You can almost see him as some reclusive clock-maker in a Victorian novel that pops up in a moment of heightened stress for the main character, there to show you what a less stressful, more humble life can really mean. I mean, the guy even offers all customers free sodas. He also has a lovely staff, providing a nice cross-section of America's disappearing middle class: the husky-voiced rough-around-the-edges manager who in another generation you'd find passed out a horse-track, the high school girl on her laptop who couldn't care less about sports, some puppy-faced twentysomething they give the job of carrying boxes to. Even the products themselves are authentic; it's not just a sterile wall of sealed product, but corners of his store have a mess of poorly sorted memorabilia guaranteed to make you smile. It's like someone filled up a U-Haul with a basement from 1997, down to the last Jay Buhner bobble-head. I'm taking a point off because he inflates the cost of his singles quite a bit. Stuff you can get on eBay for $2 (incl shipping) he'll mark as $8-10 -- not sure what that pricing strategy is when everyone has eBay sold lists in their pocket. But he also has ample quarter boxes that make up for the inflation in other parts of the store.

We had stopped by Kent for a meal and decided to check out The Game Shelf as they weren't too far. The parking is huge and shared with a lot of businesses and it was Friday evening, so it took a little bit of time to find parking. Once we parked, we entered into the store and were greeted politely by the cashier. There was a Magic the Gathering event going on and it looks like their events calendar always has something going on each day which is great. They even did Final Fantasy TCG which we have yet to see anywhere else and we have been to card shops in several parts of Washington. They had quite a massive selection of wares from desk mats, card holders, sleeves, deck boxes, board games, dice, and much more. We bought a few things and as we were checking out, the cashier mentions to us about their reward system which is a character sheet that you can fill out and there are six slots that they will add up from each amount you spent. Depending on how much you spend will determine your discount which I think is really neat and unique from other card shops. It rewards you no matter how much you spend rather than a point system that could take more than a few purchases to accumulate. I also asked if they were dog friendly and they are, they just ask that your dog is well-behaved, don't make a fuss or bother other patrons, and to clean up after them.

Every Friday at 7pm is D&D night with a group who are willing to teach you:) they have events and other games there as well that people come to play. They have a fridge with drinks as well for purchase and games you can play off the shelf.

As I browsed inside someone was willing to answer a bunch of my beginner questions on grading, how I might go about the process and such and also gave me room to browse around when I thanked them for the info and said I wanted to just look around. The shop is pretty popular, there were about at least 7 people in there with me at all times. I bought a graded 1st gen pokemon card and did so without really price checking because I needed a slab of some sort for my own purposes. When I went home later and checked the prices on it, it was market price which was a pleasant feeling to know I didn't get ripped. Definitely would come back here to make purchases regarding tcg and to do any PSA submissions.

Today he recommended this Wonder Woman comic to me with beautiful art and I've been loving it so far. The first time I visited Mighty Moose, I was looking for Shadow Service published by Vault Comics. I was travelling shortly, but Ilan found all the issues for me and held them until two months later when I returned. I really appreciated him going above and beyond to get me the comics I wanted. When I went in today, Ilan was working on a video of some super vintage comics for social media and it was really cool to see them up close. Yes their cards can sometimes be overpriced (I collect Pokemon cards), but sometimes there are great deals! Ilan sold me his entire stock of leftover Halloween Pokemon cards early last year for super cheap and I gave them out to my nieces and nephews who adored them!

They host both the card game and the switch/video game challenges. I did have a card to trade and the breakdown of the process was the most thorough I've seen yet and I wanted store credit as you get 80% vs 70% if you got cash only. Anywho, the wait to be called did take longer than I'd like but given it was busy and my decision on what to use for store credit took awhile, I wouldn't deduct anything. Avery (sp?) was the main person who helped me and she was very patient. I also bought some playable cards (they have a stash of organized cards in bins near their staff-only area which other employees helped me out with. All-in-all, very spacious and well organized! They have one exclusively for double rares/ex cards, ultra rares/full arts, ace specs, etc. They even have a box for people to drop off ETB boxes in for people to claim for free if they want to take home. I also noticed some instant ramen station which they utilized for food in the store. They have some nice wall art too that was handprints as well. Would revisit if I'm ever back in Seattle, WA!

The staff was also friendlier and helpful. If you're looking for Pokémon cards, this is definitely not the best place to look for them. They had a bunch of single cards displayed and it looks pretty randomized. Not a good variety and honestly looks disorganized. They at least have a decent amount of sealed products, but everything was above market price. The staff wasn't friendly, nor were they interactive. The place wasn't that organized. There's a decent amount of table with you want to play card games with your friends.

He accused me of taking pictures of the store to make a scam site online (I was just using my phone to zoom in on the small prices on the wall), and then while I was buying something from another staff member for the posted price, he interjected himself and repriced the item raising it nearly $100 while I was buying it (about 20% over tcgplayer price). The other staff member looked really uncomfortable, I asked him why he did that and he just walked away. I said forget it, went to walk out and another staff member apologized for his behavior, said he was having a bad day. There are a lot of places to buy cardboard, most of if not all of what they sold is cheaper online. I like going to a store and buying it off a shelf instead of on a website, but not if they're going to treat people poorly. There are a handful of other shops as well between tacoma and federal way. Again, the rest of the staff was great and I hesitated to even bother leaving feedback, but I haven't been back there since and figured I'd share so people know who they may run into when they shop there.

Selling to shops as a female is always a hit or miss of whether they will underestimate and take advantage of you. They seemed to think they could try to offer me $70 for hundreds of dollars of cards, including graded, numbered and autos. Dude took out 60 of my cards and didn't comp any of them, including graded and numbered and auto ones, then proceeded to tell me they were all each worth about $1-3 each spending about 5 minutes max going through them and not once comping cards to average recent last sold prices. Knowing that was extremely low and that they didn't comp like all other stores, I let him know I'd be price checking before accepting any offers, which I always do. Once I spent 30 minutes of my time checking the cards for recent last sold prices, and found half of them were worth $15-$80 EACH, and removed them from the original pile, I was told they were closing in 10 minutes and could no longer offer me anything for any of them. Wasted about an hour of my time total in that store for them to just attempt to completely scam me and then give me attitude when they realized they weren't going to be putting one over on me. One of the cards he quoted was a few dollars only I had just been offered $40 at a previous card shop and still declined because I wanted more than 50%. This place is scum. Not to mention, I am pregnant with twins and did not need to be wasting my time or having a grown adult stress me out and waste my time. Terrible business. Maybe the owner shouldn't own a shop if they don't want to accurately price match, so they can scam pregnant woman and then be rude to them when they don't allow it. I am the only one who price matched and averaged recent sales of my cards to find you were trying to rip me off for hundreds of dollars. They didn't price match ANY and went through a stack of almost 70 cards you pulled in 5 minutes then added up some BS $70 number in your head. Maybe this shop shouldn't be open if they don't know how to do business or average last sold because they just want to scam people because using those methods and offering 50-70 percent is the standard. They also replied to my google review acting like they did price match last sold and I was just looking on eBay when that is completely false. He pulled 60 plus cards and added up a number in his head and did not price comp them. I also went by average recent sold not current eBay bids. This store is disingenuous to the bone. Their reply also falsely accused me of coming in after their cut off time for selling yet still accommodated me, when in fact I got there 15 minutes prior and spent 10 of those waiting to the buyer to come back from break and I wasn't even told of them having a cut off time until the very end. Goodluck with running your business like that. Avoid this place. There are other store between Tacoma and my favorite RENTON that are genuine, runs by best practices of comping, and offers 60-80 percent. Westside Sportscards is a fraud.
