Transparency with pet management is KEY to community confidence. Seeing a dog was not possible when I visited last week. But they offered an appointment another day, despite no other visitors there. They showed me a few photos of nice pets they have available and the adoptable are posted online. Hopefully all are listed though I couldn't see. They let me see the cats the same day.. They were polite and seemed concerned for the animals well being. So much change here so hopefully it will become a No Kill.. the residents would support that.

They do not want any responsibility for the welfare of the animal they released instead of trying to socialize a young feral to get them adopted.. I have a feral who comes around to eat and had sores all over her face. I called the town and Tim told me they do not have a veterinarian on premises. Its not their responsibility. Whose responsibility is it? I was able to trap with the help of John Debacker and brought to a vet for treatment. It turns out cat is a female and has allergies to either a flea bite or wherever she is sleeping may be the bush or tree . The bottom line is there is no reason why with all of our tax dollars we pay that this shelter does not treat their release animals.. The town of Hempstead does. They have a veterinarian who treats any feral that is in need of treatment in the town of Hempstead and they are a non-kill shelter. I have a friend who lives in the town of Hempstead who had a sick feral that they feed. They brought it into the shelter. They kept the cat for a week treated it and also sent them home with special food to fatten her up . This should be done to all shelters across Long Island . I also sent a email to the senator was told they will bring this up in the next board meeting. Never heard back. Probably threw the email out. PS I asked Tim don't they have socializer's? He told me no . Why is this ? Cause they don't want anyone on the outside to see what is going on? Town of Hempstead has many volunteers that come everyday to socialize and walkers for the dogs. Their mission is to save and home as many cats and dogs as possible. This an extraordinary animal rescue. I have been in the cat rescue circle for over 20 years and have worked with many rescues through my website, and volunteer for a local rescue. Over the years I have heard glowing reports about Animal Lifeline Corporation but never knew anyone there as they are on Long island and I am in Brooklyn. About a month ago the president of Animal Lifeline Corporatipn contacted me and asked if I would make them a web site which I agreed to do. (http://animal-lifeline-corp.com ) It was only then that I learned just how good they are. To begin with, they are one of the very few rescues that does not ask for an adoption fee. All they ask for is a donation of whatever you can afford. This is very unusual. Most rescues have high adoption fees. What this says to me is that the animals are more important than money, and the concern of Animal Lifeline is to find them good homes. They do not have a shelter and do not take in pets that people no longer want. They rescue strays from the streets and have several fosters who take care of them. Animal Lifeline Corp is very active with their TNR program. After trapping and vetting (which includes spay/neutering, checking for diseases, and other medical care) some ferals will always remain feral. These animals are returned to their original sites and fed and monitored. By curtailing the breeding cycles they greatly help to reduce the appalling number of strays killed in local shelters. I'd give this group 10 Stars if I could!

On 6/6/24 I went to visit the Babylon Animal Shelter (BAS) to see if a found dog was one that was…read morelost from Manhattan, NYC, in November, 2023. While the pup was not the dog we were looking for, the staff at the shelter made the experience a positive one, under the most distressing circumstances. Here's what's good about the shelter: 1. When most shelters don't pick up the phone or require you to leave a message and call you back, sometimes hours later, not only did BAS pick up the phone to talk to the lost pup's (Rosie, the Mini Goldendoodle) mom, but they looked at her Instagram fotos to see if the found pup might be a match. The BAS staff talked a lot among themselves to share thoughts and ultimately suggested that Rosie's mom come in to see the found pup. 2. When we arrived at BAS, the staff could not have been nicer. They handled our team of 3 women's emotions with great empathy, knowing that we were either going to experience a miracle or another distressing loss, if the found pup wasn't a match. 3. While the found pup was not a match for our missing Rosie, the staff gave us ample time to really be certain. They were kind and patient. 4. As you can imagine, we've been to a number of shelters in search of Rosie. What was remarkable about BAS was the following: -While many shelters wreak of urine or "animal scent" - we noted immediately, that bad odors were not present. The place is clean and organized. - We also noticed that the room that we went into with about 10 dogs, was quiet. There are no dogs incessantly barking or crying and whining. The volume of noise is so loud at some shelters that you can't even have a conversation - because especially the dogs are barking non-stop. It was actually quite stunning. The dogs seemed content and not agitated. - Each pup had their own clean bedding and did not have to sleep or lay down on a hard metal floor. The pup we saw even had a dog bed in her crate. It's a lot of work to keep that bedding clean, as you can imagine. 5. When we left, we could see the team anxiously awaiting our decision about a match. And while it was not, the young woman who took us back to the kennels was optimistic and shared her hopes that Rosie would be found. It was uplifting to hear, given we were all on the verge of tears having been disappointed again. I just had to leave a review given the positive vibe BAS has all around, from the observable care of the animals, the cleanliness of the facility and the well trained and good mannered staff - they made a tough situation a lot less hard. I highly recommend this shelter for anyone looking for small to medium size dogs of all ages. They are located directly next to the Hempstead animal shelter if you want to check out both shelters in one trip. The dogs at this shelter are a lot more calm and seem less stressed than the typical shelter environment. There are 2 driveways, but make sure to use the second one to visit the adoption center (the first one is staff only). They also have a large variety of cats available. They are open until 7pm Monday-Saturday and until 6pm on Sundays. I noticed they don't answer the phone when we called ahead, but don't let that deter you, they were very nice and welcoming upon arrival. All the dogs seem to be walked often, which definitely helps with potty training them. Overall highly recommend.

The application is pretty standard for pet adoptions, in my opinion. Personal references, Vet references (if you've owned previous animals), do you work or perhaps are retired? These along with other basic questions so the Adoption department can try and match you with an animal whose temperament fits your lifestyle. Of course they cannot guarantee certain things but, I feel their efforts are done in good faith. After speaking with a very personable Adoption specialist named David S, we set up a meet and greet. The team thought Sparky may be a good fit for our family. We hit the jackpot and Sparky thought we were perfect for him as well!! He was given up to date shots and given a clean bill of health. We signed the required documents, paid a reasonable fee (s) and took him to his new forever home! We were treated kindly by each employee/volunteer we interacted with. We thank them for the important work they do. Please consider adoption when looking for a fur baby. Please consider TOH. I'm sure your experience will be as wonderful as ours was.
