The care at Wilcox is exceptional. One Phlebotomist especially deserves praise. Her name is Jessica. She was very attentive and caring. Great Team at the phlebotomy department. Wilcox emergency department. Great nurses and staff. Nurse practitioners are doing the best they can. Overall a great facility. Third floor department was excellent. All amazing nurses. Very smart and caring. Very knowledgable and took the time to explain things to me in a way that made sense. Great food, very CLEAN. Wilcox has intensive and thorough care. Thank you for caring for me, I am glad that I was able to receive care and that I am at home now getting better. read more

Day Two of vacation and an unplanned trip to the ER and an overnight stay. Oh boy. The ER was fast and efficient. If we were home we would have been in the waiting room longer than it took for the whole works and admission. The nurses and doctors had great bedside manner. Even though we're tourists we were treated well. My only complaint is the on-site pharmacy. Apparently the pharmacy tech doesn't understand how hospitals work. She thought someone being discharged could show ID from their room? Also thought maybe an extra 2 hours driving would be more convenient for us. Not sure how a retail pharmacy with no other patients needs 45 minutes to count some pills. I'd take away a star or two for this. However, the other staff were so good, they didn't need or deserve a poor review. read more

What's hard about Kauai is that there are only hospitals. So take what I say with a grain of salt, but this is my experience. In general to protect people's personal health information, Wilcox I believe tries their best to service their patients. I'd give them 5 stars for the cleaning staff. They're thorough, timely, and consistent. The charge nurses that I've interacted with are also 5 stars- I hear their care and concern, with their willingness to assist/address any issues with quality of care. Now, the RNs and the Nurses Aids, this is where they lost stars and I actually don't blame the individual because I know they have a lot on their plate, BUT I encountered two RNs that were condescending and was like, "whatever" when I asked for clarification of why certain things were done. I get it, they're tired and probably overworked, but people's family members are ill and potentially dying- have a heart. There was one RN that was AMAZING. His name is Vince and he cared. He communicated well, was always there to help and assist. I was happy when he was assigned to our room. Now, there are other comments about doctors not being accessible- I found that is true with the specialist. I assume it's because they don't have many of the specialty types, but because of the doctor not being accessible it delayed care and caused unnecessary restrictions on food and water intake as they tried to figure out what they wanted to do. I do appreciate that the doctors confer with each other and out of the 3 doctors I appreciate the Radiologist for their person-centered approach to care. If I could, I'd give another half star for the radiologist. read more

RUDEST WOMAN EVER! We keep getting messages from a Dr. Ross' office. I tried THREE TIMES today to call back to let them know they had the wrong number. The VERY RUDE WOMAN who answered the phone kept arguing with me - and HANGING UP on me! Sorry, GRUMPY WOMAN....but I was merely trying to let Dr. Ross know his office HAD THE WRONG NUMBER. Wilcox needs to record their operator calls. No one should just hang up on a person who is merely trying to let them know they received the wrong number! I become very ill in 2004 when Big Island's Kilauea Volcano erupted leaving me with a very, very difficult time breathing. It was a typical Monday-so I thought . . . I had to go to Wilcox Hospital Emergency Room across the street from the VA Hospital. It was a holiday and to my dismay, the VA Medical Outpatient Clinic was closed for the holiday. I walked into the Emergency Department. Not one patient was in the waiting room. I walk up to the check-in window, show the nurse my VA Health Card, told her the VA Clinic across the street was closed, she nodded and smiled, "Have a seat. The doctor will see you now." What? The doctor will see me right now? This is the Emergency Room! You're supposed to wait for HOURS on end! Not this Emergency Room! This HOT male doctor walks up to me and says, "Can't breathe, eh? I'll fix you right up, so come with me, ok?" I was in heaven realizing how HOT my doctor was despite my difficulty breathing. Doctor gives me a shot on my butt. I am feeling a vibrant buzz now-smiling. The Doctor says to me, "You should be breathing very well in about oh-5 minutes, ok? You can pull your knickers up. You're finished so, go to the nurse and get your prescription of Prednesone. Please read the directions very carefully on the medicine bottle. The dosage is quite strange, but it is meant to be taken in this specific manner, ok?" Quite the British gentleman and very expedient with his treatment, too. Five minutes later, I was breathing very well. I was elated I only spent a total of 15 minutes at Wilcox Hospital for my difficulty breathing. Next visit-September 2007, I jarred my back from riding on Kauai Sea Tours. I went to the VA Clinic this time across the street from Wilcox Hospital. I went to the VA Registration window and handed my VA card to the medical receptionist. The medical receptionist said to sit down and the doctor will be right out to see me. Right now? The female doctor called me into her office, gave me a shot of Torodol, and gave me a bottle of Naproxen for my muscle back spasm. It took me 10 minutes from the time I walked into the clinic and I was out of there in TEN! WOW!!!! I am soo happy I can breathe and I am not in pain either! read more

