If I could give zero stars, I would. This club is outdated and poorly managed. Some facilities are okay but not worth what they charge, and the jacuzzi often has a very strong chlorine smell that even irritates your eyes. I was there with four children and felt disrespected during an interaction with the owner Bruce. The way I was spoken to felt rude and condescending, yelling and threatening to call the police over moving chairs its crazy. Our membership was canceled right after his meltdown. Paying members deserve to be treated with courtesy and respect. I also observed the summer camp area while there. Children who were not in the pool didn't seem to have any alternative activities and were mostly left sitting around, with staff often raising their voices and telling them if they don't get in the pool is their problem. Overall, I left with the impression that this club prioritizes collecting fees over providing quality service and a positive experience for families. I witnessed something today and felt compelled to write a review. I witnessed the owner tell a young lady with 4 children to move from where they were sitting to clear the area. She asked if could move the chairs and he said no that she could use the regular chairs. To move From the lounge chairs to regular chairs. The young lady mentioned she had surgery recent and could not sit for a long time in a regular and needed to lay down to which he began yelling and telling her to move and that he would not ask her twice. He then began threatening and yelling that he would the police if she did not move. His communication was extremely disrespectful and rude. You do not run a business like that. These are paying members that pay to use the facilities. He then told her she would not be a member here anymore. It really left a bad taste in my mouth. I was planning on joining this club but now i won't. This isn't A place that cares about their members. They just care about your money. Try Belvedere Tennis Club, it is so much better! read more

Just wanted to let everyone know about this great gym in El Sobrante. Lakeridge Athletic Club has a great outdoor pool which I swim in every morning. It has a full gym, classes, sauna, hot tub, steam room, cabanas, bocce court, pickle ball court and tennis courts. The locker rooms are clean and have full showers. I have been going to Lakeridge for 12 years and love it. I mostly use the pool but have taken advantage of the classes from time to time. I know they have a great spinning class taught by Pilar which I have taken in the past. The staff is very friendly especially Cherie at the front desk who greets me with a smile every morning upon check in at 5:00 am. I have met a lot of nice people and made many friends. If you are looking for a full gym, give Lakeridge Athletic Club a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

The hours of 5am to 10pm accommodates a working schedule. The swimming pool is the draw for me and my family, although sunscreen in the pool makes it cloudy and smelly on and after hot days. Unfortunately, this is the only good pool for miles. When the water heater isn't broken, this is a great place. However, I (a disabled veteran) and my wife (a local school-teacher), couldn't receive a discount to save our life. The owner never responded to my calls, messages or emails asking to, practically begging, to be heard regarding the $600 initiation fee. Trans and nonbinary people are not safe here. The outdoor pool is lovely, but the illegal gender discrimination and harassment perpetuated and encouraged by staff members is unacceptable. We tried, via email and phone messages, to encourage learning and growth with management. They never responded. After two decades of summer memberships and intermittent year long memberships, we are done. We won't be returning until Lakeridge abides by California law, educates their staff, and chooses to become welcoming and inclusive for all people. The icing on the cake? We had to pay our bank to stop our monthly automatic membership dues because Lakeridge staff never acknowledged our canceled membership email, and couldn't confirm our cancellation over the phone. This my hang out over 40 years or my community. To me if you can afford gym membership it's best El Sobrante has to offer. Lots of locals including Orinda, El Sobrante, Lafayette, Richmond, Pinole, El Cerrito are members. The club full of friendly characters but some are good some are bad. We have few issues as time gone. Car break in, only one drunk person who was Not a member disrupting Swim lessons. Management has improved vastly over years. Aged like fine red wine, you need to be respectful of staff members. They are reason the Lakeridge Club is great place to be. I have watched it turn to single hangout to family and senior club. This location has potential but could be better organized and taken care of. Approximately a quarter of the machines are out of order, and most are outdated. The showers are not clean, and the pool is not regularly maintained. Although most of the staff members are nice, a few of the older employees at the front desk are rude and unpleasant. There's a man with longer hair who struggles to articulate himself coherently and is oddly condescending, and an older woman with shorter, pulled-back hair who is always angry and bad-mannered. I spoke with another member who also found her to be unfriendly. I would also not recommend the swim lessons; my child had a particularly bad experience. The instructor was 15 minutes late and didn't apologize. The instructor didn't show up the next day, and it took some time to find a replacement. Finally, on the last day of the lesson, the pool was closed for maintenance. The swim instruction itself was lacking as well. I now go to Canyon Swim School, which is much better. The school is well-organized, with well-trained and responsible instructors. It's also cheaper than Lakeridge, even with a membership discount. ...And the internet is essentially nonexistent. read more

