I came to live in Kauai when I was 8 months pregnant with my second daughter- I was freaked out about getting a new Obstetric doctor. I had a c-section previously with my first daughter. This is a big surgery and quiet scary to me because there are so many layers that they need to take time in sewing back up. Dr. Littler, upon my second c-section, removed excess scar tissue from my first c-section. She is highly respected here on the island. I was referred to her by a friend on this island as I was scared to get a new OBGYN so far into my pregnancy. She is a very forward, humorous and engaging doctor- clearly an expert in her field.

I have since seen her and her Nurse Practitioner and been more then comfortable to go go regularly instead of skipping a year or two ;) Now that I am pregnant I knew I wanted Dr. Littler to be my OBGYN, however, I discovered that when you go for prenatal at KMC you rotate between the 4 doctors so that whoever is on call when you go into labor is the one that delivers your baby. Unfortunately one bad apple spoils the bunch and I'll be seeking care elsewhere as I no longer trust this clinic after symptoms of walking pneumonia were missed as the focus was a patient admonishment for not following up on referrals. Who works for who?? I thought medical staff were there for compassionate and ethical care of patients. Apparently not; as nurse Penny seems to be  running the show.

He took the time to explain her symptoms, the possible causes, and why he was recommending each medication, making sure we understood everything before starting treatment. A couple of days later, my husband developed painful bumps after snorkeling off the Nā Pali Coast. Dr. Sparks was able to diagnose it from photos as a Portuguese man o' war sting. My niece had the same reaction, and he helped her as well. Once again, he took the time to educate us about the local marine life, the toxins involved, what symptoms to watch for, and how the prescribed medications would help. I especially appreciated how thoughtful and cautious he was with the medications he prescribed. What really sets Dr. Sparks apart is that he truly cares. He reminded me of the kind of village doctor everyone hopes to find--knowledgeable, compassionate, reassuring, and willing to spend the time you need. His mobile service was incredibly convenient. Both my daughter and my husband felt noticeably better very quickly. If you're on Kauai and need medical care, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Sparks.
