Quaint bakery with a hot food bar, deli, dessert rack and small market. It was clean and organized. First time there, so of course I needed help and they were very willing to help. I think you can get a combo meal with two sides on most of their entree items. I got a spinach and feta and chicken fatayers, which is like a giant bread pocket with filling inside. I enjoyed it, very flavorful. I think if I wanted it again, I need to be in the mood and have the craving for it. Their hummus was tasty, but not as thick as I like my hummus to be. It's good, just the texture got me. Their tabbouleh was amazing. Also bought a pistachio baklava which was incredible. I've been coming here since I was a teenager, and after more than 15 years it's still one of my favorite spots in the city. The food has always been fresh, flavorful, and consistent. You can tell they care about the quality. The pita is soft and warm, the spinach pies are perfectly flaky, and the dips like hummus and baba ghanoush are always on point. I usually end up walking out with way more than I planned because everything just looks and smells so good. We have been regulars at this bakery for many years, and our top favorite dishes are - Musakhan , chicken or lamb shawarma, Falafel sandwich , beef n cheese fatayer. Their baklavas (especially the pistachio ones) are my favorite indulgence. I also love shopping in their grocery store, and they offer authentic Middle Eastern items/brands of chocolates, pastries, spices, etc. that you would only find in that region. I was very excited to come into this Mediterranean bakery/deli after having a chicken meat pie at an event. I came in around 6pm, most of the hot dishes had already been bought up but I was able to get a spinach hand pie and three pieces of pistachio baklava. The spinach pie was even better than the chicken I had previously had, moist and flavorful with a little kick on the back and. The baklava was the star of the show and keeps me coming back to this market. In another visit there was no hot food items but I was able to pick up some pickles, hot peppers from Palestine, markuk bread and of course more baklava. The staff are always incredibly friendly. Wow! Just wow! Good wows! Randomly discovered the building when I had to turn around. I googled it and saw the great reviews and figured I'd get some goodies to take home. I got walnut baklava for the family, and a spinach and feta fatayer for me and my spouse. Both were amazing. I had to go back because everything smelled so good. Even my little one kept saying "mmmm" at the aromas. We shared their last chicken musakhan roll - holy expletive! I've honestly never tasted something like it; the spices and flavors, I could have eaten at least 5 more. We also got a few falafel to go with a side of their tahini, both delicious. Then I woke up craving the musakhan roll the next day. We went back and they were out of them, so we tried the musakhan pizza. Same deliciousness, just a little tricky to cut and share. We also enjoyed this chicken and rice dish (I have no idea what it's called), and it was great, too. Only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the attitude of one of the employees working the register. We interacted with her on two occasions and it was uncomfortable. Not sure if a bad mood or what, but quite the contrast to the other amazing and helpful women who helped us, one of whom even said she'd make me musakhan rolls herself if I call ahead. I had stopped in here once about a 100 years ago so when DH and I decided to have a lunch date we thought we should check out Mediterranean Bakery and Deli. We are so glad we did! First we had to cruise the grocery section. It was hard not to stuff everything in my grocery basket. Moving on to the lunch counter... there is a hot deli, sandwiches, salads and desserts from which to choose. DH decided to try the homemade fatayers (we chose the beef and feta ones), along with a number of their fresh sides -tabouli, couscous, tzatziki and pita. I got some kibbeh to take home too. Everything was absolutely delicious. DH proclaimed that to be the finest tabouli he has ever eaten. It makes me want to have a party so I can have them cater! I cannot wait to go back and try some of their other offerings from the hot deli! read more

