They did make me sign an agreement not to have other pets and not to leave him alone around small children and babies. after bringing him home I could see why, he has a little aggressive play in him. It was a long process but very thorough they checked all my references checked in with my vet and came and did a home visit. I can not understand this group. We stopped by and were told we could not see the dog but to fill out an application. We did told it would be 600$ adoption fee and provided references. A rather rude phone call latter and decided to check their reviews. 2 out of 4!!!Apparently this is part for the course. We can not support this group and decided to go else where. Went to adopt a dog but you have fill out an application first for specific dog. I saw a few I liked online so didn't think it would be a big deal to view what they have. See some people waiting 10 days to get an answer on a adoption. They should be able to put a hold on an adoption you picked and get back to you in no more than a day or two. Some places will check you references while you wait and hold the pet while you wait. Poor animals need faster attention to get a new loving home. read more

Went to visit, but visiting is discouraged. The woman in the office was sort of brusque because I didn't have an appointment and didn't know the procedure. The procedure is: You identify a pet on the Bobbi & the Strays website. You fill out an application, and wait. You're vetted, and if you pass whatever requirements this shelter has, you may then make an appointment. Maybe then you actually get to see a real-live animal, but I am just speculating here. I understand this shelter has its methods. But it seems odd to not be able to make a connection with a potential pet in person. Unfortunately, I am beyond disappointed with my experience at Bobbi and The Strays. I came by to visit and was shown several cats, one of which I fell in love with. I immediately put in an application and was told that, in about a week, I would be able to take him home. As part of the application process, you have to put 3 references and agree to a home visit. However, two days later, no one called any of my references or reached out to me about the home visit- or AT ALL. I decided to take action and call them myself about any updates regarding the cat. I was told that someone else was already called about adopting my cat and it was then that I understood my application was never even reviewed. The person I spoke with on the phone said that, when there are multiple applications in for a pet, the person applying is usually informed of that. I was not. The person on the phone also told me they would give me a call the following day to let me know of any more updates. I never received any call. Overall, I am completely disgusted with this experience. It feels impossible to adopt any pet from here, and their lack of communication is appalling. For reference, I came in on a Saturday the 15th and by Monday the 17th, when *I* called them, I was told the cat was already going to be adopted by someone who put in an application at the beginning of the month. I just wonder why this information was never relayed to me to begin with, why they got my hopes up, and why the first cat we were shown was one that they never planned to let us adopt in the first place. If I had never called myself to check in, it seems I would never have been updated at all and would have continued waiting. I reached out and spoke to Bobbi on behalf of a friend who needed to rehome two dogs. She seemed a bit out of it so I said I would call her back. She told me it was OK and she was able to speak. She asked me to send pictures of the dogs to her phone with some information. I did do that, and she never got back to me as promised. She did tell me on the phone that I can call an upstate boarding kennel that she uses. she said, as for my friend she can sleep in the car with the dogs. I was pretty shocked that she never reached back out via text or phone as promised. She was not of any help and I'm very disappointed in most of these rescues, that I have reached out to on her behalf. I understand that rescues are overwhelmed with dogs but that's an unprofessional way to conduct yourself. read more

Let me tell you, this whole thing was a rollercoaster ride that I don't want anyone else to go through...and mind you, this is the short version of my story. Basically, I was out of work for like 9 months because of an injury and I was looking into getting an emotional support animal. Someone recommended Bobbi and the Strays to me and I found this cute dog named Tootsie Roll on their website. He was a 2 year old "terrier mix" and I fell in love with him. I filled out the application and things moved pretty fast from there. But then, they started giving me inconsistent information about Tootsie. They told me he had food allergies and that he might be younger than what the website said. I was transparent about my situation and even asked if I could adopt him before his surgery so he could get used to me. They said it was possible, but then changed their minds towards the end of the process. I did a home visit with a volunteer named Linda and was honest about everything, but she just kept saying how nice my apartment was and how lucky Tootsie would be to have me as his mom. I got all the documents and supplies I needed and my family was even helping out. I literally had him for 3 days...But then Linda started calling me and pressuring me to choose between Tootsie and work. She made me feel guilty for going back to work, even though I had been out of work for months. She even took credit for delaying the adoption because she had concerns about me. I was so upset and inconsolable when I had to bring Tootsie back to the shelter. Everyone there was rude and judgmental, even though I explained everything that had happened. I donated all the supplies I had bought to the next family, but they were too busy being nasty to accept it. This whole experience was traumatic and I still cry about it even months later. I don't think I'll ever adopt from Bobbi and the Strays again or from anyone at this current moment in time. The whole thing was and still is a lot to deal with. I hope Tootsie gets a family that loves him just as much as me and my family did. He deserved better. Me and my family deserved better. read more

