Lake Harris campground is located on the southern side of the high peaks on Rt. 28N. It's got 90 campsites, most are fairly private and more than half located on the lake. It's almost as far removed as you can camp while still having hot showers and flush toilets.
I've been camping here for over 10 years, the campground caretaker or manager, Brenda, is the best. She's extremely personable and welcoming, ready to answer any question you might have.
The campgrounds is a great place to use as a base to explore the high peaks, paddle the Hudson, hike to a fire tower or just sit in front of the fire and listen to the loons.
The town of Newcomb is full of friendly people but not much else if you want to shop or be entertained. Down the road from the campground is Great Camp Santanoni,, the Adirondack Interpretive Center, Goodnow Mountain. In the other direction is the Upper Works access to Mount Marcy and the surrounding high peaks. In the town there's a small general store, an ice cream stand, a single gas pump and a diner. read more