I worked there in the past as a Nurse during a short contract and would definitely recommend this facility. This was one of my favorite of hospitals I worked at during the pandemic. They cared for their patients like family. When staff work well together our patients get excellent care. I would definitely want my family go to Wilcox if sick or in need of testing and be cared for by your excellent knowledgeable staff. read more

My second day on Kauai, I had a severe migraine attack and had to go to the hospital. I cannot say enough about Dr. Erik Schumacher and the rest of the staff that took such excellent care of me on 5/18/22. I greatly appreciate it while such a long way from home and while on vacation. Although it was not what I planned. LOL. They even called me a taxi to take me back to the condo I was staying at. Mahalo is not enough. read more

Waited in the ER for four hours. I told the doctor that I was taking a blood thinner. Doctor didn't tell me to stop taking blood thinner. Result was that a hematoma developed into a major internal bleed. Five more hours in the ER a few days later and three nights in the hospital. The bleeding resolved without surgery. Doctors come and go, are not reachable and do not report to the family. Although some of the doctors seemed competent they are not responsive or professional in delivering information. Not a good experience. Someone in authority needs to have serious talk with the doctors about responsible professional behavior. read more

While I didn't mistake it for Johns Hopkins, I felt like the staff truly cared and did their best to take care of us, and helped my wife get better. Triage nurse Heather is rude, didn't ask questions whatsoever or look at my check in. Was loud and obnoxious, (I came in with a 5 day migraine and I have an autoimmune issue so it's alarming), shouting instead of speaking and just barking commands at me. Before I had a chance to say a word she told me as a "courtesy", (that's what they are calling it), "people have been waiting for two hours so you will be out there for a while and we also don't have any rooms open". Firstly I didn't ask and secondly that's horrible bedside manor. If saying that rudely with an attitude because her day is tough and she thinks that's a good way to start triage, then I don't know what to say? It actually made me feel scared and uncomfortable given they had no idea what was going on with me. My brain could be hemorrhaging but hey, I'll be hanging out for 2 hours or more in the waiting room, so that's really comforting. I came in with a temp of 95.0, extremely weak, having trouble with my legs, felt achy, and sick/dizzy even moving and this woman grabbed my arm like I was a rag doll to put a blood pressure cuff on me. I have an autoimmune issue and other health issues but I'm not old and don't look sick so of course that's how she treats me. I know she's supposed to have pulled up my information and at least glance through to see my history, so either she did and she doesn't care, or she didn't because she doesn't care, either way? So I told her to take this sh!t off of me, I'm getting out of here! I've never gotten such an angry burst of energy. I personally don't deserve to be talked to that way or handled that way. Triage is supposed to look at your check in and history, get your vitals, ask you what's been going on, and access the situation to see where to place people and who has a more urgent situation. How can you tell someone they are going to be waiting a long time if you have no idea what's going on? This hospital has made extremely poor decisions on my previous experiences here as in choosing the wrong treatments, wrong diagnosis, etc... So I'm certainly not going in starting off like that when I already don't trust them fully as it is! Zero bedside manor isn't going to make me trust going in there so at this point I'll take my chances. The supervisor came out at one point and basically told me that even if I come in on an ambulance, that they would put me in the front waiting room of the ER, which is really petty and even at this point they had no idea of what was wrong with me. Plain old petty. Clearly the choice to put him as a supervisor was another great decision made at Wilcox. Literally disgusted by the experience. read more

