauai, this is the place. I went out fishing with Abraham and Cappella, both long time Kauai locals, and couldn't have asked for a better time. They are so knowledge in the space and I felt great with them leading us. They did so many different fishing techniques, from trolling to catching and using live bait, to ensure that we caught some fish. Even if we didn't, they would have sent us home with some of the previous day's catch. Overall a great experience and I'd for sure pick them again. read more

What a great day on the water! I contacted Captain J by email the day before to see what the odds were we could snag a last minute half-day private trip. Within less than an hour we had the trip booked. We met him at the harbor in Port Allen at about 0600. We went over the procedures and got underway by 0630. We spent the next four hours soaking up great weather and learning how to fish the big water effectively. Although we didn't have a banner day of catching, we sure enjoyed our 4-4.5 hours on the water and both getting to fight a couple fish. Both Captain J and his deckhand (Bronson) worked their asses off to get us on fish and make the day as fun as possible. Highly recommend, and tip these guys well. They deserve it! read more

Captain J is a true gentleman. In the middle of everything going on - he took me, my wife and and kids out for a fishing adventure that started with a beautiful tour of the Kauai coast, and ended with a 180lb yellowfin tuna on board. It's called deep sea fishing, not deep sea catching. If you go into it thinking you're paying for the chance to catch a fish, you'll be golden. We went out with Captain Brad and Mahi Mark. Both young guys by obviously passionate about their sport. Capt. Brad was focused and relentless at the helm of the boat. He guided us through 4-5 foot surf and served as a look out when a line went tight. Mahi Mark chatted and got to know us while we trolled through the water. He shared Hawaiian traditions with us and offered a list of things to do while on our trip. At the end of the day, we caught two fish: an unseasonal Mahi Mahi and a tuna. But the thing that stood out most to me was that they filleted the fish for us then shared the rest with another boat that came in that hadn't caught anything. read more

Great time with Capt. Jeff. I fish a lot and have run my own boat in California so I have experience to give the following review. The boat (Big Ta Do) is in great shape, fast and clean. The tackle is top shelf gear. We fished a 6 hour trip and we scored a nice Ono and a beast 200 lb yellowfin. The fish was very tough and gave us all we could handle but Jeff is a pro and his deck hand (Capt Randy) was very good and they worked well together. Weather was "sporty" as Jeff put it but there is a lot of wind in Kauai so don't expect lake placid. What I liked is Jeff was up front about the seas and what to expect and gave us the choice of where to go. I recommend always to defer to good Captains as they are the local knowledge. So let me start off by saying this, we caught no fish but that's not the reason I'm giving only three stars. The crew was very pleasant and knowledgable. I gave three stars because of the type of fishing we did. If your a novice or never really been deep sea fishing before you'll have a blast. If your an experienced angler you'll be bored, save your money and don't go. The day consists of nothing but trolling, no touch gear. Your rod sits in the rod holder and you wind the reel if a fish is caught, no stand up fishing. Gear is old school meaning, great big Tiagra 80's with yards of #200lb mono. no smaller more efficient rods and reels packed with spectra and a tops shot like we do in So-Cal and Baja. They really should invest in a few smaller rods and reels and fish the Jacks inside the reef when fishing is slow instead of taking everyone on an 8 hour boat ride. Once again crew and Capt were great, boat was good, just really not my style of fishing. Still tipped out the crew at the end of it because they tried their hardest to find fish. read more

