Last summer we rented a cabin just off the base of Lake Laura and had such a wonderful time. After the rain, the water was sparkling in the sunlight and was perfect for wading and even a little bit of fishing! My five year old niece was with us and enjoyed tip-toeing through all the puddles and looking at all of the different animals, mushrooms, and flowers we found. We could even hear a woodpecker in the distance! We tried to go to the boating center since they have a roped off area where you can swim and paddle but for some reason it was closed. There was no signage or way to contact them to see when they opened up which was the only bummer. The lake also has an easily accessible trail which helped me get all of my Fitbit steps in. Everything was so secluded it felt like I was on a long weekend even though I was just there for two nights. Apparently there is strong magnetic forces in this area which makes Lake Laura the perfect place to relax and heal.

Meh, I was disappointed. The public access to this lake is via a narrow rocky road that passes some private facility that gave me the wrong impression that I was on a private road. Anyway, i left and came back when I found out it is the way to the lake. There is a gravel parking lot where you park and then you have to walk uphill on a gravel road to get to the lake. No handicapped access here. Then you find a small ugly gated area around the only waterfront. It cost 8 dollars per adult to go in to this area. There is no bathhouse and the bathroom is an port-a-potty. This is where you can swim. I thought the price was expensive. I did not stay.

Nice pretty easy trail that loops around the lake (some parts are thin & steep, but made it through with the dog) . Absolutely loved this place on our vacation. Quite peaceful. I counted 6 shelters too so I imagine in spring /summer it gets used a lot. They have porta potties and a 2-stall bathroom for women & a bathroom for men too. Hand washing station outside. We came during the week of October 13th & the foliage was beautiful.

Beautiful and I mean breathtakingly beautiful landscape! Mountains in the distance! Prices are extremely affordable (coming from DC and being used to paying up to $40 for two people to paddle board for 30 mins, which is normal for me). For $3 or so you can take out a kayak per person per hour. If you're fishing make sure to bring all you need and purchase your license AND additional $5 permit to fish there. They sell small snacks and ice cream. Bathroom situation is dicey considering it's a porta-potty but hey honestly all in all I would come again and I would spend days on end here either by myself or with family.

Riding stables are great place to have a beginner get a first horseback riding experience. ($26/hour). Sulphuric spring is an interesting historic and wonder list place. The water spout is wonderful color due to water content. Cabins seems a great base for nearby fishing spots. Worth visiting for the reasons above.

I recommend the Loblolly trail for the beginners and Cranny Crow for the more adventurous. Also be sure to make reservations with Hidden Valley Stables for a horse ride. We like the two hours up to Cranny Crow - the view is amazing- and there's something magical about reaching the top on top of a horse- but for those less enthusiastic about riding, there are many shorter and less challenging options. They also offer 5 dollar rides for the little ones. As for cabin amenities, if you plan to truly cook meals, bring your favorite pans. While many are supplied, we prefer bringing our own knives, pans, and skillets. Also bring sufficient food supplies. There are a few restaurants in the area--- but they are at least twenty minutes or more away. Bring extra trash bags as well. The pool is crisp and clean but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. There is a beautiful swimming spot at Trout Pond which is about thirty minutes away on a curvy curvy country road. But we find the clear cool lake water and white sand "beach" surrounded by mountains worth the drive and effort for a day trip, especially with younger ones.

What a good HAWT time!…read more We came on a Saturday, mid August, and had a good, relaxing time. Besides the heat trying to take me out, I had absolutely no complaints. Front Royal Outdoors had their logistics in order from start (parking) to the brief bus ride, all the way to finish (exit). Our party all opted to do the deluxe tube (approximately $41 for the entire experience) that offered more support (a place to hold your beverage of choice) and the possibility to maximize on one's lazy river experience. As an FYI, every "order" of course came with a life jacket. The river itself was calm and effortless, for the most part. I think our experience was a little over 3.5 hours. My only recommendation would be to hydrate and find a time/date where the heat is not doing what it does best.... drains ya.

Long weekend with hubby and our fur baby. We stayed at the Freida cabin in Shenandoah North,…read moreVirginia. It is less than 2 hours away so not far away for a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle. Our cabin is super cute, cozy and clean. The cabin had a kitchenette with 2 burner stove, mini fridge, paper towel, dishwashing soap, and cooking supplies. The food we brought fit in the fridge. Bathroom was well stocked with plenty of towels, body soap, shampoo & conditioner. We also got 3 bundles of firewood to do some grilling and s'mores. The location was super quiet that you can actually relax. Our favorite part of this trip is definitely the Stroopies. Not your traditional graham cracker s'mores but a chocolate gooey marshmallow sandwiched between 2 caramel filled Stroopaffle. Genius and yummy. We plan on coming back next time and stay at another cabin or other locations in the US. Another positives - the staff are so so friendly and very responsive. They checked up on us every day and throughout the day by text. Not intrusive at all - replenished the stroopies and some of the snacks. One very minor downside, there's not enough plugs especially in the sleeping area for two people who uses medical equipment. The staff did suggest to book an ADA approved cabin & I actually got to check it out. Definitely something to keep in mind for future bookings. Overall a great stay and highly recommend!!!
