Enjoyed a food truck dinner and flights here with friends. Bartenders gave us each free growler filled with a beer they were cycling out to make room for new one. Beer styles aren't my favorite overall, but I'll be back because of the good service and location between Minneapolis and St. Paul. The double IPA is my favorite here, balanced in its intense hoppy flavor cushioned by a skilled brewmaster. Food trucks are common, and it's a great place to hang out during sundown for summer months, thanks to the large outdoor seating area. Everything inside Lake Monster makes me wonder what kind of stories I would hear if the walls could talk. Great industrial vibe inside with all the comforts of a modern taproom. Kid friendly, and great for big groups. If they rented this space out I could totally see people having wedding receptions here. Call me a dork but I really think their logo is awesome. I bought a growler just for this reason haha. In my opinion the beer here is great. The Calhoun Claw is a quality pilsner, and is one of my favorite beers brewed locally. The Empty Rowboat IPA might be their most popular and can be found on tap throughout the metro. The Monster SMASH 1.0 and the Oaked Irish Red in a cask were a couple of the newer ones that I tried last time I was there for John O's UYE. Especially when they are running around acting like assholes cause their parents aren't doing their jobs.....you know parenting? I want to love this brewery! I really do! It's BEAUTIFUL with a super cool industrial vibe and awesome light fixtures! Plus their brand is fun and kitschy! I love me a good theme! Bonus points for the Minnesota-y undertones. And it's family friendly! The owner (or an employee?) was actually having a children's birthday party while we were there! But the beer. It just wasn't that great. Idk. The only one I really liked was the dark lager (which was extra cool because the brew process included wild rice - I forget exactly what it was used for). This sounds like a good thing, but I usually hate lagers. Like all of them. From anywhere. So my enjoyment seems to imply that this lager might be a little un-lager-like. The IPA's seemed very bitter, the cask stout was served warm (I don't usually drink cask ales so idk if this is normal). I wouldn't say I hated any of the beer, but I wouldn't fight for a return trip. The mostly-decorative garage doors were very drafty! It was definitely cold in there! My wife and I have always enjoyed Lake Monster's beer, and we love visiting the taproom whenever we get the chance. Recently, we decided to host our wedding rehearsal dinner at Lake Monster since it's right down the hall from our wedding venue (PAIKKA) in the Vandalia Tower building. We ended up in the area back by the brewing tanks, which was the perfect semi-private space for our group size (~30 people), plus we were able to conveniently set out our catered food on the perimeter bar. The folks at Lake Monster are often very busy, but are some of the nicest people you'll meet - especially Matt, who handled scheduling our event. On the day of the rehearsal, we were able to have one of our relatives set up the food ahead of time at the brewery without any issues. When we arrived from the rehearsal, the bar staff gave us a roll of drink tickets for our guests to use at the bar. This was a great system because we could easily control the number of comped drinks we handed out and then pay for everything on one card at the end of the night. If you're having your wedding at PAIKKA like we did, you won't regret having your rehearsal dinner at Lake Monster! read more

I like 1-2 of their lager beers (I'm not picky about beer at all) but this place gets 5 stars for location, being kid friendly during the day and having a wide variety of games and toys. It's also very big so you can have a bigger group. We regularly bring packed lunches/dinners for the kids and get food truck food for ourselves. Before 7-8pm, there are A LOT of kids there so be warned if kids aren't your jam. The patio is great too! read more

First time at this brewery and I can't say that I was disappointed at all. The beer range was nice and unique. I tried a dark sour and a hibiscus floral beer that we're both spectacular. The environment was amazing. A lot of room to have a bigger crowd and ample outdoor space. The staff seem pretty great as well! read more

Great atmosphere and staff here! The bartender helped me sift through which beer would be the best fit for me. Then when I was sitting in the sun and overheated, the hostess helped me find a table to move to in the shade. The inside is also fun and funky, the classic warehouse brewery vibe. The only strike against Lake Monster was the limited selection. If you love hop-forward beer this place has tons of variety for you, but if you're more of a lager/lighter beer drinker then there are only a few to choose from. Hopefully they continue to grow and there's more on tap on my next visit! read more

Great place to grab a beer. I had their stout and it was awesome. It was rich and had a strong, full flavor without being bitter. The decorations are interesting and it has a cool artsy vibe. Very different from the classic brewery atmosphere you get so much of in Minneapolis, which makes it a nice change of pace. read more