I am an animal lover and would never vouch for someone if I didn't think they would be amazingly loving and caring parents! She denied them. Still don't know the reason nor does it matter at this point. it's sad to me that this woman is denying caring loving people from saving a senior cat from living out its days in her stale cages. I should have looked at the reviews first smh so basically my story is I'm a 32 year old male my grandmother recently passed away and that's kind of one of the major reasons why I was trying to get a puppy from them they spoke to my 3 references everything went well then when it came time to setup the in person visit they for me and family to see the dog they kinda said I should look someplace else here's some insight I told them in advance I live in a house with my mom ,aunt and grandfather and that if I come to visit the dog my family doesn't own a car it would be just me and my mom because my grandfather isnt really mobile it would be hard for him to come and someone would have to stay at home with home so I got denied because my grandfather could not come it seems like the Freeport location has some issues there and the atlas location is the better one to deal with but honestly I didn't even wanna bother with Bobbi strays after that situation I ended up contacting Second Chance rescue and had a way smoother experience and should be getting my baby girl in about a week I feel bad for anyone who had a bad experience I am a hardcore dog lover and was super hurt that they wouldn't let me adopt because of something out of my control read more

If you are an older person and are looking to adopt a younger dog from Bobbi and the Strays, please spare yourself the heartache. I found a dog I fell in love with. We bonded and the adoption was going to go through. Later, Bobbi the owner, told me, you cannot have the dog because you are too old. She said I will give you an older one but you cannot have a younger one. I was devastated. I assured her I had family and if anything should happen to me they would take care of the dog. What she said to me is that you can't depend on family because they never come through for you. What a terrible thing to say about family. I became emotional hearing everything she was saying and she accused me of stressing her out. How could anyone with an ounce of humanity in them not become emotional hearing the things she was saying. Later my son went to the shelter and spoke with Bobbi and told her he would adopt the dog and let the dog live with me. In the event something happened to me, the dog would be his but she still refused. It was a heartbreaking experience for me. read more

Bobbi put my son through a rigorous application process, checked his references, cleared adoption with his landlord, had him visit the dog he applied for, and then she made a home visit where she did not indicate any issues. She said she would call him the next day and she didn't call. When my son called to inquire about proceeding with the adoption, he was told he was denied because she didn't like the exterior of his building. It was inconsiderate and cruel to drag him through a two-month process only to deny him for no good reason. I would not trust her. read more

Stopped by today and was very disappointed. I called at 11 am when they opened and asked to see a specific dog. The woman said they have a few applications already but I could still come in to see him. It took 30 min to drive there and when I arrived, they turned me away, saying that they will not be showing him anymore and will be selecting out of the applications they received. They did not apologize or even let me see him. They even said they don't know who told me that I could see him and would not acknowledge their mistake. They wasted my time and were not respectful at all. I will not be looking into adopting their other dogs from this shelter given their insincerity or consider giving donations. Do not waste your time or energy! This is the MOST unprofessional, unorganized, poorly run animal shelter I have EVERRRR experienced. My bf & I went there to adopt a puppy. They showed us three options and we fell in love with one of them. We then put in an application for 3 different puppies and were told that we would be contacted. However, no one contacted us. We went back the following week and all 3 dogs were already adopted. Very disappointing feeling! We decided to give them another chance. We were told they received 9 puppies and wouldn't be able to see them until next week Saturday because they needed to be seen by the vet. Went back next Saturday and were told all 9 puppies were already adopted! AGAIN VERY DISAPPOINTING! At this point, it was pointless coming here but they insisted on showing us other dogs that we weren't interested in at all! (We asked for a puppy & they showed us dogs 5 years old & older) Every dog was basically scary, blind, or mangy. When showing the dogs, they either bring them outside to you & you stand in the dirty, cold, disgusting yard with them OR they bring you into a 'meet & greet' room that smells so foul! It will literally take your breath away! Finally we picked a dog we liked & they lied to us about his history. This poor dog is absolutely insane! There isn't any communication between the office staff & the volunteers who handle the animals. They send various untrained people into your home to do the home check. I adopted a cat from here, in August of 2014. I explained that I had a small dog at home. I was assured that the cat was fostered with small dogs and there was no problem. The cat was going to be two, in May 2015. In the beginning, he swiped at my dog a time or two. I tried to work on getting them to at least tolerate each other. He never really bonded with my teens and spent most of his day, hiding. The last straw was March of this year when he came over to sit on my lap. My dog was already on my lap. She, not being an Alpha female, wanted to get up. I made her stay and kept reassuring her it was okay. Totally unprovoked, he swiped at her! He came dangerously close to taking out her eye!! I bought him back the next day and explained the situation to the shelter. Surprisingly, he was placed back on their website with no mention of the fact he doesn't get along with dogs! The owner and staff are pleasant, for the most part. I did come across a few employees who didn't have answers to basic questions, I posed to them about how things work there. I think their hearts are in the right place. I would try them again if I decide to adopt. read more

