I have been an animal Mom since I was very little. The majority of my companions have been rescues. From either a shelter, given away because a person could not care for them anymore, and multiple rescues from my backyard. I've had about 4 cats and they all lived very long lives. My last kitty came from the backyard. He loved bathing in the sun outside though. I always kept him in a safe and enclosed area, with me, with him when outside. He spent most of the time inside though. This brought him so much joy and happiness. The smile and gently sleeping in the sun, on his cot made him the happiest kitty ever! Now I come to a point where I'm ready for a new companion. I finally found after months and months of searching for just the right kitty. I felt it with my heart, but when I went to the shelter a while ago, with an application, they now choose to deny me because one rescue kitty was actually outside for a brief time because that's where they came from. Heaven for bid you make your best friend happy. They consider this the worst mistake in the entire world. So, Whatever you do, if you choose to rescue from here, Never, EVER, EVER!!!! mention, you rescued a cat from the streets. They will deny you a new companion, no matter what. No matter how safe they were, no matter how happy they were, no matter how long of a life of joy they live, because of that, don't get your hopes up and get all heartbroken all over again. I'm approved at multiple shelters, and they all knew the above. I happen to find the right one for me, at the place who is deciding to deny this kitty a home with me. read more

I was denied adoption of a cat because "they feel" I am too old. I am 70 years old. A cat normally lives 10-15 years. This is just plain ageism (and maybe discrimination). They didn't even give me the option of finding someone who would take the cat if something did happen to me. But, that could be anyone at any time (accidents, illness). If you are over 65 don't bother to go to this place. Go somewhere else like they told me to do! I think these little "rescues" must get funding based on how many animals they have, hence their reluctance to adopt. read more

One day i applied in both: animal shelter and last hope animal resque. The very next day shelter called me letting me know that im approved, but last hope just sent me a text message that i was not approved. After i asked why, they said they dont know. I called my vet and they never called them to check me. Never called the references as well. They wont answear the phone, and wont call me back. My vet literally told me thats a BS, and they would rather hold cats in cages than place them in loving house. While i was there i took my special needs son couse he was very excited about getting a new cat. Sadly im pretty sure he is the reason why they never processed my application. We own a big house, and already have one cat and a dog in excellent health. Last hope discriminated us and treated us like some kind of criminals not worthy of a cat. Resques like that are the reason why people shop for pets instead of adopting them. read more

