We ordered the Poon Choi for 2 people for Chinese New Year given its covid season and we can't gather in person. Poon Choi is a giant bucket of food that comes with soup to be added and the bucket is placed over a heating source, like a portable stove, to keep the food warm as you work your way through the enormous variety and quantity of food. It came in a large metal bowl with tons of stuff. Fresh seafood on top includes shrimp, sea cucumber, abalone, dried scallops, fish maw. Meats include roasted duck, soya sauce chicken braised pork knuckles, braised pork belly, pork skin. Other proteins include deep fried tofu pockets and crab balls. Vegetables include Chinese mushrooms, nappa, Chinese celery, broccoli, black fungus, water chestnut, white radish. I feel like everything was cooked perfectly. All of the seafood was cooked well, nothing over cooked. The meats were perfect as were the veges. I actually think that if you boil the broth for too long, you run the risk of the veges getting too soft. The soup seems little but that's because the metal bowl is so filled with food that you really don't need much broth. The seafood sauce is a thicker sauce which I actually felt wasn't really needed but I could see the appeal. The portion is massive! I'm pretty sure the 2 person portion could have fed 4 people as we definitely only made our way halfway and that is literally the only thing we ate that night. Plenty of food for the next day. I will note that they wisely have a wooden kind of netting at the bottom to prevent any of your food from burning at the bottom in case you boil out all the broth. Dessert was mochi cakes with red bean inside. The darker more cooked one had a great texture with more crispy and chew but not as flavorful. The one that want as cooked had a distinct coconut flavor. Both have good unique texture that comes with a mochi cake/tart. A perfect way to end an enormous meal. Price: $68 for 2 person portion (which I will remind you is soooo much food) with a 20$ deposit for the metal bowl. Totally worth it for a special meal and the variety! Also given the quantity, I can't complain. Prices increases roughly by 60-70$ per 2 people portion. 10 person portion is $298 - if anyone gets that size please post it because I'm so curious to know just how huge that is compared to what we got.