If you want to jump through hoops over the course of weeks to adopt a pet then this is the place to go. After having my household meet a dog, having a home visit, and waiting two and a half weeks I finally gave up on trying to adopt a pet here. The office gives you a run around and leaves you hanging unless you call and pester them. After a home visit I was told I would find out if I'd get the dog within two days. Never got a call, so I called them only to be told there was another home visit 5 days from then and I would find out after that home visit if I could adopt the dog. This place was honestly horrible. Don't bother coming here. There are plenty of other animals that need homes in hundreds of other shelters that don't require you to wait weeks or jump through hoops. BATS sucks. I must say that I do not understand the negative reviews of Bobbi and the Strays. Everyone there that we came in contact with was so nice and helpful whether it was on the phone or in person. You could tell they really cared about all of the animals in their care and wanted very much to find them good homes. They are not a 'First come first serve' adoption agency. They want to make sure their animals go to the best homes possible so some people may have been disappointed because they were not chosen to adopt the pet of their choice. Because we had some time constraints of our own, they completed the adoption process quickly and got our new addition into our home quickly. We adopted a 4 year old Yellow Lab named Simba. He was in excellent health and very clean. He is also the best pup ever. We couldn't be happier with him or with Bobbi and the Strays. read more

I called to inquire about a dog. The Bobby lady is insanely rude and her attitude is disgusting. I was living in an apartment in NY and explained I would be moving to a house in NJ. I was told I couldn't adopt because I was not a NY resident but I was at the time. I said you'd let someone in a cramped apartment adopt but not someone with a yard for a dog to play and exercise in! It hardly seems like it's in the best interest of the dog. I understand they said they need to go to the home to view and inspect if it's adequate space for a dog I was willing to let them make a visit. Thank you, Bobbi & the Strays! We adopted our sweet Murray over the weekend and he is perfect for us (have some work to do on potty & leash training, but as expected.) As many other reviewers mentioned, we, too, didn't get the dog we originally applied for. We originally drove out to meet two other dogs, who would have been far too anxious living in an urban setting with no yard -- we and the staff mutually agreed that it wasn't a good fit. Instead, the staff guided us to meet Murray, who -- as a teeny, 5lb senior dog with no teeth whose hobbies are cuddling and now being carried in my purse -- was such a great match for us as two adults (no small kids) in a Manhattan apartment with plenty of time to cater to the little guy's needs. Bobbi & the Strays runs a complex operation -- while there may be some hiccups (I was a nervous mama waiting to hear back if we'd been selected for Murray! Virtual home visit was pretty impromptu! etc.), I commend them for their amazing dedication to providing a good life for so many animals. read more