The problem is the relationship with their landlord Bideawee is more of a servitude than a business relationship. I inquired about adopting 2 kittens that had been at Petco for about 3 weeks according to Mary from Last Hope who was very nice. I filled out the adoption application, and she let me, my mom, niece and oldest nephew (15) interact with the cats to see if we got along & we did great! A few days later a different woman named Lisa from Last Hope called me & did a brief phone interview asking where I work & past pet owner experience. I explained to her that my previous cat, recently passed away about (3-4 months ago at that point) belonged to my recently deceased grandparents but we lived together so she was more like a family cat. My 3 year old nephew lives w/ me, & she explained they don,t usually let families with young children adopt cats if they've never had experience with any before. I explained that both my 3 year old nephew & 4 year old niece (who met the cats the day prior) have grown up with my previous cat. She proceeds to say "oh well not the 3 year old because, he would have been born in lets see..(she starts trying to do mental math in her head) then says he would've been born in 2021 so he wouldn't have right!?" I said "oh no, my cat passed away about 4 months ago so he did with the expectation of the past 4 months." She replies "oh you're right I'm sorry." I thought that was a bit strange, but figured maybe she just misheard me and thought I said 4 years instead of 4 months. For context, my previous cat was an indoor cat, but she always loved laying in the window in the sun and towards the end of her life, the last week or so she really wanted to lay outside in the sun, so I would sit with her outside. I honestly forgot this because for all of the 16 years we had her, she never went outside. So, when the person calling the references asked my references (my best friend and boyfriend, both who don't live with me) about my cat going outside they were honest and said she was mainly inside but wanted to go out a few times. Later that evening Lisa called me back & left a message saying my application was denied, because they mentioned my cat went outside. I immediately thought, what could they have been talking about & then I remembered! I was like, oh I did forget to mentioned that! So, I wasn't upset at all, disappointed sure, but I understood they were just doing their job. After speaking to my best friend & boyfriend, I called Lisa back just to thank her for her time. She answered & said "You got my message?" I told her "yes & I understand, I explained how I forgot to mention sitting outside with my cat before she died, honestly the grief of that time made everything feel like a blur but truly that's my fault for not mentioning it & I apologize." She proceeded to tell me that both she, and Mary were "disappointed because I seem very nice". I said "no ones more disappointed then me but its okay, God has a plan for everything & I hope the Kittens end up in a good home". She then asked, "oh so the cat was only outside for the last 2 weeks of her life?" I replied "yeah that's all", & proceeded to say thank you again and end the conversation. My one star is because of her next comment, she decided to unnecessarily comment on my relationship. Lisa said when she spoke to the person doing the references she (Lisa) told her (the reference caller) "well that won't be her boyfriend for long, because he was the one who said the cat went outside." Why she decided to say this to me? I don't know because I never gave her anything but kind energy, but it was really unprofessional. I'm not sure if she wanted me to be more upset about getting denied and protest for them to reconsider & because I wasn't she decided to say that? Or if she was just simply making a comment without thinking? W/E the reason, as a professional, you should not make a comment regarding another persons relationship, especially since she has never met me in real life or even spoken to my partner. Further more after speaking to my best friend she said whoever called her was not very nice & even though she gave a glowing review about me she said it seemed they were looking for any reason to deny me. Which is honestly fine, I chalked that all up to them just trying to find the best home for the kittens & if they don't think that's me, that's okay. What I find unacceptable, is Lisa's comment about my relationship. That was extremely unprofessional, you have no idea what people are going through or struggling with, so you should not make unnecessary comments about a customers personal life. Luckily I am in a good place mentally & was able to let it go & ended the conversation politely telling her "It's no ones fault but my own & thank you again for your time, please tell Mary thank you as well". I would not recommend adopting from this shelter but I do hope they improve their communication skills & are more mindful, considerate & kind toward customers going forward. read more

We recently had to help our beloved best friend cross over the rainbow bridge. We had medicines and dog treats some not even used, and we did not want to just throw them away. We decided to donate them to a shelter. We went to Last Hope Animal Rescue because we had gotten our previous dog from there when it was Bideawee. A woman greeted us as we brought the items in. She was polite but there was no compassion in her and I do not recall her even stating sorry for your loss. What we donated was work at least $100 dollars and I thought she might ask us our names to send us an email thank you. Instead after telling her we lost our good boy just 2 days ago she said Oh do you want to look at some dogs? This upset my wife and we just left. I am happy they are helping dogs and cats but a little humanity would have been appreciated. read more

