It was so comfortable we literally looked it up to see if we could buy one for our house. The room was very cute, the AC got wonderfully cold, and we really appreciated having a mini fridge and microwave. But IMO there were a few practical misses: our fridge never really got cold, the AC rattled loudly at night, the hair dryer was old, the room was surprisingly dark and spooky, and we missed some basic amenities that you might expect at this price point like: luggage racks, robes, tissues, bottled waters, pen & paper, room service, turndown service, etc. None of these are dealbreakers on their own, but together they made the room feel a little less comfortable than the beautiful design would suggest. Our biggest issue was that our room was directly next to the freeway, which made us feel a little uneasy as two women staying alone. We actually parked farther away near the clubhouse rather than right outside our room because it felt more secure. Overall, the best parts for us were the gorgeous design, manicured grounds, delicious food, beautiful pool and clubhouse, river access, proximity to Gruene, and the super comfortable bed. There's definitely a lot to love about the property!

Hacienda Del Rio is only about an hour from home, but it felt like a complete reset. Being right by the river was so peaceful, we spent time paddle boarding, hanging out by the pool, and just slowing down for a bit. I also loved that they're pet-friendly and so accommodating throughout our stay. The rooms were super clean and each one had its own unique style, which made it feel even more special. Definitely adding this to my list of places I'll keep coming back to.

Breakfast each day was divine and the adjoing bar, Tavern In the Gruene, was an experience unto itself. When we left, we were already planning a trip back in the fall.

Wonderful breakfast, and again, Edgar was present and ensured top-notch conditions in the dining area. I observed families eating and enjoying their breakfasts in a very comfortable split dining area. Wonderful grounds for children to roam and play area. And the property has a new pool to cool off in and wear out the children before bedtime. I'll come back and revise this review when I have more time, but suffice it to say, you will not find a cleaner more luxuriously appointed cottage/suite than that of Gruene Homestead Inn. We stayed there from Thursday April 23rd - Sunday April 26th 2026. It was like living in an Italian Villa and you would be hard pressed to find a more gracious host and chef than Justin anywhere ! He's been doing this for over twenty years ! We arrived at the Lakehouse around 3:00 pm and were immediately welcomed by Justin who carried our bags to our upstairs Medici Room and gave us a tour of the house. Justin also provided us with excellent tips on things to see and do in the area, as well as suggestions for restaurants for lunches and dinners. Thursday evening, we ate dinner on the outside patio of Gennaro's Trattoria where we enjoyed their Authentic Italian Kitchen. Friday morning, we enjoyed a delicious omelet breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room overlooking Canyon Lake and great conversation with other guests. Following breakfast, we took a leisurely drive down River Road to the quaint town of Gruene (that's pronounced "Green"). There, we had lunch at the Gruene River Grill, followed by a relaxing stroll through the many antique and boutique shops in Gruene, and a visit to Gruene Hall, Texas' Oldest Dance Hall. We then returned to Canyon Lake and enjoyed some merlot wine and cheese and crackers (which we had brought with us) on the Lakehouse's covered outdoor patio overlooking Canyon Lake. We had dinner at Canyon Lake's Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Grill which offers a full menu. On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a delicious Belgian waffle breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. Following breakfast, we drove to the town of Blanco and visited Arnosky's Flower Farm. After walking around the beautiful flower fields, we bought some beverages and snacks inside Arnosky's barn and sat in the chairs on the barn's covered back porch patio overlooking the flower fields, humming bee feeders, and bird feeders. You could sit there a long time as the scene is ever changing. From Arnosky's, we drove to Tillman's Cabin Resort in Blanco and ate lunch at the Rio Blanco Café overlooking the Blanco river. After lunch, we drove to the original 1885 Blanco Court House in downtown Blanco where we took a leisurely self-guided tour of the courthouse. We also visited Blanco's many antique and boutique shops. Saturday evening, we attended the 4 pm mass at Canyon Lake's St. Thomas The Apostle Church. At the end of mass, we witnessed one of their congregants step up to the lectern with the pastor's approval, talk about what the bible says about a wife, ask the lady in the front row next to us to step forward, and then bent down on one knee and asked her to marry him in front of the entire church congregation, and she said "YES" and they kissed. What a beautiful proposal ! Following mass, we had dinner on the outside patio of Canyon Lake's Elio's Osteria e Pizzeria. On the evening drive back to the Lakehouse, we saw lots of white tail deer in the neighborhood. On Sunday morning, we enjoyed a delicious scone and quiche breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. We again enjoyed conversing with the other guests as we had every day, and then we packed and headed home. Sorry for the length of this review but my wife and I thought readers might enjoy hearing about what one can do from The Lakehouse Bed and Breakfast at Canyon Lake. The Lakehouse is centrally located in the Texas Hill Country and opens this area up to you like a box of chocolates!

After giving me a choice of two rooms, and recommending one in particular (which of course I chose), the reservation person required that I give her my credit card number, date of expiration, security code, my billing address, my email address and also my cellphone number. A few hours later I got an email from her saying that she'd made a mistake and that the rooms she'd described were in fact not available; but that for an extra $50 I could rent a very nice suite that was indeed available. I wrote her back and said that I was disappointed and extremely concerned that she'd required me to give her all the above confidential information for nothing, and that I thought the most fair thing was that they just allow us to stay in the suite she was now saying they had available, but that we shouldn't be charged more. After a couple of days she wrote back to say that she'd talked with the owner and that the owner would not do that; so I could either pay the $50 more or they wouldn't help me. Now . . . you decide. What's the right name for this place? "Prow'd?" Me thinks not (as in Yelp's 1 star "Eeks, me thinks not"). How you treat people matters. Maybe 20 years ago this "Prow'd House" could unprofessionally treat its customers and no one would know. But times have changed and how you treat people these days can become a more public fact. We stayed in two of the large "tents" and one of the smaller cabins. It has a wonderful rustic flair to make you really feel like you've gotten out of the big city, but still comfortable enough with the temperature controlled setting and the wonderful mattresses to make sure you're well rested. They have a variety of things in a large plot of land, including a river you can swim in, various trails to take your golf carts around so you can see a variety of wildlife, including deer and armadillos, a very nice pool and hot tub with a full bar right next to it, and other small things, including a cornhole set and a Pickleball court. What I think blew me away, though was the incredible hospitality of those who worked there, they were genuine interested in making sure that we were as comfortable and happy as possible, and the very delicious breakfast that they made for the house, the pond request. Whether you're with the family, having a romantic getaway, or just simply wanting to enjoy the beauty of the Hill country, I cannot recommend this location enough.
