Tournament was delayed by two hours due to rain. When we arrived the fields looked great and there was ample space to set up your own seating. A few trips were made to the bathroom by my group and no complaints. At one point, one person when to the concession stand to see what was on the menu as we were starting to get hungry. Come to find out that even though teams were still playing, the concession stand had closed. Most places would make an adjustment to their schedule for delayed tournaments to ensure they stayed open during the last games. This may be an external group that runs them, and I get it, it's just tough to corral hungry children and convince them they'll be fine for awhile longer.

People seem to be completely ignoring the signs because the park was incredibly crowded and no one was social distancing. Luckily, we were able to find a secluded picnic table to sit at and eat our lunch. It seemed like a nice park and I would have loved to stay and walk around on some of the trails, but I wasn't comfortable doing that considering how crowded it is. I'd recommend trying to find a less popular park than this one if you're just trying to spend some time outside.

Secure your vehicle, take a deep breath and get ready for a short climbing hike. This hiking trail probably rates as a moderate as it is little more than a gravel and dirt access road to the top. It starts off with a pretty swift incline but as it starts to corkscrew around Nanny's Mountain, it levels off a bit. And before you know it, you're at the top. There is a right turn just before the summit There is a clearing at the top and a large shelter that seems to be set up as a meeting place with a lectern and three rows of seats facing it. There are a couple of trash cans and that's it. No power, no barbecue grill and definitely no restrooms. Be prepared for that. There's also not much of a view from the summit. As it's January, the trees are quite bare so I could see some of the curve of the lake, but that's it. Occasionally, a plane on its way in to CLT. But no view of the skyline or of the surrounding area. I kind of want a view as my reward for a hike/climb. Not one here. Still, it was a nice and peaceful walk. And remember, never hike alone! Just a stones throw from Winthrop University is Winthrop Park. What you'll notice as you arrive:…read more The Tennis Complex: 12 well kept, lighted courts Winthrop Ballpark: One of the nicest baseball parks in the Southeast. Disc Golf Course: One of the best disc golf courses you'll ever play on. Winthrop hosts the national championships on this course annually. As you enter Winthrop Park a little further, you'll pass Winthrop Coliseum (the home of many a graduation and basketball game). On your left, you'll see the softball complex that is home to the Lady Eagles softball program. On the right you'll see a ton of open space that leads to Winthrop Lake, which is part of the Piedmont Wetlands Project. The area offers research opportunities for students and a view of the disappearing Piedmont wetlands. The small island in the middle was created as a nesting ground for area birds. There are picnic tables scattered around the grounds and the park is host to the Come See Me festival's tailgate every April. A fun time to spend with the community and listen to some local music. Soccer fields, a beach volleyball court and bicycle trails are also available for public use. Nestled in the back of the park, is Winthrop's 9-hole golf course. It's a bit ragtag, and it's for students and alumni, but it's a place to whack some balls. Adjacent to the golf course is Winthrop's track complex. It's clean and well kept. One of my favorite pieces of Winthrop Park, is their ropes course. A great place to work on team building and leadership, the ropes courses are offered for students and the public alike. The main play area is padded and it's a really great park for toddlers, babies and maybe the 10 and under crowd. Older kids might be a little bored since the play equipment was pretty basic, but again, great for young kids. There are benches, some swings and a small slide. Lots of good area to run around in but not quite big enough for an organized sporting event. Just a good old fashioned neighborhood pocket park. **Be warned, dogs are not allowed

My husband and I enjoyed the fitness center which was a large room and very clean and organized. They offer weekly free dance classes. Very active senior community too.
