My father in law recently passed away, and my husbands stepmom found an old super 8 reel and a VHS tape as she was going through his things. They weren't labeled so we had no idea what was on them. She sent them home with us and I brought them over to Lakeside Camera Photoworks to be transferred to modern media as we were curious to solve the mystery. It was a lot more expensive than I thought it would be, but turned out to be worth it. The cost to convert all to DVDs and have 3 thumb drives printed - one for each sibling - was $135. The VHS tape was complete in about 4 days, and the Super 8 reel took about a month. The VHS tape must have bern an earlier conversion because it held the Jesuit vs Holy Cross football game played in 1952. There was my father in law on the field in his leather helmet! Next would be the old reel. As soon as I received the call from Lakeside that it was ready, I rushed over. As soon as I returned home we popped in one of the thumb drives, and I watched my husband's face as he was glued to the screen. Low and behold, there were his parents on their wedding day! His mom looking so fresh faced and beautiful, his dad so young and handsome! Then more - his siblings as babies and toddlers through the years, getting smooches and hugs from their mom and being carried away on their dad's shoulders. You see, my husband's mom passed away over 20 years ago and he has missed her terribly. And his dad suffered with Parkinson's for the past 13 years and hadn't been himself in ages. This surprise was so welcome. He's going to surprise his siblings with their thumb drives this week. If you have old film hanging around it might be time to have it converted. If you have little ones this is the BEST place to get seasonal photos done. We have come here for Santa photos 2 years in a row and will never go anywhere else. You schedule your appointment online ahead of time which means no waiting in long lines. We were in and out in 10 minutes. Santa is great and gives the kids a brief one on one attention while the photographer starts taking amazing candid shots. The calm setting is perfect for little kids or any kid who who might get overwhelmed or sensory overloaded with the busy mall atmosphere. With the $49 package you get 2 digital photos and I had 11 photos to choose from. It was so hard to choose because they get such great photos! read more

Once upon a time this store was competitive. Back in the days of film they had a product and service to sell. Now, they are perfect examples of why brick and mortar stores are falling by the wayside. They chided me when I picked up an order saying that it had sat with them for over a month. It had been 4 days and I never received a call. Next order, and final one I might add, was lost completely by the staff at Lakeside. When their one competent employee realized this she attempted to right the wrong by printing the order and having it ready in 45 minutes. When it was picked up, the counter staff accused my wife of ordering an express service and never paying for the prints to be developed. Unknowingly she paid for the prints a second time while, unbeknownst to her, I held the receipt for the "cash sale". This store was once a leader in New Orleans photography. Now they are just incompetent and a shining example of why we will order prints from an online service. They only thing they had to sell was knowledge and customer service... It's obvious they are hiring the "want fries with that" staff now... I'm done. read more

This is more of a print shop. The staff is friendly but young and smirky. If you shoot Nikon go elsewhere. They have nothing in stock for Nikon. I see little reason in going back. They don't supply pro level gear at all. It's all private label promaster. read more

I went into Lakeside the last week of March looking to buy a dSLR. I have known several people who have purchased their cameras from Lakeside and I know of a couple of photographers who use them and are happy with them. So, I went in with high hopes of being sold a wonderful camera that would make me happy. To say I was disappointed is the understatement of the century. The kid who was helping me showed me two cameras, the Nikon D3100 and the Canon Rebel T2i. And that's about where it stopped. He told me a couple things about each but didn't really tell me enough about the cameras to really make me interested in buying either. I knew this was a big purchase and I came prepared. I was able to tell him what was important for me to do with the camera and what wasn't and I still wasn't sold on either. I was their for half an hour and I left. I didn't know the questions to ask and he didn't tell me anything to make me ask questions. I went home to try and figure out which camera to buy. Oh, he did give me a website to use to research the cameras. That didn't help... So, even more confused I went back the next day to ask questions. The kid I had talked to wasn't there so I talked to someone else and was hopeful for more information. I explained everything over again and he didn't help at all. He put the two cameras on the shelf and let me touch them. I asked him to show me the cameras, explain them to me and his response was "When you buy a camera from us we'll show you what you need to know." They also charge $90 and require 3 days to do a sensor cleaning on dSLR cameras. This is not necessary. Bennett's Camera charges $25 and will clean the sensor while you wait. It only takes about 10 minutes. I was really disappointed with my experience at Lakeside. They couldn't, or maybe wouldn't take the time to sell me the camera. I ultimately went to Bennett's and bought my camera there and will never go back to Lakeside. Also, I have purchased a frame and mat from Lakeside to match the frame and mat a friend had purchased my husband and I as a wedding gift. While the girl who helped us mat the picture was helpful, I felt that she wasn't truly interested in helping us get what we want. She walked off to start cutting a mat for us before we were sure what we wanted and ended up going with a different mat. Again, she helped us, but we had to be very assertive to get what we wanted. read more