Last Hope was the most helpful and professional animal adoption center I visited on Long Island (and I visited A LOT during my search for a cat companion). After a very poor experience with Ruff House Rescue (10/10 do not recommend), I later went back to look at some cats at Last Hope. Something very helpful about Last Hope is the big room they use specifically for showing cats, which is filled with toys so you can really see their personality. Something not all the rescues/shelters I visited had. Eileen primarily helped with my adoption and she was very good at showing me cats that would fit my needs. Eileen knew their cats personality's inside and out and she (along with other volunteers) takes the time to work with cats before they are adopted. I told Eileen I was looking for a mushy cat that would sit with me, liked to be pet, and would let me pick it up. I went on a Saturday and Eileen told me they had just gotten a handful of very friendly cats. I met with 2. One was a 7 month old tabby and the other a 1 year old grey tabby. I spent time petting and playing with both cats, but decided that I would come back the next day right when they opened and make my choice. I came back the next day and decided on the grey tabby because it was a little bit older and set in his personality. (He also loves to be pet and cuddled!!) I was already approved which meant I was able to have Eileen drop him off to me that same night! Eileen came to my apartment and brought his bed, his blanket, toys, and some food. She helped me get settled in with him and made sure we were both comfortable and answered/went over the paper work with me before she left. It's so nice this shelter brings you supplies for your cat and items that help make your cat more comfortable in their new furever home. With these items especially, their adoption fee is more than reasonable. He spent a little time periodically hiding under my bed, but would come out when you talked to him. That same night my brother and his wife came over to meet my new cat and even with more people around he still came out from his hiding to enjoy some pets and attention. My cat's name is now Mochi and he has been with me for a couple weeks now. He stopped hiding under my bed two days after coming home and now follows me around everywhere I go in my apartment. He recently has discovered he can sit on the window sill and watch what's going on outside. If you are looking for a shelter who is going to take the time to find out what YOU need in a companion, I encourage you to go visit Last Hope in Wantagh. Eileen matched me with the purrfect cat and I am confident one of the volunteers will help you find the purrfect fur baby too! And if you're not a cat person, they also have some very cute dogs and I had a short conversation with the receptionist on that side of the shelter and she was also very polite! Previously the Bide-A-Wee, Last Hope Animal Rescue has come along and continued to provide aid to strayed and abandoned cats and dogs. My family and I are very familiar with this location considering we rescued our first cat from here many years ago. My beloved Smokey was very well taken care of here and when we adopted him into our family they offered us lost cost vet care and free spaying. We had Smokey for 11 wonderful years and he was very loved. Our second/current cat Daisy was rescued from another location. However, we still continue to frequent Last Hope since they're always looking for donations for the animals. Blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, toys, etc. A few days ago I brought in some pillows and towels and one of the workers was so kind enough to give us a tour of their facility. Although it may be small, they use all the resources they have. She was explaining that when animals are dropped off or rescued they have a transitioning process to help them get acquainted with the new space and new environment. That way the animals go under the least amount of stress as possible. They ensure each cat/dog gets attention from the volunteers every day and that their space is maintained. She was explaining that they have an abundance of black cats. For some reason people just don't adopt them as often as the other breeds. If you or you know someone who is looking for a cat, please visit one of their locations and consider rescuing one! The staff is knowledgeable, loving and they truly take pride in what they do. I found a tiny kitten who was almost blind due to infection in his eye on a major road in Queens, NY. I brought him to a few vets in the area all who seemed like they had no interest in helping the poor little guy. One place even quoted me some outrageous price to take care of him. A family friend told me about Last Hope in Wantagh and they took him from me THAT DAY. They had an eye specialist on site and they told me within 20 minutes they already found a foster! I am not exaggerating about any of this! I was coming home from work late and they even stayed open a bit longer for me to get there! After they took him to the back I asked how much I owed them and they said NOTHING! They said "well if you want to donate $20..." and my eyes lit up; I gave them at least 5 times that (maybe more, I don't remember). I couldn't believe how wonderfully humble they were and caring. The complete opposite of the places I found in Queens. Last Hope is now one of the major places I donate money, food, and supplies to just because of this one instance. They truly are an amazing place and everyone there has a spot in heaven waiting for them. read more

It took some thinking to decide if I wanted to write this and the only reason I am is because how heartbroken I am for the pup. I went in yesterday with my girlfriend to see the dogs I am a black woman my girlfriend is a white woman, race tends to be a topic of discussion but I try not to pay attention to those kinds of thing except here it was something I couldn't ignore. When we first arrived the ladies there wouldn't speak to me and barely look at me only my gf. One of the ladies there even made a joke about how they could like her (pointing to my gf) and not like me. When I asked to view a dog they would only bring out the one my gf wanted to see and when asked about the one I wanted to see was met with much resistance and badgered on the neccesities of a dog when we had already let them know we had a lot of animal experience. When they finally brought out Oscar (a beautiful pup) they would ask questions with attitude like how old am I am or If I would even be capable but none of these questions were asked to my gf who had just inquired of a different dog. I loved Oscar we even loved Maddie and wanted so badly to adopt them into our family but I've never felt so uncomfortable and blatantly disrespected that I wanted to leave. If you have personal bias thats your problem but don't bring it into the work place especially when youre trying to find loving homes for these beautiful animals. read more