Literally the rudest most unhelpful people on earth every time I have to call for anything. I've had people try to refuse making me appointments even though I had proper referrals and the Doctor in that department requested to see me asap because I was a high risk patient, been refused requesting a call back from the on call nurse and told just to go somewhere else, and hung up on. I'm always kind even though I am hardly ever met with the same decency. I avoid this place like the plague, only call when I absolutely have to and I still regret it every single time. I guess they get away with it because we have no other options on the island but it's unacceptable and honestly negligent. read more

WILCOX HOSPTIAL - shame on you losing valuables of the Deceased. I was visiting from California with my frail Auntie and best friend in Lihue, Kauai when my aunt suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Wilcox Hospital Emergency. Before collapsing, she was fully dressed ready to embrace the day. Routinely, she dressed herself with her bright printed blouses, her Hawaiian heirloom diamond ring, cluster diamond ring, watch and a pair of earrings. Both her diamond rings were gifts from late husband before his passing more than 21 years ago. These rings not only carried sentimental value but also a cash value of $4,050.00. The Hospital failed to complete their document of the PATIENTS PERSONAL EFFECT CHECKLIST . As we recovered her bagged personal items her valuable rings and watch were missing. We asked to see the see the checklist and it was nowhere to be found and missing just like her diamond rings and watch. I am writing this to warn unsuspecting family of patients to remove any valuables of your sick love ones prior to going to Wilcox Hospital/Emergency. It might get lost and nowhere found. This incident is unacceptable since we all go to the hospital to be medically cared for and should not have to worry about losing/taken valuables. Kauai is a beautiful island with beautiful and humble residents. My best friends and Ohana live here. This incident at the Wilcox hospital left an awfully bad impression and bad experience of a place that is supposed to help the sick. My Aunt had passed away in the hospital and although the nurses on the 3rd floor were great and caring. The fact still remains that we came home without her sentimental valuable rings which makes grieving more difficult. While it's never fun getting sick on vacation, this ER here was great. Came in around 7am on a Friday. The ER was empty - 0 people waiting! Once you are admitted, your assigned 1 doctor, 2 nurses and 2 assist nurses. And, the nurses come in every half hour to check on you (or sooner if necessary). Everyone was really nice and comforting. 2 days later, they called to see how I was feeling. And, 2 days after that, another call with my complete lab results. Really great! read more

The hospital staff and doctors, and especially Dr. Rao, saved my life during the two weeks I spent at this lovely and comfortable hospital. All the rooms were single, at least on the floor I was on, and it was quiet and friendly and comfortable. After two weeks I was medically evacuated to Stanford Hospital where I had two operations and two more weeks of hospitalization. I'm grateful for their care too, but as for the hospital itself, Stanford Hospital was not at all as comfortable or private or pleasant as Wilcox Hospital, and the staff at Wilcox were super friendly and helpful and kind. And I was just on vacation, but they treated me as if I were a local. I'm forever grateful. read more

I am "that" tourist that breaks his foot doing something dumb on his honeymoon in Hawaii. Luckily, Wilcox is an American hospital with no lines and doctors with real degrees. (I don't go to Mexico for all those reasons... Hawaii is America. Hooray.) The coolest thing was walking in at 9 am on a Wednesday morning to the ER and having literally a 5 minute wait. I filled out paperwork, sat down for two minutes and they said "come on back". For a while there I was the only person in a room. The doctor was prompt, courteous, laughed at my injury and was even from the same place (Dallas). Great place to be injured on a vacation, I suppose. read more

The ER was fantastic. Super attentive and super quick. They were aware of my overlying health condition (i have mastocytosis, it's wicked rare) and the staff was friendly and calming. The Emergency Clinic was fucking awful. Rude doctor, test results that were never delivered, I was misdiagnosed, it was horrible. read more

I saw a Doctor in the GI department today, that was awesome! A young Doctor Matthew. Not sure of his last name, but great doctor! He listened patiently to my concerns, and had such the soothing, calming touch. He gave me great information which helped me understand what could be my issue. On Friday morning, my wife broke her tibia quite badly. The emergency room physician and nurses were great. Saturday she had surgery with a fabulous orthopedic surgeon. Nursing care post-surgery was great. The post-op doctor that was assigned was wonderful. Everyone was competent, gracious and service minded. I really have zero issues with any aspect of this unfortunate experience- only praise and gratitude! Thank you so much to the whole staff! read more