This review is long overdue...but to the readers out there...if you have any questions who to fish with....let me answer that now. Deep Sea Fishing Kauai is by far the best charter I have ever fished with. I have fished with tons of other charters from Hawaii to Mexico and the west coast of California. I expected the same experience, but these guys are by far the best. Captain J and I had several phone calls prior to my trip to Kauai to coordinate dates and what we wanted to catch. On day one, we fished with Captain Rob and Jeff Campbell. They took care of us at every turn, making sure we not only enjoyed the trip and caught fish, but also that we didn't get sunburnt and had enough water. Jeff spent a long time explaining his tips and tricks to put fish on the boat and I think even gave away a few secrets of fishing Kauai. The weather cooperated and was a great day....so we booked again later in the week. Midweek, we fished with Captain Rob again and Brandon and put some smaller sized tuna on the boat and again the weather cooperated. It was a short trip with 4 other anglers us, but we all had a great day. I won't say that everyone got to catch, but we (my dad and I) did....and it certainly wasn't for lack of trying on their part. I am sure the other anglers wanted to catch...but that's fishing. Finally, late in the week, I saw Deep Sea Fishing Kauai's facebook post that showed they were into the big tuna. I called Jeff Campbell and he scrambled to put a charter together for the next morning. He coordinated everything and the next morning we left VERY early. The weather held and Captain Andy put us on the fish. Not very many charters caught that day....but we did. What we caught was a lifetime fish...and that Ahi was over #200. My dad described the day as one of the best in his life...being able to fish with his son and catch like we did. All in all, I can not thank these guys enough. We had an amazing trip and consider them all our new friends. They certainly shared a pretty special day with my father and me. A special thanks goes to Jeff who took care of us all week and even dropped off some fresh Ono which a different mid week charter caught. I had talked about wanting to catch and BBQ...so he brought it to us. That is going well beyond the extra mile. I'll fish with them every time I am in Kauai. I was looking very forward to taking my boy deep sea fishing for our very first time. After scheduling our tour I was informed that there is a 72 hour cancellation policy and that if I cancelled that I would still have to pay the full amount. Well I wish I had my own cancellation policy because last night just a couple hours before going to bed Deep Sea Kauai cancelled on me . I wish I had made plans with another company and encourage you to do the same . This was not at all a weather issue but a lack of being prepared on their part. They said that the boat just wasn't ready and needed maintenance. Needless to say I'm very very disappointed . When you schedule a tour like this and are willing to open your wallet this big you should be treated with great respect and professionalism. If you're looking for someone to serve you cocktails and caviar while someone else reels your fish in for you, this is not the boat for you. However, if you'd like to actually fish and be around fishermen and participate in the fishing then these guys are awesome! We went out with Captain Bill and Deckhand Josh. We didn't get into the fish too much but it wasn't for lack of trying. We were out on their second boat and it seated 5 of us plus 2 crewmen quite comfortably. Do I wish we would have caught more fish? Of course, but the worst day fishing is still better than the best day working! Especially with these guys. read more

Jude & Josh did the job! We went out to a sea buoy 5 miles out (since disappeared). Not everyone caught a fish, but the fish were not biting. And Jude was trying! But that is fishing! Still we caught enough, that everyone had plenty of to take home! While I think the restaurant sales of whole fish (required by law), may have been disappointing that day, it was accepted as, "That's fishing"! I wish I could butcher a fish as efficiently as they do. I know I can, I just need the training & experience. I am going out with these men again. We had a great experience even though it was a bit shorter then we wanted (some of us got the motion sickness and we had to return early). Captain and his crew are working their tails off in order to find us a fish and less than two hours we caught about 9 tunas and one mahi-mahi. read more

This is commercial fishing disguised as sportfishing. BE AWARE, if you catch any marketable fish, you will get NONE of it. Essentially, you are subsidizing a commercial fishing outfit with your fee. Sure you get to reel in a fish if one is hooked, and you get a boat ride, that is the extent of it. Unless a fish is caught that they can't sell (and would otherwise be thrown back), you may keep it. I reeled in a large Yellowfin tuna and expected to take some home to the family, but on the dock after the trip I was told that saleable fish belong to the boat, "It is stated on the website". I never consulted the website, and it is not stated on the brochure nor did Captain J mention it any of the three times I spoke with him. Avoid this outfit, let them pay for their own gas. read more

