Our 14-year-old relative is a chronic runaway and substance user -- a child who has already been in treatment and placed on psychiatric holds. Despite this, the level of urgency and accountability from this department to locate and protect her has been severely lacking. The efforts to track down minors being exploited or supplied with hard drugs appear almost nonexistent. Even if a teen has a history of running away or substance use, the effort to find and protect them must still be made. It should never be dismissed simply because "she'll leave again." Every child deserves to be treated as someone worth saving -- every single time. This is not just one family's tragedy -- it's a community crisis. Teenagers are being targeted, lured, and trafficked while families are left begging for help. Our streets must be safer. I reported a panderer with a sign that says somebody she knows died from cancer and wants donations, it's a scam, the woman was walking in and out of traffic, but the police over at the WV station answering the phone couldn't give two sh&ts. He wouldn't send anyone out. His tone was very rude, abrupt, nasty, condescending. These officers need to be trained better, this is totally unacceptable. It is with great regret that I have to give a one star rating to the police department that is supposed to be protecting and serving the people of the city of Los Angeles. In my 40 year study, 80% of police officers working with Los Angeles Police Department are just bullies. They are not out there to keep the community safe. They are just out there to write tickets and bring in revenue for the city. They have no compassion and they have an extreme syndrome of false authority. They believe they are gods. When in reality, that is just a symptom of a bully. The people of Los Angeles are supposed to be able to count on the police and call them for help. Unfortunately, that does not happen just like that. People call the police at the very last point. Many people are afraid that the police will shoot them accidentally instead of the bad guy. When the police do show up, they assume everyone is bad. The bottom line is this, the policeman are supposed to be brave and courageous, and be willing to leave down their lives to protect others. The Los Angeles Police Department is definitely not that. The majority of officers are worried about getting home to their families. If that is your worry, you should not have such an important and dangerous job. This type of job is for fearless, honorable man and women, that are willing to lay their lives down to protect the innocent. How unfortunate that I cannot give these guys a five star rating. I walked in to ask a question about serving someone a restraining order. The officer at the counter talked to me with a very argumentative and irritated tone of voice from the beginning. He came at me like he tried to intimidate me. He didn't let me finish asking my question and raised his voice and said, "you need to go to the sheriffs! We don't do that here". I asked how I could have sherif help me out, but he repeatedly said "you need to go to sheriff! We don't do that here". After my 12 hour shift at work I came home and noticed a badly damaged Toyota with open doors parked on my street. After parking a got a call and sat in my car for a few minutes. During that time 2 bicycle riding tweakers rolled up with big trash bags filled with god knows what and dropped them off and went off again. I'm not Columbo by any means but judging by my ring App etc it was apparent that they are stashing their goods in the car. I attempted to call 911 and got into an argument that this is not an emergency and was transferred to the none emergency line where I have been told that they are sorry for he unusually long wait time for the past 20 minutes. [Before stating my review, I feel no need to offer the de rigueur disclaimer about my admiration for the men and women in blue. This IS NOT an anti-cop rant! OF COURSE I respect the police. My complaint is about how little respect, courtesy and spirit of service the police have for those of us who obey the law and act as good citizens when we need them.] There is ZERO point in calling this place for any need you might have. Don't even bother. For an emergency you call 9-1-1, of course, although from the frequent reminders at every turn to call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency, it seems that a lot of us need to be reminded that emergencies mean calling 9-1-1 and not your nearest pharmacy or medical billing office! Okay, I got that. By default, then, when one is calling a police station, one is not calling about an emergency. This leaves just two possibilities: calling about some administrative matter (obtaining a form or something similar) OR reporting some important but non-emergency matter. In my case this evening it was the latter in the form of a neighbor disturbing the peace. I mean, really disturbing the peace! For the record, I called the non-emergency number, only to be on hold FOREVER with the TDY tone for the hearing impaired BLASTING into my ears every 30 seconds! (I have no problem with the TDY service, but why not make it available as a prompt so the non-hearing impaired don't have to hear it?) The volume of the thing is so much louder than that of the too-frequent reminder prompt about waiting on hold, you have to turn the handset volume of your phone down, but this means you may miss hearing when someone actually picks up to speak with you! This got incredibly annoying - almost as much as my neighbor's music! So I called the number listed for the police station closest to me - the West Valley LAPD. And after listening to the greeting and the various options on the phone tree, I selected the prompt that seemed to relate to my matter, only to have the system hang me up! I called back. Hung up on again. Alas, the third time WAS NOT the charm. So I got in my car and drove over. Mind you I was tired, a little ill, trying to get to bed a little early, and could not because the neighbors had had their party in effect since 11am...it was now 9:30pm! I am a bit under the weather and had hoped to be able to get to bed early. But instead of shut-eye, I was forced to visit a police station. For obvious reasons I was frustrated and upset. I mean, nobody visits a police station in a happy mood! I got to the desk and explained my problem, only to be greeted with the most patronizing and solicitous young officer ever. "I can see that you are upset but you need to calm down. I cannot help you, sir, if you are upset. Try to calm down, okay?" This was offered with the sort of tone that might greet a five-year-old who'd just lost a toy!! My voice was not loud - I was certainly not yelling. But I was simmering with frustration and a lot of impatience. Yet this young officer said he COULD NOT ASSIST ME IF I WAS UPSET. In others words, he would not help me unless I was calm, cool and collected. Total nonsense!! I mean, aren't people seeking the help of police USUALLY UPSET?? Think about that for a minute. Of COURSE I was upset! Sick, unable to get a little sleep due to neighbor's all-day party, unable to reach police by phone, forced to drive to police station, and now being talked down to by a police officer! A recipe for serenity that is not! Here's the kicker: All the officer could do was call the non-emergency number for me, waiting on hold to get someone who could take my complaint! Think about that for a minute. What I was told is that this is a weekend and few units are available to attend to matters such as disturbances of the peace....but isn't the weekend when disturbances of the peace are rampant? I was told that a unit would be sent out but have little faith that that will happen. You see, calling the police to report a non-emergency is a waste of time. If a neighbor troubles you, calling the police means NOTHING. All you will get for your trouble (if you are willing and able to endure the gauntlet of impediments to actually reaching an officer) is a patronizing attitude that implies YOU are somehow the problem. No empathy, listening or compassion, and certainly no spirit of service to a taxpaying citizen...just condescension. Here's a tip: If you ever have to visit the police to report a problem in person, get your Zen on or at least ACT happy. Officers seem not to like dealing with people in distress. 