Hotpot review only I was so excited to go here with my friend. It had been such a long time since I had hotpot. We decided to split a pot. I got regular she got spicy. We both got loads of veggies and mushrooms. I tried the fish all she didn't. I got FOOD POISONING she didn't. I had nothing to eat before hand as I had planned on fully gorging myself here. Not long after we finished I felt pains but I thought I maybe I ate too much. Except the pain got worse. And worse. Then I spent the next six hours on and off vomiting violently and painfully. The next day I felt so sore from vomitting and extremely fatigued the next few days I've never felt to so horrifically disappointed and betrayed by food. I am sad b/c i went in wanting to love it. I can't speak for their Chinese food or sushi but I don't think I'll chance it. This happened the week before Christmas so maybe they've improved their health and safety standards and Have taken food safety courses but I doubt it . Does anyone know their health department score by chance? read more

Been eating here about once a month for 2 years now, and I always order off the Chinese menu. I'm very appreciative of the opportunity to have a more "authentic" option instead of just the usual mushu I find other places. I've always had exemplary service and food. I have noticed some inconsistency in preparation and spice level, but nothing that'd warrant a negative review; only minor things. I'd recommend ordering pork, chicken, vegetable, tofu, and the non-mushu beef dishes over any of the seafood (being that we're entirely landlocked). It's still somewhat of a new restaurant, but they're getting better with time. Hope to see less Tilapia in the Fish section to be replaced by higher quality options (Walleye, Halibut, Pollock, etc), and a greater selection of noodle dishes in the future. read more

They have never ending sushi, which is so wonderful! The rice is surprisingly flavorful, the fish is pretty good, and they have some fun and inventive rolls that you can order. The only thing I really disliked was the salmon. The salmon was plastic-y and had a horrible flavor. If I go back, which I will, I will not order the salmon again. Happy to see some authentic Chinese cooking. Portions are designed for sharing family style. If you like spicy, this is the place for you, although there are milder options. Everything we had was delicious--salt and pepper shrimp, enoki beef, and the whole spicy fish. The Shanghai cabbage was fresh and sweet. Looking forward to going back and trying the clams, garlic lamb, squirrel fish, lobster, and some of the other soups and appetizers. Wow. These reviews on here are blowing my mind. Leave it to a bunch of inexperienced know it all eaters to ruin a great thing for Sioux Falls. There are zero...I repeat zero good Chinese restaurants in this town. Lao Szechuan is the first. Just because you don't know how to layer flavors don't point the finger at someone else. Hot pot restaurants never come with instructions. I guess this one should post a "bring your common sense" to the restaurant sign. Please don't blame the restaurant. This place is phenomenal. We've eaten here 5 times and haven't had a bad meal yet! A few favorites for palates new to Sichuan cuisine - the cucumbers, green beans, cumin beef, rougamo (basically the best sloppy joe you've ever had) and of course the dumplings. Walked in and was immediately told about the hot pot only. No other menu offer. We said we did not what spicy anything. She tried repeatedly to change our minds. Could not understand the waitress at all with her mask. The price was ridiculous at $24 a person I don't care if it was all you can eat. You had to get your food out of a cooler. This place is a great addition to Sioux Falls restaurants for many reasons. The cuisine is unique and authentic. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and can help advise on different dishes to try and can make adjustments on different spice and seasonings to meet your preferences (ie not spicy, no garlic). Just be sure to ask for help if you don't know what to try. My recommendation for dishes include: rougamo, cucumber salad, cumin beef, mapo tofu, green beans, spicy fish. My husband and I did not care for the Lo Mein. It was a big portion. The appetizer was tasty.

VISITED LAO SZECHWAN HOT POT RESTAURANT TONIGHT... Here is my google review. This was an absolutely horrible dining experience! I should have known when We walked into the restaurant and there was only one table occupied. To start the service was horrible. Waitress didn't explain how to prepare properly after asking if we had been to hot pot before (we hadn't). After sitting pickin out our food to cook in pot I saw an employee with a bowl of rice and went to get a bowl for my table and the rice container was absolutely empty! How you gonna eat all the rice and leave paying customers with nothing?! We chose 1/2 hot and 1/2 mild for the broth which had ABSOLUTELY NO FLAVOR! But the waitress did warn us the broth was bland and we had to add sauce after... ‍ So cook your food in some water broth and then and flavor? The option available to choose from were extremely limited maybe a total of MAYBE 25 options to cook in your hot pot. Then you have the sauce (flavor section) unless you are a person who has knowledge of making Asian sauces you are going in blind and most likely going to get something not so delish. Not even a suggestion of sauce recipes. I am extremely dissatisfied and disappointed. Then to add a little salt ( not just to the broth) I look at the menu ( printed on paper) and see the cost for adult is $26 and child is $13 and I'm cooking it myself? Um.... No. There was not one piece of my dining "experience" that would call for $26 plate. Poor service, unwelcoming ambiance, and extremely limited option, Bland broth. NO! CARNAVAL $35ish a plate but that is a DINING EXPERIENCE, beautiful restaurant, stellar customer service, delish flavorful food and a plethora of options. HUHOT $16ish a plate 60+options flavor suggestions for the people who don't know. Not that exciting of a dining experience but they do cook your food for you. I am a believer in you get what you pay for and this place absolutely missed the mark. For $26 a plate You better be between CARNAVAL and HUHOT! LAO SZECHWAN is not even off the bench. After complaining about the cost being steep The waitress says there is a "special" tonight 10% off your ticket! PLEASE! I will never go to this restaurant again and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. We ordered the sesame chicken it was horrible no chicken in it and very dry. It was completely inedible. Lo mein noodles had no flavor. Kong pow chicken had so many chopped peppers it was hard to eat. We were not given fried rice option. Would never recommend this place! read more

As an Asian who grew up in California and raised on traditional food this is as authentic as it gets. We love this place and are so glad it is here. We had a pork belly dish, eggplant, and chicken in chili oil and they were all fantastic. This is a much needed addition to the Chinese food scene here.
