Had a great time paddle boarding with friends. It's 10 dollars to get into parking lot. Then we walked over to dock area and enjoyed the water. There are young and old people, there with kids , pets enjoying themselves. There is an area where people go just to hang out so ask about that if you're not interested in going in and floating. They also have rentals if you're interested.

I love coming here in the mornings to go paddle boarding. I've already been out twice this week, usually arriving between 9-10 a.m., and there are hardly ever many people out on the water at that time. The water is calm, making it perfect for beginner paddle boarders. I even brought my mom out with me yesterday she was a little nervous about falling in, but since the water was so smooth, we had no issues. We ended up paddling for about an hour and a half, and it was such a relaxing experience. Since I've been coming out so often, I went ahead and bought a Poppy Pass for $135 online, which covers parking at parks all over California. It's a much better deal than paying the $10 parking fee each visit. If you're a beginner paddle boarder, or just want a peaceful lake to enjoy on a weekday, I definitely recommend Lake Natoma.

A fantastic place to paddle. There's really neat things to see in every part of the river. It's a perfect flat water lake

Okay, so the review that I'm writing is for Lake Natoma, which is the entire portion of the American River between Folsom Dam and Nimbus Dam. The address on this business page is for Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, which is different, and which there is already a dedicated Yelp page for. There is no State Recreation Area named "Lake Natoma." Rather, there are actually several different state recreation areas from which one can access Lake Natoma. Off the top of my head, these include Folsom Lake SRA, Nimbus Flat, Hazel Overlook, Willow Creek, Beal's Point, Mississippi Bar, Folsom Powerhouse, Negro Bar, and more. Several facilities offer kayak rentals on Lake Natoma. The most popular ones that I know of are the Sac State Aquatic Center on Hazel, and Adventure Sports Rentals in Folsom. My daughter and I have gone kayaking on Lake Natoma from the aquatic center many times, and every single time has been a wonderful and memorable experience. Lake Natoma is surrounded by trails. For cycling, these include the American River Bike Trail, Lake Natoma Trail, and Johnny Cash Trail. For hikers and equestrians, there are the Pioneer Express and Jedediah Smith Memorial Trails. While popular hiking websites state that the hike around the lake is only about 12 miles, it's actually more like 18, if you go around the entire lake. However, it's easy to split into an 11 mile and a 7 mile portion. The 11 mile loop, starting in Historic Folsom, would include Lake Natoma Trail, crossing the river at Hazel to the American River Bike Trail, and finally crossing the river again at the Historic Truss Bridge to close the loop in Old Folsom. The 7 mile loop, starting in Historic Folsom, would cross the Historic Truss Bridge to the American River Bike Trail to Folsom Dam, then cross that dam to the Johnny Cash Trail, back to Historic Folsom. This loop is pretty easy, and usually takes just over two hours to complete. Optionally, one can add a few miles by extending the hike/ride up to Beal's Point, which is about a mile and a half up the American River Bike Trail from Folsom Dam. While the hiking trails run roughly adjacent to the cycling trails, they are much longer, overall. Hiking around the lake on the Pioneer Express and Jedediah Smith Memorial Trails takes about 20 miles. As to flora and fauna on Lake Natoma, there is way too much for me to name. Folsom is a popular nesting spot for bald eagles, which rest in the ancient blue oaks on the bluffs high above the river. California wild grapes, blackberries, and figs line the lower shores. Just a few miles away from the aquatic center, near Mississippi Bar, there is a protected heron rookery. Kayaking past this area, one is rewarded with views of white and blue herons and egrets. When I first moved to Folsom, I was so confused by the term "Lake Natoma." As I've mentioned, it's actually just a segment of the American River. As the crow flies, it's only about 6 miles long, but a hike all the way around, including crossing over both dams, is closer to 18-20 miles.

    Late summer
    Mr G.

Folsom area is a once a summer journey. For the second straight year I biked the area...the paths are set up nicely and the beach/picnic area and trails at Lake Natoma seemed the nicest of them all. We went before the dangerous heat and had a great time.

Calm water, great for paddle boarding and kayaking.

Great place for fun family picnic or to beat the heat in the summer time. If you also, are looking to Paddle board, kayak's or fishing with an easy convince boat launching area this place is for you. You can purchase yearly parking pass to enjoy all year round. The park does get pretty pack during the summer. Have mind It's a first come first service bases. Security comes by to check often which is great. Sac State aquatic center right across the lake rents out water equipments if you don't have your own.