Pool is always busy and often dirty, in the men's locker nobody wears a mask. The equipment are old and limited, the staff is awesome except the old timers ( including the manager). They are bunches of low lives, talk mean without manners. The manager is always with his mask down but then he goes around telling people to pull up their mask. If you paid ANYTHING in advance forget about the credit back, the pandemic put this business in their knee ( funny part is the owner is filthy rich). We recently joined with a family membership. At $180/month we were skeptical, but so far we love it. The pool is so nice, the cabanas are lovely. They have a brand new pickle ball court, bocce ball, tennis, and more. The exercise equipment is not super new; however, they do the job and there are enough so you don't have to wait. I recently joined, the facilities are very up to date. The staff is very friendly, Robin was the person who showed me around prior to my joining the club. She gave me a fantastic tour, answered all my questions and even gave me schedules for certain programs prior to my joining. Thank you Robin, the fee are very reasonable and I love love love the pool. It is very spacious and they have a great organizational way of insuring everyone has fair use of the pool. Currently it is a bit crowded due to covid restrictions but the staff have done a great job of managing this situation. I cannot say enough about my positive experience here thus far. Looks like they made a desperate attempt at adding pictures a few days after I posted. Be sure to take a good look at the uneven bumpy floors by their "hammer strength" racks. Try out the lifetime fitness equipment feel how uneven every other machine, whether it's the tension in the cables or the worn down handles causing the issues. It looks to me like some pieces of equipment are just held together with makeshift parts from other broken pieces. And they want to try to charge you double what other gyms cost. Been coming here since I was a kid, over 20 years, and I've tried other gyms but there really isn't anything else like Lakeridge around here. They're friendly and this gym is quiet, private and relaxed. Love never waiting for machines or feeling rushed. The teachers and classes are amazing! They also have a great pool. read more

I joined this gym a couple months ago, my mom and dad became members wayyyyy before me and enjoy it a lot. I got the student rate which is 3 months for 160$. although it's a steep price, unlike a lot of gyms this one doesn't charge you extra for classes you may want to take. as long as your a member you have access to ALL amenities and classes at this gym. as far as facilities go, this gym is pretty nice. they have many updated cardio machines, some of them have the TV's! the downstairs cardio room I must say though is quite small, slightly cramped in with machines, especially by the stationary bikes. they do offer all the common machines, treadmill, bike, elliptical, and stair climber. there is an upstairs cardio room that I have not actually used, but I have seen it. it's more common for the elderly people to use because they don't have to listen to the blasting tv (: . the weight room(s) there is two, are quite nice. again, kind of cramped. the machines are pretty modern, but they look slightly older. however they do offer all machines and free weights! this gym also has a very nice pool, that looks maintained very well. personally I have not used this pool, but I will when the weather in the bay is nicer. there's also an indoor hot tub and sauna, also really well maintained facilities. of course there is a ladies and gentlemen locker room, the ladies locker room is very clean, large, and offers many showers along with shampoo and body wash. all in all I'm really glad I decided to become a member here, the staff over all is friendly. the older employees are nicer than the teenagers that work there in all honestly. any el Sobrante local should definitely look into becoming a member to this athletic club! read more

WONDERFUL! And if you are from NYC or LA, it's really cheap. I visited last month and wish I could go there every day for a week. I'm a swimmer and the pool, while too warm, is a dream. So long and deep It's what I call a "country" gym. SBAC used to be like this but they upgraded facilities greatly and now it's not Equinox but it's pretty fancy. The pool is just heavenly, with views of the trees and mountains. I miss outdoor swimming. The steam room is bizarre. It's hot but instead of benches there are these curved white plastic seats that resemble madeleine cookies stuck to the walls. Dry sauna is hot and has views through one side. The locker room isn't fancy but it's okay. There is coffee and they have wine and beer for very little money. It totally reminds me of SBAC, my club 18 years. The yoga room is fantastic. I was alone and did a full hour practice. The machines, both weight and cardio, are good. Lots of parking. I spent three hours here. A highlight of my Bay Area trip. P.S. The yoga teacher is from Chicago. She is trained in ballet and IYENGAR! Rare for a gym outside Equinox and even most Equinox clubs don't have Iyengar-trained teachers. The gym is great although I wish they had newer equipment & machine. For example it will be marvelous if we had: - [ ] "Barbell Pad" would be good to support shoulder - [ ] "Ankle straps" for cable machines to do for Kickbacks, Glute Workouts, Leg Extensions - [ ] "Resistance bands" - [ ] "Multi hip machines" would be great to have. So that people who wants to workout more on there hips or reduce hip dips - [ ] "Hip trust machine" since those workouts are very popular. It would be really helpful to guide you with a machine. Since they're complicated to do them without a machine. - [ ] Last but not least to have another "smith machine" (is really great for beginners or people who doesn't know how to use proper Barbell) because we only have one. Maybe have one of those empty rooms & add them would be wonderful because I feel as a women there's a lot of manly workout machines (there's to many arm, back workouts.) That's probably why there's a lot of man at the gym. A little bit of more glute machines won't hurt. Maybe they would even bring more women to the gym! Other then that Lakeridge athlete's club is great. I just really hope they would consider this advice. read more

