Big Creek Park in Chardon has quite a bit to recommend it, but it has one major issue: despite what…read moreis on the map and listed on Alltrails, there is no way to cross from the West side of the park to the East side of the path using the Highline Trail. There is an option to follow the Buckeye Trail but that entails a walk of about 1 mile on the roads surrounding the park. On the West Side of the park is the Creek Trail, which is a nice hiking and bridal trail that is an out and back hike. The trail winds through the woods and has a couple of views of the creek; there are some decent hills and there is a very nice picnic plaza and pond at the Ravenna Road parking lot. The East Side of the park is the main area with more options. There are about 3 miles of hiking trails, plus since the last time I was there they have added 6 miles of mountain bike trails; you can hike these trails as well, just make sure you are hiking the opposite direction the bikers are going and be alert and aware at all times. The mountain bike trails are great, winding through the woods with plenty of twists and some good elevation changes. The park also has a number of reservable camp sites with tent pads, lean-tos and "tree houses". A cool opportunity to do some camping in the forest. With the new mountain bike trails Big Creek offers some longer and more challenging hike opportunities and I will be back to do some more exploring. The Geauga Park district keeps making improvements to the park. Other then the issue with the Highline Trail there is a lot to enjoy getting out into nature.

We…read morestarted out on the Butterfly path, which was short and easily walked, and then transitioned to Hemlock Ridge and finally Bluebell Valley and then back on Hemlock Ridge. Bluebell Valley had some areas that were steep and slippery and a huge flight of stairs. We got to see a snake and a deer, as well as chipmunks. There are many beautiful trees, but unfortunately the water was so low that the stream was barely running. We saw one picnic pavilion and there was a restroom. Metro Parks does a great job taking care of their parks.

The garden is part of the Cleveland Public Library and it is actually connected to it. It is named after Linda Eastman who was director of the library years ago (1918-1938). I finally visited in July 2023 with a friend. We both enjoyed walking around, taking photos, and admiring the beautiful windows of one of the adjoining buildings. The garden is surrounded by trees, a tall iron gate at both entrances, a very small waterfall, benches, and movable chairs with a tables placed all around the garden. When you step into the garden, you instantly feel a sense of happiness, serenity, and peace as you hear birds chirping and breath in fresh air. Hopefully you visit on a quiet day because there are always events around the city especially in the summer months. If I lived downtown, I would definitely come here often to read outside. A part of the Cleveland Public Library, the Garden honors long-time benefactors the Eastman Family. This is an interesting idea: this greenway with a road running through it is subdivided into little…read moreplots with various cultural artifacts. In practice, it is a bit rough with the traffic constantly and noisily whizzing by. Some plots were under construction when I stopped by, but more importantly, I was quite perplexed with the choice of cultures, which was heavily tilted towards Eastern Europe (are there a lot of Latvian and Azerbaijani immigrants to Cleveland?), but with other seemingly random countries occasionally making an appearance, such as Ethiopia and India. They have a Hebrew cultural garden with plaques of famous American Jews. Their Ukrainian section was dotted with extra accoutrements including blue and yellow stones by local schoolchildren, which didn't really strike me as being appropriate or helpful. The Ethiopian section was a surprising standout with its artistic display, while other sections focused on sculpture art or plaques. The amount of actual plant life native to the nominated region was in many cases minimal, but each plot was its own different endeavor. Walking the whole length of the path from the museum center to the waterfront was considerably longer than it appeared on the map, so I did only part of that.

I have driven past here so many times on my way to Case Western Reserve University law school, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and also the Natural History Museum. I got to finally explore these gardens (somewhat) when I met with a running group here on the Independence Day holiday (4 July 2019). I really have to come back to walk through the gardens because running past them didn't give me time to explore. GARDENS -- There are over 25 cultural gardens each for a particular country; for example, India or Ireland. The best way to see the gardens is by walking. You really have to get out of your car to explore the gardens further especially since some of them go deep inside along the trees. PARKING -- The gardens are situated on a very long Martin Luther King Drive street; hence, that's why there is no where to park. I suggest parking at the boat dock along Lake Erie and then walking through the gardens. I love the little lake here. There are some benches on both sides of the park (or "mall") with trees to provide some shade. The mall (park) is very well maintained with well cut grass. There are dust bins (trash cans) at the ends where some benches are located. I recommend visiting this park especially on a warm spring or summer day. It was tight for us to pull into and I had to move the neighbor's picnic bench to fit our MH into. Sites for motor homes are very close to each other. They say they have WiFi (which is important to me) but it is a $3.00 charge for 24 hours. Nice little lake and ponds to swim or fish in & a little sandy "beach" to sit on. The office store has some food, snacks & supplies for sale. We paid $30.00 per night with our Good Sam's discount (which is 10% off their rate) plus $3.00 charge to run our air conditioner and $3.00 for Wifi. I would have given this park 10 stars if the extras were not a $3.00 charge for each. Nice landscaping and they have a diner on the campground which has very limited hours.
