I came in here for the first time after passing it almost every day (as I live up the hill). I was curious about this place and decided to stop in. The shop owner is super friendly, tuned up my bike on the spot and added the new pedals (old ones broke) in no time. A quick glance around the shop revealed very affordable, good quality bikes and all the accessories anyone who is a casual rider (or commute rider) like I am could need. Still a huge fan of this place. My bike got stolen a few years back, and I no longer work down the street. I moved away clear across town and eventually bought a new bike and I still drove all the way out to Oakland to have it serviced by Charlie even though there are a lot of good bike shops in my area. This is a no-frills bike shop, and is not the kind of place to go for a range of fancy parts. But if you're looking for great bike service, come here. The two guys who've taken care of my bike are both great--always very friendly and knowledgable, and they work quickly. I've come in for simple repairs and they've done them right on the spot, and for not much cash. They also conveniently keep a pump and spare parts right outside the front door if you need 'em. I'm still a bit of a newbie, and they've never been even slightly patronizing. Highly recommended. read more

Charlie is the nicest bike shop owner or mechanic I've ever met. I've been coming here for all my small parts and accessories needs since I moved to the neighborhood over a year ago. Despite the deceptively small size of the shop, they just always seem to have what I need (and less expensive than other shops), from a pair of end caps, to some seriosuly boutique level bottle cages. If I did not enjoy working on my own bikes so much, I would definitely bring them here for work. Shop is super accessible. I only wish they were open on Sundays! read more

Went in to get my wheel rebuilt on my vintage road bike. This place has nice people working there and nice prices. Other shops estimated it at 20% higher than lakeview bicycle and said they couldn't do it for 2 weeks! Charles told me he could have it done on a few days. A few days later (today) I picked up my bike and let me tell you it has never been a smoother ride. I will recommend this shop to all my friends and come back for the next time my bike needs work! read more

I just had my Dahon fold-up bike serviced. Initially i went in with a flat tire but needed a tune up anyway. After a week of leaving my bike there, i called the store on the phone and was told that during a test cycle my handlebar had broken and i would need a new part costing an additional $30. I had no problem with my handlebar prior to this so was a little nervous about paying for a breakage on their time. My husband was not happy either and called the store to discuss. We left it up to them to decide whether to charge for this breakage or not and on collection, i was not charged for that particular breakage. It was unfortunate that there was a breakage on their time and I am grateful to the store for not charging for this. I will definitely use this store again as I feel the owner is responsible and of good character. There is not much of that in this world. Also I can see that he did a great job with the tune-up. read more

Very reasonably priced, and quite knowledgeable. I rolled in wanting to replace my stem and saddle asap. The owner at Lakeview Bicycle was professional and knowledgeable and presented me w/ a couple alternatives for each. After a quick parts swap, I was back on the road w/ a stem and saddle that both add more comfort than before, and at a reasonable price. I highly recommend LB. read more

I have been looking for a good bike shop for months and just happened to notice this place while walking past. The owner, Charlie was there with his wife, baby and dog. all were friendly without the condescension I had received in all of the bike shops I had checked out previously. I was not sure if I should get a new bike, or just get the one I already had fixed. Charlie said that he would look at my bike (an old 70's/80's ten speed I picked up on craigslist without knowing what I was doing) and tell me if he thought it would be worth investing some money in. So I took my bike in a few days later and was assured that my bike could be brought up to par. In just under a week, I had a bike that was running like new. I have to say, that it's nice to go into a bike shop and not be made to feel like I'm not worth their time b/c I'm not a "serious" cyclist. I would recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a bike, or anything related. read more

Charlie is awesome. I came here for a tuneup after I noticed my brake levers and gear shifters weren't working properly, and my wheels needed truing. Not only did he charge $20 less than the closest competitor, but he got it back to me in 2 days. What's even more impressive is when I came back to pick up the bike, he went ahead and installed a new set of pedals that I had purchased, as well as a new seat, free of charge. If you're a casual rider who just needs some basic part/accessory or you just don't know how to change/patch the punctured tube on your hybrid, you'll probably be satisfied. But if you're serious about bikes (read: ride something that cost you more than $300) this is not the shop for you. King Kog, Luckyduck, Montano Velo, Bay Area Bikes.. there are a number of legit shops in Oakland that will provide better service. read more

I bought a new bike from Charlie a couple of months ago. He suggested one that was within my price range and was light enough for me to carry up the stairs. I've been by a few more time since for things that I thought were wrong. Every time Charlie took the time to check it out and make a few adjustments for free. Turns out that most of the time nothing was wrong, I just hadn't owned a bike in over a decade so I was paranoid. The shop is great and the owners are great. The latter, who helped me with my problem, gave off the skeezy car mechanic vibe ("Well if you really want to fix the problem you're going to need this and this as well"). Seemed a tad pricey for what was done and didn't feel well tended to at all. If there was another place closer to my apartment I would go there over this place in a second. read more

I was curious if there were any shops closer to where I live, which is off Park Blvd. I did a search here and the return showed shops on Grand Ave and beyond. Lakeview Bicycle was the closest - Just a couple doors down (or up) from Gold's Gym. Perfect! After reading the positive reviews I already made up my mind to take my bike there for a repair. I'd brought the bike in for Charlie to replace a broken gear cable and it was ready the following day. Everyday since getting the bike back it's been a pleasure riding it - No more riding with just one gear like before. I want to encourage other cyclists reading this (that are living in or around the Lake Merritt area) to make Lakeview Bicycle your primary bike shop and have Charlie take care of your biking needs and to support a LBS that's across from the Lake. read more