It's only fair to give credit where it's due and this place HAS made a major turn around. The womanizing/politalk is at an all time low, the towels are flowing free, and the facilities have been kept up much more consistently than in the past. The location really IS beautiful, and although it is still frustrating to have had certain behaviors ignored and dismissed for so long, it is what it is; and it seems that everybody is just trying their best. I moved to the area in 2001, and I think I joined Lakeridge in 2002. Since then, the "club" has gotten much better over the years. When I first became a member the place was definitely dated and felt like I was in the 70's. But as time progressed they've upgraded and continue to make improvements. The weight lifting equipment is modern Life Fitness with a machine or 2 for every muscle group. They also have a lot free weight, and dumbells. The treadmills and cardio equipment are also new Life Fitness equipment. They also offer yoga, fitness/aerobics, and spin class. The spin bikes are tuned up regularly by the local bike shop here in town. Not to long ago they created a TRX room. I haven't taken the classes, but I use the room and the equipment on my own all the time. The highlight of the "club" is the pool. Heated all year round, plenty of lanes i think 8 plus a large area for non lap swimmers? Summertime is the best because members can hang out all day, bbq, drink beer, etc! Other amenities include raquetball, tennis, massage, childcare, steam room, sauna, and hot tub. They also have events, like wine/beer tasting, member parties,business socials/mixers, the list goes on. It's more than an athletic "club", it's community. Can things be better, well of course, everything can be better. One thing to keep in mind is that Lakeridge is a "club", not a "gym". It's also privately owned, unlike the franchise corporate "gyms" in the area. The best way I can describe the comparison between Lakeridge Athletic "Club" and the franchise "gyms" is Lakeridge is like going to a 5 star restaurant and having a steak dinner with all the fixn's, while the "gyms" in the area are like having a steak and salad bar at Sizzler's. Don't get me wrong, I like Sizzler, but I prefer a nice grass fed steak perfectly prepared with the best ingredients, but hey, that's just me. Are you like me? I've tried to gather information about the club on two occasions; once in person and anther time on the phone at 5:20pm on Monday 8/16/21. Each time was bizarre and confusing because the person who was working and who said they were a manager was evasive and frankly, odd. He didn't seem to know much of anything as it related to the athletic trainers other than two of the three on the website have already left and one is leaving soon. When pressed for information about if there were any plans to hire new trainers he didn't know. When I asked about getting contact info or even a name of someone who would know he hedged and stammered as if there was something to hide. I would love to join this club with my family, but it really has a sketchy or at least an unprofessional vibe. Please keep your website up to date otherwise it comes off as deceptive and please hire people who know how to interact with the public. read more