Not a place for film people. No darkroom stuff, just loads of filters and bags. They do cross process at least but don't do slide or black and white (send out) an they Dont sell film! Regular store Bought film only. Boo! To top it all off they completely screwed up my order. They did not cross process anything, meaning they sent everything out regardless of the notes I left. They called me to tell me my black and white film was finished but I hadn't turned in any black and white. I did ask for negatives only and they managed that one at least. Some places screw up the whole order AND give me prints. Basically someone cant read instructions there so - insist its written in large black marker if you go there. Not a place for professional photographers who use film.. its a place for people who want to print their baby pictures onto canvass. read more

Maybe three-and-a-half stars? This place is ... strange. I went in wanting some photos printed and was assaulted with all manner of BIG COLORFUL SIGNS, printed with commands such as, "SHARE YOUR VISION," "PRESERVE MEMORIES," and "CAPTURE THE MOMENT!" Basically, their store layout is essentially their awful website manifested in physical space. It confuses one needlessly. But the people are helpful and quite nice. The photo printing process is also strange, as it's entirely automated at little workstations. You plug what you want in, print out a receipt, and then take it to one of the strangely labeled kiosks at the front, (I think it's "SHARE YOUR VISION.") Wish I could just tell someone what I want? But they do good printing work (just as good as NOLA Darkroom) at reasonable prices (much less than NOLA Darkroom), so there you go. read more

Went to go get some film developed a while ago and they charged me around $21 which was great because it included negatives, scans, and prints. So I went back about 3 weeks ago, paid the same amount and I expected to get the same products. I went to go pick up my pictures today and was only handed my negatives and scans. The guy at the counter said they stopped doing prints about a month ago. I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS BEFORE I MADE MY PURCHASE. I could've easily paid half what they charged me for what they gave me at another place. I would've never paid that much for just negatives and scans. Then he wanted to charge me an extra $18 if I wanted my prints. Never going back ever again! read more

One of the only places in town that you can purchase camera gear from anymore, but they are salespeople and not photographers which BestBuy even prioritized adding photographers to their photography section. They also really lack an understanding of customer service when it comes to telling you that they have an item in stock and then you drive over an hour to find out they had pulled he wrong item. Of all the dedicated camera shops that i've visited in the area, this is the best. They have a long counter of people helping you choose your future camera. They were pretty busy on a Saturday when I visited, but i was able to find some one who was able to help me find some camera accessories. they have a good selection and wide range. I happily walked away with a nice tripod that didn't break the bank and perfect for an amateur. read more

There is no better place in the metro area to get photos printed. This palces is the best at taking what I see on my computer screen and making it look the same on paper. Don't buy any camera equipment here though, or you'll fork over a leg, a first born child, and both kidney's. read more

The reason I continue to get my prints from Lakeside is because they're cheap and quick. The only problem is that just about every time I go in, they take forever to get to me. I understand that you have to help people that were there before me. But they could at least greet me and say they'll be with me in a minute. Ignoring me is not a good thing to do. We'd heard about Lakeside through contacts in the photo industry. Dave the owner had a great reputation. We buy high end photo equipment from time to time for our business. We look for best price, and credible, expert service. We'd been buying from the big online guys, but really needed better advice on some of the new stuff coming out. So we placed an order with Lakeside. Got solid advice, including full disclosure on some of the warts on certain equipment. Very helpful, expert, hospitable. And the price was totally competitive with the reputable sites out there. We wouldn't have spent tens of $thousands with these guys over several orders if they weren't solid. The quality of the work is decent and the staff is excellent. My problem with Lakeside Camera came from my experience when I had stacks of tapes transferred to DVDs. My credit card was immediately charged even though I was told that the work would not be done for several months. I understand the necessity of getting a credit card number - to protect businesses from consumers who do not pay for work - but this was outrageous. Lakeside had the interest-free use of my $525 for three months, maybe longer My credit card should have been charged when the process began and only then. If you do business with this company, you should make this point clear. If they don't see the consumer's side of this issue, go elsewhere. read more

