Having lived in Cali and Nevada, my hubby and I are SPOILED on authentic Japanese food. This restaurant meets our expectations being in the mid-west! The food is very good and authentic! The setting is small and cute. Luckily we got there before the rush, because it gets PACKED quick. Quality of sushi is there, definitely fresh and taste like how it should for quality sushi. Pro tip: ask for no wasabi if you don't want any wasabi on top of your rice and under your fish. We thought they would just place on the side, but found out we were dead wrong! Disadvantages: LONG LONG LONG WAIT. Entered at about 6:30, got our soup around 7:30, and didn't get sushi until about 8:20. Plan to stay for 2-3 hours. Was it worth the wait? If you appreciate authentic and high quality sushi and Japanese dishes, this is a must-go. Fumi has a unique story how he ended up in SF. However he has def delivered on great Japanese cuisine and sushi. Yes, I agree, the wait can be frustrating during busy hours. And yes the hours are only good for dinner service. But if you have the time and appetite at night, I highly recommend. Being a sushi chef, I appreciate the smaller selection of maki and fish, however when you deliver such high quality, it's hard to make everything perfect. If you're looking for a bunch of "fancy" rolls w extra condiments and fillings that take away from the experience of raw fish, then this is not your place. Opening scene to adventure. 3.5 hour drive to Sioux falls with friends to enjoy the city, falls park and a nice getaway. #1 sushi was not doing dine in. So, onto #2. "Pun intended" Quality of food is great. If you can get them to serve it. Our server was a tall lad, black hair and full of tats. Which is all good. However, if you lack the basics; spunk , follow-up, eye contact, and just an overall opinion of caring. Then maybe this is not the job for you. 25 min to take order. Fine. However, over the next 60, we experienced, well, nothing. Table of 4. waited 90 minutes for. No followup. No eye contact. No, sorry for the wait. So I said in a calm voice. Young man could you check on our order. Long to the short, I ended up finding someone who looked to be in charge and had to MN passive aggressive him. Tipping is a privilege- Not a right. Young man; you failed at the simplest task. Take ownership of the process. Put down the phone and pick up the pace of making sure you are earning your privilege of employment. I mean this with all sincerity, We cannot risk going back because of terrible terrible service. Shame really. Once it arrived, it was made delish. This a great example of a restaurant fitting in to the locale and being unique to similar restaurants. The "miso" soup was localised by adding potatoes and onions. I LOVED it. Delicious and surprising. Every sushi place I have been to have given the same sweet dressing on their complimentary salad. Sushi-Masa is the first place I've been to that had a unique and tasty curry flavored dressing. Really good. The Sushi and Sashimi was really good and I would recommend a visit, especially if you want something different w/o a trendy price attached. This place is small and friendly. I enjoyed the experience. BTW - I have to mention that if you are a Coaster who thinks there is nothing in the Midwest, a vast void in the middle of the country, please check your attitude. Just like everywhere else in this country, fish is distributed on ice and fast by distributors who wouldn't stay in business if they couldn't provide good quality. Don't knock it til you try it. I've been coming here since I was 12. They are a hole in the wall of downtown Sioux Falls. If you love sushi and sashimi it's great. The couple who owns it are from the island of Hokkaido Japan. They make every meal. They are not fancy but have great presentation and you get huge pieces of sashimi. I love their salad dressing!! It's different; same with the miso soup, it's with potato and onion. I suggest getting the sashimi and sushi combo boat; it has great variety and then add a roll with it. 50 years of government-sponsored anti-Communist propaganda gave us a public that is suspect, or simply ignorant, of concepts involving the slightly Marx-inflected words "production," "labor," and "distribution." Econ 101 instructors across the fruited plain decry gape-mouthed students who feel strongly about stuff like "freedom" and "liberty" but know little about the economic systems that govern their day-to-day lives. Typically this does not affect my dining excursions, but in the case of Sushi-Masa, I must make like John Maynard Keynes and intervene. The relevant concept here is "distribution of goods." Yelp reviews of Midwest sushi joints frequently mention our proximity to the ocean. Summary: we aren't proximate to the ocean. So when eating bad sushi, they shrug: "What do you expect? The ocean is far away!" When eating