WOW......I didn't think mofongo was possible in the US!!!! And that shrimp, better than anything I've had at top end restaurants....

I recommend that anyone looking for an authentic Latin American dining experience go to Latino Legacy Restaurant because of the inviting atmosphere and delicious food that takes one back to Latin America. This past summer, I spent six weeks in Peru eating authentic Peruvian food from a comedor, or community kitchen, outside of Lima. Now that I'm back in United States, I've been nervous to try to make the recipes myself and mess them up and haven't heard of any restaurant that would do them justice. When I heard of Latino Legacy Restaurant and saw their menu of authentic Latin American recipes, I knew I just had to try it. My friend, who was in Peru with me, and I went last Saturday and immediately felt at home with the inviting atmosphere. When we walked in, we heard the fútbol games playing on the TV along with Spanish music coming from the speakers, saw the yellow and red walls and the ceiling dotted with paper decorations, and smelled the spices in the air. The male employee working greeted us with a big smile and allowed us to choose a table. We sat down at a red and white checkered table. My friend and I ordered water, and he brought them out along with chips and refried beans that were a perfect starter for our meal. The menu was in both Spanish and English and had a variety of Latin American food popular in places such as Peru, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador. We both ordered and waited anxiously to see how authentic the food would taste from a restaurant in the middle of the United States. The service was quick, and he brought out our food piping hot. I ordered lomo saltado and a pupusa revuelta with pork, cheese, and beans. Never before had I tried pupusa revuelta, but I found that the thick corn tortilla and filling was absolutely delicious. The lomo saltado was what I had been waiting months for, and the first bite of the stir fry instantly took me back to Peru. The dark brown sauce was tangy, the steak was tender and juicy, the fries were crispy, and the tomatoes and onions were the perfect sweetness to top the dish off. It was an extremely flavorful meal that paired well with the side of white rice. Latino Legacy Restaurant took me right back to Peru. This restaurant serves delicious Latin American food, gives great service, and has an inviting atmosphere. I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for those three things. When I told the rest of the people that went to Peru with me about this restaurant, they all got really excited, and we all plan on going together next week. read more

My husband and I saw this restaurant as we were driving by and intrigued by the name, we decided to stop and see what it was. We almost didn't go in because there was a big party in progress, but as we turned away the proprietress came out and said "Come in, come in, we have another room!" She was a nice lady, who didn't speak much English, but she was very friendly and tried her best to answer our questions about what various things on the menu were. The restaurant is very utilitarian in appearance on the inside, there are no tablecloths or much decoration, and the menu was not proof-read by someone who knows English very well. This is not a place to go to if you are looking for great ambiance. However, these are not criteria my husband and I care much about, we care about the food, so on to that. Not being terribly familiar with Latin American food (this is NOT a Mexican restaurant), most of the menu items were unfamiliar to us, but they sounded good. I ended up ordering a Puerto Rican dish called Mofongo, which if I understood the proprietress correctly is a plantain dish. It was mashed with lots of garlic and I chose to have it served with the pork, which was delicious. The pork was chopped in bite-sized pieces and had good flavor and was in a base of sauteed onions and tomatoes. My husband ordered a dish called "Camarones Entomatados" or "Shrimp Sauteed with Tomatoes", which he was very happy with. The shrimp and tomatoes were very garlicky and rich in flavor. To drink I had the Tamarind Juice and my husband had the Horchata Salvadorena, which turned out to be similar to the standard Mexican horchata, but with a slightly different, good, flavor. The proprietress said the difference between the Mexican and Salvadoran Horchatas is that the Salvadoran has squash blended into it. The beverage list also included such interesting things as Soursop Juice, Passion Fruit Juice, Guava Juice, and something called "Chicha Morada", which is apparently made of purple corn, pineapple and cinnamon. Of course there were the normal fountain drinks too. We thought the price quite reasonable for what was obviously from scratch cooking, with our check for the two dinners and two beverages coming to $29. The time it took from between ordering the meal and when it arrived on the table was a bit slow (maybe a half an hour), maybe due to the big party in the other room, maybe not, I don't know, but the food was very good so it was worth the wait. The proprietress said they had only just opened in December (2012) and this was her first restaurant. When I asked her about the items on the menu she said that the food is from all over Latin America, but that she is from El Salvador. She encouraged us to come back and next time try the pupusas, which are apparently her specialty. I went to Latino Legacy yesterday not knowing what to expect. What I found was WONDERFUL food and service. How nice to find this PuertoRican/Latin American food right here in Omaha. Mostly all Latino restaurants in Omaha are Mexican. Nice to see other Latino cuisines introduced. I highly recommend it. read more

My daughter (who is super picky) took me here Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and WOW! The food was amazing! The chips and bean dip were tasty and we ordered the fried sweet plaintains as an appetizer and they came with a white dipping sauce that added some additional flavor but not too sweet. These would be good for dessert too. Daughter ordered the chicken and fried rice which came with fried green plaintains. She went on and on about the chicken-very fresh and moist. I ended up stealing her plaintains as I thought they were amazing. I asked the waitress for advice and she recommended the Mofongo with garlic shrimp. Never having tried Mofongo before I was a little leary, but I needn't have worried because it was incredible! The garlic butter sauce complimented the Mofongo wonderfully and the shrimp were plump and plentiful. So much so that I enjoyed leftovers the next day. When we complimented our waitress, she said that everything is made from scratch everyday. Also, she said if we call ahead and order they will have it ready for us (I have a tight lunch hour).
