I have no idea what that means, but they have good sandwiches. What to get: A Prosciutto sandwich with Fresh Mozzarella added, maybe What else: Expect an upcharge to add Fresh Mozz How to improve: Don't upcharge so much for Fresh Mozz (sigh) Nick's is a little run-down grocery store which sort-of feels like walking into a check-cashing shop or an urban convenience store that just happens to have a wonderful old-school NY-NJ style Italian deli inside. The deli itself is great, and makes a lot of awesome sandwiches for decent prices. As I said, I don't like the weird upcharges for certain ingredients, but so be it. It makes the prices of a sandwich soar from decent to ridiculous. The sandwiches aren't altogether authentic Italian NY-NJ style, but they are very good. I loved the parts of it that I had fresh, however when I had the rest of the sandwich a little later it had gotten extremely squidgy and soggy because they use a regular loaf of bread rather than anythng hard or Italian. Again, makes it less authentic but still very tasty. Despite these remarks, I haven't had a sandwich this good in the Richmond area before, so you should give it a try. And if it were Niche Produce, then they'd only sell unusual and hard to get hipster vegetables and sandwiches. Whereas if it wer Nix Produce, it would close down soon. And if it were Knickers Produce then I would have torn them down a lot more quickly and intensely than I did in this review.

We had become accustomed to dropping into the Asian grocery for an an abundance of hard-to-find and inexpensive fruits and vegetables; to the Indian store for exotic spices and savory treats (Samosa); and to the Persian shop for pitas and baklava. We've been looking for similar shops in the Fredericksburg area -- and found this store referenced on Yelp. The store was easy to reach off Plank Road, though tucked away in small center (with many closed storefronts) in a neighborhood. The "neighborhood" felt safe, and there was plentiful parking. The shop was cheery and bright, with one aisle of fresh fruits and vegetables, a refrigerated and freezer section, many aisles of packaged goods, and some household items. The assortment tended towards foods from east and southeast Asia. We ended up buying canned coconut milk, and a nice assortment of fresh vegetables that aren't available in our local Food Lion - bean sprouts, bok Choy, bitter gourd, and Japanese eggplant. We were also tempted by the frozen wrappers to make Dim Sum or Filipino spring rolls. Next time! We looked for some Indian spices (coriander, timur), but they were not available. Prices were comparable to our regular grocery store. The older man who checked us out was quick-to-smile, but we didn't talk. We would return to this store when next in Fredericksburg.

I love to cook "exotic" dishes, and I could find all of ingredients here. The aisles are labeled so things are easy to find. There's plenty of staff to help you as well. Back home in Houston, I know the only place to find good variety is at Asian supermarkets. So, I searched on Yelp. Here we are. I couldn't believe New Grand Mart has almost all mushroom varieties in the Asian markets: fresh Shiitake Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms, King Oyster Mushrooms (hardiest kind), White Beech Mushrooms, Brown Beech Mushrooms, Snow White Mushrooms aka Seafood Mushroom, Enoki (good for grilling), Wood Ear Mushrooms aka black fungus 黑木耳 (incredible meat texture), Baby Bella Mushrooms and Button Mushrooms. The only thing I didn't see was portobello Mushrooms. I immediately noticed the clientele was mixed ethnicity. Wow, the store was playing Spanish music and there were aisles of Hispanic products. So, I concluded that New Grand Mart is a truly an international supermarket. Definitely a good place to share my food culture knowledge by bringing people from other areas to come explore.
