Love love love. Backstory: When moving there are places you hate to leave behind. One of my biggest food regrets leaving NJ was an authentic Mexican restaurant called Selenitas in Pompton Plains. We would drive up to an hour away just to pick up takeout it was that good. I am thrilled to say that LDL is just as good (if not better) than my beloved Selenitas. Fresh everything, real deal guacamole, a family owned business in a hole in the wall on Main St in Torrington. El pastor tacos, quesadillas, flautas and fajitas so well seasoned. Fresh salsas and amazing chips. The prices were definitely reasonable! The hostess was taking takeout orders in Spanish, my husband said the decor transports you to Latin America. I've eaten at Las Delicias Latina a couple of times in the past few weeks. First time I ordered the lunch buffet -- pork w/ yellow rice and beans. Thought the pork was dry, sauce was also flavorless. Generous portion of pork, as well as rice & beans. On my next visit, I went with 2 tacos (one chicken, the other chorizo) w/ rice & beans. I was not overwhelmed with great flavor (or much flavor at all, for that matter). I've read a lot of positive reviews from fellow Yelpers for this restaurant, but honestly, I think the food falls short. A weak 3 Star rating. read more

Last weekend, I went to a cool cheese place in Colchester (that I had never heard of) - all because of YELP. Today we found another terrific place, also because of YELP. I didn't know the neighborhood where this was located, but Las Delicias Latina turned out to be a very nice place. It's on the small side, with just 6 tables and seating for 28 , plus a lunch counter with maybe half a dozen stools. Tonight the dining room was just about maxed out (with a party of seven patiently waiting) and a few patrons eating at the counter. We saw quite a few take-out customers marching in and out during our stay, and that caused a bit of a hiccup for our dinner, but more on that later. The menu is pretty broad -grilled entrees served with rice and beans, enchiladas "from the pot" - cooked in hot or mild salsa, Mexican sandwiches, flautas, tostadas, quesadillas, burritos, tacos, fajitas,soups and salads. These vary from $7 to $11. We ordered chicken quesadillas ($9.95), chorizo quesadillas ($9.95), and Al Pastor (Pork and Pineapple) Fajitas ($9.95). All dishes were served with rice and beans, but one of the really neat features of this place was that you could substitute a salad and tostones (fried plantains) OR a salad and a baked potato if you weren't a rice and beans fan. My wife falls into that category so she opted for the salad and tostones. Both were good -she liked the cilantro in the salad, and we all sampled the plantains. It took a while for the food to come out. There are just 2 workers here- a guy in the kitchen does all the cooking and a woman does all of the table service. Finally, we saw our three dishes cooked and waiting on the counter for delivery. Then, a takeout customer walked in, and she waited on him for a while as our hot food most definitely cooled off. That was a little annoying. The chorizo and pork/pineapple dishes were very good and hot, but the rice and beans were luke warm, no doubt affected by their holding pattern waiting for landing at our table. The fajitas came burrito style- stuffed in a flour tortilla. A bottle of Valentino Picante Sauce (imported from Mexico) was a nice add-on, as was the house salsa verde (pretty zippy). Dinner, a strawberry water $2) and a Tecate ($3.50) ran $37.59. The restaurant was charming, the food was very good. The downs? Well, service was a bit slow, and there were no freebie chips and salsa. I'll give them a shaky skin-of-the-teeth 4 stars. But make no mistake, I liked this place a lot. This place has been open in Torrington for EONS and having lived in the area for FIFTEEN FREAKIN YEARS I'm disgusted that I never tried this place until I moved 25 miles south to Naugatuck. I mean really, WTF is wrong with me? (Don't answer that.) Don't let the dumpy exterior (Main Street in Torrington past City Hall leaves much to be desired...) fool you. The food here is fantastic. I've come to the conclusion that the more divey an ethnic food place is, the better the food is. The carnitas taco was pretty amazing...and I use that as a measuring stick to judge all mexican places. I had a hankering for nachos so I got those. Beans, cheese, and chorizo. SO GOOD. I washed that pile of food down with mandarin Jarrito soda. PERFECTION. I'll find excuses to go back to Torrington now that I generally have none and eat my way through their menu...don't you worry. read more