My family and I (group of 5) went out on one of their boats with Captain Rob and Deckhand Jeff for a 6-hour trip. What a success! We do fish a lot on the mainland and understand that we might not have caught anything, but to be on a boat in beautiful Kauai... that's a memory we will never forgot! We got lucky, though! We caught 3 Mahi Mathis and one Wahoo. We did catch some small yellow fin, but you gotta throw those guys back so they get big later. We caught the Wahoo quickly on our trip, followed by quiet, and finished with a bang when the captain spotted a large log. The lines wouldn't stop, and it was crazy! What fun, though! The crew was very knowledgeable about fishing in the area, and Jeff kept us informed as to the plan throughout the trip so we stayed informed. The crew was friendly and definitely knew what they were doing. If you're planning a trip to Kauai and enjoy fishing, you've gotta fish with these guys! Pretty fun trip. We caught 3 tuna and a barracuda but one tuna got ate by a shark in the way in. The deck hand named Nate was super cool and he has a kayak fishing tour as well. I didn't have the time to go on that but I'm sure it's great if he is guiding. Words really can not do our experience justice. Captain J and Captain Randy who worked as a deck hand on our trip were amazing! The most important thing is to have realistic expectations, you could catch tons of fish or not get a bite.... but I'll assure you this, if the fish are there Captain J is gonna make sure they are on the deck! And for us Randy and J made that happen!!! We caught Mahi Mahi and skip jack and let me tell you the fights of these fish were crazy!! It was such a high and SOOO MUCH FUN! When hear hear that real start to scream! Oh MAN!!! Randy literally never stopped working the entire time! He ensured the boat was cleaned and organized after each catch!! He prepped and set up and it was SO AWESOME! Captain J and I coordinated before hand and it was a blast!!!! My husband has not stopped talking about our trip! If you are a beginner like me, or have been out on the water a lot like my husband you will HAVE A BLAST! Captain J is hilarious! You can tell under his Captain exterior he really cares about all the kids who work for him! He expects a lot because he wants to do the very best for his customers! Went fishing for 6 hrs with Pat (Captain) and Brad (?) (deckhand, but can't remember if that is the correct name). First impression: positive. Called the company and was able to book on short notice for 4 people. Asked several questions and the person on the phone responded quickly with detailed information. At the deck before fishing: When we arrived on time, they were unprepared and still getting the boat ready. We waited around and left a little later than originally planned. No problem, because they could make it up on the back end, but I want people to know what to expect with this company. Also, before we left: The captain thought he was being funny when he greeted us, but came across offensive and obnoxious. My friend has a difficult time hearing and asked him to repeat some information and he screamed in his face. My friend is a 60+ year old gentleman. Fishing: The deckhand was knowledgeable and fun to be around. He explained the fishing process in Kauai and answered any questions. When we got on the water, he put 5 of the 7 lines out and they worked on the other two lines for about 1 hr before getting those out. Captain: Said very few words the entire time except that he was looking for fish and birds. He answered a couple of my questions very quickly. Results: No fish caught & no strikes in this 6hr trip. But that's how fishing goes! This does not bother me, as it's part of the game - HOWEVER - One thing that put me off from this company is the following request that was ignored by the crew. Request: Before we booked the trip, I asked the company to plan 4 hrs of "trolling" and 2 hrs of "drop" fishing - especially if we didn't catch anything trolling for the first 4 hrs. I don't know the technical terms - but trolling means that you drag the line behind the boat typically in deep water for big game fish and drop fishing means you drop the lines from the side of the boat typically near the reef for smaller fish (but typically a high chance of catching them). I asked the deckhand about drop fishing and he said we always do that and we can certainly do that towards the end of the trip. Unfortunately, I did not have my phone/watch and at about the 5 hr mark, they told us we would be wrapping up shortly. I asked again about drop fishing and the deck hand told us that we do not have time. I'm not sure if the captain heard me, but if he did, he ignored me. I had two new fishermen with me and purposely planned both activities just to get a fishing pole in their hands (and of course it still might not have changed the outcome)! The impression I got is that the deckhand and the captain only wanted to go trolling for the big game fish that they can sell and make money on. They did not want to waste their time drop fishing for smaller fish that would not have given them any fish to sell (and thus no money in their pocket). This bothered me a lot because we paid a Significant amount of money for the experience and I confirmed everything ahead of time. Final impression: All in all, I will not use this company again and tried to leave a detailed review for their owner and for other future prospective buyers. read more

Long, long overdue ... but as fresh in my and my kids' memory as back in 2014. We went out with Justin and Rob on Marlin Monroe, had a really enjoyable day, modest haul (two good size dorados), called it a day and were heading back to harbor around 5 p.m. Everybody was mentally done for the day ... but not the fish. I heard Justin yell "Marlin! A big one!" and hear the line run a second later. Two hours of fighting the fish later, we brought it to the side of the boat, tied best we could and slowly chugged to the harbor in the dark. A 12.5ft blue marlin ... locals came out to the harbor to watch us hoist it. Justin and Rob were real pros. They called all the shots 100% right and worked super hard, but made sure there was a real role and a lot of hard work for me and kids as well, so everybody legitimately felt it was a team haul. Captain J came down to to the harbor and was extremely attentive to make sure we would drive home safely (with all the adrenalin in our systems). The bill (made by Captain J's friend) is now among the most prized memorabilia in our household. I highly recommend Captain J and his team. You will be in good hands. read more