I've shopped here several times, but this is the first time I got prepared foods. What took me so long! Excellent, tahini forward hummus, five flavors of fatayer (delicious meat or spinach filled pastries), olives, three types of feta, plus side dishes. Unable to choose, I got one of each of the sweet pastries, all of which are delicious. The shop is spotlessly clean. Normally I get hard to find spices here, because the prices are fair. Plus they always have fresh pita to go with that lovely hummus. Service is so friendly and helpful, so if you don't know what something is, or how it's used, there are always enough people to help. A nice selection of middle eastern goods. They used to have the best hummus--I would stop by there before going to Roanoke or NC and get some hummus to take to family. The past 2 years have changed, though. Not sure if maybe the have changed management. I know the original owner died, but I thought his son had taken over. They have begun watering down their hummus, thinning it so there's more. The last time I bought a container and threw out half. All these years laster and still where it's at for good, quick, and affordable Mediterranean food. I am so completely smitten with the mujadara (lentils, and rice with caramelized onions). I could eat it all day! I could stuff my face with a big pot of it. It is simple and ridiculous flavorful. The caramelized onions are so dreamy! I also love the convenience of simply popping in and grabbing two cabbage rolls rather than eating junky fast food elsewhere. It's always flavorful and good, and the price is right for some nutritious, balanced food. My son and I both loved them when we had to go in that area regularly for appointments. When I could eat it, the roasted veggie flatbread was so flavorful and delicious, and it goes fast because it's so good. I love the variety of cheeses, dips, and, of course, very yummy chocolates from less common brands and harder-to-find types from more common brands like Milka (yum yum!). Just wow... I was hankering for a falafel and the Balkan spot I usually go to was closed. So Yelp helped me find this little Mediterranean Bakery! I've passed it for years on my way to work. From the outside, it doesn't look like much... it's unassuming, the building is nondescript and so I just drive by. Well, let me just tell you that you can't judge a place by the facade... I walked in to a colorful, bustling, aromatic haven of cultural delight! Yes, there's an amazing bakery case with "bawklawa", bird's nest, cashew burma, Greek cookies, mamoul dates with walnut or pistachio and so much more! There's an impressive prepared foods case, a cheese and dairy case, a deli, a meat case - all full of gorgeous kebabs, tzatziki, tabouli, eggplant, Mediterranean pizza, grapes leaves, lamb shawarma, feta and others cheeses, baba ghanouj and of course hummus! And so many other incredible foods, it'll blow you away and you won't "falafel" (feel awful) afterwards ... insert pun groan here! It's a healthy alternative to fast food! I had the falafel and it was amazing! The cucumber and yogurt sauce was outrageously flavorful and the price was spot on! Get one!! I sat in the little restaurant in the back, devouring my sandwich, reading a book, and enjoyed listening to the languages of this fascinating culture (and I'm not just talking yogurt!) I was excited to shop in the mini market behind the seating area and purchase some teas and tea biscuits, sesame candies, spices and some Mediterranean coffee for the hubster! I have not tasted Kibe prepared so close to my mom's that it brought tears to my eyes. Everything was freshly made and delectable. The beauty of eating many of their dishes, is that they are not bad for you. Another hidden gem found through Yelp! I am by no means an expert on Mediterranean food and was almost overwhelmed with options walking in the door. I love the family/local vibe and service was fast and friendly. The chicken shawarma was delicious and well balanced with the right proportions of sauce, veggies and chicken. The sides were even more stellar with some of the best pita chips I've ever had (light, crispy, and flavorful) and flaky, gooey, decadent baklava. We don't travel this way often, in fact almost never, but made a special trip for several reasons. This one wasn't one of them, but when we passed it, I remembered the great reviews here and told my wife we need to go back! I'm very happy we did! I'm not sure what the location was originally, but it was some sort of fast food establishment. When you enter, there is a deli case/hot items and preparation area occupying half the space, seating maybe 25 percent and the other 25 percent shelving. The folks behind the counter were extremely friendly. The gentlemen and I spoke about why you don't see many places in this area with the gyro meat on the spit. The young lady was impressed with how well I spoke Spanish with my wife and we had a conversation on languages. She said she spoke Russian, Turkish and one or two other languages (now that's impressive). As nice as all the talk was, we came here to taste the food. On this occasion, we ordered a falafel, gyro and a piece of pistachio baklava as this was our second stop to sample food. My wife loved the falafel and stated that the baklava was better than that she had from Lebanon! The only misstep was on the gyro. The meat was pretty dry and thus had lost some of its flavor. And for this, they lost the final star. For sure we'll venture out this way again and this will surely be a stop on this trip. read more