We went to visit the shelter to look for a cat. We found a cat we wanted to adopt, but had to wait a week for them to do a home visit/ call our landlord/etc. I appreciate the diligence- but that means our cat was sitting in a cage in a shelter for an extra week when there we were- wanting to take her home! After we brought our kitty home, we took a look at all of the paper work from the shelter. The paperwork went back and forth listing our kitty as a male and as a female, and there was a note from a vet visit that questioned the presence of feline AIDS (FIV). I called the shelter to see what the follow up was after the vet's concerns, and they said there wasn't any. Also they couldn't comment on the gender discrepancy, and told me to bring her to the vet. Important to note- we already had another cat, and were looking specifically for a female kitty (and one that didn't have a highly contagious infectious disease that most often results in death). The shelter was aware of that. After bringing our kitty to the vet, we found out she (that's right, she's a she!) did not likely have feline AIDS (after expensive testing), but did have a terrible anal gland infection. Our kitty was literally leaking diarrhea and blood from her rectum for 4 weeks after adopting her. We are still working on resolving her gastrointestinal issues with our vet- 3 months later (read: very expensive). The shelter never called to follow up with how our adoption was going, or even to find out my kitty's status after calling with my concerns about her gender and serious health questions. After giving us such a hard time about adopting her without going through all the hoops and loops, you'd think they would be concerned about her status once we brought her home? We love our new kitty, and are grateful for getting her, but this shelter did do the right thing. read more

My bf and I are so in love with our rescue dog! We saw her online and went to Bobbi's to meet her in person. We met her in the yard and filled out an application the same day. They called our references the same day, and scheduled the home check the following few days. The next weekend we picked up our baby girl. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I felt judged because my bf and I both work full time.. but we work different schedules. Sometimes they overlap, but we have a walker who lives in the building. Just because we are young and work full time doesn't mean we can't be good dog owners! We visited Bobbi & the strays in Freeport, looking to adopt a dog. They don't let you see the dogs in the shelter, they will bring a specific dog out to you that they feel suits your needs. Fine, whatever. When we first arrived, we stood in the office for 5 minutes as 5-6 employees completely ignored us. One texting on her phone the whole time while talking to Bobbi. Bobbi came off as incredibly rude. When they finally acknowledged our existence, they didn't even listen to what we had to say. They showed us 1 dog. We couldn't wait to get out of there. Unless they have a specific dog you're looking for that you saw online, I would avoid visiting this rescue. We ended up adopting from another rescue and we couldn't be happier with our new dog & the rescue we got her from. read more

As a life long animal lover, I came across Bobbi and the strays. I have been adopting cats my entire life and my cats have had lives well lived and been cared for with great love by my entire family. When I initially called, I spoke to a very rude woman. I asked if they had any kittens up for adoption. They told me that they had 4 cream color kittens. 2 boys and 2 girls, that would be ready in about 3-4 weeks. She said I should send in application. I did. I followed up every week to check on the kittens. Every person I spoke to was ruder and more unfriendly than the next... almost abusive as if they couldn't be bothered with me. Finally, they told me that they would not allow me to adopt a kitten because my 1 cat that I have was declawed 14 years ago. I told her that i would never declaw a kitten due to the fact that it is now illegal in the state of New York. When I told her this she said she would have the "manager" call me back. I never heard back. When I called back 3 days later, the same woman answered and told me that they never had any cream color kittens and that I didn't know what I was talking about!!!. I couldn't believe my ears! This is an organization that begs for money to buy them food for their animals, but clearly has ZERO integrity and rude people and liars. Please stay away from them and stop giving them $$$. They are liars and crooks. read more

DO NOT GO HERE THESE PEOPLE ARE UNPROFESSIONAL, LIARS, AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS IN THEIR CHARGE. My husband and I went in to see a dog they had posted on their website on a Friday at 4pm. We go into their teeny tiny office and are directed to read their rules for adoption and give our picture ID's and sign in with our address etc. Why you need picture ID's to meet an animal is beyond me. Nevertheless they find the one person in charge of bringing out the dogs and we wait almost 10 minutes for someone to bring out the pup. We go right outside the office and the handler makes us sit on a bench and meet this mutt. We ask if we can go in the yard and play with him (why wouldn't you do that from jump???) and so we go. Every question I asked the answer was "I don't know, I'm only here one day a week/I couldn't answer that". I guess it's too much to find out if the dog eliminates in the cage or holds it to go outside?? Or if he is good with other dogs?? I asked about other applicants (they don't do first come first serve, they do whoever they like the best for the dog, which personally I think is DISCRIMINATORY) and they mentioned others have tried but it hasn't worked out. Then finally we go back in the office and tell them we want to fill out an application. We stand there for another 5 minutes while the staff talks to each other, talks on the phone, texting, and dealing with another family who came in instead of finishing up with us. We are just standing there when one of them basically asks what's going on, and I tell her we are waiting for an application. We take our time filling out everything but our social security numbers and give it to them. They tell me they'll get back to us in about a week. The VERY NEXT DAY someone calls and says that the dog is being adopted and going to be going home the next day (Sunday). I was pretty upset because we ASKED and no one said they were so far along in the adoption process for this dog!!! Or so I thought. Just called today and asked if the dog was still available (not revealing that I had already applied for him) and I was told YES, but they are not taking any new applications at this time. WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THE TIME OUT OF YOUR DISORGANIZED OFFICE AND CALL ME PERSONALLY AND DELIBERATELY LIE???? Absolutely horrible, this is a true killer of "Adopt don't shop". This is why people go to pet stores. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. We would have given that dog a good home and he is still in the shelter. Why?? read more

