Membership shopping has heavily impacted the way Filipino families do their groceries. For now, the most prominent stores that cater to this are S&R and Landers Superstore. There isn't much any difference between the two stores, Landers for me is more ambient than S&R. I really loved their homey and cozy feel, the green/light brown motif made it look modern, clean and contemporary. Parking space is very abundant, whenever we visit Landers the place seems to be uncrowded.

I've been going to S&R for years so this review will be more of a comparison between S&R and Landers. LOCATION Coming from Makati, I find Landers Otis not very easy to get to. The reason why it took me this long to get there is it seems like the target market of this warehouse membership club is only the people living in Paco, Manila. If you don't know the schedule of the truck ban, good luck to you. Huge container trucks crawl by and block the entrance of this place. And it's not just one or two trucks but a procession of trucks from as far as the South Super/Osmena Highway probably trying to get to the piers of the Port of Manila. ATMOSPHERE/AMBIANCE Once inside the compound, things look so much better! Lots of parking slots available (more than any S&Rs) probably because cars weren't able to get in, thanks to the trucks. Aisles are so much wider here that I didn't mind pushing around their extra large shopping carts. It's clean and there's no funny smell in the air. STAFF What I noticed is some of their staff tend to stand in the middle of aisles staring at empty space, blocking everyone's path. Lander staff moves slower than S&R's and everyone seems to be just hired this week. If you have questions for them they just stare at you sometimes with their mouths open until you finish composing your question. Really it was like that on the day I was there and that kinda annoyed me. I had to remind myself that this place is new vs S&R which has been around for more than 10 years. PRICE When it comes to chocolates you might find some good deals like with Hershey's Kisses. Nuts are also cheaper! Landers seems to have more items on retail sizes/packaging whereas S&R usually has industrial sizes like Costco. Landers has a smaller version of Nathaniel's ice cream while S&R only carries the huge ice cream tub from Nathaniel's. MEAT SECTION I usually replenish my fresh meat at home by visiting S&R every 1-2 weeks. I'd usually get country style pork ribs and lechon kawali cut pork. They weren't available at Landers. Lander's fresh meat section seems to be much smaller than S&R's. I think the same goes for the fresh fruits and vegetable section. I got 2 packs of their ready to cook sisig and found out they've been already seasoned (translation: salty) which could be ok if eaten with more than the usual amount of rice. CHEESECAKE FACTORY Both places have frozen Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes. S&R has the bigger flatter ones while Landers has the smaller but fatter ones. They're priced the same and I suspect they weigh the same, too. We bought a frozen cheesecake before and it's really inconvenient thawing the pre-sliced cheesecake, it's not like you can just throw it in the microwave oven. They take hours to thaw! S&R in their deli section has ready to eat cheesecake which I didn't find at Landers. GASOLINE They have caltex inside and you get a discount from being a member ala Costco. The discount is about 2 pesos per liter but I think there was a promo when I was there and the discount was 3 pesos per liter for gasoline. I'm not sure how much of a big savings this is but since you drove all the way to get here, might as well get your gas here. Will I come back? Probably during the next holiday when it's easier to drive there. Most of the basic stuff (meats, etc) I could easily get from S&R Fort Bonifacio so there's really no compelling reason to drive all the way to Paco, Manila with all those trucks on the road. I'm giving this place 4 stars because of so much space between aisles, it's clean and plus they have stuff that S&R doesn't which gives us shopper more options. I think that they can even coexist in the same area and not affect each other's sale that much. If only they opened here in Makati where there's no S&R...

This branch is in a really convenient location and is maintained well. The people who work here are also super nice! I bought my birthday cake (the Purple Carousel chocolate cake) here, and they gave me an extra bag of sweets! My favorites are their: *Lemon bars - really great lemon flavor and have a tart, refreshing sweetness *Chocolate revel bars - probably the best I've had *Chocolate Campfire cake - very rich, but in this amazing way where you don't get tired of eating it! I've also had their: *Purple Carousel chocolate cake - classic chocolate cake with these chocolate wafers on top *Mini Pecan Pie - not the consistency I prefer in a pecan pie but the flavor was still very good *Mini Chocnut Pie - light, could use a stronger chocnut flavor, I really liked the crust though *Cookies - I love cookies so I usually get 1 or 2 with whatever else I'm buying that day, theirs are crispy on the edges and chewy on the inside *Quiche Tinapa - Liked this a lot and just ate mine chilled, but I think it would be better to warm it a little at home

But Purple Oven's decadent revel bars changed that opinion pretty quickly! When I moved to the area, I was happy to find out that it's just one tricycle ride away from my condo (and I've abused that ever since). It's always been my go-to bakery for special occasions. Of course, the revel bars are always a party hit, as well as their cakes. But I think their cookies are one of the best I've tasted! (And i've tried alot, mind you.) The chocolate macademia cookies don't scrimp on either, and is absolutely mouthwatering, especially when they're just fresh out of the oven! (You can cheat this by putting it in the oven really quickly, at the lowest setting so you won't burn anything.) Purple Oven doesn't just do desserts either! They've got a pretty good selection of bread and quiches! Perfect for a lazy brunch at home. Just pop em in the oven the next day, and they go so perfectly with some coffee or tea.

