This is an absolutely lovely park, with wide open spaces as well as trails through the woods. All along beautiful lake Erie. The grounds are well-maintained and there is strategic seating along most trails. There were these chain link basket devices located around one field and it took me almost a month to find out that it has something to do with a frisbee game. There are bathroom facilities and grills and garbage pails so this is designed to be used by families for picnics. I plan on returning in the summer to see this beautiful park in full bloom. read more

Lake Erie State Park was our 4th of July camping destination this year. We're new campers in general, so this was our first time staying here. We camped for four nights. Lake Erie State Park is, as the name suggests, right on the lake. The campground is located just a short walk down to the beach and shoreline. We had electric site #41. It was a very large, grassy site. It was a hot weekend, and there was almost no shade on this site. Other than that, it was a nice and roomy, level site. The location was good too, not far from the bathrooms and a short walk to the beach area. The bathrooms near our site were cleaned well each day. It's an odd old set up of a bathroom, but it was functional and kept stocked and tidy. The showers are each in their own little room, so privacy is good. But you have to walk outside to get from the shower to a sink/toilet room. Kind of strange, but it got the job done. There is a small lifeguard-staffed rocky beach area on Lake Erie that was fun for swimming and sunning. For the 4th, you could see several fireworks going off along the shoreline at dusk. In the same area as the beach is a large rec hall that was well-stocked with game tables (pool, ping pong, air hockey, skee ball, etc.), board games, crafts, and outdoor games you can borrow. Everything was free to use. The park is close to Dunkirk, Fredonia, other beaches and parks along Lake Erie (Evangola, Lake Erie 'Beach' Park, Bennett Beach, etc.), and very near the cutest little historical town of Westfield. We did a few offsite rides, including stopping at a 4th festival with live music and vendors on the waterfront in Dunkirk. Lake Erie State Park was a hot hit with our family. It was a scorcher of a weekend, so it was nice to have the beach right there for a dip. We enjoyed the rec hall, checking out nearby sites, and chillaxin' on our site. Looking forward to camping here again next summer! read more

Love this place! Came here for a couple of hours in July to walk the nature trails. $7 to enter the park for a car. Very well maintained park with very clean shower and toilet facilities in the camping area with playgrounds. By the lake there is a gazebo and pavilion and grills with picnic tables and a community center with ping pong, fusball etc. I like the book exchange by the camping area. Lots of green space and the grounds were full of campers! I would give it a 5 star if it had laundry services. read more

We did a little one-day camping weekend here, and we enjoyed it. One of the downsides is that when you only reserve for one night, you have to wait until a few days before the weekend, and a lot of the prime sites are taken up. This isn't really the fault of the park per se, but an overall problem with NY State parks as a whole. The campsite we ended up with did have a bit of shade, and although it wasn't exactly the most private place in the world, it was still quite nice. We were relatively close to the bathroom/shower facility, which was very nice, and also close to a path that led down from the bluffs to the lake. There's no beach at this park, so keep this in mind. Still, there are some nice pathways to walk around on, and there's a gorgeous view of the sunset over the lake. This park would also be a really beautiful place to hold a wedding. There's a nice gazebo area with a picturesque stairway, and a large old lifeguard house that would server well for a reception. So, overall a great experience, and a park that I would stay at again. read more

So, this is an interesting place. It is convenient to the thruway. The park is clean and the staff is friendly. The tent campsites are very nice and reasonably priced. Bathrooms are a little dingy, but not dirty. The huge downside was camping here overnight you won't be getting much sleep as the trains blow their horns ALL NIGHT. I couldn't believe it! This is at no fault of the park, but you think there'd be quiet hours. The beach was ok, but very rocky, not much sand. The trails and grounds are very pretty and nice view of the lake. This park is gorgeous! The "beach" at the lake is all rocks though. It isn't safe for kids to mess around on unless parents are paying close attention. However, it is absolutely gorgeous. We played disc golf at the course that was made which was overall nice. We didn't get a chance to explore much more but the bathrooms were clean! read more

I have now stayed here 3 times on trips to and from Arkansas. The location is excellent for the car camper - relatively easy on/off from Route 90. The campground is nicely located on the shores of Lake Erie, and the views at sunset are excellent. I am a tent camper, and the primitive sites are in a quiet section of the campgrounds. One of the biggest drawbacks I've noticed are the nearby train tracks. The train whistles blow at odd hours, and they can disturb a light sleeper. Overall, this is a nice spot for transient campers, and I wouldn't mind having a few extra days here to explore the nearby area. It looks like a cyclists paradise along the local roads. read more

Beautiful views of the sunset. However, in the loop we were at, which is close to the lake, the air stunk all day. A local from a nearby winery told us that this park DUMPS their sewage into the lake. That would definitely explain the smell. The bathrooms are really not good, and there is no where to swim. You can't swim in lake erie because it is so polluted. We decided to stay at the nearby KOA the next night, and for THE SAME PRICE it was much better. read more

Love this place!! Gorgeous views and plenty of room to explore. Hike, bike, walk, rollerblade, camping, volleyball, swimming, basketball, and so much more. Walk the beach or just relax in a bench. Pet friendly, handicapped accessible, and can even host your special events. Frisbee golf, play grounds, and plenty of acres to roam. If you need a place to clear your mind or are looking to pick berries and bird watch, located right on Lake Erie's waterfront, this State Park is really a hidden gem. read more

Reserve America says the sites are partially shaded- not really. Very few trees & only a few spots that get any shade. That being said it is a good location to explore from- not a lot at the campground itself. Better to stay at evangola if you want a state park with hiking & swimming. read more

I am usually pretty opened minded about conditions and features, but I must say I cannot understand how Lake Erie State Park could make the top 100 US campgrounds list! The basic features and amenities are average, at best. The beach was a nice feature, the camp sites were most like a typical American trailer park: mostly RV parking sites with fairly minimal distance between sites, so privacy was very limited. But the real kicker was the background audio level at night -- There is a very noisy highway and freight train blaring warning horns loudly at all hours of the night. I could not get over how loud it was! We were camping in a tent not an RV and were awoken many times throughout the night. Maybe someone in an RV with windows closed and A/C running full tilt could drown out the background noise, but I am doubtful. Camping is supposed to be a peaceful, serene and restful experience, in my opinion. This was anything but quiet. There is nothing the rangers could do -- not there fault. It's just that the location is just subject to a very disruptive acoustics. We will not return. I left feeling completely exhausted from a lack of sleep. read more