Review is for Nurse Practicioner Jennifer Ballard. I tried to make a follow-up appointment with the doctor who initially treated me but somehow wound up with her instead. When I told her that my condition had deteriorated drastically and that my pain level had increased markedly, she told me "No" and that in fact my condition had improved. I asked her to please relay to my doctor what I shared with her, she did so only reluctantly. Doctor gave me a referral for a MRI and she told imaging to send the pictures to her and for me to make a follow up appointment with her. But guess what? I'M NOT YOUR PATIENT JEN! And now, here I am, 25 days later, in absolute effing agony and terrified that I'm going to wind up face to face with Jennifer Ballard instead of my doctor as she proceeds to tell me that everything I tell her I am wrong about everything I am feeling and experiencing. This experience has been so infuriating and frustrating. I am being ignored and invalidated. read more

Tourists are given preferential treatment. few weeks ago I went to the Emergency room and I was admitted. Nurses were very nice. Problem was I had to wait 22 hours in the ER in pain before I could get a bed upstairs. Meanwhile tourists right next to me who weren't there that long were given a bed before me. Because I'm a resident. Tourists were given preferential treatment. If you are white and a tourist and you whine and complain enough, you will be given better care than people who live here who have to wait 22 hours in pain to get a bed after being admitted. Tourists are taking away from residents because admin is allowing it. read more

Avoid this hospital for LD purposes at all costs. I had a horrible experience with the LD department when I was having contractions and wanted to make sure I wasn't going in to labor while we were visiting the island. First of all, they wanted to run all sorts of labs. Fortunately I am an RN and knew they were completely unnecessary, all I needed was someone to look at my cervix. Probably saved hundreds of dollars. From the beginning they were talking about flying me to Oahu. It was all very overkill. If I was an anxious person It would have been traumatizing. The OB on call was pretty inexperienced and never contemplated the fact out loud that they could just be contractions not causing labor. He proceeded to do a cervical check during the exam without my consent as well as swabbed my rectum without consent. I should add that both he and my RN were practicing extremely poor hygiene practices and this is a sterile exam. After everything checked out completely fine, he insisted he was going to keep me there for another two hours to do another cervical check. He sent an RN in to tell me this. This was laughable to me. He wanted to risk inducing pre term labor and infection and do an additional check TWO HOURS after he just did one. Thankfully the lab I did consent for came back negative for pre term labor and I was able to leave. I came back to San Diego and told my OB about this experience and he was HORRIFIED. I am so grateful I did not end up with an infection or pre term labor from Wilcox Medical Center. The only thing I did end up with is a bill that has charges for procedures I did not consent to. read more

I'm not sure if I went to the same hospital as you all in the high reviews. But this hospital is dirty. MRSA On first unpairing critical condition. I was in great shape. Dr.rao misdiagnosis of stroke had me in meds I didn't need . Side effects gave edema my legs where giving me pressure ulcers. The MRSA. then, reacted to the retention of water in my legs worse then diabetic victims. and infections everywhere resulting in necrosis fasciitis which is a type of flesh eating staph. The medication long, story short wasn't managed correctly. I eventually got many stomach ulcers and the blood platelets bleed so heavily from the nsaids + last minute plavix given had excessive brushing gave me a massive GI bleed, 3am fainted after pissing, fall in bed foot board and hit my head concussing with blood coming outta both ends and shit everywhere naked my partner was throwing up. I flat lined and pretty much died was saved by the awesome fighter fire. With adrenaline pumps and CPR. My body then was in a never ending spiral of deterioration. 4 bags of trains fusion. my PCP who ran with the dr. Raos suggestion dr. Ogilve ran and abandoned me. So I was left with no PCP but they decided to paint me as non compliant. Altering my records to cover up the shit storm they caused. So every doctor didn't want to give me pain medication. I then or now over 4 years of pain have gone to so many visits they don't know how to help me.so more then 6 emergency visits. podiatrist visits 200 times and in paitiant 5 times with multiple complications doctors once a month on top of it and so many referrals. I acquired a mental illness from all this they say, PTSD but they changed it to bipolar. So family thinks I'm crazy now and no support due to a sosiopathic father.and they don't believe I ever went to hospital and have shunned me . The electronic records where easily viewed by my narcissismlike siblings and I was slandered by them at the first doctor visit. I have lost all pleasure in sexual activities from side effects. I was prescribed Zantac for my ulcers for 3 years and most likely have cancer from it. The doctors like that comment dr. Matthews yelled why I was at his office. I tell him his receptionist called me to schedule. I was in his office and he was calm and nice and decided to try to yell to see if I'd flip out because my record began to make me look vicous so all the referrals denied to see me. Saying I spewed my poop all over and I wave around like a lunatic. So I'm now in process of making the hospital out as it should and comment about being treated like a local!! It's more like the locals wish they got treated by the Haole spoiled brats! read more