I love everything about that place, I could really spend hours just smelling their food and staring at their desserts. And it doesn't help that they actual load a new batch of goodies in the oven every hour (with a schedule posted on the chalkboard of what's cooking by what time), I think I sat there for half a day and didn't even notice I've been there that long. Whether you're in for a savory treat or a sweet-tooth satisfier, they have so much to choose from. My top picks are still Grandma's Chocolate Cake which has layers of caramel between moist, rich chocolate cake topped with chocolate ribbons and the Banoffee Pie which has a pie crust filled with banana, cream and butterscotch. If you want just a quick bite, then try their cookie selection. I love the chocolate macadamia, very chocolatey and chunky and not too sweet.

I grew up a few kms from this Becky's, and went to high school nearby. We sometimes would beg and plead with our bus driver (who shuttled kids to and from school like a regular dude) to stop by here before our trip home so we can buy some snacks. I'd like to think he did at one point but I don't think he ever did. haha. We did come by with my folks and ended up with some of their goodies. My mom likes anything with nuts (walnuts, pecans) , and naturally, I hated them. But anything Becky's Kitchen makes is rather sumptuous and I, uhh, pretty much devoured them all. I haven't been back to this location since coming back to the country, but I went to the Pasig one. As a medical student, heading to a new coffeeshop or cafe is the perfect way to jumpstart productivity and combat the stir craziness associated with being hunched over the same desk, every. single. day. That can lead to some coffeeshops being noisier than others, and not necessarily being a beacon of productivity. Mr. Park's is perfect for studying! The location isn't in Robinsons Magnolia, but rather is in the arcade of stores beneath The Magnolia Residences facing the green area of the mall, making it both accessible but also secluded. Perfect for uninterrupted time to focus, or a place to get away from the bustle of the mall. The ambiance is really good too. Great, bright lighting and spacious tables make getting work done super easy. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating! Food isn't bad either. I normally get their Americano (P80), and for the price, it's huge! The ice cubes made of coffee they include are also a great touch, and make it an even better value for a quick caffeine fix. Pastries are the name of the game here. I am personally a fan of their croquettes, egg tarts, and cream puffs. I'd pass on the scones, though. They were too dry and flavorless for me. They also offer bingsu. I've had some of a friend's and it tasted pretty good, with the ingredients looking fairly fresh. They're also a lot cheaper than the baked goods that you would find at Starbucks of Coffeebean. Oh, and they're open 24 hours a day!! It's amazing. I love this place. Upon entering, you can definitely smell the fresh goodies they bake there and their options aren't just limited to breads alone. In fact, Formosa also sells a variety of pies, cakes, mini cakes, and delicious pastry items with toppings. Their neat display and the super cute presentation of the pastries and cakes will make you want to pick up almost everything on the shelf and make a run for it. If you're lucky, they also have a bread sale near closing time, so plan your Formosa trip accordingly. One of my favorite pastries from Formosa is their Cream Cheese Bread. It's a great match with your morning coffee and the size of the pastry itself is pretty large. The bakery also did a fantastic job in making sure the portion of the filling is generous and it is. Another thing that I love about their baked goodies is the way they present the food so it's more appealing to the eyes. This Cream Cheese Bread has a large star stamped on top - and even their other baked goodies like the floss is nicely displayed on top of the pastry. Their cakes are okay, I think it depends whether you like your sweets super sweet or not. I like mine in between, and I think their Chocolate Strawberry Mini Cake is just right for those who don't really have a sweet tooth. The little square cake is very nicely presented - it has layers of chiffon, strawberry mousse and chocolate, garnished with a nice piece of chocolate with printed stars. The taste however, was okay for me but the cake was super pretty.

But those in the know will almost always say that there's a place in Palanca Street connecting Sta Cruz to Quiapo that has the best hopia in the planet, if not the universe. That place is Kim Chong Tin Hopia Factory. Decades ago, when i went to the Quiapo and Sta Cruz area fairly regularly, I remember going to Palanca Street to get my hopia fix. There were several stores competing back then, but now it is this one that has survived. I'm sure that this was one of the bakeries where I went to. In a recent visit to Quiapo, I bought a pack and am happy to report that the taste hasn't changed, It's still as delicious as ever. This factory also has other products, but I didn't care to try any of them. A pack of seven pieces goes for P37, so that's a little over P5 per piece. Not a bad price considering the size. There's another place I buy hopia more frequently because its easily accessible, and their hopia goes for P8 per piece of similar size. So considering its price advantage, I will agree that Kim Chong Tin's hopia continues to set the standard by which all other hopias are measured. The place doesn't look like much, but it still gets five stars from me.
