I have no experience…read morewith Ethiopian cuisine, but being a Yelper who's always willing to try something new, I figured, let's go! Lalibela is located on Temple Street in New Haven. Walking inside around lunchtime, there was just one other table occupied. The waitress quickly welcomed us and brought us menus. I'll be honest, I was not sure what anything was in the menu. It is sorted into four sections: appetizers, beef, chicken and vegetarian. I went with something from the vegetarian section and hoped for the best. My friend went with the chicken and beef. Shortly after, our food was brought out to us. There's no utensils, everything is eaten by hand. We received "injeras" these are somewhat similar to crapes, primarily used for scooping and dipping into an assortment of food. You'll have to gain some experience with eating with these, if you're like me you'll pretty quickly land a stain on your garment. We received a basket full of rolled up injeras. Our plates also had a large spread out injeras. There were three scoops of traditional vegetable meals, lentils, split peas and green beans. The servings were very generous. I enjoyed the flavor profiles on all of these. They ranged from mildly spicy to a bit more spicy. Now that I have some experience at Lalibela, next time I'll be able to modify and customize my plate a bit more. I appreciate that there are so many ways to perfect your options at Lalibela, everything is very flavorful and the portions are substantial. It takes a bit of getting used to having no silverware.

Tried the veggie special platter (we were told it was for two people): this was by far the smallest Ethiopian veggie platter I had ever beheld. The veggie and lentil dishes were inoffensive, though the injera was much more tart that I was used to. After finishing our meal, my dining partner and I were still quite hungry, at which point we decamped to a Thai restaurant across the street for tom yum, spring rolls and dumplings. For a platter for two that cost nearly thirty dollars, this should not have been the case. While the restaurant is conveniently located on Main Street with ample parking, I do not intend to return - the food was just about okay and the portions were frightfully small.

From the start, the place is fairly small and the decor is not anything overly special. There is a small bar/counter in the right and a buffet just past that with lots of closely spaced tables and 2 nicer tables that are bench seating. The decor and ambiance is not why you should try this place. The service was also just ok. It was a bit slow with not that many diners but it appeared that there were two people in front end service who also did work in the kitchen and a single chef/cook who just worked in the kitchen. There is a bit of a language barrier/accent in the speech of the servers but they are friendly and helpful. The service was ok, but again not the reason to try this place. The food, yes that is why you should try this place out. The injeera was soft, pillowy and had the right acid notes that I am used to in Ethiopian food. The lentils / veggies were a huge hit for the family, especially the cabbage side and the Misir Wot. The Alcha Kik Wot has never been my favorite and it was ok, but the rest were a big hit. The meats were also popular with the family. The Doro Wat was super flavorful and I'm sure the egg would be a hit for those that like Egg Curries (not our thing). The sauce over that part was thick and very flavorful forward. Our favorite meat dish was the lamb tibs however. Nice and cut small, the flavor was a huge hit for the whole family. As usual with Ethiopian food, the dishes were all served on a single piece of injera with other pieces rolled up around the plate. When we left, there was not a bit of food left on the plate. Another bonus is that it's not too expensive for what you get and is very family / group eating friendly. This is definitely a place to try if you like flavor forward ethnic foods. Parking is easy on the street just outside and it's right next to the inn at Middletown if you're staying in town.

I chose the misir wor (red lentils), shiro (ground chickpeas), gomen (collard greens), tofu tibs, and cabbage carrot dish. The mixture was a good blend of heartier lentils with fresher greens. Each dish had a unique flavor even though they use similar spices. My favorites were the shiro and the tofu tibs. The gomen felt undercooked and could have used more flavor. The portion felt adequate for one person. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes. I liked the flavors and the casual ambiance

Also it's vegan so you won't get your usual meat options. The wine was also disappointing though to be fair I didn't expect too much. Finally, reservations are a pain to make - no one answers the phone or responds to emails and you can't make them online. Fortunately it turns out you don't need one (the place was empty when we arrived for a 12:30pm lunch on a summer Friday). Sadly won't be returning.

After we were seated and given our menus, our server recommended that we start with the Ethiopian Habesha Beer and an order of Sambusas. We decided to try both the beef and chicken Sambusas along with a few Habesha beers. Everything was delicious. If I had to choose a favorite between the two Sambusas, I would definitely go with the beef--it was outstanding. For our main course, we wanted to experience a variety of traditional Ethiopian dishes, so we followed our server's recommendation and ordered the Beef Tibs, Doro Wot, and an assortment of traditional vegetables. All I can say is WOW! The aroma, flavor, and presentation were incredible. Every bite was packed with flavor, and we enjoyed the meal so much that we couldn't stop eating. The Injera was soft, fresh, and the perfect complement to every dish. After dinner, we moved on to dessert and ordered Baklava, cake, and traditional Ethiopian tea. Once again, everything exceeded expectations. The tea, in particular, was amazing. The aroma alone was unforgettable, and the flavor was unlike anything I had experienced before. If you're local to New Haven, Connecticut, or simply passing through, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. It offers a wonderful dining experience and an authentic taste of Ethiopian cuisine. One thing that disappointed me as a Yelp reviewer was noticing that another nearby restaurant appeared to be using photos of Habesha Ethiopian Restaurant & Bar's food on its own Yelp page. I believe honesty and authenticity are important, and that kind of practice would discourage me from supporting that business. For anyone looking for an excellent international dining experience, I highly recommend Habesha Ethiopian Restaurant & Bar, located at 46 Whitney Avenue in New Haven, CT. This was my personal experience and opinion, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As always, enjoy your culinary adventures, and don't forget to tip your servers! Cheers Everyone