Quick lunch and lost Lustre. I've eaten at the Deli infrequently for years. Love the not-from-here vibe and I support such local businesses whenever possible. Today I had their usually excellent falafel sandwich and pistachio baklava. The falafel was good but the pita was very stale. The baklava was inedible -- made with margarine (it had that funky off color and fake nasty taste). Baklava requires butter, and only butter. I hope this lovely place ups their game. It can be tricky to figure out prices on the things in the grocery area, but there are some absolute gems here that you don't want to miss. The hot food and bakery section of the store had a wide variety of options-- I had the same confusion with trying to figure out prices, but didn't let it stop me from trying a couple different things. Once upon a time, a dear colleague of mine brought me some baklava as a midday work snack. I have had many a baklava in the past but they're usually too sweet/not enough nuts/soggy = in other words, sub-par. But THIS one... I fell in love immediately. Perfect amount sweetness and very flaky - I could taste every layer! I demanded to know where she found this extraordinary baklava and now... here I am! Mediterranean Bakery & Deli is a family-run establishment that not only sells authentic Middle Eastern food items, but it also serves as a small grocery store that sells wonderful grains, spices, nuts, dried fruits, condiments, etc. I ended up buying some Halloumi cheese which I ended up sautéing at home to top a salad. It's a very salty and "squeaky" cheese - really yummy! You can dine-in or do take-out and there are enough options for carnivores and vegetarians. I had meat on the brain and my eyes went straight for the shawarma. Wow, that lamb shawarma = so delicious! Fabulous ratio of meat to veggies to sauces and everything is neatly wrapped in a pita. The 6-inch is perfect if you have a smaller appetite but go for the 12-inch if you're feeling ambitious. I also tried their 2 baklavas - pistachio and walnut. They both look super similar but there's a very distinct pistachio taste whereas the walnut one just tastes... well "nutty" if you will. I also tried a Mini Rose tasted more like sugar cookie, no floral rose flavor which was rather disappointing. But that's okay, I'm all about their baklava! Wow! I love this place. They have a fabulous selection of Mediterranean food, baked goods, and groceries. Everything is fresh and fairly priced. The service is excellent. It's clean and bright. My only regret is that I didn't discover this place sooner! I will definitely be returning. I ordered the lamb shwarma. Lamb can be bad if it is not cooked right. My favorite item to get here is their Mujadara, which is a dish of lentils, carmelized onions, and rice. I love the flavors of the spices used in this dish. We initially came in here looking for Middle Eastern groceries. Which, they have, if that's what you're looking for - I wasn't 100% sure before we went since essentially all of the comments on yelp & elsewhere rave about the prepared foods alone. They have a good selection of spices and ingredients that can be hard to find outside stores like this! They also have cheeses and (halal) meats behind the counter to order. And as so many others have commented, the prepared food is delicious! We've had both the spinach & beef fatayers, which were amazing, as were their musakhan. Prices are great too - combo plates with an entree + 2 sides + bread + a fountain drink is between $6-$8. There are also a variety of baked goods (think baklava, namoura, etc) that will only set you back like 75 cents to $1.50 a piece. I've been on the hunt for perfect shawarma (I have family who just moved here from Israel who miss the taste of home), so this was obviously on my list to try. Since it was my first visit, there was a lot to take in. I only knew that I wanted shawarma and the staff helped me out with the rest. Unfortunately I