excellent sushi, they exclaim, "This is really good...for the Midwest!" Skim any local sushi joint's reviews. You'll find some donkey commenting along these lines. And it makes sense, right? South Dakota is home to the "pole of inaccessibility," out near Badlands Nat'l Park. The pole is the furthest point in North America from any ocean coastline. It's the most remote spot on the continent, if you happen to be a white explorer in 1650 and not a guy with a car in 2013. Consequently, sushi here probably isn't as "fresh" as sushi in, say, California. The "free market" isn't SO free that it can circumvent geography. Right? Wrong. I pause to speak two truths: 1.) Freshness matters. Fish straight from the market or, better yet, straight outta the deep blue sea is notably tastier than fish sitting on ice long before the ol' slice-and-serve. But that doesn't mean coastal restaurants serve better fish. 2.) Midwestern sushi typically sucks. But not for lack of an ocean. Sushi-Masa serves great sushi. Period. It belongs on any honest list of the best sushi joints in the region. S-M would be above average in ANY region (including coasts East, West, and Gulf). They acquire high quality fish the same way restaurants in all fifty fertile states (including Hawaii) acquire fish: they order it from a distributor. The fish takes an icy trip. It arrives. It is prepared and served. NY and CA have hundreds of restaurants better than S-M, but their proximity to shark-infested waters is irrelevant. The fish served in coastal cities is typically shipped from fisheries tens, hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles away. They usually serve SOME fish straight from the harbor at market price; but this is a quaint mode of distribution that represents only a small portion of the average NY/CA menu. True, coastal cities have greater access to fresh fish. But the path a typical piece of fish takes to your plate isn't a straight line from the ocean. The path is circuitous. Take Chicago, an enormous inland city overlooking a great stinking pond of mosswater. Most food critics would agree that two or three of the best seafood restaurants in America are in Chicago. Yet I recently heard a cretin ask, in an attempt to appear intelligent in front of other humans, "How fresh can Chicago seafood REALLY be?" Answer: as fresh as 90% of the seafood you'd get ANYWHERE else. So why is most Sioux Falls sushi subpar? It's nothing to do with coasts. It's markets and distribution. Demand for great sushi doesn't exist here, and S-M is fighting against that market. A good distributor can get you great fish (S-M had URCHIN last week!), but good distributors are expensive. S-M is obviously working with one, and I hope they continue. Recently at Sushi-Masa, Mrs. S and I ordered two rolls (scorpion and spicy tuna) and a plate of sashimi. Everything tasted great: the tuna, the octopus, the URCHIN (!!!) was as good as similarly priced sushi on the coasts. The portions and cuts were generous (I know Midwesterners like that). The rolls were big and sloppy, nicely tempura-fried and mayonnaise-stuffed, good if you like that sort of thing. And these rolls were inexpensive: a few dollars each. (If you're paying less than that, you're eating crappy sushi.) Our server was attentive and extremely professional. S-M is a real restaurant, not a customer mill where, ten minutes after the food arrives, they ask if you've saved room for dessert. One big complaint: like many sushi places around here, S-M uses shredded carrots instead of daikon/radish when plating the sushi. UGH! Carrots are TOO SWEET! They overwhelm the sushi! After an appropriate interval, our waitress asked about dessert. We ordered homemade red bean ice cream. OMG! I was going to deduct a star for the shredded carrots, but the ice cream saved it. I hear complaints: "Sushi-Masa isn't as good as it used to be." I think they mean, "Sushi-Masa isn't as new as it used to be." Baloney. This is the best sushi in South Dakota. They've recently stopped serving lunch and there's a "Help Wanted" sign on the door. We should support Sushi-Masa! Sioux Falls would be poorer without it! read more

Sushi Masa is a great sushi restaurant in an unlikely place. I'm not just talking about the fact that we're landlocked in every sense of the word here in South Dakota, I'm talking about their building too, because frankly, the place looks like it might be condemned from the outside. However, once you're inside, it's a first class dining experience with Sushi that can hold it's own with other places that sit just yards from the shoreline (I'm thinking of sushi places I've been to before in Hawaii, St. John, and Baltimore). The owners must have a fantastic distributor because everything is seaside fresh and expertly hand-crafted. You know this because you can watch the two owners at work, making each roll with loving care. Of course, this comes with a bit of extra wait-time. This is one reason for a 4/5 instead of a 5/5. The other reason is the lack of a full menu most of the time. On only a couple occasions have I been at Sushi Masa when their full kitchen was open, which is a bummer because their full menu is page after page of authentic Japanese cuisine. In summary, this restaurant has by far the best sushi in Sioux Falls, and probably the region. The service is friendly, the ambiance is cozy, and the inside of the book is a million times better than its shabby exterior cover. read more