Everything is great about this place except the piped in music. Fortunately it's only in the locker room. But, the pool, the swimming pool is sublime. Outside, views of tree studded hills (I'm guessing above Kennedy Grove Regional Park), hawks coasting on the wind currents above. During Covid- swimmers get their own lane. **UPDATE 8/15/2014** The club has undergone renovations since I wrote my review over four years ago. For example, the club got a face lift during Spring 2013, and now the showers in the women's locker room are new and updated! New elliptical machines were put in as well. As I am no longer a member here, I can also attest to the hassle-free termination process. I had to end my membership on July 31 because I moved, but the general manager, Bruce, was so good about accommodating my request and even let me stay a few extra days past my "expiration date." He and assistant manager, Robin, have always been so helpful and will do their best to accommodate you and your family's needs. However, you do need to do your part of the termination process and give at least a 30-day written notice, unless you're in one of their specials or summer programs where it might be different. In my 10 YEARS here, membership rates went up just ONCE from $90/month to $95. I paid the monthly $95 for at least seven years; that should say something. I have been a member of Bally (impossible to terminate ethically) and Fitness 19, and have also worked out at Oakwood (Lafayette) and 24 Hour. This place may be more expensive, except for Oakwood, but it doesn't do the termination BS or fee gimmicks that Bally does. My only complaint about the gym is about the summer membership members, who crowd the locker rooms and pool and don't always know the gym etiquette. But they come in after Memorial Day weekend and disappear by Labor Day weekend, and then the regular year-round members have peace again. I made a lot of friends without even trying while I was here, and you will too if you become a regular. **END UPDATE** This is a great place for families, singles, couples, teens, senior citizens, anyone. I've been a member since 2004, but had come as a guest many times before. You want it, you've got it: bikes, cardio, treadmills, stairmasters, weights, sauna, jacuzzi, racquetball, tennis (outside), pool (outside), basketball (outside), personal trainers, and classes. Other features include towel service and child care. Personalized service and very family-friendly. Nice members too. They are considerate of you as you work out (read, they don't hog machines or get in your way while you're trying to exercise). Lots of social events for members and non-members alike like an annual holiday party at Christmas, wine and cheese tasting, and also the annual Lakeridge anniversary party in October. Also lots of children's activities, including summer camp and their own holiday parties, movie nights, and Easter egg hunts. If your gym budget is less than $50/month, this is not the place for you. If I could rank their pricing, they'd get a $$$. However, if you can afford a little more, you'll definitely see a difference in the quality. Also, they are upfront with you and extremely reasonable about membership fees- no sneaky sales gimmicks or gotchas that those inferior cheaper gyms try to lock you into. I joined this gym about six months ago. Since then sauna has broken twice and has been down for More than two weeks at a time. Today I was told they are struggling to figure out what is wrong with the sauna. It almost sounds like they are fixing a spaceship. I even got some of my friends to join because of the amenities. But it doesn't seem that management Cares to fix stuff on time. Also men have to share a large shower, it is extremely uncomfortable to take a shower when guy next to you is scrubbing his balls. As much as i pay, i think i should get a shower curtain. I'd like to go to work right after the gym but I have to go home and shower before I go to work which add 30 minutes to my commute. This gym is not cheap and I can't even get privacy when I shower???? Update: so I addressed my issues with management and they let me out of my contract and I was able to join a gym where I can enjoy a private shower and all the amenities that are promised. But the very upsetting part still is that management did not care to fix those problems they Rather lose customers then address the issues in the club. That speaks volumes for the unprofessionalism and lack of customer service... let's not clean it up let's sweep it under the rug attitude, take it or leave it it is what it is!!! read more

Nice club... pool is always open, no posting pool schedules on my fridge to figure out when I can or can't bring the kids. Nobody fusses about kids using a mask and snorkel in the pool. Other members are friendly. Need to add better parking lot lighting and maybe one of those bathing suit dryers into the bathroom that spin at super sonic speeds... but they do provide plastic baggies which is awesome. I like the fact that it's not right in the middle of other businesses and traffic... just far enough where it's not too far to go, but far enough to keep away any riff raff passing by. And while on that subject... the prices are kind of high, which helps attract a higher quality of people... More professional types with lives that's are not full of drama and craziness, no kids in their underwear swimming in the pool, people who follow the rules and shower off before getting into the pool, no obnoxiously loud people who act like nobody else is around. Okay, let me try this review again, since the first one got yanked. The positive: the outdoor pool ROCKS. It is so, so good. Clean! Lanes for lap swim almost always available when I want to swim. Water temperature is just right--warm in colder months and pleasant in warmer months. I come to Lakeridge to swim, so this is important for me. The "just fine": Locker rooms, cardio and weight equipment. No complaints. The so-so: Some of the staff behind the desk aren't the friendliest. I've been going for two years and one person has yet to smile at me. Maybe I inadvertently killed her puppy, or something like that, but I think I'd remember. (I haven't killed any animals--that I am aware of--ever). I love animals, as pets or for dinner. What else? I love the hot tub after a swim, even though it can smell strongly of chlorine, but I guess that's a given in any public tub. There is one thing that is a pain in the ass, but Lakeridge has no control over it. When you leave the club anywhere around evening rush hour, good luck to you trying to turn left onto San Pablo Dam Road!