Mixed review Ahead: Beer: I had the milk stout, and it was very good. Guinness - like, and very smooth. Nice beer. Others in our group liked their choices, too. Atmosphere: when we walked in the music was deafening, fortunately, the bartenders turned it down so that we could actually hold a conversation. Misc.: The only food available was a small tub of popcorn that was tough and stale. If they were giving it away, it would still be bad popcorn... But the unfortunate reality was that they charged a ridiculous $5.00 for it. C'mon, people. You make great beer... don't send people away feeling like they've been hosed. Get a popcorn machine and give it away for free. The aroma from the popcorn will cover the stale smell of the brewing process. read more

Lake monster has some of my favorite beer, but their brewery is over run with kids. You can't come to Lake Monster without hearing kids screaming and crying, or having kids run into you and your personal space. It really messes with the ambience. There was just a parent sitting next to me who was literally banging on a metal chair to keep her kid happy, which meant I couldn't hear my boyfriend talking to me. I will definitely continue to buy their beer in store because it's delicious, but I will not be back to their brewery. They should consider a "kid zone" so people can enjoy their beer in peace and away from the annoying noise of children. Great beer, too many kids. Awesome staff, beer and atmosphere! Lake Monster has an awesome Murmur Milk Stout, the Empty Rowboat IPA is great and the Howler DIPA is a DELICIOUS double IPA! Massive outdoor area one of the biggest in the cities. The staff is super friendly, funny and very nice. Dallas, I would assume that's how a highly intelligent person as himself would spell such a name...or at least his parents, is a hilariously great bar keep. Very help and they even had treats for our daughter to feed the neighboring table's dogs. The bar manager lady was very kind to let us have some. So family and dog friendly! They even have a little kids play area in a corner. Definitely a favorite brewery in the cities! Please support them. read more

Overall, I like this place. We went on a weekday (early) evening. The patio is spacious and has a lot of tables, and the inside is very BIG with the bar located centrally. They bartender was very friendly and joked with us. We ended up ordering the lake monster flight, or whatever it's called, that serves all the beers on in one giant flight so we could try them all. The beers were all just OKay... there really wasn't one that stood out to me as "wow, this is great!" And unfortunately, that's the biggest reason we go to breweries... for a good beer. BUT the vibe and location were fun and roomy, so there's that. If you're just looking for a brewery to take a group of friends to hang out, this is a great spot. If you're going just to try an amazing beer, this brewery might not be worth the trip. read more

This was a solid brewery/taproom visit. The location is somewhat remote, but if you're in the area, it's definitely worth visiting. I had the saison and my wife had the blood orange IPA. Both were refreshing, but complex enough to keep us interested. We spent most of our time on the patio, which was nice. Very spacious with many styles of seating. This is my least favorite twin cities brewery. Don't get me wrong the space is awesome, but it does not outweigh the mediocre beer and rude bartenders. The Empty Rowboat IPA was always a favorite whether it be in cans or at the taproom, until recently. It feels like either the taps are dirty or they switched the recipe. The other beer choices are just okay or good at best - there is nothing great. On top of the okay beer, the people serving are not people I'd like to get to know better. I got heavy eye rolls when asking for a sample and was ignored when I was ready to place an order. The only reason I'll be back is for my free beer on my pub pass. Don't waste your time with this brewery. Spend time at better St. Paul breweries that are in close proximity. read more

Went in to get my growler filled. I have been here before. People are nice and beer is a little better than average. But their people need training. I had filled and finished a growler the day before. When I gave them my growler he went to fill it without cleaning it. I told him it needed to be rinsed. He looked in it and made a face. Then begrudgingly washed it. Filled it. Did not seal it so I could get open bottle and did not label it. Very poor show boys. read more

Are they racist?? I was attending a wedding ajacent to this establishment. I am a Hispanic male. I was wandering outside our reception holding a beer and unknowingly walked into their adjacent patio. A red headed server came up to me abruptly and informed me no alcohol outside. Before I could even respond with an apology for not knowing the boundaries, he tried to physically remove the beer from my hand in an aggressive manner. I subsequently watched how he treated other wedding guests that happened to make the identical mistake. Every other person he found with a drink from the wedding group, who happened to be white, was greeted nicely and asked to comply with the rules. My wife informed me that immediately after I walked away from the red-headed bartender, the manager proceeded to argue with her about the incident and somehow felt the need to assail her with the comment "well if he could read" referring to a posted sign that in fact indicated that the boundary within which we stood was approved for alcoholic beverages. His insinuation was profoundly clear whether the sign related to the issue at hand or not. Why were they aggressive with the brown person?? I'm pretty sure I know why... read more

Stopped by after work with a group of coworkers for a few beers and to check out the place. Very loud music from a DJ at 4:30?! Could barely talk. I can understand the place rocking in the evening but at 4:30? Very weak. Otherwise, cool building and location. Bar tenders were great but evidently were powerless to turn down the sound. read more