Great sushi spot! Each roll, nigiri, and sashimi piece was clean, fresh and delicious. Our table got a wide variety of rolls and were impressed with all of them. Intimate space in the restaurant really creates a nice environment but if you have a big group this might not be the right spot for you. In my opinion, the best sushi (though there a couple other perfectly fine places) in Sioux Falls. Definitely a great spot for date nights and conversations with friends. read more

I've backpacked through Japan. I've lived in Denver. I currently live in Los Angeles... Sushi Masa and the husband and wife chef that own this place is one of THE BEST sushi establishments I've ever had. I've been eating here since High School. I would drive from Mitchell to Sioux Falls on school nights with my brother and get sushi here. In Los Angeles the sushi is garbage. It's usually filled with cream cheese and fake imitation crab. Sushi Masa does it right. They're true to form with their nigiri, hand rolls, sashimi, maki, and temaki. I am going back home this Monday and the first place i want to go to eat is at my family's restaurant Twin Dragon, then Sushi Masa. In that order, and then repeat. I'm going to finally introduce myself to the couple this visit, and thank them for being authentic, and serving some of the best quality sushi i've ever had. AND if you're wondering where the best 3 sushi places I've been to... 1. Osaka, Japan : Found a small 10 seater sushi bar, and it was the first experience ever where locals were buying sushi for us to try and they were local cuts of fish. 2. Sushi Masa : One of the best restaurants in Sioux Falls. If the chef there had access to locally grown produce, He would be a James Beard contender. 3. Los Angeles, CA, Sushi Komasa : I ate here and it reminded me of Sushi Masa. The chef served only nigiri, hand rolls, sashimi, maki, and temaki. I am perplexed by the number of non-5-star reviews here, but I can only attribute this to the fact that there are not a lot of people in this region who are very familiar with Japanese cuisine, and this place is deliciously authentic. I am from California, and my wife is from Hawaii, and neither of us have found a sushi restaurant in either state that is nearly as good as this for less than $100 per person. Honestly, this restaurant was pivotal in deciding to take a job in this city (and state), because I figured even if the job sucked, I could get delicious sushi whenever I wanted. All of the sushi is prepared exclusively by the owners (husband and wife), and the attention to detail is obvious. Perfectly seasoned rice? Large portions of fresh fish? Check, and check. Unagi is always a safe gateway sushi for the uninitiated, and it remains a favorite here. Feeling more adventurous? Try a salmon skin handroll; I've never had it prepared better anywhere else, no matter how expensive. Beef sushi is also a thing, and if you are okay with nicely-marbled rare beef, it is surprisingly delicious as well. Wether you are a connoisseur or a novice, don't pass on the opportunity to make your own roll with a cover, as this is an unusual freedom to have available in most sushi restaurants. You order a standard roll and then specify some other substance to cover it (think fish, avocado, or tempura). There is a humble offering of alcohol, all of which are excellent. You wouldn't come here just for drinks, but there is more than enough sake to go with your meal. The service here is friendly and thoughtful but not fast. Ordered take out on 6/5/20. Sushi was very good! It always is! I love that the rice stays together when you take a bite instead of falling apart like at so many places. We had the proteiner with tuna and spicy tuna rolls, California rolls for the kids, spider rolls, salmon sushi, udon noodles, etc. Soup was delicious. My only complaint was the salad dressing. It's terrible. I don't know what it is but none of us could eat our salads it was so bad. Most sushi restaurants serve this creamy peanut dressing that is so delicious you could drink it. I strongly recommend getting some different dressing. I also think the price is a little high for what you get. $120 for a family of 5 and we didn't order a lot for 5 people and all my youngest got were noodles. Still a great place for Sushi! read more