Could be the best place for water rec in the area... almost. The good: perfect place to paddleboard, kayak, fish or swim. Huge floating area that can easily accommodate lots of people without feeling too crowded. Lots of inlets to explore and nature (deer, bald eagles, etc.) to see. Hardly any current and (usually) no boat wake so it's easy enough that kids can have a blast. And friendly rangers and lifeguards on beaches. Now the disappointing: I have yet to go when there is not a handful of people that bring speakers and blast music from their boards. I'm fine if people want to listen to music just for your small board radius, but the volume they set seems to be for the benefit of the whole lake. And unfortunately it's often the people with the most questionable taste in music that seem to crank it the loudest. The level of explicit lyrics and zero shame even when kids are nearby is pretty sad. Nobody wakes up and hauls all their gear out onto the water to hear somebody else's music. If they did, they wouldn't bring a speaker, they'd just enjoy their fellow boaters broadcasts. And there is quite a bit of beer etc being consumed so it's possible some people are too faded to realize how loud they have it? But noise carries extremely well over still water unlike the ocean so less is seriously more in this case. So if you go and you're actually there to enjoy nature, maybe pack some earplugs. And a last heads up for swimmers, there is supposedly a no wake or low speed boat rule but twice now I've seen boats flying down the channel and almost hit a swimmer in the water. I had to quickly paddle in front of a swimmer so the boat would change course, and the guy had just been staring at his phone. He also was blasting music so wouldn't have heard anyone warning him anyways. Definitely use the neon floats for distance swimming and hopefully they'll start patroling the boat traffic before someone gets hurt. Good luck!

    Beautiful night

Beautiful place to come out and get away and enjoy some vitamin D and some good times. Parking is $10, but if you're over 60 it is $9 dollars ....woo hoo you save a dollar... Gorgeous place to hang out. There are picnic tables and Sandy Beach for the kids to play and you can rent kayaks or stand up boards. I don't know how much the rentals are because we own ours... get out and start enjoying nature and the beauty in California...

    Can we bring dogs?

I've seen dogs there and they've all been leashed. Might wanna double check online. Search Lake Natoma on Google.

Does anyone know the distance across the short length of the lake?

Hello all! Can you come to the lake for just a day? If so, what is the price? Thank you!

Yes, I went for the day, but I can't remember the price. I do remember the receipt was good for three days and you can use to get in at other state parks.

Hope it helps! Entrance is accessible from Greenback Ln with $10 fee required per vehicle. 2 Parking lots available - 1 closer to boat launch area and another further lot that's more convenient for picnic areas and tables. Plenty of tables and area for lots of families to enjoy some water festivities! Have a big party or just want to lock down a few tables? Highly advise to come early. If you just need some space to place your mats down, it should be just fine. Incredible trails alongside the water for walking, jogging, and bike riding. Dogs are welcome but just make sure you pick up after them (I noticed a good number of dog poop near the water edge). Want to take a dip? Feel free! Quite cold but more than welcome to. Biggest reason why we came here? To see how the Kayak Rental system worked. Scan the QR code or visit the site to book your rentals and sign waivers. I was told they rented daily by a worker (young ones) but their online reservations just show weekends and random Wednesdays.. so good luck. Honestly Rental prices are higher than another spot we've been to, but this spot was much closer to home and easier to access. Price for convenience! We didn't go kayaking on this particular day but definitely plan to return with our own paddle board/Kayaks since it just makes sense to invest and go whenever we want versus rent a few kayaks with high rental feels. Who wants to return within 1 hr?! No way, you gotta stay out in the midst of nature for at LEAST a few hours! Pathway Tip: Walking or jogging? Stay on your left. Biking? Stay on your right. Standard Placer County rules. Great spot for families whether you want to picnic, swim, paddleboard, kayak, go for a nice walk, jog, or bike along gorgeous river waters scenery. Have fun!!

We haven't been here at sunrise, but the sunsets and stars are so beautiful... you can't help but slowly walk out when it is time to go. Lake Theodore is right off the road and not too hard to spot the entrance. For parking, you can park on the side of the road, right up to the entrance. There is a park & route below about 50 yards away, but that's quite a walk. You do go through a swirly gate and down a path, and there is a trail that leads to the back of the lake. There are spots you need to really pay attention to because of rocks and tree roots. Some trees are growing into the path. There is also some scat along the way, but hey! It's nature. What else do you expect! I have yet to take the path all the way around the small lake, but I have gotten halfway. It's easy to get stuck casting in spots because you'll see some big fish swimming by, or we start catching. In this small lake, you can expect to catch big mouth bass, small mouth bass, lots of blue gill, green sun fish, and a few extras swimming around. For us, the most popular bait we use is the natural big earth worms and night crawlers. For the big mouth bass, the seenkos are pretty popular... 3"-4" long (and we use the watermelon ones). I do like to head back to the front before it gets dark. You can see random spiders building their webs as the sun starts to set and heaven forbid I walk through those trees and go through a web and end up with a creepy crawly! I love bugs and fishing... but a random bug will make me shriek bloody murder, lol! When the sun goes down(on my side of town), there are so many stars to look at. Planes mostly fly over from the backside of the lake and those are fun to watch, too. I think we sat one night until 11pm casting and watching the stars. It was nice the moon was not out this particular night because it made it nice and dark and the stars shined so bright... As precautions, I suggest bringing bug spray and sun block. Bring some small collapsible chairs. Stock up on some water or whatever you drink. I easily spend 4+ hours at a time here admiring the beauty of nature. For those of you that know... tight lines!