Bobbi has filled my home with love once again. This weekend, my husband & I adopted our third dog from this shelter. Our Maltese passed away in Feb and I am heartbroken. We were looking for the "right" dog and Bobbi came through. We went to Freeport to meet "Maverick" and he fit in perfectly with us and our pets. I can't thank Bobbi and her workers/volunteers for their tireless work. They are the reason these animals have a chance at life. Rich is outstanding and needs to be recognized - the dogs love this man and he told me about each one. The time & love spent with these animals is incredible. We are so thankful for Bobbi & the Strays for approving us to adopt Frosty (who has been renamed Ghost). We've applied to other dog shelters in the city many times and were either turned away because we were rejected without given a reason or never heard from them. Our experience with Bobbi & the Strays was the total opposite. The folks at Bobbi & The Strays called us up several days after submitting an application, answered our questions regarding the dog (whom they gushed about constantly on how much of a good boy he is), were on time in scheduling a virtual house check and got back to us within a few weeks on our approval. The staff seemed very busy so it took a while to get back to us but they were knowledgably on the dog's behavior and the interview process for us was thorough but not overwhelming or intrusive as other shelters/adoption facilities can be these days (adopting a dog in NY has become as competitive as getting a job!) Ghost needed some training on leash reactivity when we first got him but now we are in love with him and has become an integral part of our family. That said, we cannot thank the folks at Bobbi & The Strays enough for what they've done for us. read more

OK - the shelter needs a bit of a re-vamp but it is no reflection of Bobbi and the Strays. They literally just took over this shelter from a previous animal shelter group. So it was pre-exisiting - that is why it needs lots and lots of work. But still a great place. They also inherited more than 200 animals (in addition to all of the animals that Bobbi and the Strays already had) when they acquired this shelter. The volunteers that deal with the animals are so dedicated and you can tell they truly love these dogs and cats. They are also working hard and trying to work fast to get the shelter fully operatiional. So stop by - maybe you will find your new best friend. : - ) I got my two kitties from Bobbi and the Strays - but from their Queens Adoption Center located in Glendale. Now they have two locations - one in Queens and now one on Long Island. I wish Bobbi and her group all the best with their expansion! read more

My first time at the shelter was the night before Hurricane Irene .. besides being amazed at how clean everything was ( I spent an hour or more in the cat area -- I got to see all the cats and their environment up close) I was truly amazed by the dedication of the staff and volunteers. They worked round the clock (literally) to make sure all the animal were safely evacuated. I was so inspired I have kicked up my personal efforts to help animals, and have connected with many local rescue groups, all who have nothing but the highest regards for BATS! I also foster cats for BATS.. and they came to me healthy and in very good spirits. read more

What a terrible shelter. They are cold on the phone and take a long time to do anything. After over a week of processing my application they had me make an appointment for my husband and children to come pick out one of the kittens I was interested in. We picked out a kitten and they said they would be in touch for a home visit. They called three days later to tell me the cat was adopted. Myself and my kids were disappointed. Also, the cat area smelled awful. I went through Last Chance Rescue and we got a kitten and had a wonderful experience. I would NOT recommend this shelter! read more

Disorganized!! I contacted the queens location about a dog; they told me that it was at Freeport location , I called Freeport and they said they never had the dog. Finally we got a confirmation of the dog's location and it was just adopted. Oh when I called about the availability, they ask if the dog was still on the site. It was and was told told "then he is available", but really not. So if you are serious about adopting a dog, you will get a bunch of crap and lose out on the dog you are interested in. read more
