With all the Italian restaurants in Staten Island it's refreshing to see a successful Syrian restaurant open up. I was looking to try something different, and Laila serves dishes I have never tried before. For appetizers here I had the mini pies and Toshka Cheese which is pita bread stuffed with 3 different cheeses. Both were good! For dinners here I had the chicken shawarma and the Fattet Mozat. Both were really good! The chicken shawarma is thinly sliced roasted chicken some of it was wrapped in a pita bread, and it came with fries and garlic sauce. It was really tasty! The Fattet Mozat was a layer of eggplant over tahini sauce mixed with yogurt and chopped pita bread topped with ground meat. I'm glad I was able to try that unique dish! It was very good! There's so many items on the menu and so I am basing my rating on several Items, the Chicken Fettah Schwarma, Makanik, Falafel, Kenafah, and Hummus. I think this restaurant seems to take a conservative approach to certain food items. The Chicken Schwarma was my least favorite. I find better schwarma in some food carts in Manhattan. This is because of a personal preferences and it's not like the Schwarma at Laila was bad, it just wasn't my type and it was barely seasoned. I think the food is made to cater to a broader clientele, people who may not like spicy meats. The Chicken was nicely topped with almonds but the rice was plain, not spiced and merely drenched in garlic yogurt that didn't taste too garlicky. There's nothing wrong with that but I just like more spices. The Hummus on the other hand was superb and presented beautifully. The falafel was good, not too dry, but I was hoping it would be more herbaceous with lots of parsley. I loved the Matanik the best, great sausage, very tasty and good. Usually, my reviews are relatively short. But not this time. I need to share all details of this terrible experience. I had dinner at Laila a few times before. Wasn't a huge fan of this place (mostly because of outrageously loud music) but food was always ok. Not top notch, not anything creative but who would expect anything like that from a regular Mediterranean place? Yesterday was my friend's birthday and she reserved a table for 10 people, her best friends. We came at 7pm and were seated right away. Our server came, we ordered drinks and the "birthday girl" ordered appetizers for the whole table. Drinks came first. I ordered a shot of Woodford Whiskey. They brought it in the very unusual glass (see photo). I understand that whiskey is whiskey in any glass, but if they serve 18 (eighteen) different whiskeys, wouldn't it be normal to have a regular whiskey glass? Then came appetizers. They were ok. As always. Nothing bad, nothing extraordinary. Then, when we finished with appetizers, a busboy brought another plate of salad. We had no idea what our friend ordered for the table so me and one of my friends put some in our plates. In a minute, the same busboy came, took this plate and gave it to another table. Apparently, it was their order. /Dear guys from another table! I apologize for eating your salad. I swear I had no idea! / Then our server came and she wrote down our orders for main course. Meanwhile, the busboys were constantly moving 3 heaters around us. The space is huge and while some people were sitting in Sahara (right under heaters), other were suffering from cold temperature. Since we were sitting right by the door, we asked our hostess to let us seat at another table. We were then moved to that other table, but it didn't change the actual situation. At one side of our table was very hot, on another very cold. But it was not life threatening. Just very inconvenient. So we were sitting there for an hour and a half. No food. Nothing. Loud music. So loud that we couldn't talk to friends who were sitting across from us at the table . Then we called our server and asked her about main course. She was surprised. Very surprised. Said: "Give me a second" and run away. In 5 minutes, our main course came. As you can guess it was cold. I assume it was on a kitchen counter for at least an hour and none of the staff cared. But I might be wrong. Maybe they specialize in making cold kebabs. So, obviously, we sent it back. Waited another 40 minutes, meaning we had been at the table for 2 hours and 20 minutes from the moment we ordered food. Called our server again and told her that we don't want our main course and would like to order a dessert, because that was an outrageous amount of time to be waiting. She said she can't cancel anything and we have to talk to our hostess. Surprisingly the hostess (who claimed she is a "part-owner" of the restaurant) Tatiana (?) started screaming: "You sent back the first order, we are making another one for you! There is no chance I'll cancel it! I don't care what you'll do with it! Take it home if you want! I won't cancel it!" We were shocked and decided to wait. In another 10 minutes our server brought a check. Yes, they cancelled our order. And, yes, they didn't let us order a dessert. Even more, the check included 20% tip. I understand, waiting for 2 and a half hours for food and refusal to let us order a desert qualify for a 20% tip. We paid with cash (even paid for "If you pay by credit card there is a $15.55 fee) but didn't leave a tip. And left the restaurant. We were standing outside thinking where we will go to eat while our server came outside and said that we didn't pay in full. We explained to her why we didn't leave a tip. Then, basically at the same moment, we saw restaurant's owner. He heard our conversation with the server and asked us what happened. We explained it to him. He apologized numerous times and said "Don't worry, I will take care of you". Have no idea how he was planning to take care of us since we were leaving and he didn't invite us back to let us have dessert (at least). So I told him that I will write a review on Yelp. In response he started laughing and said "I don't care about Yelp. I am in business for 20 years! You can write whatever you want." So I wrote. Not "whatever I want". Simply description of our eventful evening. To add more - my friend's birthday celebration was completely ruined. She was beyond upset. And all of us were upset. Do I have to say that we'll never go to this place? If you are slightly a masochistic type and would like to be verbally abused by the hostess (supposedly - part owner) Tatiana - that's the perfect place for you. read more

The food was excellent and very inviting and easy to order for someone who's never really had Syrian food. The genre is mediterranean so it's similar to Greek, Israeli, etc. The Laila Combo was a great appetizer to try the different dips they feature in a lot of the meals. Will start off by saying, we will NEVER BE BACK IN THAT PLACE. We were a large group of friends who booked a table for New Years celebration at Laila. It turned out to be pretty rough night. Food was mediocre at best but this wasn't new to us as we always went there for entertainment. During the night, my friend approached owners about the music choices and was told that if she doesn't like something she can leave. When we originally booked a table , we chose a specific banquet menu that came with seafood and was pricier than the basic option. During the night we didn't get any of our seafood choices that were part of the banquet but when approached the owner, she started being rude. Then she escalated to screaming and cursing. Didn't apologize that food didn't make it to the table but instead screamed " what the f*#&k do you want from me?! " , "you ruined my f*#*ng night! " etc She and her husband were offensive and almost got into physical fight with us breaking glass and such. Possibly both were drunk. I have never came across such a disgusting, disrespectful, and rude behavior from owners of any place. PS. Next day I received an insulting apology from her via text that kept on offending my friend but asking for apology. Also she admitted that seafood wasn't served to us as she checked the cameras and offered to get few bucks back if I call her back. I didn't call back and will not.
