One of Torrington's best new restaurants. Don't underestimate its quality and freshness. Friendly staff, home made chips and astoundingly delicious guacamole. Not too salty or acidic, but rather, savory, rich and creamy, and a veritable meal unto itself. I got three tacos with shrimp, carne, and fried cod. Super high quality ingredients. The carne was a little dry but easily remedied with the green tomato salsa. The food at the other tables was equally impressive. Especially the grilled octopus. I saw many remnants from Hanks, the previous restaurant, but it was lighter and more colorful and festive, with hanging banners, and friendly upbeat bar tenders and hosts, who were genuinely hospitable and attentive. So glad I tried this spot for a recent Sunday brunch. The vibe was relaxed with good music and a bright atmosphere. The food was amazing!! The owners and staff here are friendly and are on top of everything. You feel like you're dining with family. I've been back a few times since for lunch and dinner and I'm pleased to report that the food quality is top-notch in everything they make. 3.5 stars. This Mexican restaurant is located on the second floor of a brick building. It had its own parking lot shared with other businesses. There's even a rooftop. The decor was clean and inviting. Unfortunately, the place is not handicap accessible and there is no elevator. We were able to carry the baby carriage up; we also used it as a high chair since they didn't have any. Other than that, the service was excellent. I started off with Mexican corn ($8.75); it had mayo and cotija cheese on it. This was good but it was missing the spice element which would normally be tajin. I had to try out their house margarita because tacos and margaritas go hand in hand. The margarita was good but on the smaller side for the price ($13.75). For my entree, I chose the pick three tacos option ($14.75); they offered spicy green salsa for the tacos: Pollo asado: grilled chicken/onion/cilantro- this was decent, wished it had some cheese and spices to tie it together. Carne asada: grilled steak/onion/cilantro-same chicken comment as the pollo asado Fish tacos: beer batter cod/cole slaw- this was my favorite, the beer batter and cole slaw went well together. If I didn't have the spicy green salsa, not sure I would've enjoyed it as much. In terms of value and flavor, I'd say the place is okay. Wanted a later snack the last night in our Airbnb so placed an order via GrubHub to pick up on our own about 10 minutes later. Appreciated the prompt service. The nachos and taquitos were fantastic and filled with flavor. Definitely tasted authentic and freshly made. The owner or manager greeted us, gave us the tip to just order for pick up and not use a food service like GrubHub, etc because of the extra fees. Also she gave us menus for brunch and their regular days. While we didn't actually eat at the restaurant, we saw the rooftop bar and inside seating area, and really liked the ambience. We went with high expectations given the Yelp reviews, but unfortunately we came away disappointed with the quality of the dishes and the surprisingly high prices. We don't like to write negative comments about a neighboring establishment, but to be up front about it, our experience was not good. Let's get a bit specific: The restaurant, which is quite clean and has an appealing look, is on the second floor of a building and has a large indoor seating area with bar and in addition a rooftop seating space. Very cool. And a nice server. What isn't so cool, however, is the absence of an elevator; climbing two sets of stairs is required, so handicap accessible it isn't. The menu is not particularly large (at least compared to the usual Tex-Mex restaurants in this state), but the prices are definitely on the high side. If you want house-made chips with guac, it's $17.50 -- chips do not come with your arrival. Two tacos are $11.50, not bad, but our chicken tacos consisted of tiny diced pieces of chicken, unheated, with no lettuce, and very unseasoned. A bit of green sauce added little spice. The Ceviche Acapulco ($25) was a large glass too heavily saturated with tomato sauce and including tiny chunks of tasteless fish (tilapia). The Barra vieja ($25) was strips of steak with a bland dip. The grilled octopus is $26. Fried fish is $35 (red snapper). The refried beans seemingly came from a can: no taste, lukewarm. Nothing Mexican about them. We could go on. Again, we have only good wishes for the owners of this restaurant, but we hope they can see their way to some changes. And maybe we came on a bad day, but sadly we cannot recommend it and can't find much enthusiasm to go back anytime soon. read more

The owner came over to our table and introduced herself and explained the menu. She also told us about their tequila they are making which should be available in about 6 months. What a beautiful addition to Torrington. The inside has been tastefully updated and they offer a rooftop where you can dine outside. Perfect as the nights start to cool. Our server Everett was fantastic. He's very welcoming and knowledgeable on the menu and was able to offer great recommendations. The owner, Valeria came out and explained how the menu was inspired by her native region in Mexico, Acapulco, Guerrero. She has a true passion for her cuisine and it was definitely well displayed in all of the dishes we ordered tonight. Fresh ingredients, great presentation, and bursting with flavor. Unfortunately right now the business is being blocked by scaffolding and is not easily visible. Please note they are open and ready to offer you a great dining experience. The menu was very small and I could barely read the print. I got three tacos for 20 bucks. The corn tortillas were not even warm. The food sucks in my opinion. The bar is dirty. We had a delicious and enjoyable dinner at Casa Valijo, which is on the second floor of the address so easy to miss if you're just passing by. First, the craft cocktails (we had the house margarita and the Oaxaca Old Fashion) were delicious and perfectly well-balanced...not too sweet or too anything. The Acapulco Ceviche was really outstanding and plentiful enough to satisfy four of us. The guacamole, although a bit on the pricey side (like most places these days) was as perfect as can be and 100% worth it, particularly with their house-made tortilla chips. We then had a variety of tacos on their house-made tortillas, all yummy. The personable service is as much of a standout as the ceviche. Both will make you want to come back for much more! Casa Valijo, to its credit, is definitely not your typical Mexican restaurant, focusing as it does on the cuisine of Acapulco and on achieving its own unique high standards. You must give it a try! Word of mouth is one of the best ways to build community. So my husband and I decided to try Casa Valijo tonight for our anniversary dinner for the first time. We learned several things about this little local gem: The food is extremely fresh and authentic. The owner had shared that every 15 days she is getting some of the key ingredients all the way from Mexico. They are a young aspiring couple looking to expand the culture in town. They have brunch every Sunday until 3:30pm. As well as happy hour during the week, jazz on Friday, and other specials available. Although they do not have an elevator to enter the establishment upstairs, there is parking right next to the building. (Unfortunately may not be accessible to all, due to no elevator in the building). It has a rooftop dining area, in which she plans to put use outdoor igloos for colder weather. Which by the way, the patio has a beautiful sunset. They offer birria tacos, which are my husband and my favorite. And the best tres leches cake!! Pistachio cake was also delightful! Paired well with our coconut and mango margaritas. Oh, and this might seem silly, but the amenities available in the restrooms are such that you would feel like you're at your own house. Very relaxing and chill vibe at this spot. (Other than the restroom, obviously ) Lastly, Valeria and her husband have been coming up on a year being there. First of all- the ambiance in this restaurant is like a cozy retreat that I think about returning to constantly. The decor and lighting make for a super cute girls night out or romantic vibe.