6 police officers were called to my home for a welfare check this morning. They were amazing! I was frightened at first not knowing why they were here. They were ALL very professional, cordial, and safety minded. Lieutenant Jaffe went above and beyond the call of duty to give me advice and make sure I was okay. I wish I could remember all of the officers' names to commend them individually and thank them for making me feel protected and safe. Officer Hendershot was one of the fine group of men who helped me today, and I'm very grateful for all of you!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I recognize that these guys do a job that most of us couldn't or wouldn't, so for that, I have great respect for them! I also recognize that the evening that I called them on the non-emergency line was 2 days before the 4th of July (in other words, a VERY busy Saturday night on a holiday weekend!), and very late (11:45pm) in the day. But I was stuck on hold for some 22 minutes so I could simply report cherry bombs being blasted right in front of my complex. This was the 2nd night in a row that this happened, and as it went on for 3 MORE nights following, it seems kinda obvious that nobody came to check things out! I live 3 buildings back from our street (remember, condo complex!), and the blasts were startling and nerve-jarring EVERY time-even this far removed from the street, so it's hard to imagine that others did not call! I suspect that they did, and clearly got the same results as me....NOTHING. I clearly recognize that this was not a 911 emergency type of situation. Yet, on the other hand, with no-shows by the police, this clearly might end up as a 911 scenario as more and more blasts went on! So there's the debate: call 911 and get an immediate response to a potential situation, or continually call and wait on a VERY irritating hold (2 different recorded messages, cycling with another 2 other cycling messages saying the exact same thing cycling in Spanish. No music, no nice lady voice asking me to hang on cuz they were super busy...grrrrrr!). I'm not pleased about this, ESPECIALLY because the operators do not have to be trained police officers. They could be interns, volunteers, or minimum-wage operators relaying the info. BUT, though not pleased by THIS situation, I'm still 100% supportive of all of the folks, clearly braver than me, that do this job. They absolutely have my respect and support. read more

If I could give this police station zero stars, I would. After someone stole my car and my U-Haul truck, I made a report to the police station and even went down to fill out paperwork. I informed the officers at the front desk that there was a lock on the U-Haul that they were able to saw off. I brought the lock just in case and when I showed them the officers laughed at me and said what do you think this is CSI? Way to treat your civilians. We couldn't see the officers badges, but want to thank them for displaying their professionalism. Even though, the individual(s) in their vehicle were belligerent and rude, the officers displayed tact and their skills in their trade. Every step in the process could not have been performed better. With the 405 south shut down due to the Getty fire, traffic was routed on to the 101 south. Drivers were then exiting the 101 to the canyon roads, notably Beverly Glen. Complete gridlock, dangerous gridlock. One would think that the police might anticipate that (i.e. be PROACTIVE) and have a traffic officer there several HOURS after the closure. One would be wrong. When I called the station (323.866.1828) it was a recording with a litany of menu choices. And after that, no real person, just another recording - we're busy, leave your number and we'll call back. Negative stars if I could. I was in the department this morning to report a possible gang problem. I took a picture and had location of possible problem. The office was short staff on initial impression. I signing in and waited my turn, officers were in and out from the back office - in one of those times I noticed a large group of 6 officers just having a grand time laughing as people wait up front to be helped. My thoughts were oh tax payer money hard at work. I finally had my chance after a 20 min wait to learn that all they can do is pass a message to some lead officer. Let me tell you a story. So in our mostly residential neighborhood, we have a bar called Pogos. Located on 17314 Saticoy St, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Now this bar is a dive. So you get the local alcoholics and knuckleheads as usual. On 12/14/15 at 2 am, there was a huge brawl. it must have been 20-20 people involved. Multiple neighbors called the police to complain. Police arrived, now mind you this is after 2AM on early Monday morning. The police spoke with people in the parking lot. No arrests, a feeble attempt at telling people to clear the parking lot. Then they go on their way. Exactly five minutes after they leave, the brawling, screaming, destruction of property resumes. Police get called again, they come and again do nothing to quell the noise. What is the purpose of the police in this situation? This valley department is the worst. They are slow and ineffectual. I called the next morning into the station to ask who can I speak with to escalate this? Officer on the phone asked me "what do you want me to do about it" Seriously has anyone ever called into this station and had a pleasant courteous interaction with the west valley police department? if so i would like to hear of those stories, as everything I have heard from my neighbors and residents have been negative. Also to confirm I am not exaggerating about their response to this situation at Pogos, I can confirm Pogos staff, and neighbors all agree Police came and did NOTHING in diffusing the situation. Was chased by roadrage driver hitting my truck. I called 911 was told to pullover and not fight someone trying to harm me. With no help from 911 I said no I need assistants now and was not pulling over without a cop. I told the operator to connected me to west valley who I explained what was happening. I was put on hold till I made it to the station looked like the station spooked the guy. There wasn't an officer in sight ran into the station to the most unprofessional environment ever.