Wow I just read through all of the bad reviews and I gotta say to you reading this, do NOT let that sway you. I LOVE Last Hope. I have had multiple great experiences with this organization as a whole and they are WAYYY more professional than a handful of others that I won't mention. I have had cats my whole life. I am very picky about where I choose to adopt cats from and have been turned off by many places. This organization really loves and nurtures their animals so that they are READY to be adopted into homes. They answered all of my questions and made me feel so comfortable. They let me take my time looking at their selection (I love that you can see who they have available on the site and instagram). I love that the cats have all thier shots and spay/neuter done prior to adoption. They are a PHENOMENAL staff and it is an honor to adopt a furbaby from Last Hope. I adopted one male kitten a year ago and he is a loving playful well-behaved cat. We just adopted a female kitten today (Raquel) and couldn't be happier. I came in looking for a dog to call my own. After being given a hard time about not filling out an application beforehand, I fell in love with a dog that I was told was available for adoption. When I left sign was put on the dogs cage that read adoption pending. I have own countless dogs in my lifetime. I gave references, including my long time veterinarians information. No one was called. When I called back a few days later, I was told that there was someone that came in before me to adopt the dog and therefore the dog went to them. I do not find them to be honest. i came into this shelter with my mom and dad after we buried our dog in the cemetery near by, we were looking to see if I could volunteer to walk the dogs. the lady that gave me all the details of dog walking was very nice and knew what she was talking about. after discussing the dog walking, I wanted to see the cats just for fun, so I went into the cat room with one of the workers and got to see a bunch of lovely cats. i was interested in this cute black cat that kept rolling on her back and licked my finger when I put it near the cage. she had a sister but I didn't really get to see her because she was hiding. a few weeks later, with much convincing, I returned to the shelter with my mom and discussed adopting both of the cats. turns out, the black cat was going to be adopted without her sister by some other person, but the adoption was pending. when I came to the shelter with my mom, and we showed interest in adopting BOTH cats, they let us adopt both despite one of the cats already having a pending adoption! I'm so grateful that they let us adopt both cats together, instead of letting the first potential adopter just adopt one. that shows that the workers that really care about the cats well-being's enough to pend an adoption long enough to hopefully find someone who would adopt both cats. it has been almost a year since we adopted the cats and they are so so amazing!! the black cat, who I named Luna, still rolls on her back and cuddle, and her sister, a white and black called whom I named Zelda, is super crazy and funny. I am so blessed that we were able to adopt both cats. also, the ladies helping us with our adoption process were so nice and informative, and everyone we talked with knew what they were talking about. it's a well run place and hopefully I will be able to volunteer to walk the dogs soon! read more

After two disappointing experiences at other places this truly was my last hope to adopt a family dog, the entire staff from the get-go were so friendly and helpful while also guiding me, I can't say enough about the boss Letty and also Phyllis who did the transaction with Nelson or "Rocky" as I am now call him! I was looking for a beagle but this lil guy stole my heart with his eyes and the fact that he is half beagle mixed with black lab is an amazing combo I think!a "beagador if u will! I love the fact that they did all the vaccinations, shots,microchip etc..and also taught him good behavior as he has already demonstrated in my home today by going to the bathroom outside, playing gentle with my kids and listening to orders,on top of all this I got a bag of goodies including food, snacks, toys, even a sweater! I had a dog at home and the trainers were so wonderful about having my dog meet the new puppy from Last Hope. It's now 6 months later and the boys are the best of friends and brothers!!! Awful. I adopted a dog 1 month ago I was very misled by the foster about how potty trained the dog was. I was told pad trained, which was not true. The dog held her pee until she just couldn't. More like the wasn't let out at all. Additionaly, the foster had her spayed and looked like it was healed until one of the stiches started poking through the skin. The skin grew over the stiches and some werent removed. Pure laziness. Very disapointing experince. Will not be rescuing from here ever again. read more

Two of my four rescue cats came from Last Hope and they are thriving many years later; however, the Last Hope website is atrocious. There is no one reachable by phone and even the number on the annual donation request is only a voice mail which directs callers to its website. I called to donate 3 unopened bags of a top quality dog food (after I lost my 15 year old Shepherd rescue) and was unable to reach anyone.Finally, I donated the food to another rescue group. Moreover, rather than showing an array of adoptable pets, the website now forces its viewers to see one cat or dog at a time. It is much more user-friendly to allow potential adopters to see multiple photos so that they can click on any number which catch the eye. That said, the cats at the scattered facilities are happy and well-treated and the rescue group carefully screens its potential adopters. All of this is a plus. read more