made it there around 6pm on a Saturday, so they were out of a few things. We heard about this place from our friends- heard about their great baked goodies. Funny because when we came here, we had a spontaneous dinner & totally forgot about the bakery part of the place! The place had a grocery store on one side, and a mini cafe on the other. I saw the menu (on chalkboards above the deli area) and got hungry because we had a light lunch! My boyfriend had the Fatayer (meat pie) meal, and I got the chicken kebab meal, which came with one kebab, rice, tzatziki, and some herb type salad (which i didn't care for, but I don't like salad /veggies in general.) The chicken was excellent but my favorite was the tzatziki! So tasty! The price of both our meals combined was only $14.00, and even included one canned soda!! Good food for a good price. YUM and thank goodness I found this place. I was recommended by a local guy who grew up in Lakeside, and it definitely didn't disappoint. There's a huge counter with cold cuts and all sorts of packaged deli treats, an assortment of hot items like falafels under a lamp, and then baked items like baklava... Plus a whole section devoted to grocery items like pita and cookies and candies. Here's a run down of what I got, and hence why I love this place: 1. Hummus. It's amazing. I am eating it while I type. It tastes fresh and not overly lemony, like the store-bought ones that need preservatives. The tahini is perfectly flavoring it, and it's creamy but with just a little but of lumps to let you know it's homemade. 2. Baba ganoush. Also amazing. Creamy, rich, packed with roasted eggplant flavor. Milder than the hummus. 3. Tabuoleh- refreshing and light. The onions weren't overpowering like they are in so many of these types of salads. 4. Baklava- small portions, but really how much of a rich treat do you need? Each piece is 85 cents, and filled with walnuts and sugary syrup. Plus, there were no dry portions- it was thoroughly moist and delicious. 5. Pita- I wanted to get a few pieces from the deli, but the man behind the counter convinced me that I should just get a package... and he was right. For under $2 I got 5 pitas... and they were really good... light and thin and great for scooping up the abovementioned items (minus the baklava). And I would have gotten some grape leaves, but they were all out! Now I know I know, nothing I chose was very exciting or out of the norm for a Mediterranean Deli... but I like to go with the standard classics and if those are good, I know it's a good place. Not only do they have outrageously low prices on things like tamarind paste, cous cous, sun dried tomatoes and spices (a few things I purchased today) but their prepared foods are wonderfully flavorful and cooked to perfection. Since I was a little kid, my mother took me to the Mediterranean Bakery Deli to pick up groceries and spices. Now, that I'm an adult, I realize how lucky I am to have been going to this place since it used to reside on Horsepen Rd. Jameel and his family make this place wonderful! The prepared foods taste homemade. I introduced my husband who grew up on the eastern Mediterranean coast to the bakery, and he has been hooked ever since. Just a few things that make this place not just good, but GREAT: 1) The tabouli . . . no place else in the world makes tabouli as flavorful and fresh, and I've been to a lot of places in the world. The bulghar wheat is always dry and crunchy everywhere else, except for here. I just don't know how they do it! 2) The fatayers . . . are packed full. So few places take the time to pack it so full of lovely meats, cheeses, and/or veggies. 3) The Palestinian mousakhan is an eggplant lover's paradise. The eggplant is delicately fried in olive oil and then stewed in tomato sauce and spices. Get that with some mujadara (rice with lentils and onions) - you won't be disappointed. 4) The made-in-house pita chips are ridiculously good! Hints of olive oil, lemon, garlic, and za'atar make these chips completely unique and stand out from the crowd. 5) The staff is mostly family, so you always get great service. read more

It's rare to spend less than $10 for lunch anymore, particularly for a meal that's freshly prepared and delicious. The fatayer was crisp, hot and filled with a perfect balance of spinach and feta. The tabouli was tasted fresh and full of parsley and lemon juice, and the hummus was creamy. Because I couldn't help it, I also got a piece of pistachio baklava, which was flaky, sweet and impossible to stop eating. The entire wall behind the register is filled with special Greek cookies.