Not even sure where to start. Meet captain J at the docks at 615am and was told the other half of the group cancelled and I figured he was gonna cancel the trip all together. But that was the complete opposite, we ended landing 6 yellow fin tuna. This was hands down something I will never forget and when I come back the first call is to the crew at deep sea fishing Kauai. Not only did I end up having the whole boat to myself the captain was nice enough to send me and my girlfriend home with some meat. The boat does have plenty of water and soda but bring food like sandwich and chips. Also I would recommend not wearing shoes like I did cause they will get wet when your landing your fish in the boat. Also don't freak out from the size of the boat like other yelpers complained about. 30ft is the perfect size for the swells. Anything bigger and it's all bad in big swells. Also the deck hand was kick ass and worked his butt off so make sure to bring cash to tip him. read more

My dad and brother-in-law and I took a fishing trip with Deep Sea Charters and had a great experience. They captain and skipper were very friendly and while we were waiting to catch a fish, they told us about the island and what we were passing by in the boat. My dad got sick and they were very nice about it, brought him water and made sure he was ok. The only reason I took off one star was because we only caught one fish on the boat and it wasn't even us who caught it. My brother-in-law helped the guy who caught it reel it in because it was so big, but my dad and I didn't get to bring anything in. So essentially we paid $150 each to sit on the boat. I get it though, it's always hit or miss. Overall, it was a great experience just to be out on the boat, I've never seen a fish that big in person. Keep in mind though, if you catch a fish, they beat it with a bat to knock it out and then gut it on the boat! They have to or the hot blood will cook the meat. The fish we caught was over 100 pounds so we didn't get to keep any of it, but they did give us part of a fish that was caught on another boat and it was delicious. We were ready to try our hand at deep sea fishing on Sunday, June 2nd. However, Captain Don called us that morning to tell us that the sea was going to be very rough with 6+ foot waves..........and would we prefer to cancel. This seemed like a good idea for we desert dwellers from Arizona! We do appreciate that he gave us good advice and that the refund for the trip was no problem. What am amazing day on the ocean! I took my dad, two sons, husband and a friend out for an experience, and what an experience it was!! It would have been great without a catch. But we did have a catch!! in fact, we had two....AT the same time! One of my sons (age 18) brought in one and my other son (age 14) brought in the other....of course with the expert help from Captain J and Deck hand (or Deck BOSS) Davy. Captain J and Davy were so entertaining and fun, on top of being obvious experts in what they were doing. With "mom" on board (probably unusual) they were so good at making sure i was comfortable...Safety first, Fun a very close second and amazing fishing on top of it all. We had a great time, and caught two VERY large yellow fin tuna (200 and 140 lbs). On the way back in, they were so nice to stop and let my son's friend take a try at reeling in an Amberjack from the deep sea, which really meant a lot to us, and made his day!! it was an extra effort and we had fun cooking up this special catch that night! I would definitely go again, and would recommend Captain J and Davy to anyone looking for the best adventure in Deep Sea Fishing. We learned so much, about Kauai and Deep sea Fishing. If you want to deep sea fish while staying in Kauai, I cannot recommend Captain J's more. Our crew, Captain Jeff and Deckhand Brandon were not only friendly, but determined to help us catch a fish on our private charter. We originally asked for the 4-hour tour, but ended up getting an extra hour on the house since we weren't getting any bites early on. Finally, we saw tunas jumping out of the water and quickly snagged one on the line. It took 30 minutes and the help of Jeff, Brandon and my boyfriend to pull up a HUGE 215 pound Yellowfin tuna. The crew was just as ecstatic as we were because of how heavy the fish actually was. When we docked they explained the fish had to be immediately iced to make it to the market, as all fish in Hawaii are owned by the boat for sale back on the island. Since they couldn't cut us any of the catch, they promised they'd call us and deliver some other fresh fish within the next day or two. The next day, Jeff called as he said and delivered pounds of fresh Mahi Mahi directly to our rental in Kapa'a (this fish was easily worth like $20 a pound). He couldn't thank us enough for being so understanding about not getting any of the fresh fish we caught. Definitely take this tour! read more

Happy to say that we caught a 15-lb yellowfin tuna right at the end of the day to go with the wavy back tuna another guy caught just after we set out. Great outfit capable and willing to put you on the fish. Captain J called me back promptly after leaving a message and kept in contact until we met him at the dock. Took our 4 kids ages 9-13 out just before the tropical storm Guillermo hit and amidst the rolling waves and seasick kids we managed a 145lb Ahi, 2 skipjack tuna and a nice dorado. The crew was great (thanks Captain Jeff and deckhand Brandon). They not only helped make sure the fish made it into the boat but they also cared for the kids and gave us enough fish for a few meals.