While the park itself didn't disappoint, I'll admit we barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer. After paying the entrance fee, we drove around a bit but found there weren't too many roads to explore by car. We stopped at the lake long enough to take a few pictures and for me to use the restroom. The seasonal workers cleaning the bathrooms were friendly, though they were unable to share any fun facts about the lake (I guess I won't hold it against them). Since I don't have a boat, there was no getting out on the water... though one of my friends teased me to go inquire about the young man zipping around on a jet ski. Aside from boating, it seems like there are also camping spots and some hiking trails but we didn't get our shoes dirty on this visit. If I return, I'd love to slow things down and enjoy the park properly by maybe setting up a hammock by the lake, getting out on the water, or even trying a little fishing - as long as someone else handles the bait and any fish I inevitably catch! Overall, a beautiful spot with plenty of potential, I just need a do-over to experience it fully.

As a Sac State student (Go Hornets!) you get discounts on the rentals. However, if you're not a student the pricing on their rentals were very affordable. For reference, we rented a paddle board and kayak for 3-3.5 hours paying only $100! Again, over a holiday weekend! That's a win in my book. The shore is pretty rocky in some areas, especially the beach area near the entrance. If you continue towards the bend there is more sand for little ones to dig and play with. You'll encounter rocks but not nearly as large and in such an abundance. The beaches, walkways, and parking lot were pretty clean. Bathroom wasn't disgusting either! Lake Natoma has a lot of different areas to jump off from but I think this one is the most popular. The spot is great for bringing family as there is a lot of open beach and lots of clear water to hang out with family on. Across from the flats is a nice rocky shore, shallow water and turtle alley. Activities: Located right next to Sac State Aquatics and just off Hazel, this place can be VERY busy. Quite often if you are coming here later in the summer the lot is full. I highly recommend coming early. There isn't a rental place right off the beach like Black Miners bar but I think this is due to the aquatic center where you can rent quite a bit of equipment. They are actually a separate parking lot from the Nimbus Flat parking Lot. The area also connects to the trails that run along the entire lake and connects to the overall American River Bike Trail. This makes it even more popular. There is a nice boat landing (non motorized boats) and restrooms as well as some picnic tables and good tree cover on site. The only issue is that beach quality can be so-so but great for water sports and not having to deal with motorized boats like Folsom Lake. It's such a great gem to have a space like this. Folsom Lake and Natoma are both great depending on what kind of vibe you are looking on the water

Folsom Lake is a nice recreation state park. I've been coming here since as long as I could…read moreremember. It's one of the closest lakes in the Sacramento area where you can come to for outdoor water sports, or just to relax on the sand and be near water. There are multiple entry points to the lake, depending on your purpose. Beal's Point is nice if you want to come and chill or hang out, lay on the "beach", barbecue, or play in the water. It's great for families, friends or solo. You can also bring your paddle board or kayak too. If you have a boat, or jet skis, there is another entrance for that so that you can unload them into the water. There's 3 separate lanes for you to back up and unload into the water and everyone is usually mindful of each other's watercraft. I like the fact that they have a shop there onsite for last-minute items (tools, etc.) that you need for your boat or jet skis, including snacks and refreshments. There are also bathrooms onsite with a few stalls. There's plenty of parking also. It's nice to spend a whole day or 1/2 day here. We spent a good amount of time on the water and I loved it - nothing like soaking in the sun and playing in the water in hot days. I can't wait to come back and spend more time on the water.

Came here beginning of May to check out the lupine flowers. I parked at the Beek Bights parking lot as I was told that is where lupine flowers are at! Of course I came too late into the season as most were wilting. Was able to get a glimpse of some at least. It was a nice day out. Since I came on a weekday morning, it wasn't crowded at all. Peace and quiet. Walked around to check out all the wildflowers. After, did some hiking around the trails. Took a break to see the amazing view of Folsom Lake! Thanks to all the rain we had, the water level looks so much better! There is restroom located at the Beek Bights parking lot. Super convenient. There are multiple parking lots and spots. Folsom Lake is a great place to hike, camp, explore and more! Definitely coming back next year to catch all the lovely lupine flowers.