I puchased my first DSLR today and was so happy with the service. As a first time buyer I had compared many options and was still very unsure about what I wanted. They helped me pick out a great camera, saved me $300 on the lens I wanted by recommending a different option, and walked me through all the technology I needed without making me feel like a novice (which I am). We first stopped at their competitor down the street where I was given two choices of camera (it was all they had left in stock). When I asked where I could go in order to see more camera options, they said they had no idea - they were being forced out of business on cameras because of the manufacturer margins, blah, blah, blah. What they didn't want me to know was that the better store was down the street. Luckily, we went to Lakeside! The staff was friendly, helpful with my questions, and had a great selection. Thanks to Craig for helping me pick out a great camera. I'm looking forward to taking some classes to really get the most out of my camera (also offered at their store). After buying a lens and the body, it was the same price I'd have paid online without the personal assistance. I came here about 45 minutes before closing on a Friday afternoon (May 17) in desperate need of a DVD of images to play a slideshow for a funeral that was scheduled for the next morning (the original DVD we burned wouldn't play in a DVD player). Even though the "video guy" had a day off, the staff here figured it out. They called the video guy, who walked them through the creation of the DVD. It took some time to import all the images and create the DVD, and the staff kept working well beyond the 5:30 p.m. closing time of the store. By around 6:30, I was out of there with a DVD in my hands. Instead of just saying, "The guy who does this isn't working today, sorry," they went well above and beyond, and I really appreciate it. If you're considering going to this place.... Stop!!! Check the prices elsewhere before going there. Their prices are rediculous. I paid $80.00 for a SD Card that I later found on Amazon for less than half that price. I called another camera shop in Jackson, MS and found that the price for the same card was exactly half the price. While I'll admit I should have done my research before buying the card, but some of it comes down to trusting the expert. Looks like Jessica might be on the payroll. read more

Awful customer service. When I re-ordered my macro light and I polietly ask about when it was going to come in.. they told me they JUST PUT IN THE ORDER. 3 days after I went to the store and returned my product. But when I was at the store that day when I returned my product they said the put in a special order and wrote a note on the reciept saying "my manager has to deal with this, i don't know the system at all" They also profiled me and my boyfriend thinking we do not anything about a camera or any camera equipment. They also did not let us know how long it would take for my product to come in. The answer was simply, I don't know or We'll call you. What store that orders expensive camera equipment does not have any tracking information for it. read more

Terrible service! I ordered a couple of Art quality prints which were not cheap from the Northshore location on a rush so I could enter them in a contest the day of their scheduled arrival . After much searching it was found they had been overlooked on the delivery to the Northshore. They nonchalantly told me to come in the next day after I had payed for a rush job. I went to pick up an online print that I ordered, and the Pregnant associate was very helpful. But as I went to check out, the young man that was helping me, didn't know the answers to any of the questions I had. I wanted a price list for the prints, but he told me to take a picture of the sign they had hanging up or go online, why would I go online for a price when I'm right there in the store? He was very rude and kept trying to cut me off and get me over with. I didn't catch their names, but the girl told me that it was her first day, there was also a guy helping. Both of them were very patient and understanding of what I was looking for. I'm not from New Orleans - Son-in-law took super picture of mom with his iPhone - had that ugly eye that the flash from eye phone gives people - expression was perfect, the eyeballs looked ugly - nice lady at Lakeside (apologies, I don't remember your name) treated the order like it was a million dollars, did some electronic artistic magic to make the eyes humane - made a print that will become a family heirloom. These folks know their stuff and they care about their customers. It wasn't a big value order but they didn't let that bother them. Since then have sent orders through their website and had outstanding success, more than fair pricing and very prompt delivery. Can't say enough good things about them. read more

I was doubtful about switching from film to digital, but the good people at Lakeside especially Matthew were so helpful. He showed me many cameras before i decided on a sony mirrorless (they are so light weight)... and I also purchased a Zeiss/sony combo lens which the motor defected while i was out of town. They fixed it under warranty no hassles in less than two weeks. Ive come to rely on lakeside and Matthews help for most of my camera gear lately and have only had the best knowledge and training given. They even set my camera settings up for me to make for easier access while run n gun shooting. I would be lost with out Mathew and the rest of the staff at Lakeside Theirs no better option in town for your camera equipment and training!! Lakeside Camera is absolutely terrible. First of all, they charge an arm and a leg for practically everything and then when you get your order it is never right. Lakeside is all glitz and no substance. I was in there today and I had to wait 15 minutes just to get some attention. Then when a salesperson finally helped me she seemed very grumpy and unhappy to be there. Honestly you might as well go to Walgreens, and least then you won't expect more just to be disappointed. I shop at both Lakeside and Bennett's down the street, but from now on I will only go to Bennett's. I will be sure to tell all my friends and family to do the same. If you want to save time, money and frustration I would avoid this place like the plague. read more