This is lydell s Cristobal and I've been going t pt for a few weeks now. Been there before saw a lot of different therapist and I can confidently say they are all very good at what they do always acting in a professional and compassionate apprroach. I am currently seeing a therapist forgot his name, he is Japanese and been in the service. He is working on my shoulders which has been bothering me for years ( had surgery on. My right shoulder). He is doing an excellent job and it doesn't hurt as much as it did before seeing him. His communication skills is outstanding , he says it in a way that the patient would understand what's going on and what would be the best method of further helping my shoulder in ways to aliviate the ongoing pain. He encourages me to do what I've been doing all my life ,which is paddling . He explains that paddling builds the muscle around the shoulder and is vital to keeping my shoulders in shape, it's also good for my health to excercise and loose weight to take pressure of my knees . I also suffer from knee problems on both knees ,had a knee replacement on my left knee about four or five years ago and it still hurts excrutionately, my right knee is bone on bone . My two hips needs replacement too. My back and neck is also in serous.y bad shape . He is currently working on my shoulders and doing an exceptional job. I have told him if I need thraphy on my knees should I have surgery I'll definitely ask for him as my therapist. I honestly worked with most of the therapist there and they are all professionals and do thier jobs with excellence and pride with the patients best interest in mind. I truly commend them for the job they do with patients for the patient.The therapist I'm working with now is very knowledgeable in what he does. The staff is outstanding and understanding too in what they have to do and put with like the therapist themselves do, everyday working with patients with extreme pain can be challenging for the therapist and staff. Finally I'd like to emphasis the importance of pt , it's a huge part of your recovery and should be ongoing and completed for maximum results for whatever your condition calls for. A professional organization the pt at Wilcox . I would definitely encourage friends and family to go to Wilcox pt for thier treatments. Thanks to all therapist and staff for a job well done. SCARY medical care on this island. Apparently, Wilcox has the only x-ray machine on Kauai, requiring us to go to the hospital to rule out a broken leg. NO clinics on the North Shore have x-ray machines. Unbelievable. We got there and the ER was packed. Part of this was that we were there on 12/27, and all clinics were closed on 12/26. There is inadequate primary care on Kauai to go with the lack of x-rays; go figure. She had her vitals checked and asked for pain meds. I asked again 20 minutes later and again 15 minutes after that. I then said I would go to Long's across the street (for other vacationers, there is a Long's at the mall with the Macy's across the street). I was directed to the pharmacy in the hospital, where they were very helpful and shocked that my daughter hadn't received pain meds 45 minutes after she got there. When I went to the pharmacy, I saw the bone and joint clinic and asked if she could be seen there. No, they wouldn't see her there. The suggested the clinic, and called the clinic, who also couldn't see her that day. So we continued to sit and rot in the ER because there were no other choices for x-rays. While we sat there, another visitor came in to have a possible broken finger checked. Same story. She had been sent from the clinic because of health insurance issues, but had an appointment. She suggested that I call the clinic to see if I could get her appointment for my daughter. Even though her clinic appointment was 15 minutes earlier, they wouldn't take my daughter. She ultimately left in disgust because of the wait. Finally, after more than 2 1/2 hours, my daughter started making noise about leaving. At that point, when I said we would leave, they miraculously were able to take her, get her immediately into x-ray, and read the x-ray quickly. She never got a bed, and didn't see the doctor for more than a minute. This is more an indictment of the health care on Kauai, but the folks at Wilcox were NOT helpful and many were downright rude. I don't think I will return to the island because the lack of availability of medical care is scary for me with my very active family. read more

Nice looking hospital right next to Walmart. Stopped by there to check out the facility during our trip. The staff seemed to enjoy working there. From the look on their faces I interpreted them to be saying "I live and work on a beautiful Hawaiian island and you don't". I'd work there just for the cafeteria food.
