The campsites are nice and clean and level, although some of them are spaced too close to each other. Flush toilets weren't working (no water in campsite) as of August 2017, but there were a couple of vault toilets around. Camping is pretty cheap at 20$ a site and the nearby Butte lakes is really beautiful. My favorite though was the hike to cinder cone which starts from this campground - spectacular views and one of the coolest hikes I've ever done. I won't come back to this campground since there is nothing else really to do here - but spending a night here to hike cinder cone was totally worth it.

But if you can tolerate that, you will be rewarded with access to a delightful lake that has many wonderful hikes around it, beautiful trees, and amazing sunsets. There are sizeable bear boxes to store your food in, lots of room for a tent or three, fire rings, and picnic tables. Most sites have amazing shade and all are any easy walk to the lake, if not right on it. Note that the last 6-7 miles of road are gravel & rutted in places. Just allow extra time & be willing to drive very slowly at times. It's worth it! Try to make time to hike up to Crystal Lake. It's steep, but there are lots of shady places to rest on the way, and the lake is blissful for swimming in. There are about 18 campsites, most of which have great privacy and shade, and none of which are far from the comfort station. :) and at $12 a night, this campground is a jewel! Come early in the week (and day) to get the most selection. It can fill up, and only the group sites are reservable.

Big Pine is a smaller, off the beaten path gem of a camping site in the Lassen area. It's far…read moresmaller, less frequented and much less known about than other sites nearby, making me hesitant to even share that it exists. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time here and would certainly return if we are back exploring the area. It's a USDA campground, falling under federal forest jurisdiction, so it's different in many ways from the state campsites we are used to. For starters, it's first come, first serve. So you are already trying your luck because there is no one to contact for a reservation ahead of time. Fortunately, there are many other campsites like this in the area, so if they are booked here, you have options. Other differences from state sites: The campsites were much bigger and more spacious. The bathrooms were chemical toilets vs. flush, like at Burney Falls (not a problem since the campground was so small and the host cleaned them frequently.) It's not well marked, either, so it's easy to miss this place. The only downside is that during the summer it is HOT and the tree cover is thin here. No matter which site you choose, expect your camp to be exposed to the sun most of the day. If I did it again, I would definitely bring some sort of big shade structure. The trees in this area are sparse and far between. All in all, consider it a great alternative to the busy, booked-6-months-in-advance sites at Burney Falls and other popular parks. Take your chances at a USDA site and you'll still be close to all the action in the Lassen area!

Such a wonderful experience! We hosted a celebration of life for my mother in law here and we could…read morenot have found a more peaceful and beautiful place to honor her. Russ and Debbie, the owners, were so accommodating, enjoyable, helpful and easy going; people you could just spend all day talking to. There are some RV spaces to camp here so we stayed on site to make set up a little easier on the day of the memorial. We had family that rented a quaint one bedroom cabin on site as well. There is an outdoor covered kitchen area with a huge refrigerator, which allowed us to bring food in advance and prep the day before. It was all so convenient! They were in the path of the Dixie fire, so the drive out there is baron, but don't let that deter you. Once you arrive, you are surrounded by green trees and stunning scenery. It was a perfect hidden gem. We are so pleased with our entire experience at lassen meadows and would absolutely recommend it and use this venue again for other events.