We ordered burritos for takeout tonight, this is one of our favorite takeout places around. Our favorites are chicken burrito and al pastore burrito. Went here in the way home from Sundown based on the yelp reviews. Definitely a dive, we were the only dine-in customers at 5pm on a Saturday. The food was tasty, the paella on the specials board was very flavorful and big, there could have been more seafood though. I ordered steak tacos, they were good, and came with a huge pile of rice with beans, but the tacos were very thin; our local taco truck truly puts them to shame as for size and weight. The mango margarita was thick, maybe they used purée, so we asked for a traditional margarita, and they couldn't make that. What?! This is one of Torrington's best kept secrets. Offers hand cooked to order food in many cases cheaper than McDonalds and other fast food. He takes his time, loads your order to the brim and the food is the best, authentic food I have eaten. Small restaurant, amazing food, a handy stop and the owner is very nice. He should be applauded and crammed with people but it seems the city does not ever mention his place of business which is a shame. From the first bite of food from his extensive menu, to authentic latina desserts and drinks, he is my choice for a lunch or dinner out and all this in a casual comfortable spot. I live for hole-in-the-wall places like this. After having Las Delicias Latina bookmarked on Yelp for over a year, I finally stopped in to see if it would be the authentic Mexican I was hoping it would be. I was not disappointed. This place has the corn tortilla tacos with cilantro and onions that I love so much, plus rice and refried beans with cheesy entrees and mole sauce - it's like two Mexican restaurants for the price of one. My boyfriend and I decided to go for tacos for our first trip, to size the place up. I got a chorizo taco and an al pastor taco; boyfriend got the same two, plus a carnitas taco. Tacos were $2 each, and for about $7, you could get 2 tacos plus a giant helping of rice and beans. The tacos themselves were pretty huge, and all the fillings were delicious. My chorizo was quality, and the al pastor was nice and spicy with sweet chunks of pineapple to cool it all down. I had a bite of the carnitas taco, and it was really good, too. Our waitress brought us some salsa with our meals - a red and a green, the green being spicier - and they were both delicious. We didn't get chips, which would have been nice, but there were some interesting guacamoles that we might venture to try next time. For two extremely satisfying dinners and a box of leftover rice and beans, our bill came out to just under $14. We stuck to waters because it was a hot day and we were heading to the bar afterward, but there's a good selection of Mexican beers here that will be great to accompany our meals on our next stop. Authentic mexican in NW Connecticut. Can you say yum! Bit of a one man show these days, but this owner/chef/waiter finds time to do real home cooking - including his own beans, salsas and moles. Because it is homemade, the salsas and moles are inconsistant, but more often than not he hits a homerun. I recommend his fish specials, chicken mole, and enhilada verde. A local friend pretty much insisted that we eat here. I needed the encouragement, because the exterior looks like a down-at-the-heels sub shop. And the interior looks like what would happen if your wacky uncle decided to open a restaurant in his den. In other words, come here for the food. From the empanadas (crispy outside/succulent inside) to the fajitas (gigantic/tasty), everything is fresh and generous. Your rice and beans could feed a family of four. The quesadillas are as big as your head. They'll grill your lengua with peppers or put it in a taco or in green sauce. Nothing was super-spicy, even the jalepeno sauce, just enough to give you a kick. Obliging and sweet service. Only a couple of minor problems, like a piece of inedible gristle in my fajitas. Also, it's incredibly cold inside no matter where you sit. Bring a sweater, I guess. Choose from the list of about a dozen batidas or a Mexican beer (Pacifico, Negra Modelo) to round things out. Very disappointed. Came here for the first time a few months ago and the food was absolutely delicious. The rice and beans had so much flavor, as did the carne asada we got. It was amazing. I feel as though the quality has gone down drastically. We ordered tonight, we got burritos, guacamole, and 2 empanadas. The empanadas were the only edible portion of the meal. The guacamole was not as good as it usually is. The burritos we got were dry and quite frankly disgusting. The rice and beans looked like cardboard bullshit. The beans tasted as though they were dumped out of the can directly into out to go containers. It was horrid. I ate less than half and threw it all away. Maybe we'll give it another try after COVID is over, as I believe that may have something to do with the poor service. read more

First off, anyone how rates this gem of a restaurant under 5 stars is sniffing glue and should probably just go to Senor Panchos where they belong. Everything is made fresh here, Everything. The guac is awesome, and who cares if the chips and salsa aren't free, they are definitely worth paying for. What a nice little surprise! So glad to have found a new favorite spot in Torrington. I've been watching the buzz on this place grow consistently, but remained skeptical. I finally broke down and took my husband last night as a surprise (because he was more skeptical than I was). I set our GPS and let him drive to the location (to add to the suspense). Upon arrival he said "really??" and with hopeful optimism, I said let's just try. The location is a little sketchy, but once you get inside, it is fine. We started with the best guacamole served with handmade chips - absolutely delicious! I had chicken flautas and my husband a fish burrito, each dish came with a huge helping of beans and rice. We loved everything, including the no-frills, quaint interior and the friendly cook & waitress. We ordered a flan to go (because we were stuffed) and it was okay - seemed like it had a refrigerator taste (not as fresh as we had hoped). I still give this place an A. I love to support family owned businesses because it gives us a chance to dine out since we refuse to eat the frozen garbage served at all of the crappy chain restaurants. This place is the BEST Mexican in the area, thank God they are opening another one. Only complaint I have is that the interior is dated and not the cleanest. With nothing but street parking, in a nondescript little building next to a dairy queen lies something that most in this culinary wasteland known as Torrington will easily over look. A small one man show, with hand made food, moles, sides, and oddly, shakes, this little shop brings one thing to Torrington, and most of the NW corner, that wasn't here before. Proper, real latino food. Don't let the decor and plain-jane facade fool you. There's a reason this is one of the highest rated places in town, and you owe it to yourself to try it out. I am giving this place a four.. For one reason. The atmosphere left much to be desired. When we walked it, it was very cramped (children everywhere) and who I believe are the owners just kinda watched my confusion for a few minutes, and THEN told me to have a seat anywhere. Everything on the table had a thick layer of film on it, including the glass for my diet coke, the plastic table covers, salt shakers, table decor and even the basket for the chips. It always makes me leery when a place is dirty looking and feeling, for obvious reasons. However, my husband talked me into staying because how else could this place get 5 stars from everyone if the food sucked. After the rough start, the food started rolling out. The chips and salsa was AMAZING!!! So fresh and delicious, I didn't even care that the chip basket was dirty. When our food came out it was breathtakingly beautiful... All the colors and the smell was perfect for the presentation. The taste was sooooo good. The portions are large in size, and they are happy to give you a box to take with you. Overall, for the food itself I wanted to grade this place as a 5 but because of the shape and stickiness of the dining area, I just can't do it.
