It is thanks to her that our garden is a delight from the moment the snows melt - all the way into the late fall when colors change, leaves fall and nature rests. It is no great achievement to have a wonderful garden when there is space to show off plants, shrubs and trees - together with an open ended bank account facilitating experimentation and much help. In the 18th century some of the grand British country houses had 250 gardeners on their payroll, working from morning till night - taming nature in the process. The alternative is to do what Monet accomplished in Giverny - allowing nature to run riot. Carol by contrast treats each plant as if it were a separate being - which it is, resulting in plants that are grateful for her attentiveness who in turn behave themselves. The ones that are stressed get help - a delight to look at . The flowers as a result seem to bloom almost forever and often spectacularly so. Another headache in our backyard has to do with an apartment house that eats up most of the sun that would otherwise illuminate our plot - thus making plant selection problematic. Again, because of Carol's good sense, knowledge, experience and patience - what does get planted is likely to thrive under these rather problematic conditions. With wonderful results. We have many hostas, in several varieties, because they tolerate shade... a delight throughout the season. As well as other plants like hibiscus bushes, including the recently popular variety whose flowers are almost the size of dinner plates. Native plants like long blooming panicle hydrangeas and berry-bearing viburnum shrubs, tall rudbeckias and bugbane attract pollinators and friendly birds, even here in the heart of a city. Other patches of color and variety come from some of the annuals which Carol persuades into bloom continuously. In places where it has proved hard to grow anything, baskets full of begonias or impatients or various creepers provide color and variety. In short, though it would take a visitor about ten minutes to go from one end of our garden to the other - an attentive person could spend much more time examining the happily growing denizens and relishing their beauty. THANKS ENTIRELY TO CAROL LUNDEEN

It took me a long time to find the right type of native plant expert and environmentally-minded gardener that I was searching for, but Carol fit the bill perfectly. I feel very fortunate to have found her. Carol helps manage and maintain the Conservation Commission's new native plant gardens at the Lane Learning Center conservation area, on North Street. The Commission created the gardens (1) to educate residents about native plants' crucial role in the natural web of life, and (2) to showcase how beautiful our native plants actually are. Our gardens were planted in a former farmhouse's yard, which was completely overgrown with invasive plants and vines. Keeping invasive weeds from taking over our newly created gardens seemed like an impossible task, but thanks to Carol's hard work and perseverance, our gardens are now absolutely beautiful. Visitors will often tell us how much they enjoy visiting our beautiful gardens, which wouldn't have been possible without Carol's TLC. If you are searching for a local "native plant and pollinator geek" (as Carol puts it), who cares deeply about the environment and has the knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm that can help you transform your yard into your own nature preserve, I highly recommend Carol. You are sure to love Carol's environmentally-friendly approach to design, planting and maintenance!
