Las Almas Rotas sits in the Fair Park/Expostion area, directly across from the entrance to the State Fair. Upon walking up to the bar you are greeted with a few tables for outdoor seating and as you enter, the interior has a nice rustic Mexican decor, with the occasional old school classic Mexican Westerns playing on the TV above the bar. Las Almas Rotas has a vast amount of mezcal to choose from which is quite obvious when you look behind the bar at their wall of the various, beautiful bottles of yummy mezcal. Their menu selection is equally jam packed with all the available mezcals to choose from. So don't feel too imitated and just ask for a flight of recommended mezcals to sample. Taylor, one of the owners, was happy to give me a brief history on the origins mezcal and was apt to let me know the difference between this and the not to be confused with counterpart, Tequila. This place is total hidden gem! I am such a big fan of Tequila so my bf brought me here to expand my horizon and I am so happy to have tried Mazcal! I highly highly recommend the Topo Chico Tequila if you're not a big drinker - it is so refreshing and light that you won't even realize you're tasting tequila. We also got the Mazcal flight to try. This place really gives you a different and special experience with tequila. In addition, the service is fantastic and the servers are super friendly. I've been here a couple of times when they had a few pop ups. The pop ups were the bomb so I've decided to come see how service and good is when it's a regular night. Ted aka "sweet tea" was very quick to greet me and take my order. I settled on the chicharrones, a beef taco and pork rojo taco. The beef taco wasn't my favorite but the pork rojo was very flavorful and a taco I would order again. The chicharrones are sou vet pork belly that are fried off. They are very most and scrumptious!! The only downside was they require a credit card upfront before taking your order and keep them behind the bar. Personally I hate that, I travel a lot and have had my card number stolen multiple times by smiling waiters and bartenders. I prefer when you can swipe and hand me my card back. I opted to have him close me out and just gave a standard 20% tip, which sucks because I didn't order additional cocktails or drinks because I was closed out. The food is solid and the beer was good. What a lucky find! We came here on the recommendation of a friend before a show at Fair Park and we were not disappointed! As it was Margarita Weekend, we enjoyed a frozen mango margarita and a margarita on the rocks for a discounted price. Both were among the best we've had! We recently returned expecting the same and we're disappointed to the extent of not sure if we'd go back. The new staff was less than welcoming. The food quality was not the same. Not sure what happened. We ordered the pork belly chicharrones, these would usually come accompanied by small handmade tortillas. This time around they were small store bought tortillas. Bad experience.... everything was ok until we found out that they are a mess. We came after work for Happy Hour and when we got there we asked the server about the H.H. She told us that the items in the menu with a star were in H.H but when was time to get the check they told us that they didn't have a H.H. The manager came and told us some excuses like; that day was the 4th day of work of the waitress (is his responsibility to tell her that there is not happy hour). He offered us a 10% of discount in our check and he said that it was better than the HH prices. The HH price for a margarita is $8 and the regular price is $12. The 10% of 12 is 1.2.. 12-1.2 is more than 8 guy!!! they ended up giving us 26%. He didn't admitted his mistake.. he charged us a 20% of tip.. .. so, at the end we never got the prices of the items that we ordered and our experience ended up being an awful one!! This place is legitimately just cool! It captures the essence of a fun authentically dark pulqueria in Mexico. The servers were all so nice, informative and helpful. Despite their clothing didn't put on hipster airs at all. We were lucky enough to do a group tasting in the back room (which is a great group activity space). The owner of the bar has a real passion for the subject and it shows. The tastes varied really widely and encompassed at lot. I learned a lot. The food was fantastic. Delicious, gigantic tubular fried cheese frico (like tizconcito). Rich and filling sopes and tacos. The corn tortillas are the real deal. Fillings were great too, barbacoa, pastor, chicken. Decor was spot on, antique, and very cool. The owner explained how many of the saints had been adopted by the narcos and traficantes. They also make the best margarita I've had in dallas. Thanks to some brave and smart business owners Dallas has its first bar to dedicated to true, agave spirits. Located on a quiet street in Expo Park this place won't keep quiet for long. The exterior facade draws you in and immediately sets you up for what's on the other side. It's a comfortable, welcoming crowd with the most knowledgeable and passionate owners and bartenders around. If you get a chance just ask them some questions and pick their brains. Shad and Leigh are founts of knowledge. Fantastic, honestly friendly service. We ordered from the concise cocktail menu and sat on the crushed blue velvet church pews and raw leather chairs in front of tree slab tables. They paid attention to the details including everything in the special back room and the authentic, antiquated confession booth doors. It's screams Mexico in a true, authentic and respectful way - there's nothing tacking or kitschy in here. A favorite detail of mine is the music. It's tasteful and stays a decibel that allows you to still talk to your company which is basically unheard of in this city. The el Diablo charmed me with their wells mezcal in place of tequila. It was like Mexico in one beautiful sip. There are cocktails in Jarritos bottles, imported Mexican beers, delicious cocktails, mezcal flights (with free education)and a delightful food menu of yet again, authentic Mexican food including homemade tortillas on their meant-to-share taco platter! I just dont like sweet drinks, I guess I could have ordered a Texas Ranch Water or just one of the wonderful mezcals they offer. While some bars may have only one or possibly two mezcal choices, this is what they do here. From the rustic interior, to the TV playing old Mexican soap operas or movies, Las Almas seems as if it's pulled directly out of a small town in Mexico. The food and drinks are so delicious;however, the customer service is horrendous. They took forever to take the order. My husband had to get up to get a waiter. I hate to do this because obviously this place has some serious fans already but our experience here on Sunday (08/27) evening was unacceptable. It really deserves one star but I don't want to totally ruin their excellent streak. Im going to be extremely specific because we sat next to the owner for about 20-30 min without anyone speaking to us and I'm shocked he didn't notice. I walk in, no one greeted me, no sign for open seating. It's very intimate seating so there's no way they didn't see me and they weren't busy. I head to bar, asked gentleman if I should just sit anywhere, and he just said yea. From there, from us getting water, ordering appetizer, food and 2nd round of drinks, spanned 2 hours. To order food, after waiting to get someone's attention, I had to go to bar, where again Hispanic guy at the bar seemed extremely annoyed I was bothering him. At this point, owner had moved from table to bar with couple so I'm not sure if he heard that not a single person had even made eye contact. This place clearly has some connects in Dallas (we went there because of the great Observer article) and it's getting a lot of love, which is infuriating and makes me wonder why we didn't get same experience that everyone else clearly got. Whatever was going on that evening, hope it was a one off situation and things continue in the right direction for them. read more

We went there the other night with another couple (four of us, total) about 8:00 pm or so. There were only a couple of other tables working, so we had with high hopes. Unfortunately the good atmosphere, decent food, excellent music and competent drinks couldn't overcome the laughably incompetent - and glacial - service. I alternated between irritation and looking around for a hidden camera (after all, this HAS to be a joke, right?). If the music playing hadn't been so good, I'd have given this place a single star. I won't bore you with the lengthy list of shortcomings that added up to this evaluation, but let me cap it by saying the "fell out of my chair" moment came at the end when the waiter mentioned his tenure at other restaurants.
