My daughter, who lives in Olympia, Washington, encouraged us to visit the San Juan Islands (and take her with us, of course) this year. I looked at several possibilities and settled on the San Juan Waterhouse because of its location to the ocean, its view of Canada, the fact it had Internet (I thought I might need to work) and its online reviews. We were lucky that our son was also able to join us, so we felt we needed three bedrooms. The San Juan Waterhouse sits on the edge of the Haro Straight. Its water facing wall is nothing but windows, so nearly every location in the house (including the master bathroom) provides an easy view of the water. The house has three bedrooms. The master bedroom is situated so you can see Canada from the comfortable king size bed. The second bedroom is in a room with three walls of windows. This bed is a Queen. The third bedroom has two twin beds and has high windows overlooking the sod roof of the house. The main room of the house has comfortable furniture surrounding a beautiful stonework fireplace (gas) and padded window seats with many pillows for reading and gazing at the water. The kitchen. Oh my goodness, the kitchen! It has everything you could possibly need for cooking (including basic spices) and an amazing Viking stove. I'd never used one of these before and now covet one for my own house. Because my family was not going to be together for Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving celebration two weeks early and cooking the meal was a breeze (and fun) in that kitchen. The kitchen also holds the house's main heat source -- a gas powered iron stove. It really heats up the place -- even the master bedroom which is down a long windowed hallway. The house has two bathrooms. One, as previously mentioned, has views of the water through the windowed French doors. (they have curtains, so don't worry about privacy). This bathroom has a claw-foot bathtub and a separate shower. The second, smaller, bathroom holds a second claw-foot bathtub (no shower). While the house itself is amazing, the best part is the location. The architect took great pains to fit it in with the surroundings and Frank Lloyd Wright slopped ceilings guide your eyes to the beautiful landscape out the windows. The house is situated on a small cove. My son and daughter ventured out during a late-night very low tide and found some interesting sea life in the tide pools. We had one beautiful sunny day and one day with strong winds and violent waves. We saw many gulls, three eagles and two small deer. I am already plotting our return to this beautiful house -- hopefully in the summer next time.

Sadly, because of the storm there was a power outage, which suddenly left us in panic. But then the landlord Brenda was great, really helpful. This vacation was a really memorable one and one of the most important contribution there was this beautiful vacation home. However , we did wish there was a generator to help us during the outage. Overall a perfect place for outing.

On the other hand, I have stayed in a variety of cabins around the country, and this was by far the most expensive per square foot AND the least updated, although they did stock the kitchen with every utensil and tool you will need. We stayed in 108 at the end. I would definitely advise to the manager or owners of the property to add a little list of where all supply stock is located for your guests. When we arrived, the toilet paper AND paper towels were nearly out. We searched in obvious places under the sink and cabinet drawers to find more toilet paper, to find it later in a small hideaway above the washer and dryer. Games and puzzles are located in the kitchen drawers to the left of the sink. Emergency items such as flashlights, candles are located in that same area in the kitchen. If an extra blanket is needed, I wouldn't know where to find one. Otherwise, I great place to come.

They are riverfront on the Sol Duc and you can enjoy the view from anywhere on the property. Plenty of room and space for any activity. Reading a book by the fireplace, playing games at the dinner tables or enjoying the outdoor fire pit. They have great mud rooms as we were up there fishing. This way we could dry out day to day. These two rentals are maybe 5 miles from Forks. Far enough to feel like your way out but close enough to run into town for anything you need. I will definitely be back up at the Cozy River House the next time I am up on the Olympic Peninsula. It's a great find!

The "king beds" are actually just 2 twin beds pushed together. The bathrooms are small and dark. These issues are not disclosed anywhere, in fact we only found out from another guest that breakfast was not included. If we had known these things beforehand and if it was about 30% cheaper, it would have been worth it, but as is, it was overpriced. The rooms were nicely decorated and clean and there was a fun living room with tons of games, movies, books and things to do inside, but the best was outside. There was a fire pit just steps from the ocean as well as a hot tub with an ocean view. The kitchen was fully stocked even with a spice rack so we could cook things while we were there. We had a very affordable small-ish room with an ocean view and it was so perfect waking up listening to the sounds of the ocean. The town itself is small and rural, mostly a farm town, but the people are all very friendly and there is a great pizza place and restaurant down the street. Metchosin is about 35-40 minutes from downtown Victoria so having a car (rental or bring your own on the Ferry) is probably a good idea. The owner of the lodge is a wonderful lady named Marg who is friendly, funny, helpful and full of interesting stories. She also teaches yoga and does massage there upon request. It would be a great place to go for a retreat too for a group of people. The two of us actually had the place pretty much to ourselves because the other people who were supposed to come missed their ferry over so it was certainly an added bonus to have that much space and privacy. There is free WiFi and a phone you can use too, which comes in handy when you are coming from another country like we were and had no use of our cell phones there. We would definitely go back and we plan on it!
